Background / History
Early standing at Shrek
Mu En took Zhang Lexuan in and trained her, making her his disciple and Yan Shaozhe’s junior martial sister. She also cared for Bei Bei from childhood, becoming an older-sister figure to him 4 54.
Before meeting Lu Yi, she had led the Shrek Seven Devils to a tournament championship. Shrek invested heavily in her development as a future Sea God Pavilion Master, and she was initially its most promising succession candidate before Bei Bei, Huo Yuhao, and Lu Yi were added to consideration 11 71 251.
Star Dou Great Forest disaster
At level eighty, Zhang Lexuan led an Inner Court Soul Hunting expedition into the Star Dou Great Forest. After the students seeking Fifth Soul Rings departed, the remaining party encountered Bei Bei, Tang Ya, Huo Yuhao, and Lu Yi. She reprimanded Bei Bei and Tang Ya for taking such risks to hunt hundred-year beasts, then recognized Lu Yi’s unusual potential and supplied a recommendation letter for his admission to Shrek 4.
An Eclipse Moon Shadow Leopard trapped the group in a Black Barrier that even her heightened perception could not penetrate. The hundred-thousand-year beast interfered with her Moon abilities, turning part of her Moonfall attack against a teammate. She changed tactics and ultimately began burning her Martial Soul Origin, intending to hold it back while Han Ruoruo, Wu Ming, and Zhu Song escaped; all three refused to abandon her 5 6.
Lu Yi’s enchanted pouch temporarily imprisoned the leopard. Zhang Lexuan warned him that its extraordinary capacity made it a dangerous secret and promised the survivors’ silence. When the pouch began failing, she carried it away from the group herself. Xuan Zi arrived after it burst and subdued the beast, allowing her to deliver the killing blow 7 8.
Before absorbing its ring, she asked Xuan Zi to rescue the missing students and ordered the survivors to conceal Lu Yi’s exceptional contribution. She also lent Lu Yi a storage bracelet. Four disciples died in the disaster, and two survivors were left disabled 8 53.
Injury and recovery
Although Zhang Lexuan successfully absorbed the leopard’s Eighth Soul Ring, the combined strain of combat, burning her essence, and resisting the beast’s resentment caused her to collapse. Xuan Zi brought her to Sea God Pavilion, where Elder Zhuang found that her physical wounds had largely healed but her Martial Soul Origin and soul remained damaged 10 11 12.
She awakened after two and a half months under Li Musheng’s care. Her first concern was the other injured students; he reassured her without disclosing their deaths and lasting disabilities. Twenty days after waking, she could move around but remained too weak to summon her Martial Soul 36 53.
During her convalescence, she stopped Ma Xiaotao from intimidating Lu Yi, Huo Yuhao, and Wang Dong. She also returned the bracelet Lu Yi had pawned for cultivation resources, declining to blame him once she understood how he had spent the money 52 53.
Yan Shaozhe subsequently pressured her to help bring Xuan Zi out of his self-imposed retirement. She recognized that the academy wanted her forgiveness to let him reverse his resignation without losing face. Despite her resentment, she knelt outside his residence and persuaded him to come out 54.
Teaching and return to the Inner Court
Lu Yi’s freshman assessment performance prompted Zhang Lexuan to research his Martial Soul and devise tailored combat training. Because her recovery required at least a year of rest, teaching offered a useful role without resuming cultivation. She requested his first-year class rather than older students 71.
She replaced Zhou Yi as assistant homeroom teacher, leaving ordinary lessons to Wang Yan and concentrating on practical combat. Her demanding drills improved the students’ teamwork and execution. In private training, she exposed Lu Yi’s obvious casting motions and slow attacks, urging him to conceal his intentions and improve spell speed 72.
After their agreed year of teaching ended and her injuries healed, she returned to the Inner Court. She absorbed a hundred-thousand-year Soul Bone and led Inspection Corps missions, deliberately minimizing contact with Xuan Zi. No member suffered a serious injury or died on a mission under her command 255 262.
Academy leadership
Yan Shaozhe later considered bringing Zhang Lexuan back to guide Lu Yi, believing their longstanding friendship would help retain his connection to Shrek. At level eighty-five, she remained strong enough to supervise his combat practice 255.
She helped summon Lu Yi to Sea God Pavilion for Mu En’s final gathering. Following Mu En’s death, she became vice dean of the Martial Soul Department while Cai Mei’er stepped back temporarily. Despite her new position, she preferred that Lu Yi continue calling her “Sister Lexuan” 261 262 296.
Appearance
Zhang Lexuan has a youthful appearance that surprises Wang Dong when she learns that Lexuan is already a Soul Douluo 53.
- Hair: Long, black, and falling to her waist 4 70.
- Complexion: Pale, with cool features; her face becomes bloodless during her prolonged recovery 4 36.
- Clothing: Initially wears the red Inner Court uniform; later appears in simple white or moonlight-white everyday clothes 4 52 70.
Personality
Zhang Lexuan combines a composed manner with firm authority. She scolds juniors for unnecessary risks, places herself between them and danger, and rejects sacrifices that would make younger students pay for their seniors’ survival. Her protection also extends beyond combat: she safeguards Lu Yi’s secrets and offers financial help without reproaching him for pawning her bracelet 4 6 7 8 53.
As a teacher, she is exacting rather than domineering. She identifies mistakes directly, praises genuine improvement, and respects Wang Yan’s responsibilities. Her loyalty to Shrek does not erase her judgment of its leaders: she openly recognizes the face-saving purpose behind Yan Shaozhe’s request and later distances herself from Xuan Zi 54 72 262.
