Everyone gathered around the large table in the living room. Some had already taken their seats, and people chatted in twos and threes. Amid the noise, Eucali suddenly remembered something and turned toward her room. Hesta noticed her departing figure, set Eleven down, and followed.

Eucali noticed the footsteps behind her and turned around.

"Where are you going?" Hesta asked. "Dinner's almost ready."

"I remembered my medicine box is still in my room," Eucali said. "I'm afraid I'll forget after dinner, so I'm going to get it first..."

"Okay, I'll go with you."

"You don't need to." Eucali looked at Hesta. "It's such a short distance. I can manage on my own."

Hesta nodded.

Eucali walked a few steps, then looked back and saw Hesta was still standing where she was, without leaving.

She sighed. "Fine, then come with me."

Eucali's room was on the south side of the first floor, and it was very spacious. A large wooden bed stood against the wall, with two matching wooden nightstands on either side. The left cabinet door and the front of the right drawer were both carved with intricate patterns, making them look quite old. A large desk stood by the window, completely bare, with its matching wooden chair tucked tightly against it. At the other end of the room stood a large dark-brown wardrobe with its doors shut. Beside it was an open suitcase—Eucali had not unpacked any of her luggage, only taken out a few daily necessities to use.

There was too little stuff and too much room. Everything felt empty, even more lifeless because of it.
