Ch. 381Battling Hanzō
Key plot points and events
- Hanzō challenges Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade to knock him off his summon, Ibuse; if they succeed, the conflict between Amegakure and Konoha ends.
- Tsunade uses a giant, flame-propelled Steel Fist made by Orochimaru to send Ibuse flying and knock Hanzō into a crater. Hanzō refuses to accept defeat and resumes fighting.
- When Ibuse releases poison mist, Orochimaru counters it with a scroll-summoned hair dryer powered by a portable battery.
- Hanzō attacks Orochimaru, but a summoned Mecha blocks him. Orochimaru then uses a Gatling gun and mortar from his storage scroll to pin Hanzō down while Jiraiya prepares Sage Mode.
- After Orochimaru runs out of ammunition, Hanzō destroys the Mecha. Jiraiya completes Sage Mode, but Tsunade and Orochimaru mock his appearance. The chapter ends as the Toad Sages urge Jiraiya to finish the fight so they can return to their livestream sales.
Character developments and interactions
- Tsunade proves her strength and confidence, readily using Orochimaru’s technology; Jiraiya and Orochimaru are wary of her power.
- Orochimaru is relaxed and resourceful, revealing that his scroll contains thousands of stored items. His modern weapons and gadgets turn the battle into an absurdly uneven contest.
- Jiraiya boasts at first but ultimately relies on his teammates’ efforts while preparing Sage Mode. His appearance becomes the target of friendly ridicule.
- Hanzō begins arrogantly, then grows frustrated and humiliated as the trio repeatedly counter him. His refusal to honor the apparent loss prolongs the fight.
- The teammates banter throughout: Jiraiya complains about Orochimaru arming Tsunade, while Orochimaru and Tsunade unite to tease Jiraiya. The Toad Sages add comic impatience and bickering of their own.
Significant themes
- Subverting expectations: A legendary shinobi battle is disrupted by hair dryers, firearms, mecha, and livestream commerce.
- Teamwork and ingenuity: The trio’s complementary strength, technology, and skills keep Hanzō under pressure.
- Pride versus adaptability: Hanzō’s concern with saving face contrasts with the protagonists’ casual, flexible approach.
- Comedic camaraderie: Teasing among allies and the Toad Sages’ everyday concerns undercut the battle’s seriousness.
