"Bei Bei wins!"
The referee's words had barely fallen when Xu Sanshi sprang up, shouting that Bei Bei had cheated. Beside Wang Dong, however, Huo Yuhao collapsed.
Between Spiritual Detection Sharing and Soul Shock, Huo Yuhao's Soul Power, already badly depleted today, had hit rock bottom again.
"Xu Sanshi really had it rough!"
Lu Yi had watched the whole match, so he knew exactly what had happened.
"He fought two against one the whole time, took a beating, and lost a Mystic Water Pill on top of it. He'd lost his wife and his soldiers!"
Lu Yi couldn't help recalling that Huo Yuhao had wanted to help Wang Dong during her match against him, too.
He had been testing his own strength at the time, so he'd refused any help from the sidelines.
He didn't approve of cheating, but he had no reason to stop it, much less pity Xu Sanshi, that lovestruck turtle.
After all, Huo Yuhao had gone all out to help Bei Bei. Xu Sanshi's earlier bullying had clearly made him hold a grudge.
Huo Yuhao was awfully good at holding grudges right now. Offend him and expect to get away?
Impossible!
Tang Ya was puzzled too. How had using Spiritual Detection managed to knock Huo Yuhao unconscious? She had no idea that Huo Yuhao's Soul Shock had caused Xu Sanshi's brief lapse.
The match had ended so abruptly that the spectators were left wanting more. A few bolder freshmen had even started shouting for refunds.
Their voices were soon drowned out by the departing crowd.
"Come on! Let's get Yuhao back to his dorm!"
Tang Ya had already hoisted Huo Yuhao up, but Wang Dong stepped forward ahead of Lu Yi to support him.
Lu Yi was happy to let her. He just smiled. "Oh? Worried about your roommate?"
Wang Dong rolled her eyes at him and fired back, "Look at your legs shaking. You'd probably have to be carried back halfway there."
"Well, well!" Lu Yi stared at her in surprise. "Your tongue's gotten sharper?"
"Of course. Spend time with ink and you'll turn black!" A smug look flashed across Wang Dong's face.
Lu Yi didn't deny it. "True. It's all Huo Yuhao's fault!"
At that, even Tang Ya turned to give Lu Yi an eye roll. Huo Yuhao himself, though, offered no rebuttal.
The four reached the dormitory building just as Bei Bei caught up with them.
Seeing them together, Bei Bei first checked on Huo Yuhao. Then, without a word, he took out a porcelain bottle and fed Huo Yuhao the pill inside.
Wang Dong's eyes widened the moment she saw it, as though she couldn't believe it.
"That couldn't be a Mystic Water Pill, could it?"
Bei Bei's next words immediately confirmed her guess.
He turned to Lu Yi, pressed the porcelain bottle into his hand, and said, "Little Brother Lu, this is a Mystic Water Pill. It'll help your cultivation. I made sure to get two, and this one's for you."
"This... I couldn't possibly accept it."
Lu Yi hadn't expected that the Mystic Water Pill he'd been plotting to get that afternoon would be delivered into his hands by Bei Bei that very evening. He couldn't help feeling touched.
"Take it! Sister Lexuan told me to look after you. As your big brother, I can't favor one of you over the other, can I?"
Bei Bei truly did act like a big brother, but his expression grew forlorn when he mentioned Zhang Lexuan.
Lu Yi realized he'd been at the academy for several days without hearing any news of her. Concerned, he asked, "How is Sister Lexuan doing now?"
Bei Bei shook his head. He glanced unconsciously toward the old man on a recliner in the distance before answering, "I don't know the details. A senior from the Inner Court only said that her condition had stabilized. He didn't tell me much else."
Lu Yi caught that fleeting glance and understood.
If even Bei Bei couldn't get the truth, Zhang Lexuan's condition probably wasn't good.
After all, Bei Bei's great-great-grandfather Mu En was right there. He was bound to know about something this serious, and he must have had his reasons for choosing not to tell Bei Bei.
"I'm sure Sister Lexuan will be completely better soon!" Lu Yi said, trying to comfort him.
"You're right!"
Bei Bei quickly collected himself and returned to the Mystic Water Pill. "It expels impurities from the body. Once you take it, I'd suggest staying out of the dorm if you can. Otherwise, your roommate might have something to say about it."
After giving Lu Yi another reminder to help Huo Yuhao back to his room, Bei Bei headed for the stairs with Tang Ya.
Wang Dong: ?
Am I invisible? Do I even count as a person?
"Oh, right!" Tang Ya suddenly remembered something important. She turned to Wang Dong. "Little cutie, when little Yuhao wakes up, don't forget to remind him to sell grilled fish tomorrow."
"Oh~"
Wang Dong answered without thinking, then watched Tang Ya and Bei Bei disappear into the stairwell, chatting and laughing together.
"All right, let's not leave him hanging around outside. Help me carry Huo Yuhao in!"
Lu Yi found that Wang Dong had been right: his legs were still weak, and he really couldn't bear Huo Yuhao's weight on his own.
Once they had laid Huo Yuhao on the bare wooden bed, Wang Dong spoke up.
"I really don't know what your relationship is. How could Bei Bei give you two such precious Mystic Water Pills as though they were nothing?"
Lu Yi smiled and deliberately kept his voice even. "It's nothing. We just went through life and death together. Hardly worth mentioning."
"Oh, so that's—" Wang Dong seemed to understand, then realized what he'd said and suddenly raised her voice. "What? Tell me everything!"
Lu Yi made no effort to hide it. He told her how he'd met Bei Bei and Huo Yuhao, how they'd happened upon Zhang Lexuan's team, and how they'd fought a fierce battle against a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast. Wang Dong listened in stunned silence.
"So that teacher leading the team was far too unreliable, wasn't he?" Wang Dong said bluntly, seizing on what seemed to be the important point.
Lu Yi offered no further judgment. He merely nodded. "Don't tell anyone I said that."
You'll run into him yourself someday. You can judge him then.
"All right, I'm off!"
Lu Yi called out a farewell and left.
Wang Dong also realized the dorm would be uninhabitable tonight. She rolled up her bedding, left the room, and vanished into the night.
Lu Yi had no intention of returning to his dorm. He planned to take the Mystic Water Pill now, so he strolled to the lakeside where he had fought Wu Feng at noon.
At night, Sea God Lake had shed all the day's heat. A gentle breeze swept across the water, bringing a welcome coolness.
Lu Yi sat cross-legged on the grass. Looking at the moon reflected in the lake and the faint outline of the Golden Tree in the distance, he felt more relaxed than ever.
He pulled the stopper from the porcelain bottle and tipped out the Mystic Water Pill.
A fresh fragrance immediately reached his nose. Just smelling it left him clearheaded and refreshed.
The Mystic Water Pill might have been the opposite of stinky tofu. The latter smelled foul but tasted delicious; the pill smelled wonderful before you ate it, then stank afterward. Except the thing that stank was you.
Lu Yi thought no more of it and swallowed the Mystic Water Pill in one gulp. A cool, sweet taste instantly filled his mouth.
The pill was small enough to swallow without chewing and slid down his throat into his stomach.
The Mystic Water Pill's effects took hold on their own, without any need to channel Soul Power. With nothing else to do, Lu Yi closed his eyes.
He didn't know how Electrolux had been doing these past two days. He decided to visit the old man in the Magic Library.
