Background / History
Founding of Konoha
The Uchiha and Senju fought one another before the village’s founding. Despite losing his younger brother Izuna to Tobirama Senju, Madara accepted Hashirama’s appeal to end their conflict and helped establish Konoha. He later attributed his departure to the village’s failure to deliver lasting peace and its continued distrust of the Uchiha, rather than simply to grief over Izuna 251.
The Kōzuki family supported the Uchiha during Madara’s time as clan leader. When Madara and Hashirama founded Konoha, the family also helped establish the Land of Fire and became one of the village’s backers 61.
Police Authority and Isolation
Tobirama placed the Uchiha in charge of Konoha’s Military Police Force. The position used their Sharingan and combat abilities, but also made other clans wary of them and restricted their access to the village’s central leadership. Their separation from the wider population strengthened identification with the clan over the village 3.
Most adult Uchiha formed teams with other Uchiha, unlike the cross-clan teams common elsewhere in Konoha. Madara regarded this insularity, combined with claims of bloodline superiority, as a major source of the clan’s alienation 8.
During the Third Shinobi World War, the clan suffered repeated casualties. Fugaku coordinated its deployments, while members including Shisui fought at the front. Fugaku also took four-year-old Itachi—whose body housed the reborn Madara—to the battlefield, hoping his development would eventually improve the clan’s standing 5 6.
Nine-Tails Attack and Relocation
During the Nine-Tails’ attack, Konoha’s leadership ordered the Uchiha to protect civilians rather than fight the beast. Madara recognized the Sharingan in its eyes and identified Obito as the likely attacker, while anticipating that the village would blame the clan collectively 11.
Afterward, Danzō’s plan moved the clan to a barren site on Konoha’s outskirts. Madara identified nearby observation towers and surrounding clan positions as features that could turn the settlement into a trap. Fugaku kept this assessment secret to avoid provoking a confrontation 12.
Hardliners considered rebellion, a sudden strike against Konoha’s leadership, or departure from the village. Madara challenged their lack of plans for securing recognition from other clans, surviving retaliation, or governing afterward. He instead arranged direct communication between Fugaku and Hiruzen, reducing their dependence on Root-controlled information 51 52 53.
Reconciliation and Reform
Shinhiko Kōzuki’s offer of protection gave the Hardliners another possible destination outside Konoha. Madara refused to lead the clan into his service and exposed the uncertainty behind both their rebellion and relocation plans. He then revealed his Mangekyō Sharingan and warned that he would protect clan members who opposed rebellion, even if they became a minority 64 82 83 84.
Hiruzen subsequently increased resources for the clan, apologized publicly for its relocation, and offered to move it back. The Uchiha accepted reconciliation without another full relocation. Madara proposed restoring their influence by placing the Police Force headquarters in central Konoha and assigning them security duties in the village’s core 86.
The new headquarters was completed, and Fugaku instructed officers to help villagers with ordinary problems as well as crimes. Nobuo and Itsuki’s assistance to an elderly vendor illustrates the shift from an intimidating police presence toward everyday public service 95.
After Danzō lost authority, Fugaku and the clan helped Madara take over Root. Rather than preserve its brainwashed personnel as a private power base, Madara secured approval to end its abusive training and integrate its children into Konoha’s ordinary shinobi system. He also requested permission to recruit non-Uchiha into the Police Force 109.
An Uchiha Hokage
By the time Obito returned to exploit the supposed clan–village conflict, Root no longer existed and the Uchiha were on good terms with Konoha. His information was outdated or deliberately falsified 111.
The clan later received responsibility for Chūnin Exam security. During the Hokage succession vote, Ajin spoke for the Uchiha in support of Itachi, with Fugaku’s approval. Itachi subsequently became Fifth Hokage, fulfilling his earlier ambition to become the clan’s first holder of the office 17 127 154 169.
Organization and Internal Politics
| Group / Position | Role and Outlook |
|---|---|
| Clan leadership | Fugaku seeks stability and cooperation while remaining responsible for every clan member. He initially entertains a sudden coup, but accepts direct talks with Hiruzen and later supports institutional reform 8 52 109. |
| Bloodline Faction | Members such as Aren claim Uchiha superiority over other clans. Their attitudes are influential among the younger generation and deepen outside resentment 8. |
| Hardliners | Resent unequal treatment and consider rebellion or leaving Konoha. Ajin, Kaede, and Nobuo are identified with this tendency, though their responses change as Madara gains authority and reconciliation progresses 54 83 86 95. |
| Younger followers of Itachi | Nobuo, Itsuki, and Moku accept him as their leader after losing contests in combat, shuriken throwing, ninjutsu, and genjutsu. They spread his reputation among their peers 30 31 32. |
| Military Police Force | The clan’s principal public institution; later adopts community assistance duties and becomes the subject of a proposal to admit non-Uchiha recruits 95 109. |
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan’s defining ocular ability, supporting perception, copied techniques, and genjutsu. Individual eyes differ in aptitude and power 3 32 262.
- Enhanced perception: Shisui sees difficult shuriken attacks as slower after activation; Sasuke reads opponents’ chakra and movements 3 135.
- Technique copying: Moku copies Water Dragon Bullet from a Kirigakure ninja encountered on a mission 32.
- Genjutsu: Nobuo specializes in Sharingan illusions; Madara uses his eyes to immobilize attackers and turn enemies against one another 32 66 103.
- Physical limitations: Seeing an attack does not guarantee the body can evade it. Nobuo recognizes Madara’s movement but cannot react quickly enough 30.
Advanced Ocular Forms
These forms are documented among particular members, not possessed by every Uchiha.
| Form | Documented Capabilities and Conditions |
|---|---|
| Mangekyō Sharingan | Grants abilities that vary by individual. Shisui possesses Kotoamatsukami; Obito possesses Kamui; Sasuke uses Amaterasu. Sasuke’s awakening follows the shock of seeing Neji apparently fatally wounded 192 193 235. |
| Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan | Sasuke obtains it through transplantation of Itachi’s eyes. A brother’s Mangekyō can advance ocular power, while Hashirama cells repair damage associated with Mangekyō use 238. |
| Rinnegan | Identified as the Sharingan’s final evolution. Hokage Madara transplants his original Rinnegan from Nagato; Sasuke later reveals his own evolved eyes and attacks across space 238 263. |
Susanoo
Susanoo manifests a powerful chakra construct used for defense and large-scale attacks 68 227.
- Hokage Madara’s Susanoo remains deep blue despite his use of Itachi’s body 68.
- Sasuke’s purple Perfect Susanoo carries the Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade 263.
- Sasuke and Edo Madara fight using enormous complete forms, demonstrating the technique’s scale at the clan’s highest levels 291 294.
Fire Release and Weapon Skills
- Fire Release: Great Fireball is described as the clan’s most commonly used Fire Release technique. Members also demonstrate Dragon Fire, Majestic Destroyer Flame, and other powerful fire attacks 32 54 262.
- Shuriken techniques: Clan training includes precision throwing, deflection, and complex trajectories; Itachi’s demonstrations become a major source of his reputation 13 15 31.
- Genjutsu without the Sharingan: Madara defeats Nobuo’s illusion without activating his eyes, explicitly rejecting the idea that Uchiha genjutsu depends entirely on the bloodline ability 32.
Izanagi
Izanagi rewrites unfavorable events—including death—as illusion while making favorable outcomes real for a limited period 263.
- The Sharingan used to cast it permanently loses its sight 263.
- Obito uses it to survive Sasuke’s beheading attack and continue fighting 263.
