Ch. 1The Lie-Flat Slacker System
Plot points and events
- In Year 50 of the Hidden Leaf calendar, fifth-year Academy students are abruptly graduated to genin because the Third Shinobi World War has left Konoha short of personnel.
- Jin Uchiha, a twelve-year-old transmigrant, is among them. He resents being sent to the front and reflects on his precarious position: his parents, once associated with Kagami Uchiha, were rejected by both the Hokage’s faction and Uchiha hardliners, then died on a mission.
- Jin has a substantial inheritance, strong abilities, and a three-tomoe Sharingan. He has mastered basic techniques and several Fire Release jutsu, but has kept his strength hidden.
- Expecting the Uchiha clan to be destroyed in the future, Jin plans to avoid involvement, grow stronger quietly, and flee on the night of the massacre rather than try to save the clan.
- As the graduation ceremony proceeds, Jin’s long-awaited system appears. The Lie-Flat Slacker System promises automatic rewards when he rests, with the rule: lie down rather than sit, and sit rather than stand.
- Its starter pack is the Six Powers Training Method. The system explains that ninjutsu and chakra will gain experience automatically when Jin is “lying flat,” but offers no missions and refuses further explanation.
Character developments and interactions
- Jin begins as cynical, wary, and focused on survival. The system’s arrival brings him hope, though its vague, lazy nature immediately frustrates him. He is eager to exploit its benefits without yet knowing how to do so safely.
- Sarutobi Daio announces the students’ promotion and invokes the Will of Fire, embodying Konoha’s wartime need for more shinobi.
- Jin’s thoughts reveal his contempt for Hiruzen Sarutobi and Fugaku Uchiha, whom he blames for the village’s desperation and the clan’s looming downfall. He also compares his abilities favorably with Kakashi, recently promoted to jonin.
- Jin tries to question the system about a starter pack and missions; the system responds tersely, gives him the training method, and withdraws.
Significant themes
- Survival over duty: Jin rejects patriotic ideals and clan loyalty in favor of staying alive.
- Alienation and distrust: His background leaves him accepted by neither the Uchiha nor the Hokage’s faction.
- War’s human cost: Young students are rushed into service as the village faces attacks from multiple hidden villages.
- Power and self-preservation: Jin’s hidden strength and future knowledge offer advantages, but he must conceal them in a dangerous political world.
- Comic contrast: The system’s absurdly lazy attitude clashes with the urgency and violence of the shinobi world.
