History
Early Industrialization
Before the Xinfei Merchant Guild appeared, Bunta was a quiet, remote city with roughly fifty thousand urban residents. Its finances required annual subsidies from the Kingdom Treasury, and its tax contributions ranked near the bottom of the kingdom’s twenty-six cities 198 293 793.
Xu Yi’s inventions began changing both household life and agricultural production. Magic Fans provided inexpensive summer cooling, while Magic Harvesters improved wheat harvesting enough to encourage nobles to cultivate larger areas. Students from the Baron Rector Magic Academy became an early source of workers capable of drawing production Magic Arrays 9 10 51.
Count Samo supported the guild’s expansion. New factories, rising wages, and labor shortages attracted workers from neighboring cities, turning Bunta’s formerly quiet streets into crowded commercial thoroughfares within a year 198 798.
Comprehensive Redevelopment
Rapid growth overwhelmed services designed for a much smaller population. Waste removal alone increased severalfold, prompting Count Samo and Xu Yi to develop a comprehensive plan for the city and its surrounding countryside 198 215.
The plan combined village road connections, industrial districts, residential relocation, and improvements to the Sandy River. The Xinfei and Amli Merchant Guilds took major roles in financing and construction. At the opening of the Orchid Grass Resettlement Community, the first hundred village households moved into new homes, freeing land within the planned Industrial District 198 215 241.
The rebuilt Civic Square became part of a separate image-building campaign. Xu Yi promoted its Unicorn statue as Bunta’s symbol and enlisted Haines’s newspapers to publicize the city’s transformation 298 299.
Earl Stark’s Administration
After fifteen years in office, Count Samo was replaced by Earl Manier Stark. Stark represented the kingdom’s conservative faction and sought to demonstrate that agriculture should take precedence over commerce 325 335 385.
His Commerce-Suppression and Agriculture-Promotion Policy drove the Xinfei Merchant Guild toward Falling Rain Valley and encouraged other guilds to relocate. Municipal construction was halted, leaving the streetlamp network unfinished; the guild was also forbidden to repair a failed installation because municipal affairs had been reserved to the City Lord’s Manor 338.
Stark later relaxed restrictions and announced the resumption of redevelopment, but departing businesses and changes to foreign-trade taxation severely weakened city revenue. Workers followed their employers out of Bunta, leaving the following New Year unusually quiet 355 365 385.
Agricultural output nevertheless rose substantially, aided by fertilizer. Stark was transferred to Loren City with his agricultural ability specifically cited in the appointment, while Bunta’s commerce began reviving before his departure 392.
Servini’s Administration
Servini succeeded Stark and asked Xu Yi for advice and full support in developing Bunta. Closed shops reopened, and the city rapidly recovered its commercial vitality 405 500.
Her administration supported industrial expansion, welfare programs, and closer integration between farming and commerce. Bunta’s special economic zone status allowed it to experiment with agricultural restructuring, although Parliament required both grain and tax remittances to exceed the previous year’s figures by at least thirty percent to retain that status 418 473 507.
Growing employment opportunities also attracted newcomers fleeing exploitation near the Northern Border. Servini coordinated assistance with local guilds, while Xu Yi cautioned that additional population would not automatically resolve shortages of suitable workers 504.
Royal-Backed Industry and Mass Departures
Servini left office before completing a full year as mayor following King Eric’s accession. Her unnamed successor initially promised continued support for the magic industry, but apparent prosperity concealed shrinking profits and wage cuts. At least fifteen factory disturbances protesting wage reductions occurred in a single month 526 527 528 535.
The Magic Industry Administration pressured Xinfei into transferring technologies to ten designated guilds. Preferential treatment for those businesses undermined established manufacturers and the Feilson Carriage Company’s public transit operations 534 535 554.
After Xinfei’s departure, shops closed and residents refused the designated guilds’ low wages and heavy workloads. Workers sought employment in Amplistown, the Rulson Kingdom, the Black Rice Wasteland, the Stantin Duchy, and other neighboring lands. Before the second month was half over, Bunta was nearly deserted; Servini visited and resolved to address the crisis 557.
Recovery and Metropolitan Growth
Following Servini’s coronation, Count Rivell became mayor and pursued the revival of Bunta’s magic industry. Cooperation with Xinfei restored most of the city’s former prosperity, though many guilds retained their principal operations elsewhere. Numerous local manufacturers operated as joint ventures between Xinfei and the Lampari Kingdom 642.
Rivell supported an independently operated Magic Air Conditioner production line, major water and drainage works, and expanded technical education. When revenue growth began slowing, he identified the magic industry as the city’s mainstay and sought to strengthen its workforce 673 728 793.
By Xu Yi’s later return for a personal press conference, Bunta had become the kingdom’s most populous city and a major international cargo hub. Its illuminated New District remained active deep into the night, earning its reputation as a city that never slept 1157 1255.
Geography and Districts
| Area | Description |
|---|---|
| Old City | Original walled urban center. Its permanent population eventually fell to around thirty thousand as residents moved to better-equipped new districts 407 1157. |
| New District | Spacious expansion outside the walls, with broad roads, streetlamps, bus services, factories, and high-rise buildings. Later development was deliberately directed here 407 701 1157. |
| Western Industrial District | Factory-dominated outskirts designated for industrial use, with little remaining greenery 307. |
| Southern Suburbs | Leisure and recreation area preserving vegetation; a canal brought Sandy River water into the landscaped countryside 307. |
| Later Mixed-Use District | Development on the western side combining hotels, shops, factories, apartments, and the expanded skills academy rather than separating functions into distinct zones 793. |
| Sandy River | Approximately fifty meters wide outside Bunta; its banks underwent extensive redevelopment 219 325. |
| Surrounding Countryside | Seventy-three villages were recorded in the initial Development Plan, with extensive mechanized farmland around the city 159 198. |
Government
| City Lord / Mayor | Administration |
|---|---|
| Count Sean Samo | Served for fifteen years; restrained noble mistreatment of commoners, supported Xinfei, and invested growing tax income in municipal improvements. Subsequently transferred to Sewell City 325 392. |
| Earl Manier Stark | Promoted agriculture while suppressing commerce; later softened implementation of the policy. Transferred to Loren City after Bunta’s fertilizer-assisted harvest gains 335 355 392. |
| Servini | Restored commercial support, sought Xu Yi’s development advice, and introduced reconstruction and welfare measures 405 473 507. |
| Unnamed successor appointed by Eric | Initially promised continuity, but the City Lord’s Manor later favored the ten designated guilds over established businesses 528 535 554. |
| Count Rivell | Appointed after Servini’s coronation; revived cooperation with Xinfei and supported industrial independence, utilities, and technical training 642 673 728 793. |
| Count Belmo | Mayor during Xu Yi’s later press conference; sought Xu Yi’s help when crowds overwhelmed the Old City 1157. |
- City Lord’s Manor — Administrative headquarters responsible for development plans, fiscal reports, and municipal affairs 198 338 793.
- City Guard — Armed force used to maintain street security and manage major public gatherings 325 1157.
- Commercial Association — Led by Manhattan Lanco, president of the Salank Merchant Guild, during Xu Yi’s attendance at its banquet 78.
- Magic Machinery Commercial Association — Established with support from most of Bunta’s hundred-plus magic-industry-related guilds; nearly exceeded the broader Commercial Association in size upon formation 225.
Economy
Magic Industry
- Bunta was the continent’s first true magic-industry city, with Xinfei’s presence distinguishing its development from later imitators 821.
- By Chapter 225, it contained twenty-three magic machinery manufacturers, sixty-seven small component-processing guilds, and more than a hundred guilds associated with the industry overall 225.
- Factory employment drew workers away from farming. At an annual meeting, Count Samo realized that nearly two hundred thousand people worked outside agriculture, prompting Xu Yi’s proposal for agricultural industrialization 293.
- The city’s development became a model that Xu Yi proposed extending throughout the Lampari Kingdom 361.
Fiscal Milestones
| Period | Recorded Finances |
|---|---|
| Before industrialization | Required annual treasury subsidies; tax remittances were below 50,000 gold coins two years before the report in Chapter 293 293 793. |
| Early industrial boom | Collected 1.37 million gold coins; commercial taxes exceeded one million, while agricultural taxes approached one hundred thousand. Tax remittances ranked first in the kingdom 293. |
| Stark-era contraction | Xinfei’s relocation and free trade rights granted to major guilds were expected to cost Bunta at least half its monthly tax revenue 365. |
| Stark’s annual report | Fiscal revenue totaled 1.17 million gold coins, but the final two months ran deficits 385. |
| Servini’s annual review | Tax receipts had exceeded 5.73 million gold coins before the final month; the projected annual total exceeded six million 473. |
| Later Rivell administration | Previous-year tax revenue exceeded three million gold coins, leaving a 1.2-million-gold-coin surplus after remittances and routine expenses 728. |
| Growth bottleneck | Monthly fiscal revenue reached approximately 460,000 gold coins, the kingdom’s highest, but monthly growth had declined from 9% to 8%, 6%, and finally 4% 793. |
Agriculture
- Farmland Magic Machinery spread through noble purchases and Xinfei’s Farmer Support Plan 157.
- Reclamation increased cultivated land from just over 30,000 hectares to more than 110,000 hectares 159.
- By Chapter 310, almost all suitable farmland had been cultivated; further growth depended primarily on improved farming techniques 310.
- Servini’s agricultural development base and fruit-canning operations sought to raise farmers’ incomes by increasing the commercial value of their produce 418.
| Harvest | Reported Yield |
|---|---|
| Earlier spring wheat harvest | 360,000 tonnes 310 |
| Following autumn harvest | 570,000 tonnes 310 357 |
| Next spring wheat harvest | 630,000 tonnes 310 |
| Subsequent autumn grain harvest | 760,000 tonnes 357 |
| Following spring wheat harvest | 870,000 tonnes; fertilizer accounted for much of the increase 392 |
Freight and Trade
- More than five thousand freight wagons departed daily by Chapter 477; Cargo Magic Locomotives were taking an increasing share of that traffic 477.
- The Sanglang Canal connected Bunta’s goods traffic to the kingdom’s northern waterways 477.
- By Chapter 1157, the city served as a cargo transfer station for three neighboring states 1157.
Infrastructure and Public Services
Roads and Public Transport
- Falling Rain Valley highway — Xu Yi offered to have Xinfei fund the entire road after Count Samo rejected it as unaffordable for the city 159.
- Village road network — Initially, only thirty-four of seventy-three villages had roads to Bunta. Construction began with a ten-kilometer radius and expanded outward; eventually every village was connected 198 507.
- Urban transit — The Feilson Carriage Company managed Public Carriages and public-service Magic Locomotives. Its growing fleet required new headquarters roughly two kilometers outside the western gate 407.
- Bus network — Expanded sufficiently for passengers to board throughout the city and readily reach their destinations 507.
- Street paving — By Chapter 1157, Bunta’s streets were paved throughout with cement roads 1157.
Utilities and Housing
- Magic Streetlamps — Installed on main streets under Samo; Stark’s construction halt left the network only partly completed 325 338.
- Automatic Water Supply System — Rivell’s plan included a dam, reservoirs, and at least twenty water towers. Xinfei engineers installed Mana Water Pumps to provide clean water 728.
- Drainage reconstruction — Planned alongside water supply improvements; the drainage work was expected to require at least five years. Combined investment was estimated at no less than three million gold coins 728.
- Steel pipes — Supplied through a factory established jointly by Xinfei and the Ireland United Merchant Guild 728.
- Apartment-style housing — Amli’s six-story, twenty-meter residential buildings included automatic water supply, hot-water circulation, and comprehensive sewers; prices were substantially below those of villas 793.
Welfare
- Medical security system — Residents could pay five gold coins annually for coverage waiving seventy percent of hospital fees 473.
- Armani nursing home — Provided seasonal clothes, bedding, and necessities to residents over sixty, with accommodation and care for unsupported elderly people unable to care for themselves 504 507.
- Falkor relief shelter — Offered assistance to people genuinely facing hardship 507.
Education
- Baron Rector Magic Academy — Initially Bunta’s only magic academy, attracting nearly every magically talented child from the city and nearby countryside. Its curriculum included basic magical theory and Magic Arrays 9.
- Bunta City Magic Industry Skills Training Academy — Founded by Xinfei and later taken over by the City Lord’s Manor after the guild’s departure. Rivell’s land grants, funding, and recruitment expanded it to four or five times its former size 793.
- Technical instruction — The skills academy trained thousands of students in magic machinery and received Xinfei’s foundational magic machinery theory book through Stille 793.
Population and Daily Life
| Milestone | Population Information |
|---|---|
| Original city | Roughly 50,000 urban residents; combined city and countryside population below 200,000 198 293. |
| First year of rapid growth | More than 100,000 residents inside the walls, up from fewer than 50,000 the previous year 198. |
| Early boom’s peak | Registered population exceeded 200,000, with at least another 30,000 estimated unregistered residents 385. |
| Renewed expansion | More than 300,000 people from elsewhere had registered to work in Bunta 442. |
| Later metropolis | Permanent population surpassed 600,000; including transient residents, the total potentially exceeded one million. Urban area was more than twenty times the original city’s size 1157. |
- Workers included dwarves, elves, and orcs, alongside people from across the Lampari Kingdom 442.
- Household magic machinery became a social expectation: cooking with firewood was considered outdated, and appliances increasingly formed part of marriage preparations 271.
- Xinfei’s Magic House concept encouraged complete household appliance systems. Akali’s accompanying technical book sold more than ten thousand copies in three months 501.
- Late-night shops and food stalls emerged during the early boom; the later New District’s nightlife helped establish Bunta’s “city that never slept” reputation 216 1255.
Landmarks, Media, and Events
- Civic Square — Central public gathering place rebuilt with a major lighting display. Its winged Unicorn statue became the city’s calling card, with the wings symbolizing Bunta’s future ascent 298 299.
- Bunta Daily — Local newspaper covering city news, explaining new machinery, and promoting Xinfei products. It also criticized Stark-era municipal failures, notably in “Bunta City Plunged into Darkness Once More” 62 79 338.
- A Brief History of Bunta City — Book Count Samo planned to publish as part of the city’s image-building campaign, covering both its past and contemporary condition 299.
- Circuit bicycle race — Autumn event that attracted international entrants and introduced team entries. Xu Yi proposed professional guild teams competing on bicycles produced by their own guilds 642.
- Xu Yi’s personal press conference — Held on June 18 in the Old City square. Crowds blocked surrounding streets despite extensive City Guard deployment, prompting Xu Yi to fly above the square and address them 1157.
