Background / History
Family and early reputation
Obito’s mother was killed by a Kirigakure ninja. His father, Ke, disobeyed a retreat order to pursue the killer, who had become the Third Mizukage, and died taking him down. Konoha and Kirigakure concealed the incident for political reasons, and Ke’s name was never placed on Konoha’s Memorial Stone. His final lesson to Obito was to cherish comrades as dearly as his own life 424.
The Uchiha remembered young Obito as an inattentive underachiever who struggled with the Great Fireball Technique. He nevertheless became known as a hero of the Third Shinobi World War after the battle at Kannabi Bridge, where Kakashi inherited his eye and Obito was believed to have died 87 127 128 374.
Madara’s successor
Madara selected Obito after discovering his unusual eye, shaped his outlook, and introduced him to the Eye of the Moon Plan. Madara later explicitly claimed to have molded Obito into the man he became 211 224.
Rin Nohara’s death was identified as a turning point in Obito’s transformation. Shikaku suspected Madara had arranged the circumstances surrounding it, but presented that explanation as a theory rather than established fact 128.
Obito subsequently controlled the Fourth Mizukage, Yagura, and helped create the Bloody Mist. He also caused Konoha’s Nine-Tails attack, resulting in Minato and Kushina’s deaths and intensifying suspicion toward the Uchiha. He later admitted that he deliberately allowed the clan’s situation to deteriorate and assisted Itachi in killing the Military Police Force, seeking their eyes as spares 93 367.
Appearance
- War-scarred face: His unmasking exposes a face familiar to Kakashi and the Uchiha despite the changes caused by war 93 374.
- Masks: Uses an orange mask, a Tiger-Skin Mask, and later a white mask with an opening for his forehead eye 97 367 416.
- Akatsuki clothing: Wears the organization’s robe while presenting himself as Madara or Tobi 31.
- Artificial-body implant: A face of Hashirama is concealed on his chest; its eye sockets house Madara’s Rinnegan during later battles 345 346 351.
- Six Paths form: Bears a skin-connected haori, Truth-Seeking Orbs, and a staff that can be reshaped into other weapons 321 333 347.
- Post-Māra attire: Wears a blood-red haori over a black kimono and hakama. Shapes his Truth-Seeking Orbs into earrings, prayer beads, bracelets, a belt, and other ornaments 486.
Personality
As Akatsuki’s covert leader, Obito combines intimidation with rewards chosen to exploit individual needs. He gives Jugo a Sharingan to restrain his violent impulses and wins Suigetsu’s loyalty with Mangetsu’s sword scroll, while warning both that betrayal will not free them from him. Later, he privately plans to kill them once their usefulness ends 29 30 97.
He regards allies and casualties primarily through their strategic value. Sasori’s death removes an obstacle to his plan, while Kakuzu’s death creates an opening to redirect Akatsuki toward tailed-beast collection. Nevertheless, his concern for Kisame is genuine enough that he attempts to interrupt treatment for a shattered heart to rescue him 18 26 138.
Repeated defeats by Sasuke expose both his arrogance and insecurity. He alternates between careful analysis, emotional fixation, and increasingly destructive attempts to regain control. Even when Kisame rejects Infinite Tsukuyomi, Obito protects his convictions by assuming Itachi has brainwashed him 258 300 333.
Rin’s return finally forces him to acknowledge that his pursuit of “freedom” concealed an unwillingness to face grief and responsibility. After Sasuke rejects his attempt to atone through death, Obito begins confessing his crimes and making amends through continued life. His later conduct combines restraint toward former enemies, renewed loyalty to comrades, and a mischievous sense of humor 362 363 367 407 474.
Abilities & Skills
Kamui
Kamui provides transportation, phasing, and spatial attacks through Obito’s personal dimension 121 122.
- Phasing: Lets attacks pass through him by displacing his body into the Kamui dimension. Before his later upgrades, continuous phasing lasts five minutes 121 125.
- Long-range attacks: Can transfer an opponent’s head into his dimension; he uses this against Kabuto 345.
- Kamui Shuriken: Susanoo projectiles pass through barriers and track a target’s position in space 122.
- Weapon infusion: A cut from his Kamui-enhanced sword triggers spatial transfer, reducing the practical impact of Kamui’s activation delay 123.
- Kamui: Lightning Blade: Combines a lightning-wreathed hand attack with a spatial vortex 479.
- Early vulnerability: Must become tangible to perform certain attacks, giving Sasuke opportunities to counter him. Enemies inside his dimension can also attack his displaced body 121 122.
- Jinchūriki restrictions: Initially cannot use Kamui after becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki; Amenotokotachi later removes that restriction 321 345.
Blade Reversal and Divine Illumination
Blade Reversal is the dōjutsu of Obito’s father, Ke. Its fusion with Kamui produces a new Eternal Mangekyō pair and Divine Illumination 166 424 425.
- Spatial cutting: Blade Reversal sends space-cutting attacks through enemy techniques 472.
- Marked-target transfer: Obito discovers that it can move targets within the same space and share markings with Kamui 321.
- Marking limitation: Blade Reversal marks physical objects rather than space; its paired-eye applications require external marked objects 166.
- Divine Illumination: Erases Kinshiki’s axe and dismisses Obito’s own Aotian Rasengan before it kills Urashiki 464 473.
Amenotokotachi
The innate technique of Obito’s Six-Tomoe Rinnegan periodically restores him to a recorded condition, including expended chakra 344 345.
- Awakening restoration: Returns his body to its best previous state and removes that state’s side effects, restoring his jinchūriki power and unrestricted Kamui 345.
- Repeated replenishment: Restores drained chakra and expended Truth-Seeking Orbs 354.
- Physical restoration: Recreates the destroyed Hashirama face and Rinnegan on his chest 479 480.
- Positive effects remain: Does not remove the Yachihoko mark on his hand, leaving an avenue for hostile control 478 479.
- Resource generation: Allows him to pour his entire chakra supply into a God Tree, recover it at the next reset, and contribute it again 489.
- Not an absolute defense: Sasuke exploits restoration intervals and chakra depletion to commandeer one of Madara’s Rinnegan abilities 357.
Rinnegan and Limbo
Obito uses both transplanted Rinnegan abilities and his own Six-Tomoe Rinnegan. Amenotokotachi’s special restoration makes him effectively the original owner of Madara’s eyes 344 345 468.
- Deva Path: Uses Banshō Ten’in for attraction and Shinra Tensei for repulsion 243 258.
- Preta Path: Absorbs ninjutsu and tailed-beast chakra; later incorporates absorption into Fire Release after consulting Sasuke 243 245 471.
- Absorption limit: Purely physical air blades are not neutralized by that chakra-absorption technique 471.
- Naraka Path: Combines its use with deception to force Kinkaku into revealing the answer needed to seal him 243.
- Limbo: Border Jail: Normally fields four shadows with Madara’s complete pair of Rinnegan; losing control of one eye reduces his available shadow count 351 357.
- Limbo escalation: Has the shadows summon Susanoo and deploy Limbo: Tengai Shinsei 351.
- Inherited repertoire: Also possesses Ohototono Earth God and abilities from Madara’s and Izuna’s Mangekyō stages, though he generally favors his established techniques 468.
Ōgetsuhime and Regeneration
Ōgetsuhime increases Obito’s power through recovery from injury, provided his resolve remains firm 325.
- Ten-Tails regeneration: Repairs bodily injuries and soul damage, including damage left by Sasuke’s Amaterasu 321.
- Recovery-based growth: Reconnecting with a Ten-Tails tail allows him to regenerate and gain additional Truth-Seeking Orbs 332 333.
- Suppression weakness: Sealing the Ten-Tails and preventing him from recalling it sharply restricts his regeneration and Ōgetsuhime’s effectiveness 328 331.
- Survival breakthrough: His recovery from Māra’s overwhelming chakra produces an unprecedented increase in power 480 486.
Six Paths Power and Truth-Seeking Orbs
As a Ten-Tails jinchūriki, Obito gains flight, immense vitality and chakra, Yin-Yang Release, and freely shaped Truth-Seeking Orbs 321 322 325.
- Adaptive weapons: Forms staffs, shuriken, spikes, shields, drills, bombs, and a large scepter 334 347 354 471.
- Ninjutsu nullification: Incorporates Yin-Yang Release into the orbs to counter ordinary ninjutsu 322.
- Soul attacks: Embeds compressed Truth-Seeking Orb cores inside Minato’s soul, threatening to destroy it 334.
- Tailed Beast Bomb enhancement: Covers a Ten-Tails bomb in a Truth-Seeking Orb membrane 325.
- Countermeasure: Senjutsu-enhanced attacks can oppose the orbs 322 334.
Wood Release, Fire Release, and Swordsmanship
Hashirama-based power gives Obito large-scale Wood Release alongside his Uchiha techniques 201 345.
- Wood Release: Uses clones, Deep Forest Emergence, restraining wood, and a Wood Dragon 243 319 464.
- God Tree-enhanced sage art: Creates True Several Thousand Hands with the God Tree’s power and equips its fists with Ten-Tails Tailed Beast Bombs 416.
- Fire Release: Uses Great Fireball in direct clashes and experiments with integrating Preta Path absorption into it 122 471.
- Swordsmanship: Combines precise cuts with Kamui to dismantle Sasuke’s Susanoo-wielding clones 123.
Space-Time Barriers
Obito develops barriers that prevent opponents from escaping through spatial transportation 325 416.
- Kamui: Eight Pillars of Evil Formation: Uses eight spikes and the Ten-Tails’ Six Paths power to seal Konoha’s ruins against transportation to the outside 325.
- Uchiha Blazing Fire Formation: Channels the Demonic Statue and tailed beasts through the statue’s ten fingers 300.
- Yomotsu Hirasaka Seal: Uses his forehead Rinne Sharingan to nullify space-time techniques and close Jigen’s portal 416.
- Distinct from Yomotsu Hirasaka: Earlier attempts to reproduce Sasuke’s portal technique fail because Obito lacks the required Byakugan 349.
Genjutsu and Impure World Reincarnation
Obito uses ocular hypnosis and reanimation to interrogate, recruit, and control fighters 97 243 295.
- Sharingan interrogation: Tests Suigetsu’s account through genjutsu, though Sasuke’s layered safeguard supplies a false cover story 97.
- Living combatants: Controls prominent ninja from several nations with Sharingan genjutsu 295.
- Reanimation: Summons Kinkaku, Ginkaku, Inoichi, Mist swordsmen, former jinchūriki, and Mito Uzumaki 243 267 278 298 300.
- Undying special-operations troops: Uses captured Mist ANBU as sacrifices to create reanimated White Zetsu soldiers 278.
- Control limitation: Mito retains substantial awareness despite the reanimation talisman 300.
Takami Musubi and Great Almsgiving
Obito’s later abilities support allies as well as direct combat 489 500.
- Takami Musubi: Amplifies ten Ten-Tails’ worth of incoming chakra to forty before transferring it into a God Tree. It cannot amplify his own chakra in that application 489.
- Great Almsgiving: Shares his abilities with other people; different abilities can go to different recipients 500.
- Sharing limit: Each individual ability can be shared with only one person 505.
- Ten Directions: Shares the technique with Sasuke, exposing him to branches of possible futures on an overwhelming scale 505.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Taking Control of Akatsuki
Sasori’s death gives Obito an opportunity to undermine Nagato’s Tailed Beast Weapon Plan and enter Akatsuki openly as Tobi. He takes Sasori’s ring and joins Deidara’s retaliatory mission against Orochimaru’s Northern Hideout 18 19.
During that attack, he captures Suigetsu and Jugo. After equipping them with Sharingan and recruiting them as replacements for fallen members, he pressures Pain to accelerate the tailed-beast hunt. Pain accepts their membership, and the operation begins ahead of schedule 29 30 31 33.
Failed Attempts to Control Sasuke
Obito repeatedly evaluates Sasuke as a possible asset or replacement for Nagato. After Sasuke’s battle with Itachi, he intervenes to obtain Itachi’s eyes and make Sasuke dependent on him. Karin and Kabuto stop him, and Sasuke exposes his identity before escaping 23 26 54 60.
In Konoha, Obito removes his mask before Kakashi, admits responsibility for the Nine-Tails attack, and uses Rin’s death to break Kakashi emotionally. He escapes Sasuke through Izanagi and takes back Kakashi’s Sharingan 93 94 96.
His reunited eyes make him much more dangerous, but Sasuke defeats him during the Seventh Battle. Obito sacrifices his left eye to Izanagi and survives with a shattered heart, which he repairs using Hashirama cells 97 122 123 125 138.
Rebuilding His Forces
Obito turns to reanimation, tailed-beast chakra, and controlled ninja to rebuild his strength. He captures Kinkaku and Ginkaku in their own Six Paths tools, abducts Tsunade, and clashes with Jiraiya and Konan 243 245.
His later efforts include reviving Inoichi and former Mist swordsmen, capturing Ao, and creating undying White Zetsu operatives. He assembles 87,000 White Zetsu, reanimated jinchūriki, the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, and genjutsu-controlled fighters for an assault on Blue Moon Island 267 278 295.
Blue Moon Island Invasion
Obito attacks while Orochimaru’s allies are conducting the Seven-Star Lamp Formation. Sasuke, Itachi, and Nagato meet the invasion, inflicting catastrophic losses on his White Zetsu army 296.
He deploys the New Six Paths of Pain and then reanimated Mito Uzumaki, but his forces fail to settle the battle. Shikaku persuades him to stop focusing on revenge and return to the mission, prompting him to prepare the Uchiha Blazing Fire Formation 298 300.
Ten-Tails and Infinite Tsukuyomi
After another defeat and the loss of his original right eye to Izanagi, Obito obtains Ke’s eye and an Eternal Mangekyō. Confronted by Sakura’s Root team, he abandons the attempt to win through individual combat and begins reviving the Ten-Tails inside his dimension 319 320.
He becomes the beast’s jinchūriki, but its incomplete development limits his power. Once the fight reaches Konoha’s ruins, he uses a space-time barrier and escalating Tailed Beast Bombs against the allies. Sasuke and Hashirama counter by sealing the released Ten-Tails and preventing him from reclaiming it 321 325 328.
Obito breaks part of the restraint, regains enough connection to heal, and eventually absorbs the God Tree. He activates Infinite Tsukuyomi, but Sasuke subsequently extracts both the Ten-Tails and God Tree from him 332 338 343.
Amenotokotachi and Final Defeat
Near death, Obito learns that Sasuke returned from thirty years in the future to prevent Shi Mei from destroying the world. His contingency then awakens a Six-Tomoe Rinnegan and Amenotokotachi, overturning his apparent defeat 344.
The restoration makes him more dangerous than before: he kills Kabuto, regains unrestricted Kamui, and deploys Madara’s Limbo against Sasuke and Itachi. Sasuke counters through Samehada’s chakra absorption and commandeered ocular powers, then performs Rinne Rebirth in a way he expects to strip Obito of immortality 345 351 354 357 358.
Rin’s revival undermines Obito’s denial. Sasuke’s Indra’s Arrow drives him into the Valley of the End, where Rin confronts him and he acknowledges his crimes. Obito attempts suicide, but Sasuke stops him and argues that death would be another escape rather than atonement 360 361 362 363.
Confession and Alliance
Obito publicly admits his role in the massacre, the Nine-Tails attack, and the Bloody Mist. He later supplies evidence that the Uchiha rescued 127 villagers during the Nine-Tails attack—an achievement Danzo had erased from the record 367 374.
At the assembly of Daimyo and Kage, he accepts responsibility for initiating Infinite Tsukuyomi and explains that Sasuke adapted the crisis to show the world its previous life. Despite hostility from the Kage, he restrains himself and states that he has come to clean up his own mess 407 408.
He subsequently fights Jigen, helps surround Isshiki, fuses Kamui with his father’s Blade Reversal, and assists Sasuke’s use of Amenotokotachi to survive Ayekashi 416 422 424 425 429 430.
Ōtsutsuki Battles and the Celestial Ninja
While Sasuke fights Naruto, Obito guards against the anticipated arrival of Momoshiki, Kinshiki, and Urashiki. He defeats all three, captures useful eyes, and reveals that his group’s ultimate objective is Shi Mei’s defeat 464 473.
His precisely timed Kamui helps Sasuke suppress the mutated Ten-Tails. The Yachihoko mark left on his hand then activates, forcing him to attack Sasuke and enabling the Ten-Tails’ next move. Māra transfers excess chakra into him, and surviving that infusion produces another enormous power increase 477 478 479 480 486.
Obito later contributes repeatedly replenished chakra to the God Tree, consumes twenty-five Chakra Fruits, and becomes the third-ranked Celestial Ninja. During the Deathmatch Arc, his Great Almsgiving supplies Sasuke with Ten Directions 489 500 505.
Notable Quotes
“What does a temporary victory or defeat amount to? The one who laughs last is the true winner!” 138
“Father, you were a criminal to Konoha, and I am a criminal to the entire Shinobi World...” 424
“Please let me use your eye to witness the road ahead...” 424
“So... I’m here to clean up the mess I made.” 408
“Because Sasuke, myself, and our companions who didn’t join this hunt—all the things we’re doing now and will do in the future have just one ultimate goal: to bring that bastard Shi Mei down.” 473
Trivia
- Tobi has two meanings: It is both Obito’s public Akatsuki identity and the name of a separate companion who speaks to him 30 138.
- Mangetsu’s scroll contains three blades: The detailed passages identify Kabutowari, Exploding Blade Shibuki, and Nuibari as the weapons Obito gives Suigetsu 30 32.
- His later eye arrangement receives an explicit continuity correction: Both of Madara’s Rinnegan were initially placed in the Hashirama face before one was moved into Obito’s left socket. Amenotokotachi restores the left Kamui eye because it judges it superior to a single Rinnegan 346.
- He grew up eating Teuchi and Jing’s rice crackers: He singles them out as personal connections when addressing the revived Uchiha 367.
