Background / History
Departure from Konoha
Orochimaru was a student of Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage. According to Kazuhiko Sarutobi’s information, Hiruzen expelled him after discovering that he had conducted human experiments on people from Konoha. He subsequently operated as a rogue ninja 27 28.
In the Land of Rice Fields, Orochimaru encountered Kazuhiko’s escort team while eliminating bandits displaced by the Third Shinobi World War. Madara inferred that he was clearing these threats to gain the daimyo’s trust and secure resources for a stable research base. Orochimaru overwhelmed most of the group with killing intent but let them leave, asking Kazuhiko to convey his regards to the Hokage 27 28.
Chūnin Exams and Sasuke
Orochimaru infiltrated the Forest of Death using a female Kusagakure ninja’s stolen face. His immediate objective was to assess Sasuke Uchiha as a possible vessel for Living Corpse Reincarnation. He preferred the body of Sasuke’s older brother—Madara reborn as Uchiha Itachi—but considered the older Uchiha’s strength and position obstacles to obtaining it 129.
Naruto and Sasuke destroyed his summoned python and coordinated several attacks against him. Orochimaru remained in control, suppressed Naruto’s Nine-Tails chakra with the Five Elements Seal, and blocked Sasuke’s Dragon Flame Song with an Earth-Style Wall. He then offered Sasuke enough power to surpass his brother 129 130 131.
Sasuke rejected him. When Orochimaru extended his neck to bite Sasuke, Madara intervened and reversed the recruitment offer: Orochimaru could return to Konoha and serve under him. Orochimaru refused, but withdrew rather than risk a confrontation involving Madara, Anko, and ANBU that could derail his larger plans 131. He later attended the preliminaries disguised as an Otogakure supervisor, still considering Sasuke a promising Cursed Seal recipient 135.
Konoha Crush and Forced Recruitment
Before the exams began, Orochimaru killed the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, and assumed his identity for the joint Sound–Sand invasion. Konoha discovered the plot in advance and prepared its defenses 145 157.
Inside the Four Violet Flames Formation, Hiruzen confronted his former student alone. Orochimaru underestimated his teacher’s remaining strength and was driven onto the defensive despite wielding the Kusanagi Sword. He escaped the immediate assault with his shedding-like substitution technique, then summoned Hashirama and Tobirama through Impure World Reincarnation 145 146.
Hiruzen ultimately used the Reaper Death Seal to seal the revived Hokage and remove Orochimaru’s ability to use his hands, dying in the process. Orochimaru fled with the Sound Four, only for Madara to ambush and kill his escorts 152 153.
Madara offered to spare him in exchange for Hashirama cells and cooperation. Orochimaru resisted until Madara revealed that his intelligence network had located key research bases and threatened both his life and decades of work. He submitted, received a temporary Cursed Seal around his heart, and was ordered to supply untampered cells within three days. Madara did not require him to return publicly to Konoha 153 154.
Recovery and Cooperation with the Fifth Hokage
While dependent on Kabuto for treatment and assistance, Orochimaru followed reports of Itachi’s rule with growing interest. Konoha’s domination of Sunagakure and abolition of the Hyūga Caged Bird Seal convinced him that the promised new order was taking shape 159 162.
He sought Tsunade’s help to restore his arms, offering to revive Dan and Nawaki. The negotiations became a battle involving Jiraiya and Naruto. Orochimaru provoked Naruto by threatening to take Sasuke’s or Itachi’s body, but eventually withdrew after learning that Itachi wanted Tsunade to return as Konoha’s Medical Department Director 162 163 165.
Madara later supplied a demon mask and instructions for undoing the Reaper Death Seal. Orochimaru restored his hands and released Hiruzen’s soul from the Death God’s stomach. By their next meeting, he had also removed Madara’s Cursed Seal, although another overwhelming chakra display persuaded him that resistance remained futile 171 180 181.
Their cooperation became increasingly practical. Orochimaru prepared secret bases as training grounds for Sasuke and Neji, supplied elemental techniques, shared his research on Jūgo, and accepted covert assignments involving the Bounty Exchange Office and the Mountainous Cemetery. He explicitly promised to stop coveting Sasuke’s body 181 186. He later observed Sasuke’s victory over Ranmaru and departed after the battle 193.
Akatsuki and the War Scheme
Under Hokage Madara’s direction, Orochimaru supplied Akatsuki with intelligence and resources over three years, accelerating its development and tailed-beast operations. He participated in tailed-beast sealing as an independent partner rather than a subordinate of Pain or Obito 201 219.
After Nagato’s defection disrupted Akatsuki’s plans, Kabuto approached Obito on Orochimaru’s behalf and revealed a reanimated Madara Uchiha. This Edo Madara was distinct from the living Madara occupying Itachi’s body. Kabuto offered support in exchange for defeating Itachi and Sasuke, while Orochimaru continued working toward the Fifth Hokage’s larger scheme 237 241 250.
Orochimaru and Kabuto assembled reanimated fighters and roughly a thousand powerful shinobi created with Hashirama cells. Orochimaru separately revived Hashirama, Tobirama, and Minato, strengthening his control over them at the cost of some of their power. Hiruzen was not included among these summons 248 249 250.
He then used the revived leaders to destabilize national governments. Tobirama killed selected officials in the Land of Water, while Minato transported Gengetsu into the Land of Fire’s capital. Kabuto disguised Gengetsu as Mei Terumi to misdirect blame. The operation damaged administration, interrupted military supplies, and deepened distrust between nations and their ninja villages 254.
As Obito’s leverage declined, Orochimaru openly asserted that he and Edo Madara controlled the group. He also steered its attention toward the Lands of Lightning and Earth rather than confronting the combined strength gathering around Konoha 257 282. During the campaign, he watched Edo Madara attack Iwagakure’s army from a mountain 288.
The Fifth Hokage’s Final Operation
At Orochimaru’s underground base, he and Kabuto feared that Hokage Madara might dispose of them once their usefulness ended. Madara assured them otherwise and restated his goal of unifying the shinobi world into one nation and creating a world without ninja. Their desire to witness that future helped secure their continued cooperation 295.
When Naruto and Sasuke arrived at the Mountainous Cemetery, Orochimaru and Kabuto presented themselves as coerced Akatsuki collaborators who had been helping the Hokage. They urged the brothers not to interrupt Madara’s confrontation with the Ten-Tails. Madara intended to retain their scientific abilities and secure their acceptance by the younger leaders 302.
Appearance
Orochimaru appears to be in his thirties when first encountered, although he had known Kazuhiko since the latter was a teenager 27.
- Deathly pale skin, long loose hair, and purple eyeshadow 27.
- Golden eyes with vertical, snake-like pupils and a cold, penetrating gaze 27.
- White clothing during the Land of Rice Fields encounter 27.
- Disguised appearances include a female Kusagakure ninja, an Otogakure supervisor, and the Fourth Kazekage 129 135 145.
Personality
Orochimaru is fascinated by exceptional talent and treats promising shinobi as potential research material or future bodies. Sasuke’s resistance, Sharingan development, and increasingly powerful attacks excite him rather than immediately alarm him. He prolongs their encounter to examine that potential 129 130 131.
His cruelty is often calculated. He exploits Tsunade’s grief with promises of resurrection and deliberately inflames Naruto’s fear for the Uchiha brothers. During the war scheme, he takes pleasure in using controlled former leaders to kill officials and create political suspicion 162 165 254.
Self-preservation and the protection of his research can override his pride. He retreats when a fight threatens larger plans and submits when Madara demonstrates that neither escape nor the survival of his facilities is assured 131 154.
His political interests extend beyond destruction. The Konoha Crush is described as an attempt to seize power, not merely an expression of personal grudges or enthusiasm for war. He questions idealistic promises without credible methods, but becomes genuinely interested in Madara’s plan to build lasting power through capable allies and institutions 153 181.
Abilities & Skills
Living Corpse Reincarnation
A forbidden technique Orochimaru developed to pursue immortality by taking over other people’s bodies 129.
- A vessel’s potential determines the ceiling of his future strength 129.
- His desired vessels include Itachi and Sasuke; the older brother’s power makes direct acquisition especially dangerous 129.
- He believes changing bodies could circumvent Madara’s heart-bound Cursed Seal, though the passage presents this as his intended workaround rather than a demonstrated escape 154.
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru develops and improves Tobirama’s resurrection technique, turning deceased shinobi into controllable combatants 146 154 250.
- Summons Hashirama and Tobirama against Hiruzen during the Konoha Crush 146.
- Later revives Hashirama, Tobirama, and Minato for the war operation 249 250.
- Uses control talismans and direct control to compel actions while summoned individuals can retain awareness and protest 146 250 254.
- Stronger control can require reducing a summon’s available strength 250.
- Hashirama’s power remains a concern even under the revised control arrangement 250.
Scientific Research and Cursed Seals
His research combines human experimentation, cellular cultivation, and combat enhancement 27 153 186.
- Successfully cultivates Hashirama cells and produces a shinobi capable of Wood Release 153.
- Studies Jūgo and develops a Cursed Seal that helps ninja absorb nature energy 186.
- Creates altered test subjects with enhanced durability and wound recovery, including a half-human, half-tiger subject 175.
- Works with Kabuto on roughly a thousand powerful Hashirama-cell-enhanced shinobi 248.
- Helps Hokage Madara and Kabuto develop improved Hashirama cells that fuse successfully with Sasuke’s body 262.
- Supplies information about sage-power instruction at Ryūchi Cave; this does not establish that Orochimaru himself has mastered Sage Mode 186.
Snake Techniques and Body Manipulation
His combat style uses serpents and unnatural bodily extensions 129 130 131.
- Summons giant pythons for transport, ambushes, and attacks 27 129.
- Extends his tongue to restrain, lift, and throw opponents 130.
- Stretches his neck to attempt a bite on Sasuke 131.
- Releases masses of pythons and venomous snakes from his mouth 165.
- Uses Kabuto’s assistance to complete hand seals while his own hands are disabled 165.
Defense, Sealing, and Mobility

- Cooperates with Akatsuki while monitoring and countering its attempts to spy on his faction 237.
- Uses controlled Kage, targeted assassinations, and false identities to undermine interstate alliances 254 256.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — used to block Hiruzen’s Adamantine Staff during their rooftop battle 145.
- Human Skin Mask — disguises him during infiltration; Sasuke’s flames partially expose the face beneath it 131 145.

Trivia
- Orochimaru’s bounty decreased after he left Konoha, a detail he finds amusing when discussing the Bounty Exchange Office 181.
- Madara’s recruitment seal was intended as a short-term safeguard for receiving untampered Hashirama cells, not as permanent control over Orochimaru 154.
- Although he releases Hiruzen’s soul while restoring his hands, Hiruzen is absent from the later group of revived Hokage 181 249.
- Madara values his scientific and organizational abilities enough to preserve him after the war scheme and seek his acceptance by Naruto and Sasuke 295 302.
