Background / History

Kirigakure and Orochimaru

Suigetsu escaped from the Bloody Mist Village before Orochimaru captured him for his abilities. He regarded their arrangement as mutually useful: staying with Orochimaru offered comfort and protection from pursuit, but did not earn his loyalty. His older brother, Hozuki Mangetsu, had belonged to the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist and could wield all seven blades 29 30.

Northern Hideout attack

When Deidara and the masked Obito attacked the Northern Hideout, Karin ordered Suigetsu to flee with Jugo. He initially wanted to escape alone, agreeing only after she warned that losing Orochimaru’s important test subject would bring consequences. Obito pursued and imprisoned both men in his space-time dimension, where Suigetsu spent several days in darkness and nearly starved 20 29.

Their disappearing chakra led Sasuke’s group to fear they were dead. Orochimaru’s failed attempt to summon their souls instead indicated that they were alive, probably confined within Obito’s dimension 19 20.

Recruitment into Akatsuki

Obito released the pair after Kakuzu and Hidan’s deaths and offered them positions as replacements. Suigetsu immediately accepted to protect himself. Despite his objections, Obito then gave him a Sharingan and made him part of the plan to restrain Jugo 29 30.

Suigetsu requested a suitable ninja sword. Obito instead presented Mangetsu’s lost sword-summoning scroll, prompting an emotional pledge of allegiance. Privately, however, Suigetsu reasoned that Mangetsu would never have entrusted such a precious possession to a friend. He began to suspect that Obito—known to him as Tobi or “Madara”—had killed his brother, and resolved to remain close enough to confront him 30 32.

Pain’s admission test required the newcomers to touch his robe. Although Suigetsu and Jugo failed, their coordinated attacks and Suigetsu’s final Water Gun, which grazed Pain’s cheek, earned them acceptance. Suigetsu became Three of Akatsuki, replacing Hidan, and the pair received the assignment to capture Shukaku 31 32 33.

Capture of Gaara

Obito transported the pair directly into Sunagakure and reassured Suigetsu that the village’s leadership would not defend Gaara. During the battle, Suigetsu infiltrated Gaara’s defensive sand with his liquefied body, creating an opening for Jugo. He then used his Sharingan to stop Jugo from killing their target, preserving the mission’s requirement to bring Gaara back alive 37 38.

Shukaku’s emergence overwhelmed both attackers, and Suigetsu decided they should retreat. After Gaara saved the village at the risk of his life, Suigetsu seized him and fled with Jugo. Sasuke’s intervention

While the pair waited for Zetsu to dispose of Gaara’s body, Sasuke broke into the cave. He restrained them with Wood Release and Susanoo, used lightning to prevent Suigetsu from liquefying, and rendered both unconscious through their Sharingan. Sasuke also stopped Kankuro from killing them, citing their shared history 45.

Sasuke brought them to Blue Moon Island and explained that he had shown them fragments of the future. More than twenty days later, both remained asleep; Akatsuki’s tailed-beast hunt continued without them 46 47.

Personality

Suigetsu is outspoken, irreverent, and strongly motivated by self-preservation. He flatters dangerous people when cornered and changes his behavior quickly when he notices surveillance: after spotting a White Zetsu clone, he turns criticism of Obito into a loud declaration of gratitude. His bravado also exceeds his confidence; a promise to stake his head on capturing Shukaku leaves him frightened once the mission begins 29 30 37.

Pride can make him reckless, as shown by his opening attack on Pain with the dangerous Shibuki. Under pressure, however, he becomes analytical and persistent. His attachment to Mangetsu gives him a reason to endure Akatsuki’s dangers beyond immediate survival, while cooperation with Jugo develops from reluctant necessity into effective battlefield teamwork 32 33.
