Lairin took back the menu Eucali handed her. "Are you here for sightseeing or work?"
"Work," Simoya answered. "But we usually stay in the city. We don't normally come this far out like we did today. Even if you gave us salad, boss, that wouldn't make us repeat customers."
"Then let's just be friends. I rarely get female customers here." Lairin looked at the children. "Want some ice cream?"
Kiki could have understood those words, but Lairin had an accent and spoke quickly. She could only barely guess what the question meant, and she did not dare answer for fear she had misunderstood.
"They're still learning how to speak District 3 Language," Hesta said. "Do you have ice cream? Give me a serving too."
"Haha, sure! But there's no choice of flavors—only pistachio!"
More customers pushed open the door and came in from outside. Lairin clapped her hands and hurried over to greet them.
Hesta's gaze followed Lairin over. The new customers were still several men in military uniforms. Lairin immediately called them by name, even asking whether the letters they had written home had been sent.
Yet before they could sit down, a bugle sounded in the distance, calling for assembly. Nearly every diner in the restaurant immediately got up and ran outside upon hearing it. A few even specifically ran over to say goodbye to Lairin.
The entire hall became empty in an instant.
Hesta turned back. "...Did they all pay?"
"It's fine." Lairin leaned against a chair. "They'll make it up next time they come. This isn't the first time."
"No one skips out on the bill?"
"How could they, unless they never come back again?" Lairin tapped her head. "I remember everyone who came in today."
