Background / History

Sasuke is born after the Third Shinobi World War to Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha. His older brother is outwardly Itachi, but actually the reincarnated Madara. Recognizing the infant as the Sasuke who opposed him and helped save the world in his previous life, Madara also notices his resemblance to Izuna. He resolves to protect Sasuke while considering how to raise him into a powerful ally 10.

As an infant, Sasuke responds especially warmly to his brother. During the Nine-Tails’ attack, Madara carries him toward shelter while Fugaku performs the civilian-protection duties assigned to the Uchiha 11.

His early training takes place under Madara, who also asks Shisui to look after and teach him. At three, Sasuke welcomes the recently bereaved Neji with candy and an invitation to spar; their first matches establish Sasuke’s exceptional throwing accuracy 15 31 32 58.

Naruto becomes a frequent companion after Mikoto welcomes him into the family home. The boys train together, with Sasuke initially setting the pace. Both later attend the Academy and graduate into Team 7 alongside Sakura, with Madara serving as their jōnin instructor 81 86 88 111 114.

Appearance

  • Resemblance to Izuna: Both the reborn Madara and Edo Madara notice that Sasuke’s face closely resembles Madara’s younger brother 10 293.
  • Exceptional good looks: Described as more handsome than Itachi in childhood; Ino is immediately captivated when they meet 13 94.
  • Mangekyō pattern: His original Mangekyō Sharingan has a six-pointed-star design 192.
  • Later ocular evolution: Receives Itachi’s eyes for his Eternal Mangekyō and subsequently develops Rinnegan in both eyes 238 263 294.

Personality

Sasuke grows up affectionate, lively, and generous. He eagerly cheers his brother during training, offers Neji candy, helps Naruto at dinner, returns Ino’s ball, and joins clan members helping an elderly villager push her cart. By his Academy graduation, he is normally aloof around classmates but still smiles openly at his brother 31 58 86 94 95 114.

His attachment to his companions does not prevent him from acting calmly under pressure. Against Orochimaru, he shields Naruto, directs Sakura to care for him, and continues fighting despite exhaustion. As a captain, he steadies Naruto after Gaara’s death and assigns opponents while ensuring Naruto has Kakashi’s support 130 199.

Killing Ranmaru troubles him enough to seek his brother’s judgment. He subsequently decides that he wants neither to compete with Naruto for the Hokage position nor spend his life as another person’s subordinate. Madara’s vision of a world where children no longer have to fight gives him a purpose of his own, though he admits he does not yet understand every sacrifice it may demand 194.

His later confidence can become openly contemptuous toward enemies such as Obito. Nevertheless, he exercises personal restraint: he refrains from permanently sealing the reanimated Minato out of consideration for Naruto. He also comes to regard overwhelming strength as a deterrent against conflict between villages 202 262 263.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Sasuke uses ocular perception to read opponents, identify concealed threats, and disrupt an enemy’s mind 130 135 200 262.

  • His two-tomoe Sharingan makes Orochimaru’s movements easier to follow and exposes the face hidden beneath his apparent one 130.
  • Reads Aka Tō’s chakra and movements before swiftly defeating him in the Chūnin Exam preliminaries 135.
  • Identifies Sasori’s outer body as a puppet with its operator concealed inside 200.
  • His Eternal Mangekyō detects the spatial fluctuations preceding Obito’s materialization, allowing him to attack during Kamui’s vulnerable moments 259 262.
  • Nearly overwhelms Obito mentally with ocular power; Tobi’s intervention prevents Obito from falling into an illusion 262.

Mangekyō Sharingan and Amaterasu

His Mangekyō improves combat perception and produces black flames capable of forcing powerful opponents to abandon their bodies or disguises 193 263.

  • Uses Amaterasu against Ranmaru, who escapes an initial attack by separating from his transformed wolf body and evades another with a Water Clone 193.
  • Burns Tobi after piercing him with Futsu-no-Mitama 262.
  • Combines black flames with blue lightning into a black Chidori against Obito 263.
  • Repeated full-power use strains his body and mind. Helping Naruto restrain the unsealed Nine-Tails severely damages his eyesight before the transplant 232 238.

Rinnegan and Space-Time Ninjutsu

Sasuke’s Rinnegan extends his perception beyond ordinary space and supports spatial displacement 263 294.

  • Sees Obito’s body hidden through Kamui and lands attacks across the spatial divide 263.
  • Uses Amenotejikara to reposition himself and opponents during Susanoo combat 294.
  • Arrives at the Mountainous Cemetery through a black-hole-like opening 302.
  • Develops his Rinnegan himself; it is not transplanted from Madara, nor granted by the Sage of Six Paths in the documented events 293 302.

Susanoo

His purple Susanoo provides protection against large-scale attacks and eventually reaches its Perfect form 262 263.

  • Blocks Tobi’s attacking trees without requiring Sasuke to move 262.
  • Shatters half of Edo Madara’s meteor while Naruto destroys the other half 246.
  • Wields the Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade, giving him a major equipment advantage against Edo Madara 263 294.
  • Seals Black Zetsu with the Totsuka Blade 294.

Fire Release

Sasuke employs fire techniques for direct attacks, wire-guided assaults, and clearing groups of enemies 130 203.

  • Great Fireball Technique: Used against Orochimaru and later overpowers Obito’s own Great Fireball 130 262.
  • Dragon Fire Technique: Follows a shuriken-wire trap against Orochimaru 130.
  • Dragon Flame Song Technique: Produces four enormous fire dragons. At twelve, using it with his remaining chakra leaves him depleted; Orochimaru blocks it with an exceptionally large Earth-Style Wall 130 131.
  • Majestic Destroyer Flame: Clears attacking puppets and burns away Tobi’s trees 203 262.
  • Sends explosive Fire Release chakra along Chidori Sharp Spear to destroy the Third Kazekage puppet 202.

Lightning Release and Swordsmanship

Sasuke’s lightning affinity complements his sword and supports both close-range strikes and ranged piercing attacks 170 202.

  • Channels lightning chakra through Futsu-no-Mitama, producing golden-blue light and projected lightning sword aura 170.
  • Uses Chidori Sharp Spear against Ranmaru, the Third Kazekage puppet, and Obito’s materializing arm 193 202 262.
  • Activates Lightning Release Chakra Mode intermittently for speed, then at full power when intercepting attacks aimed at his companions 202.
  • Uses a black-flame-enhanced Chidori to wound Obito despite his intangibility 263.

Body Flicker and Taijutsu

His physical speed and movement techniques let him evade attacks and exploit openings detected by his eyes 141 202 261.

  • His taijutsu is among the few styles capable of matching Neji’s during the Chūnin Exams 141.
  • Shisui teaches him a Body Flicker technique that creates confusing afterimages and enables attacks from behind 202.
  • After obtaining the Eternal Mangekyō, his speed rivals Naruto’s Golden Body Mode without Flying Thunder God 261.

Shuriken, Wires, and Shadow Clones

Sasuke combines highly accurate throwing with restraints, retrieval, and efficient use of clones 58 116 199.

  • Repeatedly defeats Neji with practice shuriken as a small child 58.
  • Binds Aka Tō with shuriken wire and retrieves Gaara’s body from Sasori’s reach using wires 135 199.
  • Repels puppet ambushes with shuriken while simultaneously exchanging ninjutsu with Sasori 203.
  • Sends a Shadow Clone on routine missions without Naruto or Sakura recognizing the substitution 116.

Hashirama Cell Enhancement

Madara administers improved Hashirama cells during Sasuke’s eye transplant 238.

  • Sasuke accepts them almost instantly, and they later fuse completely with his own cells 238 262.
  • The procedure provides a means of repairing Mangekyō-related damage alongside his acquisition of the Eternal Mangekyō 238.
  • Initially senses the added power without understanding its source; later recognizes a similar attraction in Tobi’s chakra 238 262.

Leadership and Tactical Judgment

Sasuke develops from a talented trainee into an independent commander trusted with major operations 194 196 295.

  • Receives command of Karin, Neji, and Jūgo, together with resources recovered from Orochimaru’s hideout 194.
  • Captains the reformed Team 7 on Gaara’s rescue mission 196.
  • Calms Naruto, briefs the team on the enemies, and divides the group while assigning Kakashi as Naruto’s backup 199.
  • Uses misleading answers to draw information from Edo Madara and Black Zetsu about the Demonic Statue and Eye of the Moon Plan 293.
  • Coordinates spatial attacks with Hokage Madara against Hashirama and Edo Madara 294.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Futsu-no-Mitama — Renowned sword originally given to Madara by Shinhiko Kōzuki, then passed to Sasuke. Its compatibility with Lightning Release enhances its cutting power and allows projected lightning attacks 170 200 201.
  • Yata Mirror — Shield carried by his Perfect Susanoo. Described as defending against all physical attacks; also reflects Edo Madara’s flames 263 294.
  • Totsuka Blade — Susanoo weapon that seals a pierced opponent’s soul permanently in the Drunken Dream. Sasuke uses it on Black Zetsu, though it cannot seal chakra itself 263 294.
  • Shuriken and wire — Used for precision attacks, binding opponents, and retrieving bodies 130 135 199.
  • Wooden practice weapons — Hayato supplies handmade wooden shuriken and kunai for his childhood match with Neji 58.
  • Wooden puppet — A childhood gift brought home by his brother from the Land of Wind 94.

Relationships

  • Itachi Uchiha / reborn Madara — Older brother, principal mentor, and ideological model. Sasuke idolizes him, accepts his peace ideal, and promises to protect him with the eyes he receives. Madara’s care also includes deliberately allowing dangerous encounters to shape Sasuke’s development 10 131 192 194 238.
  • Fugaku Uchiha — Father and Uchiha clan leader, who names him Sasuke 10.
  • Mikoto Uchiha — Mother; her affectionate household shapes his childhood and welcomes Naruto into their family life 81 86 94.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Childhood friend, training partner, teammate, and rival. Their loyalty is mutual: Sasuke takes an injury to protect Naruto, while threats against Sasuke provoke Naruto’s anger. Their competition later becomes grounded in respect 88 130 164 165 199 214.
  • Neji Hyuga — Childhood sparring partner and brother-like friend. Believing Neji has died protecting him triggers Sasuke’s Mangekyō awakening; Neji survives and later serves under his command 58 192 193 194.
  • Shisui Uchiha — Mentor and protector who teaches him advanced Body Flicker. Attempts to intervene during Ranmaru’s attack but is obstructed by Orochimaru’s snakes 15 192 202.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Lightning Release teacher and later teammate on the reformed Team 7 140 196.
  • Sakura Haruno — Teammate who is attracted to him and assists during dangerous encounters. Sasuke protects her during the fights against Orochimaru and Sasori 114 130 131 202.
  • Karin — Companion and later subordinate. Restores his chakra through a bite and helps save Neji 192 193 194.
  • Jūgo — Companion and later subordinate who shields Sasuke from a potentially fatal attack and regenerates Neji’s damaged organs 192 193 194.
  • Orochimaru — Initially seeks to recruit or possess him; Sasuke rejects his promises of power. Their later interactions remain wary despite Orochimaru’s cooperation with Madara 131 165 181 302.
  • Gaara — Opponent during the Chūnin Exam crisis and in a later public challenge; subsequently a rescued ally and partner in operations in the Land of Earth 150 196 278 295.
  • Ino Yamanaka — Becomes captivated by him during their childhood meeting 94.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Team 7 and the Chūnin Exams

  • Joins Naruto and Sakura under his brother’s instruction. The team passes its initial test by attacking together, rather than by successfully taking the bells 114 116.
