Background / History
Tongtian is one of the Three Pure Ones and is counted among the orthodox lineage of Pangu. At Zixiao Palace, Hongjun accepts him as a disciple and grants him the Four Swords of Zhu Xian and the Zhu Xian Formation Diagram, a formation said to require four Sages to break. Tongtian subsequently receives an exceptional number of additional treasures from Treasure Distribution Cliff. 20 21
His approach to teaching differs sharply from that of his brothers. Tongtian accepts disciples without regard for origin, background, or conduct, building a vast following that includes personal disciples, attendant immortals, inner disciples, and outer disciples. The resulting disorder on Kunlun Mountain contributes to repeated conflict with Yuanshi and plants the seeds of the Three Pure Ones’ eventual split. 35
After leaving Kunlun, Tongtian establishes Jade Beryl Palace on Golden Ao Island in the East Sea as the Intercepting Sect’s dojo. He lectures openly, allowing beings of every kind to hear the Dao; the sect becomes known for “ten thousand immortals paying homage” and is hailed as a foremost Primordial sect. 55
During the Investiture of the Gods calamity, Tongtian initially orders his disciples to remain in their abodes, only to realize that his enemies will draw them into the conflict regardless. Di Xin persuades him to act, and Tongtian deploys the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation against Yuanshi. 133 136
Within the formation, Tongtian’s Sword Dao undergoes a major transformation. His despair over his brothers’ betrayal turns to hope after Nuwa aids him, allowing his sword path to become sharper and more vital rather than merely destructive. He kills Yuanshi and Laozi, severs his brotherhood with them, and renounces the title “Supreme Pure Heavenshaker” in favor of “Tongtian, Sect Master of the Intercepting Sect.” 143 146 147
After the battle, Tongtian annihilates the Heavenly Origin Sect, the Human Religion, and the Western Sect’s disciples involved in the calamity, placing their true spirits on the Investiture of the Gods. He later accepts Shen Gongbao as a disciple and entrusts him with the Investiture. 147 148 149
Following the calamity, Tongtian takes the office of Great Emperor Ziwei of the North Pole and secures prominent heavenly positions for Intercepting Sect disciples. When Yuanshi is resurrected, Tongtian defeats him again in Chaos without relying on the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. 152 153 156 157
Personality
Tongtian is proud, emotionally direct, and fiercely protective of his disciples. His willingness to teach all beings without distinction earns him broad admiration, but his indiscriminate recruitment also becomes a source of conflict with Yuanshi and Laozi. 35 55 56
He initially tries to keep the Intercepting Sect out of the Investiture of the Gods calamity, demonstrating both attachment to his disciples and a degree of political naivety. When he learns that Yuanshi has acted against them, he becomes cold, resentful, and unwilling to preserve brotherly harmony at their expense. 133 139
Tongtian’s later conduct is markedly harsher. After killing his brothers, he methodically eliminates enemy sect disciples to settle karmic debts and end the calamity. Even Nuwa observes that his previous friendly and approachable nature has been replaced by a murderous ruthlessness. 147 148 149
Despite this severity, he remains capable of gratitude and generosity. He openly thanks Nuwa for aiding him, grants Zhao Gongming the Three-Grade Golden Lotus, promotes Shen Gongbao and others to personal disciples, and bestows the Heart-Piercing Lock upon Shen Gongbao. 145 151 154
