Background / History
Rescue and Awakening Attempt
Three days before his introduction, Yan Shaozhe was severely injured in the woods and rescued by ten-year-old Ji Feng. After recovering, he sought to repay the boy by helping awaken the martial soul that ordinary methods had failed to draw out for four years 1.
Sensing a resonance between his Bright Phoenix and Ji Feng’s hidden energy, Yan brought him to Dragon-Sighting Village’s awakening ceremony. When Zhu Chen berated Ji Feng, Yan forced the teacher to his knees with soul-power pressure and ordered him to assist. He then destroyed the ordinary six-stone array and replaced it with eight genuine Heavenly Soul Stones 1.
Yan initially expected Ji Feng to illuminate three stones and began offering to accept him as a disciple. Instead, Ji Feng lit all eight, exceeding Mu En’s four-stone result. The stones subsequently shattered, revealing a dragon silhouette and a roar powerful enough to nearly disperse Yan’s protective soul power. Despite this display, Ji Feng’s martial soul remained dormant 2 3.
Bringing Ji Feng to Shrek
Convinced that Ji Feng possessed extraordinary draconic power, Yan rushed him to Shrek Academy and sought Mu En’s help. He left Ji Feng beside Sea God Lake while reporting to his teacher 3.
During his absence, Ma Xiaotao lost control of her evil fire and attacked Ji Feng. Yan returned with Zhang Lexuan and Elder Zhuang after the boy subdued her. He extracted the dangerous fire-based soul power from Ji Feng, allowing Elder Zhuang to repair the damaged meridians, then took him to meet Mu En 4 5.
Zero Innate Soul Power
Yan fetched food during Mu En’s awakening procedure and returned with chicken soup afterward. Learning that Ji Feng’s newly awakened Defiant Evil Dragon was accompanied by zero innate soul power, he suggested that the boy’s power might simply be hidden or dormant 5 6 7.
When Mu En proposed extracting the missing Dragon Core if it remained inside Ji Feng, Yan pleaded that the child not be harmed. Unable to solve the cultivation problem, he still intended to repay his lifesaver with lifelong wealth and comfort and arranged meals from Shrek’s Inner Court 8.
Mu En privately decided to conceal his further plans from Yan because of Yan’s unusual relationship with Ji Feng 7.
Appearance
Yan appears to be in his fifties or sixties, with a tall, straight-backed figure 1.
- Wears the everyday robes of Shrek’s dean, with subtle phoenix patterns woven into the cuffs 1.
- Displays a Sea God Pavilion badge on his chest 1.
- His martial-soul manifestations are accompanied by phoenix cries, golden light, sacred radiance, and heat 1 3.
Personality
Yan is protective of Ji Feng and openly condemns Zhu Chen’s bullying. He tolerates the boy’s teasing and sarcasm, responds immediately when he finds him injured, and remains concerned for his welfare even after zero innate soul power appears to rule out cultivation 1 3 4 7 8.
He takes considerable pride in Shrek’s resources and deeply reveres Mu En, repeatedly citing his teacher’s achievements when explaining the Heavenly Soul Stones. Ji Feng’s unprecedented results overwhelm that confidence: Yan moves from enthusiastic praise to disbelief, briefly convincing himself that his recent injuries must be causing hallucinations 1 2.
