Background / History

Laozi is the Grand Pure One of Pangu's Three Pure Ones, alongside Jade Pure Yuanshi and Supreme Pure Tongtian. The three were regarded as Pangu's orthodox lineage and traveled together to hear Hongjun preach at Zixiao Palace after Laozi proposed it. 2 5

At Zixiao Palace, Laozi questioned Hongjun about the Dao and sagehood. Hongjun accepted the Three Pure Ones as disciples and granted Laozi the Taiji Diagram, an Innate Supreme Treasure transformed from the Sky-Opening Axe. 20

After severing the Three Corpses, Laozi established the Human Religion to teach and guide the Human Race. His attempt to unite the Three Corpses failed because they repelled one another, forcing him to complete his ascension through Merit instead. 33

Following the Three Pure Ones' separation, Laozi moved with his sole disciple Xuandu to Shouyang Mountain, where he established the Eight Sceneries Palace. He spent his time refining pills and accepted no further disciples. 55

Appearance

Laozi is depicted as an old, stooped man who travels on a green ox and carries a plain staff. In battle, he commonly bears the Heaven and Earth Mysterious Yellow Exquisite Pagoda above his head. 138

Personality

Laozi is generally composed, deliberate, and concerned with preserving harmony among the Three Pure Ones. When facing Tongtian's Immortal Slaying Sword Formation, he entered alone because he believed that defeating Tongtian two against one would leave his younger brother unconvinced. 138

His concern for brotherhood has limits. He supported Yuanshi's position during the conflict with Tongtian, criticizing Tongtian for indiscriminately accepting disciples and viewing the calamity as a means of cleansing Tongtian's sect. 139 Even after being driven from the formation, however, Laozi remained uneasy about permanently severing ties with Tongtian. 141

Way of Taiji

Laozi cultivates the Way of Taiji, one of the Innate Five Primes. It is more profound than the Way of Yin and Yang, which is described as a branch born from Taiji. 144
