Background / History
Konoha and the Pursuit of Immortality
Orochimaru studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi, became one of Konoha’s Sannin, and competed for the Hokage position. During the previous Shinobi World War, he commanded forces that included a younger Shinji Uchiha, whom he did not remember individually 76 77.
His initial ambition was to learn every ninjutsu and uncover every truth, inspired in part by the Second Hokage’s forbidden techniques. His parents also influenced this pursuit. The death of his student Nawaki, Tsunade’s younger brother, deepened his fear of mortality; he later admitted that the pursuit of knowledge had partly become an excuse to avoid death 272.
Orochimaru and Danzō initially conducted Wood Release experiments under the Third Hokage’s orders, seeking its ability to restrain Tailed Beasts. Their subjects included wandering ninja and prisoners of war, then children. After Hiruzen ordered the work stopped, they relocated and continued secretly until the village destroyed their base and Orochimaru defected. Aburame Ryoma witnessed countless subjects die from the transplants and confinement 73.
Defeat and Partnership with Shinji
As an Akatsuki member, Orochimaru targeted Itachi’s body as a potential route to immortality. Itachi trapped him in a paralysis genjutsu, severed an arm, and threatened to kill him if he remained in the organization. Rather than abandoning his ambition, Orochimaru became interested in Itachi’s claim that Shinji was stronger and might possess the answer to eternal life 71.
Orochimaru subsequently used Anko as a hostage and lured Shinji into a forest clearing to seize his Sharingan. Shinji overwhelmed his attacks, recognized his evasions, and forced him to summon Manda. After both Orochimaru and the giant snake were defeated, Orochimaru surrendered 76 77 78.
Shinji then proposed cooperation rather than execution, offering himself for Hashirama-cell research. Learning that Tenzo—formerly Root’s Tora—had survived his earlier experiments revived Orochimaru’s interest in the project. The two sealed their agreement with a handshake, raided Root for research records and cultures, and began comparing Shinji’s cells with Hashirama’s 78 79 80.
Otogakure and the Struggle for Independence
Orochimaru established a research base in the war-ravaged Land of Rice Fields and prepared to found Otogakure. Shinji offered assistance but challenged his apparent willingness to destroy an existing settlement for land, arguing that people were valuable resources. Guren, an orphan Orochimaru had taken in, assisted with his experiments 84.
When Shinji brought Hiruko to the laboratory, Orochimaru persuaded his former friend to resume the Chimera Technique and combine their research. Their cooperation remained uneven: Orochimaru helped Hiruko obtain an Explosion Release subject but initially excluded him from Wood Release research, prompting Shinji to intervene 85 108.
Orochimaru acknowledged Shinji’s authority and ordered Kabuto to address him as “Lord Shinji.” Nevertheless, he later challenged Shinji with reanimated Hashirama and Tobirama, promising submission if Shinji survived. The attempt became uncontrollable when Tobirama released himself from the technique and Hashirama resisted Orochimaru’s commands 108 123 125.
After witnessing the ensuing battle, Orochimaru explained that he had wanted both to measure Shinji’s strength and demonstrate that his research could make Shinji stronger. His aim was a relationship between equals rather than obedience based solely on their difference in combat power 128.
Kabuto’s Betrayal
Kabuto’s departure undermined Orochimaru’s hope of achieving a form of immortality by passing on his knowledge. When Kabuto confronted him over the manipulation of his life, Orochimaru admitted responsibility and recognized Shinji’s earlier warning: exploiting others would eventually bring betrayal 220 272.
Kabuto left Orochimaru facing reanimated opponents, including the Second Tsuchikage, Mū. Shisui intervened, incapacitating Mū and safely releasing the reanimated Hokage with tools and a technique created by Shinji 221.
Orochimaru later told Hiruzen that he no longer wanted either Konoha or the Hokage title and condemned his former teacher’s leadership. His attention remained on research, including the experimental material Shinji brought from Urashiki Ōtsutsuki 228.
Appearance
- Face: Handsome and almost feminine, with purple eye shadow and golden, slit-pupiled eyes 76.
- Hair and accessories: Shoulder-length hair and delicate earrings 76.
- Distinguishing mannerism: Habitually extends his long tongue or runs it around his lips 76 77 78.
- Serpentine forms: Can emerge from a snake’s mouth or shed a damaged body and escape with a human upper body and snake-like lower body 76 77 219.
Personality
Early Orochimaru is predatory, calculating, and willing to attack during conversation. He feigns medical concern to reach for Shinji’s eye and treats powerful bodies as potential vessels. His obsession with immortality makes him susceptible to Itachi’s redirection, while his initial confidence collapses when Shinji proves far stronger than expected 71 77.
He is also an effective recruiter. With Hiruko, he reframes failure as an opportunity to prove Konoha wrong and surpass their previous research. Shinji suspects that the exchange may involve genjutsu, but does not establish whether Orochimaru actually used it 85.
Orochimaru’s deference does not immediately erase his desire for autonomy. He apologizes when confronted, yet withholds research access and later stages a dangerous demonstration to secure respect as Shinji’s partner. He openly describes this as a weaker person’s way of earning recognition from someone stronger 108 123 128.
Witnessing Shinji’s growth gradually changes his understanding of life. By the time of Nobihi’s experiment, he recognizes both the suffering caused by his research and the possibilities it has given others. He no longer regards personal immortality as an unquestioned goal, expressing satisfaction in witnessing Shinji’s achievement and ambivalence when offered eternal life himself 130 272.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Techniques and Body Manipulation
Orochimaru uses snakes for concealed attacks, deception, and escape 76 77 219.
- Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases attacking snakes from his sleeve 77 219.
- Decoys: Uses a clone to draw members of Shinji’s squad away from his actual position 76.
- Extended limbs: Stretches his arm to reach for Shinji’s Sharingan 77.
- Snake Limbs Hardening: Hardens an arm like steel for a powerful chopping strike; Shinji blocks it and counters without difficulty 77.
- Body shedding: Escapes attacks by leaving behind a snakeskin or discarded body. He uses this against both Shinji’s Rasengan and Obito’s impaling Wood Release 77 219.
Wind Release
Orochimaru demonstrates cutting and large-scale gust techniques, although neither overcomes Shinji’s defenses 77 78.
- Wind Cutter Technique: Produces a wind blade that cuts branches and gouges trees and earth; Shinji’s Earth-Style Wall stops it 77.
- Great Breakthrough: Generates a violent gale carrying sand and stones; Shinji’s Majestic Destroyer Flame pushes it back and forces Orochimaru’s surrender 78.
Summoning
Orochimaru summons Manda for combat and emergency escape 77 127.
- Manda demands sacrifices and threatens Orochimaru when dissatisfied with a summons 77 78.
- Orochimaru uses Manda to escape underground during the battle involving Shinji and the revived Hokage 127.
- He later summons Manda at Shinji’s request despite warning that the snake remains injured and would react violently to him 176.
Sealing and Cursed Seals
Orochimaru employs seals to contain dangerous forces and restrain research subjects 78 84.
- Fire Sealing Method: Flame Seal: Draws Shinji’s flames into a large scroll, preventing Manda from being burned to death 78.
- Cursed Seals: Anko retains an intact seal, which Orochimaru checks before acting against the squad 76.
- A White Zetsu in his laboratory is bound to an operating table by a Cursed Seal; Shinji remarks on his progress in developing them 84.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
Orochimaru researches reincarnation into another person’s body as a means of extending life. When questioned by Shinji, he reports only one attempt, which was unsuccessful 107 272.
- Hiruko nevertheless describes Orochimaru’s body-rebirth technique with admiration; this does not establish a successful use beyond Orochimaru’s own account 108.
- Shinji argues that Orochimaru cannot learn Senjutsu independently, linking the problem to the need for balanced physical and spiritual energy and inner calm 107 108.
- Orochimaru later concludes from Minato’s account that Kabuto has mastered Living Corpse Reincarnation 228.
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru reanimates Hashirama and Tobirama to confront Shinji 123.
- Demonstrated limitation: Tobirama, the technique’s creator, releases himself from its control 125.
- Control failure: Hashirama remains unaffected by Orochimaru’s attempted commands 125.
- Orochimaru subsequently recognizes similar control concerns when Kabuto deploys an improved version against him 221.
Biological Research and Medical Treatment
Orochimaru specializes in cell transplantation, bloodline analysis, and forbidden biological experimentation. His work becomes central to Shinji’s plans for physical enhancement and resistance to the Ōtsutsuki 131 133 224.
- Distinguishes the violent properties of Shinji’s primary Yang Release cells and Hashirama’s cells from the unusually adaptable Uzumaki-lineage cells isolated from Shinji 131.
- Develops artificial Hashirama-cell replicas, but reports that they are markedly less effective than genuine material or White Zetsu 133.
- Coordinates complex procedures with Hiruko and remains composed during Nobihi’s dangerous fusion, directing interventions as his body deteriorates 273.
- Researches the Eight Branches Technique and Senjutsu alongside reincarnation and Cursed Seals; the supplied material does not establish mastery of those two techniques 272.
Research Milestones
| Project / Patient | Chapter | Findings or Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Shinji–Hashirama cell comparison | 85 | Finds that Shinji’s cells are nearly as strong as Hashirama’s. |
| Yuguri’s acquired bloodline disorder | 131 | Identifies a rapid merger of her innate Water nature and spontaneously developed Lightning nature. Treats her with isolated Uzumaki cells, Shinji’s Yang Release cells, and Hashirama cells, using a carefully balanced ratio with the Uzumaki component as the stabilizer. |
| Uzumaki compatibility theory | 132 | Proposes that an Uzumaki body may be compatible with transplanted Sharingan; presents this as a theory requiring experimental proof. |
| Karin and Kurama Yakumo | 176 | Reports successful cell implants, powerful Uzumaki abilities in Karin, and exceptionally dangerous genjutsu in Yakumo. |
| Kimimaro’s disease | 176 272 | Initially finds that additional Yang energy would hasten his death. Accepts Shinji’s proposal to balance it with a Sharingan; later credits the research with allowing Kimimaro to escape his expected death. |
| Shinji’s cell transplant | 199 | An unprecedented success: Shinji exceeds a monitor threshold set at twice his previous peak physical performance. |
| Kakashi’s Sharingan transplant | 200 | Transplants a Sharingan into Kakashi while he remains at the base. |
| Nobihi’s experimental fusion | 273 274 275 282 | Directs Hiruko to administer genetic extract from Shinji after his Ten-Tails transformation during a crisis. Nobihi ultimately awakens differently colored Rinnegan and later manifests nine Truth-Seeking Orbs. Orochimaru admits that the extent of Nobihi’s depigmentation exceeded his expectations. |
