Appearance
Dementors are tall, gaunt beings draped in black cloaks. They radiate an icy, despairing aura that chills the air and drains the mood of nearby people. Their presence around Azkaban is accompanied by dark clouds, gray mist, and an oppressive sense of hopelessness 71 72.
- Black hooded cloaks conceal most of their bodies 71 72.
- Their speech is conveyed through harsh, rattling or cackling sounds beneath their hoods 71 72.
- Large gatherings create dense gray mist saturated with coldness and despair 72.
- Azkaban's Dementor Leader is nearly five meters tall—almost twice the height of an ordinary Dementor 72.
Personality
Dementors are driven primarily by hunger for happiness, hope, and souls. A vibrant, happy wizard is irresistible to them, particularly because Azkaban's despairing prisoners normally provide only meager emotional sustenance 71 72.
Despite their terrifying reputation, they are intelligent enough to obey Ministry arrangements, guard a prison, negotiate through a leader, recognize danger, and coordinate a request for reinforcements 72. Once Charle proves capable of annihilating and devouring them, they quickly abandon resistance and accept his authority in exchange for a reliable food supply 73 74.
Abilities & Traits
Emotional Feeding
Dementors feed on human happiness and hope, creating coldness, despair, and the loss of positive memories in their victims 71.
- Azkaban prisoners produce limited sustenance because prolonged imprisonment leaves them numb and hopeless 72 73.
- A large number of cheerful, hopeful prisoners enables the Dementor population to feed well and reproduce 74.
- Charle restructures prisoner life specifically to preserve enough hope and happiness for sustainable feeding 73.
Dementor's Kiss
A Dementor can extract and consume a victim's soul, leaving the victim a “living corpse” with no known recovery method 52 71 75.
- The Kiss is used against selected Azkaban prisoners with the Ministry's tacit permission when ordinary emotional feeding is insufficient 72.
- Charle observes the process repeatedly and gains material for deducing Soul Extraction magic 74.
- Conventional defensive magic such as the Shield Charm cannot block Soul Extraction 75.
Reproduction by Division
Dementors do not reproduce through ordinary biological means. Given sufficient happiness and hope, even a small population can split into many new Dementors and grow exponentially 71 74.
- Charle observes individual Dementors producing new entities by splitting apart 74.
- Their growth stops at an instinctive population limit; the Dementors fear that exceeding it will attract an unknown natural predator connected to their Remote Era origins 75.
- Newly created Dementors require time to mature before dividing again 75.
Collective Despair Mist
When dozens of Dementors gather, they generate a thick gray mist that magnifies coldness and despair 72.
- The mist makes summoning a Patronus substantially more difficult 72.
- A lone ordinary Patronus is eventually overwhelmed and dissipates within the mist 72.
- Charle's platinum holy magic burns through the mist and can annihilate Dementors directly 72.
Intelligence and Organization
Dementors can understand commands, carry out prison duties, and organize under a leader who handles negotiations with the Ministry 72.
- The Azkaban Leader attempts to send a magical distress signal to the Ministry when Charle attacks 72.
- After the leader is devoured, Charle appoints a replacement and orders the population to manage prisoners for maximum emotional output 73.
- The Dementors later use Charle's mark magic to summon him when imprisoned drug lords riot 115.
History
Dementors serve as Azkaban's primary guards on an isolated, anti-Apparition-protected island. They feed on the emotions of prisoners and, when permitted, consume souls through the Dementor's Kiss. Their role makes Azkaban synonymous with despair throughout the Wizarding World 71 72.
Minister Cornelius Fudge brings Charle Evans near Azkaban intending to frighten and manipulate him. Charle instead recognizes the Dementors as ideal nourishment for his holy spells and secretly places a Time-Space Mark on the prison before returning alone through his Goblin-compatible Apparition 71.
On arriving, Charle lures Dementors with deliberately displayed happiness and devours them through Only I Am the Honored God and Holy Kingdom. Each Dementor strengthens his holy magic and grants 10,000 Deduction Points 71. After more than a dozen disappear, the surviving Dementors gather at the Central Fortress under their leader 72.
The leader initially believes no wizard can truly kill a Dementor, but Charle's platinum holy light destroys them outright. The leader's appeal to protected-creature legislation fails; Charle devours the leader and other powerful Dementors, then forces the survivors to submit 72 73.
Charle redesignates Azkaban as a “Dementor breeding base.” He orders the Dementors to keep prisoners healthier and more hopeful so their emotions can sustain reproduction, then imports Pablo Escobar and his men as additional prisoners. The resulting emotional supply causes the Dementor population to multiply rapidly, allowing Charle to harvest them again for over a million Deduction Points and greatly strengthened holy spells 73 74.
The breeding operation eventually reaches a limit when the Dementors' inherited instinct prevents further reproduction. They fear that an excessive population will draw the attention of an unknown predator from the Remote Era 75.
Relationships
- Charle Evans — Predator, master, and self-declared owner of the Azkaban Dementor breeding base. He devours Dementors to empower his holy magic, but provides prisoners whose hope and happiness allow the survivors to feed and reproduce 71 73 74.
- Dementor Leader — Azkaban's original leader attempts to organize resistance, request Ministry aid, and invoke protected-creature status; Charle devours it alongside other strong Dementors 72.
- Replacement Dementor Leader — Appointed by Charle after the original leader's death and tasked with implementing his prisoner-management system 73 75.
- Azkaban prisoners — Primary emotional food source. Charle treats their hope, happiness, and living conditions as inputs for Dementor reproduction 73 74.
- Cornelius Fudge — Assumes Dementors will terrify Charle into political obedience, unknowingly directing him toward the resource he needs most 71.
- Ministry of Magic — Maintains an agreement with Dementors to guard Azkaban and recognizes their protected status under concealed legislation 72.
Notable Quotes
“We Dementors are protected animals!” 72
“We have always been a peace-loving race. We have never killed anyone.” 72
Trivia
- Dementors are described as “pure evil” because they oppose human happiness and hope while seeking souls, unlike vampires and werewolves, who are not necessarily malicious 71.
- Their leader claims the race is legally protected as a rare magical creature under legislation from the Humanoid Magical Creature Protection Association 72.
- Charle considers every Dementor both spell nourishment and a source of Deduction Points, calling them “delicate and adorable” after learning that his summoned god-form can consume them on his behalf 71.
