Ch. 1Sunflower, but Without the Filter
Plot points and events
- Jin Yang arrives at Nuoding City Junior Soul Master Academy as a new work-study student. His sunflower Martial Soul gives him only level-two-and-a-half Innate Soul Power, so he declines to challenge Dorm Seven’s boss and agrees to follow the rules.
- He discovers his smiling Plants vs. Zombies-style Sunflower produces edible sunlight. It keeps him full, replenishes Soul Power, and gradually improves his strength and physique. Feeding the plant sunlight also produces sweet, beneficial nectar.
- Jin Yang offers sunlight to Wang Sheng and another student as thanks for helping him settle in. They are impressed by its food-like benefits.
- Xiao Wu and Tang San arrive. Xiao Wu is eager to test Jin Yang, but Tang San explains the dormitory custom. When he learns Jin Yang’s low Soul Power, Tang San becomes dismissive, and the other students gravitate toward him and Xiao Wu, leaving Jin Yang isolated.
- Jin Yang continues cultivating alone. After eating sunlight and licking the Sunflower’s nectar from his hands, his unusual swaying and smiling unnerves the dormitory. Even Xiao Wu keeps her distance, while Tang San scoffs at his method.
Character developments and interactions
- Jin Yang is an adult-minded transmigrant who has accepted that he may lead an ordinary life. Though hurt by the students’ exclusion, he stays composed and focuses on developing his unusual Martial Soul.
- Wang Sheng is welcoming and nurturing: he helps Jin Yang settle in, invites him to eat, and encourages him to cultivate. He is the only student who remains near Jin Yang after the group shifts toward Tang San and Xiao Wu.
- Tang San appears gloomy and guarded. He pulls Xiao Wu away from Jin Yang and judges Jin Yang’s low Soul Power and cultivation practice against his own Mysterious Heaven Skill.
- Xiao Wu is energetic and curious, initially approaching Jin Yang openly, but she recoils from his nectar-eating ritual.
- The exchange between Jin Yang and the dormitory students begins warmly, but Tang San’s reaction quickly creates a social divide.
Significant themes
- Appearance versus potential: Jin Yang’s weak starting Soul Power and odd-looking Martial Soul conceal useful abilities that may support long-term growth.
- Belonging and exclusion: A small difference in perceived talent is enough to shift the dormitory’s attention and leave Jin Yang isolated.
- Practical adaptation: Rather than despairing over limited talent, Jin Yang experiments with his Martial Soul and builds a routine around its benefits.
- Comedy through contrast: Jin Yang’s adult perspective and bizarre, unfiltered plant abilities clash with the children’s reactions and the familiar world of Douluo Continent.
