Background / History
Senju Heritage and Qingyun’s Apprenticeship
Tsunade belongs to the Senju Clan, which has largely integrated into Konoha. Hiruzen identifies her and Nawaki as the clan’s remaining members and invokes its long feud with the Uchiha when asking her to reconsider her distrust of Qingyun. Her position as a princess of the Land of Fire also grants her unusual freedom to leave Konoha: even Orochimaru and Jiraiya lack the same privilege 12 132.
After learning that Qingyun was expelled from the Uchiha because corrupt clansmen tried to steal his survivor benefits, Tsunade accepts him as her disciple. Orochimaru’s attempt to recruit him prompts her to insist that she found him first. She subsequently offers him a home and refuses Orochimaru’s offers of fifty million and then one hundred million ryō to transfer his apprenticeship, despite her obvious temptation 12 13 14.
Her instruction begins with medical fundamentals, including reviving fish through controlled chakra application. Qingyun’s rapid success astonishes her, but she insists that he make up for the fish killed during practice. After a year of study and a later examination of his knowledge, she sends him to Konoha Hospital to treat wounded shinobi 16 17 19.
Medical Reform and the Second Shinobi World War
Tsunade proposes training enough medical ninja to place one in every squad. Hiruzen rejects the proposal because of the time, knowledge, and expense required; Jiraiya and Orochimaru do not support it either. Dan Katō’s backing helps draw them together, and they become lovers 17.
During the war, Tsunade counters Chiyo’s poisons and repeatedly escorts wounded soldiers home. Chiyo’s development of new mixtures requires her return to the front. When Qingyun serves under her command, she assigns him hospital work rather than accepting Orochimaru’s suggestion that he sabotage Sunagakure’s supply lines, fearing that abrupt exposure to battlefield brutality could change his character 19 41 47 87.
Dan later suffers fatal wounds during the fighting against Hanzō. Tsunade pours healing chakra into him but cannot save him. Before dying, he asks her to care for his orphaned niece, Shizune, and live happily. Qingyun helps Tsunade regain enough composure to preserve Dan’s remains and return to the medical crisis; she nevertheless insists that the injured Qingyun be sent home to recover 93.
Hanzō’s Trap and the Sannin Title
Faulty intelligence draws Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru into an ambush at Swallowfall Gorge. Hanzō is present despite reports to the contrary, and Ibuse’s poison fills the gorge. Qingyun returns to help as the three struggle against Hanzō 100 101.
During the renewed battle, Tsunade and Qingyun jointly treat Jiraiya before the trio confronts Hanzō with their giant summons. Buddha’s Smile Wine prolongs their endurance by restoring chakra, but Hanzō destroys their remaining supply. Once they are exhausted, Jiraiya shields Tsunade from an explosive attack and is gravely wounded. Hanzō defeats and spares the three, naming them the Konoha Sannin—an acknowledgment they experience as humiliating 103 104.
Ōnoki then attacks the fallen trio, prompting Qingyun to intervene. In the aftermath, Tsunade supports returning to Konoha with the wounded because its medical equipment is necessary to develop a serum against Ibuse’s venom 104 112.
Recovery, Research, and Departure
Qingyun investigates Impure World Reincarnation so that Tsunade can see Dan again and confront her unresolved grief. She agrees to accompany him and Shizune outside the village. Their return is followed by a gathering intended to ease the sorrow of parting, and Nawaki later reports that her blood phobia has been cured 124 132 133 135.
Tsunade resumes research and studies the One’s Own Life Reincarnation scroll Qingyun gives her. She works with Orochimaru on possible improvements and eventually returns the completed scroll, remaining concerned about its life-for-life cost. She also avoids Qingyun’s renewed suggestion that she become Hokage 135 146 158.
On New Year’s Day, she announces that she intends to leave Konoha to clear her head and entrusts Shizune to Qingyun. Before her departure, he gives her a Sun-Moon Mark for emergency contact and asks her to write at least twice a month. She is disappointed that he does not ask her to stay, though his precautions show his concern 159.
Homecoming and Life with Qingyun
While away, Tsunade remains uncertain whether her attachment to Qingyun is romantic, but recognizes that she enjoys having him beside her. She maintains her decision to travel, knowing his space-time technique allows him to visit her easily 169 177.
She eventually returns to Konoha, where Qingyun, Kushina, Shion, Shizune, and Nawaki welcome her. News of Orochimaru’s defection arrives soon afterward; Tsunade is less surprised than the others, having long suspected his involvement with Danzō and his dangerous pursuit of immortality 225 226.
Tsunade later helps Kushina care for Shion and the household during Qingyun’s years of seclusion. She also travels extensively with Qingyun, Kushina, and Miroku, including a five-year journey through the shinobi world and technologically advanced western nations 264 275 284.
Ōtsutsuki Expedition
On the moon, Tsunade rushes toward Qingyun when immense lightning strikes his cultivation site, despite Minato and Orochimaru trying to restrain her. Qingyun emerges unharmed and subsequently returns with her to the Shinobi World to explain the celestial phenomenon caused by his transformed Tai Chi Fist 312.
When Ōtsutsuki scouts approach, Tsunade arranges the Flying Fortress for the expedition. Qingyun then gives her the Turtle Pearl, leading to ancestral bloodline purification, Mystic Tortoise transformation, and mastery of two new cultivation arts. She participates in the Pentagram Formation that empowers their companions 314 315 323 324.
During the later ten-year period, many companions explore space or return to the Shinobi World. Tsunade remains on the Ōtsutsuki Planet with Kushina, Miroku, and Konan 329.
Appearance
- Clothing: Returns to Konoha wearing a green cloak over a gray undershirt 225.
- Build: Described as having a voluptuous figure 176.
- Empowered form: Transforms into a black tortoise, subsequently identified as the Mystic Tortoise 323 324.
Personality
Tsunade is affectionate but teasing with Qingyun, habitually ruffling his hair and treating him like a younger brother. Her loyalty outweighs her attraction to money: she refuses to surrender his apprenticeship even for one hundred million ryō. Gambling and drinking remain recurring interests, and casino patrons readily recognize her reputation as the shinobi world’s “legendary sucker” 13 14 16 46 177.
Her protectiveness extends beyond physical safety. She shields Qingyun’s Sharingan secret, helps arrange suitable supervision after graduation, and resists deploying him merely as a powerful combat asset. That concern is reciprocal: after Dan’s death, Qingyun becomes an important source of emotional support 47 48 87 93.
Although initially suspicious of the Uchiha, Tsunade allows Qingyun’s conduct to challenge her assumptions. She also objects to Orochimaru’s attempt to kill the Rain orphans and argues that the children should be heard rather than treated as inevitable enemies 12 109.
Her grief over Dan can overwhelm her, but medical responsibility helps restore her focus. Her later feelings for Qingyun develop less decisively: she acknowledges enjoying his companionship while remaining unsure whether she has fallen in love with him 93 169.

- Despite Qingyun’s encouragement, she avoids pursuing the Hokage position 158.
