Background / History
Clan life and Qingyun’s expulsion
Clan membership does not guarantee protection for weaker members. Qingyun’s parents are ordinary chunin who never awakened the Sharingan. After Kirigakure ninja kill them, neighbors help with their burial, but Qingyun becomes increasingly isolated. Uchiha Ichigo embezzles part of his survivor benefits and eventually expels him without the leadership’s authorization 1 34.
Yungang and Yunshan continue harassing Qingyun at the Academy, claiming that his presence damages the Uchiha’s reputation. Qingyun defeats them and declares that he has left the clan. His treatment becomes the main reason he rejects later demands to return 4 6 34.
Attempts to reclaim Qingyun
The leadership discovers Qingyun’s origins only after his medical skills and unusual combat techniques attract attention. It punishes Ichigo and sends Fugaku to retrieve him, but Fugaku’s commanding manner escalates the encounter into a fight 34 38.
The elders then debate reconciliation and assassination. The approved approach offers resources, ninjutsu, and a classmate who might befriend Qingyun. Mikoto transfers into his class, while Fugaku arranges apologies from Yungang and Yunshan. Later, Tennai gives Qingyun a scroll containing forbidden techniques and Sharingan methods, hoping to draw him back by creating distrust between him and the Hokage 38 40 142.
Root’s rebellion
When Root’s crimes are exposed, the clan confronts Danzo over his possession of Uchiha eyes. During the ensuing rebellion, Hawk Faction members urge the leadership to seize power, while the Dove Faction advocates helping the Hokage 153 154.
Tennai’s recognition of Qingyun’s unusual Mangekyō changes the clan head’s priorities. He orders every Uchiha of chunin rank or higher to suppress Root, then demands renewed efforts to bring Qingyun back, even if the clan must meet all his conditions 155.
Third Shinobi World War
Hiruzen, acting through Homura, privately promises the Uchiha and Hyuga new elder positions in exchange for confronting Kirigakure. The promises are deliberately made in a form that can later be withdrawn. When the clans request help, Hiruzen sends supplies but delays reinforcements to further weaken their core forces 204.
The coastal battlefield favors the Yuki and Hozuki clans’ Water Release, reducing the predominantly fire-specialized Uchiha’s fighting strength by twenty percent. Shisui defeats four elite jonin, but individual victories cannot prevent mounting casualties. By Minato’s arrival, three of the Uchiha’s five elders—including Tennai—have died, and the clan head is near death 203 211.
Qingyun’s intervention transforms many surviving clansmen’s resentment toward him into admiration. Nevertheless, the losses leave numerous Military Police posts vacant, exposing the clan to political pressure. Newly awakened Sharingan and supplies from Hiruzen provide a basis for recovery 212 218.
Reform and Shisui’s succession
Fugaku’s Prophecy shows a possible massacre eight years in the future, involving Itachi, Root operatives, and a mysterious spatial-dōjutsu user. The vision conflicts with the altered present, prompting Fugaku to consult Qingyun rather than treat it as certain 218 219.
Qingyun conditions his acceptance of Itachi as a disciple on Fugaku eliminating the Hawk Faction and eventually transferring leadership to Shisui. Fugaku accepts the warning against a coup. By the later war against Akatsuki, he has wiped out the faction, and Shisui has succeeded him without opposition 219 220 227 300.
Under Shisui, the clan contributes 3,000 ninja to Minato’s allied army. Its leading fighters later participate in interstellar campaigns; Shisui helps defeat the Ōtsutsuki Main Family’s experts, while he and Itachi ultimately establish families in Konoha 300 327 329.
Organization
| Group / Institution | Function and position |
|---|---|
| Clan head | Holds final authority over policy, including recruitment, mobilization, and succession 38 155 300. |
| Elder council | Advises the clan head; its members can strongly influence decisions but disagree over relations with Konoha and Qingyun 37 38. |
| Hawk Faction | Advocates aggressive action against Konoha’s leadership; attempts to exploit Root’s rebellion and the prospect of powerful Mangekyō users. Later eliminated by Fugaku 154 227 300. |
| Dove Faction | Favors cooperation during Root’s rebellion rather than an opportunistic seizure of power 154. |
| Military Police Force | Described as the clan’s institutional heart. Fugaku’s appointment as a squad captain helps prepare him for clan leadership 146. |
- Leadership gatherings take place semiannually in the compound’s Ancestral Hall 37.
- The leadership conceals Qingyun’s mistreatment and Ichigo’s punishment, leaving many ordinary members unaware of why Qingyun departed 142.
- Clan authority extends to wartime service: Shisui must join the Uchiha front after his regular team temporarily disbands 203.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
- Bloodline basis: An ocular kekkei genkai associated with inherited Yin Release 14.
- Awakening: Severe grief can cause dark chakra to form in an Uchiha’s brain and awaken the eyes, but witnessing a loved one’s death is not the only method 46 323.
- Applications: Dynamic vision, insight, hypnosis, and copying. Possessing the eyes does not automatically confer mastery of every function 27 59.
- Not universal: Qingyun’s parents never awakened theirs despite serving as chunin 1.
Mangekyō and Higher Ocular Forms
- Individual techniques: Fugaku gains Prophecy and Soul Reaping; Obito uses Kamui; Qingyun develops unusual solar and lunar abilities 150 218 237.
- Susanoo: Demonstrated by Qingyun, Shisui, and Sasuke, with Qingyun attaining its Perfect form 193 237 321.
- Limits: Fugaku’s deliberate ten-year prophecy can be used at most twice in his lifetime; Soul Reaping has a twenty-year interval 218.
- Ocular strain: Shisui nearly loses his sight while attempting to free the Nine-Tails from Obito’s control 237.
- Exceptional evolution: Qingyun obtains Eternal Mangekyō without transplanting a brother’s eyes; Shisui and Itachi later gain Rinnegan through bloodline purification 193 324.
Fire Release and Swordsmanship
- Most Uchiha ninja specialize in Fire Release, making water-favored terrain a significant disadvantage 203.
- Fugaku combines fire techniques with shadow clones, kunai, and wire 34.
- Shisui’s Uchiha Style: Flame Leaping Sword channels flames through sword attacks and can be combined with Dragon Fire Technique 203.
- Madara continues using the Great Fireball Technique even against Ōtsutsuki Main Family opponents 326.
Clan Knowledge
- The clan preserves Sharingan instruction and forbidden techniques in scrolls; Tennai uses access to this knowledge as an inducement for Qingyun’s return 142.
- Its stone tablet is not a reliable historical authority: Qingyun reveals that Black Zetsu altered it to manipulate Madara 297.
