Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan — original timeline 1 36 Obtained through Itachi’s eyes. Orochimaru later argues that Sasuke’s next ocular development was interrupted by the premature awakening of his Rinnegan.
Rinnegan — original timeline 1 Awakened after receiving the Sage of Six Paths’ power at sixteen. Later lost following the battle against Isshiki.
Mangekyō Sharingan — altered timeline 2 Awakens immediately after returning to the Valley of the End. His accumulated grief and reunion with Naruto trigger the transformation.
White Cursed Seal 5 6 Orochimaru transfers Hashirama Senju’s chakra through Sasuke’s Cursed Seal, turning it white. It stores power for gradual absorption without carrying the donor’s consciousness.
Initial Wood Release access 8 Uses Great Forest Technique to restrain Shin, demonstrating early access to Hashirama’s power.
Accelerated absorption and Deep Forest Emergence 13 14 Sasori’s poison and attacks force faster absorption of the White Cursed Seal. Sasuke overcomes the poison and produces a large-scale forest.
Susanoo, second form 14 Manifests the bow-bearing form and destroys the Third Kazekage puppet with two arrows.

Background / History

Original timeline

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sasuke and Naruto sealed Kaguya. His subsequent defeat by Naruto at the Valley of the End opened his heart, and he chose to become a guardian of Naruto’s ninja way. In later years, they fought Momoshiki, Kinshiki, Urashiki, and Isshiki; the last battle cost Sasuke his Rinnegan and Naruto the Nine-Tails, prompting both to step back from the front lines 1.

The peace ended when Ōtsutsuki Shi Mei awakened and massacred the Shinobi World. Sasuke survived by casting Izanagi with the right eye inherited from Itachi, but remained critically wounded. Orochimaru evacuated him aboard a spacecraft left by Kara. Shi Mei then drained their planet through a God Tree, consumed its Chakra Fruit, and ascended to godhood, leaving Sasuke and Orochimaru as the world’s only survivors 1.

In Konoha Year 101, the dying Sasuke asked to see his homeland again. Orochimaru restored his sight with cloned Sharingan and offered a way to send his soul into his younger body. Sasuke accepted, taking a chakra sphere containing Orochimaru’s knowledge, memories, and emotions. Orochimaru concealed the technique’s full cost: both he and Karasuki were destroyed after sending Sasuke back 1.

Return to the past

Sasuke awakens in Konoha Year 61, immediately after his first Valley of the End battle with Naruto—exactly forty years earlier. Seeing Naruto alive renews his determination to prevent the catastrophe. He nevertheless deserts Konoha again, believing Orochimaru’s research is indispensable and that he has thirty years before Shi Mei awakens 2.

Four days later, Sasuke defeats the younger Orochimaru and transfers the memory sphere into him. Rather than remaining a prospective vessel, Sasuke becomes the guiding force of their alliance. Their shared objective is to combine Uchiha and Senju power, establish a Six Paths foundation, and eventually supply the genetic components needed to make Sasuke a true Ōtsutsuki 1 2 9.

Appearance

  • Usual clothing: A white kimono, dark blue trousers, and a purple rope belt; he also wears a white cloak during the Sasori battle 2 13.
  • Mangekyō pattern: Six-pointed stars replace the Sharingan’s three tomoe 2 13.
  • White Cursed Seal: Initially spreads over part of his left side; by Stage One, its markings cover his entire body 6 21.
  • State Two: His skin and hair become pale. Underwater adaptation produces gills and a sword-like dorsal fin 50.
  • Original-timeline condition: Appears emaciated and blind at the beginning of the novel, surviving through medical equipment and possessing only his right arm 1.

Personality

Sasuke’s youthful appearance conceals decades of grief and experience. He remains driven to become stronger, but revenge against Itachi no longer defines that ambition. His priority is protecting the world and recovering the peaceful family future he imagined after its destruction 1 11 13.

He is composed under provocation and values ingenuity over excessive force. Against unfamiliar enemies, he studies their techniques, prepares decoys, and changes tactics as their weaknesses emerge. Orochimaru considers this resourcefulness more important than either Hashirama’s power or Sasuke’s prospective Ōtsutsuki transformation 7 12 15 23.

His remorse also changes how he treats others. He gives Shin an opportunity to abandon his destructive beliefs, accepts Kabuto’s support without treating him as expendable, and insists that their group advance and retreat together. His concern can still become controlling: Orochimaru must remind him that protecting Karin does not entitle him to decide her future 8 28 46.

Sasuke remains willing to kill threats he cannot redeem. After defeating Sasori, he acknowledges that he lacks Naruto’s ability to turn enemies into friends, but still respects Sasori as an opponent and asks for his final wishes 17.

Abilities & Skills

Retained Experience and Tactical Analysis

Sasuke brings the technical knowledge and habits of his older self into a young body, although that body cannot immediately sustain all his former techniques 2 6 23.

  • Wields Fire, Lightning, Wind, Water, Earth, and Yin Release after years spent strengthening his shinobi fundamentals in the original timeline 8.
  • Uses one-handed seals, swordsmanship, taijutsu, and sound-based positioning; fights Kakuzu and Hidan without activating his Sharingan 8 22 24.
  • Combines shadow clones, steel wire, traps, and elemental techniques to defeat stronger defenses 12 15 23.
  • Future knowledge is incomplete: he never studied Sasori’s full abilities and had never encountered Kakuzu or Hidan in his previous life 11 22.

Sharingan and Genjutsu

His Mangekyō awakens through the emotional weight of his previous life rather than Naruto’s death 2.

  • Incapacitates Kabuto and Kakashi with ocular genjutsu 2 4.
  • Shows Kabuto the future and later gives Suigetsu and Jugo fragments of future events 3 46.
  • Uses Bringer-of-Darkness Technique to blind Shin’s twelve clones before disabling them 8.
  • Reads subtle battlefield changes, including Sasori’s concealed underwater iron sand 13.
  • Repeated Mangekyō use causes pain, bleeding, and deteriorating vision. Hashirama’s Yang Release alone offers little protection for a paired Mangekyō using Susanoo 15 17 19 36.

Amaterasu and Flame Manipulation

Sasuke combines Amaterasu’s black flames with advanced shape control, displaying skill that Orochimaru associates with the Eternal Mangekyō despite possessing only the Mangekyō in the altered timeline 7.

  • Burns Orochimaru’s serpent form and destroys Sasori’s gathered puppet army 2 15.
  • Shapes black flames into ordinary-style Fire Release attacks and Susanoo arrows 7 19.
  • Uses Kagutsuchi to control ordinary flames as well as black flames, producing a meteor-like barrage during training 10.
  • Archer Drake: Concentrates Fire Release for penetration and efficiency; absorbs Kakuzu’s strengthened flames and forces him to deploy several elemental masks 23.
  • Scorch Release: Blown-Glass Flame World: Expands shaped black flames with powerful Wind Release through Susanoo. Inspired by Kaguya’s Expansive Truth-Seeking Orb, it was originally intended as a collaborative technique with Naruto 50.

Susanoo

Sasuke uses Susanoo for protection, restraint, sword attacks, and ranged combat, progressing from skeletal manifestations to the armored Crow Tengu form 4 14 16.

  • Blocks Kakashi’s Lightning Blade and restrains him after genjutsu 4.
  • Creates a Miniature Susanoo shaped like a tiny Perfect Susanoo, killing Shin’s teleporting miniature while preserving its eye 8.
  • Uses the second form’s bow to destroy the Third Kazekage puppet 14.
  • Combines storm lightning, Susanoo, and the White Cursed Seal into Susanoo: White Kirin, destroying Sasori’s Shukaku colossus 16 17.
  • Limits: Early forms have openings that admit poison or allow Sasuke to be pulled outside. Sustained use strains his eyes, and opponents can exploit its mobility or absorb its chakra 13 15 49.
  • Armored Susanoo does not eliminate suffocation and exhaustion inside Kisame’s moving water prison 49.

White Cursed Seal and Wood Release

The White Cursed Seal is designed to grant Hashirama’s full power while preserving Sasuke’s Uchiha identity, rather than merely approximating Hashirama through a conventional cell transplant 9.

  • Gradually changes his cells and chakra toward Hashirama’s constitution; keeping it active in daily life trains his body to withstand the stored power 6.
  • Releases new markings as earlier ones are absorbed, accelerating transformation under extreme pressure 13.
  • Provides Wood Release techniques including Great Forest Technique, Cutting Sprigs, and Deep Forest Emergence 8 13 22.
  • Develops Wood Release: Hidden Shadow Snake Hands, a binding technique that drains chakra 10.
  • Gains increasing poison resistance, regeneration, and bodily hardening through absorption; these defenses are incomplete early in training 13 24 25.
  • Adaptive Modification: State Two changes his body to suit the environment, allowing underwater breathing and rapid movement. Orochimaru states that these added capabilities will remain after the seal’s core is absorbed 50.

Rasengan, Lightning Release, and Sealing

Sasuke adopts the Rasengan as an alternative when deliberately avoiding Sharingan-dependent Chidori combat 21.

  • White Rasengan: Infuses Rasengan with the White Cursed Seal’s power, breaking Kakuzu’s Earth Release hardening and later impaling Kisame with wooden spikes 25 49.
  • Chidori Sharp Spear: Extends and reshapes Chidori to strike from a distance, delivering the fatal blow to Sasori’s living core 17.
  • White Lightning Release: Moves too quickly for Kisame to absorb and severs his arm 50.
  • Contract Seal: Severs the connection underlying Hidan’s injury-transfer ritual after Sasuke deduces that it functions through a contract 25.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Used for close combat, lightning-charged attacks, and Water Release sword techniques 8 19 22.
  • Steel wire and Fūma Shuriken — Support traps, electrically charged weapon nets, and the gathering of Sasori’s puppets for an Amaterasu attack 15 23.
  • Smoke bombs — Obstruct the vision-guided blades of Sasori’s Shukaku colossus 16.
  • Forehead protector — Left on Naruto’s chest after Sasuke chooses to desert Konoha again 2.
  • Orochimaru’s memory sphere — Carried within Sasuke’s soul through time and transferred to the younger Orochimaru; no longer retained afterward 1 2.
  • Shinigami mask — Retrieved from the Uzumaki Clan’s Mask Hall for Orochimaru’s ritual 4 5.

Relationships

  • Naruto Uzumaki — Closest friend and intended partner against the Ōtsutsuki. Sasuke leaves him to pursue power but deliberately provokes a more ambitious training program, hoping Naruto will eventually stand beside him 1 2 4 9.
  • Orochimaru — Former enemy and teacher who became like family during Sasuke’s final ten years. His sacrifice enables the return; his younger self becomes Sasuke’s researcher, strategist, and principal ally 1 2 6.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Ally and regular sparring partner. Sasuke helps establish his trust through evidence, while Kabuto’s Blade Reversal provides transport and logistical support 3 8 9 10.
  • Karin — Longstanding admirer whom Sasuke previously used and hurt. He rescues her, feels responsible for her past suffering, and ultimately respects her decision to inherit the Ketsuryūgan 19 28 34.
  • Sakura Haruno — Wife in the original timeline and teammate in the altered one. Sasuke suppresses his lingering affection because he believes the world’s danger must take priority 4.
  • Sarada Uchiha — Daughter in the original timeline. Her death remains part of his grief; he remembers her destroying Shin’s miniature eye-bearing creature 1 7.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Elder brother. Sasuke abandons revenge as his defining purpose and refuses to obtain strength by taking the living Itachi’s life or sight 13 36.
  • Fugaku Uchiha — Father whose missing Mangekyō eyes Sasuke intends to recover for a new Eternal Mangekyō 36.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Former teacher who tries to prevent Sasuke from returning to Orochimaru. Sasuke defeats him and leaves a warning intended for Naruto 4.
  • Obito Uchiha — Adversary Sasuke hopes to recruit eventually. Sasuke also suspects him of possessing Fugaku’s eyes 22 36.
  • Suigetsu and Jugo — People from Sasuke’s past whom he refuses to abandon. After Obito recruits them into Akatsuki, Sasuke subdues them without serious injury and shows them fragments of the future 19 20 45 46.
  • Gaara — Target of a rescue effort undertaken partly out of respect for Naruto’s bond with him. Sasuke accepts an attempted Impure World Reincarnation as a last resort after finding him unresponsive 43 45.
  • Ōtsutsuki Shi Mei — Destroyer of Sasuke’s original world and the ultimate threat driving his return and transformation plan 1 2.

Trivia

  • Sasuke favors his right hand after returning because he spent decades without his left arm in the original timeline 2.
  • Blue Moon Island can be found because he memorized its spatial coordinates with his former Rinnegan; surrounding fog and failing compasses otherwise make navigation extremely difficult 10.
  • The miniature Perfect Susanoo used against Shin does not establish that Sasuke can manifest a full-sized Perfect Susanoo in the altered timeline; during the Kisame battle, Orochimaru identifies that level of power as beyond Sasuke’s current options 8 49.
