Ch. 401Heading to Mt. Pyre

Plot and key events

After graduating, Zhang Cheng settles near Modu University and dedicates himself to training his Pokémon while following reports of Legendary Pokémon. He wants to grow powerful enough to find his father and reunite his family, and he now aims to catch Pokémon at least at the pseudo-legendary level. After two months without news, he learns that Moltres has appeared on Mt. Pyre and immediately sets off, reaching the mountain ahead of other Trainers.
While exploring, Zhang Cheng hears a battle and finds two members of the R Organization, Wu Gang and Wu Tie, attacking Champion-level Trainer Liu Jin. Liu tries to flee on Swellow, but their Steelix and Ekans bring it down. When Liu’s appeal to League protection fails, he offers to reveal Moltres’s location in exchange for his life. The two villains claim they will spare him if he leads them there, though Wu Gang threatens him into compliance.

Character developments

  • Zhang Cheng remains focused and patient about his larger ambitions, but the chance to encounter Moltres makes him act immediately. He watches the fight rather than intervene, prioritizing caution.
  • Liu Jin shifts from defiant confidence to desperation when trapped. He tries to use his League status to protect himself, then bargains with information to survive.
  • Wu Gang and Wu Tie show themselves to be ruthless and practical: they outnumber Liu, attack his escape route, and exploit his fear to obtain what they want.

Interactions

Liu’s battle with the R Organization ends in defeat when Swellow is forced down. He then attempts to negotiate, while Wu Tie briefly entertains the bargain and Wu Gang reinforces their control with threats. Zhang Cheng observes the exchange from hiding, remaining uninvolved.

Significant themes

The chapter emphasizes strength as a prerequisite for survival and influence, the danger and competition surrounding Legendary Pokémon, and the limits of official protection when powerful criminals disregard the law. It also highlights Zhang Cheng’s patience and ambition as he pursues strength for both personal goals and future opportunities.

Ch. 402Moltres Appears

Plot points and events

  • Wu Gang and Wu Tie force Liu Jin to guide them to Moltres’s cave, while Zhang Cheng secretly follows, hoping the R Organization members will engage the legendary Pokémon first.
  • At the cave, Wu Gang and Wu Tie demand that Liu Jin use his already-injured Swellow as bait. Swellow draws Moltres out but is struck by her Flamethrower; Liu Jin recalls it just before it falls into the magma.
  • Zhang Cheng uses his Detection System to assess Moltres: she is a level 73 female with S potential, a Charcoal that strengthens her Fire moves, and the Flame Body ability.
  • Once Moltres appears, Liu Jin takes advantage of the men’s distraction and escapes on Rapidash. Wu Tie is furious because they had planned to kill him, but Wu Gang prioritizes capturing Moltres.
  • Moltres attacks the intruders with Air Slash. Wu Gang and Wu Tie defend with Steelix and Ekans, then counterattack with Rock Slide and Acid. Moltres’s Flamethrower vaporizes the Acid and badly burns Ekans, though Steelix’s Rock Slide injures her.
  • Seeing that their two Pokémon may not be enough, Wu Gang orders their remaining combat-capable Pokémon into the fight. The men are also racing against the possibility that other Trainers will arrive.

Character developments and interactions

  • Liu Jin is coerced into helping but protects Swellow as best he can, then makes a quick escape when Moltres appears.
  • Wu Gang remains focused on capturing Moltres to improve his standing in the R Organization; Wu Tie is more openly angry when Liu Jin gets away.
  • Zhang Cheng stays concealed and gathers information, judging Moltres’s strength before the confrontation unfolds.
  • Moltres reacts fiercely to what she perceives as a provocation and intrusion into her territory, quickly demonstrating her power against both Pokémon and people.

Significant themes

  • Coercion and betrayal: Wu Gang and Wu Tie exploit Liu Jin’s knowledge and never intend to honor their promise to release him.
  • Survival and opportunism: Liu Jin escapes when the men are distracted, while Zhang Cheng lets others take the first risk.
  • Power and ambition: Moltres’s exceptional strength drives the confrontation, and Wu Gang’s desire for status pushes him to pursue her despite the danger.

Ch. 403Moltres Defeated

Key plot points and events

  • Wu Gang and Wu Tie send all their Pokémon against the airborne Moltres. Crawdaunt’s super-effective Hydro Pump, combined with Ekans’s Venoshock, removes about half of Moltres’s HP.
  • Moltres’s Flamethrower knocks Ekans out, and Wu Tie recalls it.
  • Moltres creates Fire Spin, trapping and steadily damaging the remaining attackers. Mightyena uses Snarl to weaken Moltres’s Special Attack, but Moltres switches tactics and hits Mightyena with Brave Bird.
  • After Brave Bird leaves Moltres grounded, Wu Gang seizes the opening. Crawdaunt’s Crabhammer and Steelix’s Dig deal heavy, super-effective damage; Mightyena finishes Moltres with Crunch.
  • Moltres is unconscious, making it much easier to capture.

Character and team developments

  • Wu Gang remains tactical, recognizing the opportunity created when Moltres lands after Brave Bird.
  • Wu Tie adjusts the team’s approach through Mightyena’s Snarl, though Ekans’s defeat visibly troubles him.
  • Crawdaunt proves to be the team’s strongest source of damage, while the Pokémon coordinate effectively despite being under pressure.

Significant themes

  • Teamwork and timing: The coordinated final assault succeeds because the trainers exploit Moltres’s recovery window.
  • Adaptation in battle: Moltres responds to Snarl by choosing a physical attack instead of relying on weakened Special Attack.
  • Risk and opportunity: Brave Bird injures Mightyena but leaves Moltres exposed to close-range attacks.

Ch. 404Zhang Cheng stepped in

Plot points and events

  • Wu Gang prepares to capture the weakened Moltres, but Zhang Cheng interrupts by knocking away his Poké Ball and striking Wu Tie’s Mightyena with Poliwrath’s Dynamic Punch. Mightyena is defeated, leaving Wu Tie without a usable Pokémon.
  • Zhang Cheng attacks Wu Gang’s Crawdaunt and Steelix with Poliwrath and Swampert. Crawdaunt breaks free of Poliwrath’s Submission, while Steelix tries to evade Swampert’s Hydro Cannon with Dig but is hit and badly weakened.
  • Wu Gang tells Wu Tie to capture Moltres while he holds Zhang Cheng off. Zhang Cheng releases Togekiss to block Wu Tie’s Poké Ball, then brings out Ampharos and Pidgeot to join the fight.
  • Zhang Cheng concentrates his team’s attacks on Crawdaunt. Steelix tries to assist, but Swampert’s Whirlpool holds it back. Crawdaunt’s Protect fails under the combined assault of Ampharos, Pidgeot, and Poliwrath, and Crawdaunt is defeated.
  • With only Steelix left, Wu Gang secretly signals another R Organization Champion-level Trainer on Mt. Pyre for help. Zhang Cheng orders Swampert and Poliwrath to attack Steelix with Water-type moves, leaving its defeat imminent.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng acts decisively and strategically, prioritizing Wu Tie’s weakest Pokémon, preventing the capture of Moltres, and focusing his team’s fire on Crawdaunt before targeting Steelix.
  • Wu Gang responds skillfully at first, ordering Crawdaunt to counterattack and Steelix to evade and defend. As his position deteriorates, he shifts from pursuing Moltres to seeking outside help.
  • Wu Tie is quickly sidelined after Mightyena falls. He attempts to capture Moltres but is stopped by Togekiss.
  • Zhang Cheng openly dismisses the R Organization’s reputation and confronts both men, while Wu Gang and Wu Tie coordinate: Wu Gang fights and Wu Tie tries to secure Moltres.

Significant themes

  • Tactical teamwork: Zhang Cheng coordinates multiple Pokémon to isolate threats and exploit type weaknesses.
  • Power and vulnerability: Even strong Trainers can be overwhelmed when their Pokémon are disadvantaged or outnumbered.
  • Ambition and survival: Wu Gang’s attempt to claim Moltres gives way to a desperate appeal for help once victory seems unlikely.

Ch. 405Catching Moltres

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Cheng attempts to capture the unconscious Moltres. After 65 Poké Balls fail, the 66th finally holds, and Moltres is captured.
  • Wu Gang and Wu Tie’s Steelix is defeated by Poliwrath. Zhang orders Ampharos to finish the two men; its Thunderbolt kills them as they flee.
  • Before Zhang can leave Mt. Pyre, another R Organization member arrives and demands Moltres. Zhang refuses and taunts him, then uses Togekiss’s Air Slash to break Solrock’s Protect.
  • Zhang’s apparent willingness to fight is a feint: he escapes on Pidgeot. The man pursues on Fearow with Solrock and Lunatone, but Swampert’s Wide Guard blocks their Confusion and Pidgeot pulls out of range.
  • The pursuer refuses to give up. Zhang considers turning to fight, but worries that a battle at Mt. Pyre would attract other Trainers who might take advantage of the situation.

Character developments

  • Zhang is persistent, resourceful, and ruthless: he patiently spends dozens of Poké Balls to secure Moltres, kills the defeated R Organization members, and uses deception and preparation to escape the next attacker.
  • The muscular R Organization member is confident and opportunistic. He tries to claim Moltres after the others are dead, then becomes determined to chase Zhang when his demand fails.
  • Wu Gang and Wu Tie are removed from the conflict, with Wu Gang briefly focused on escape rather than Moltres.

Character interactions

  • Zhang’s Pokémon work together to defeat the R Organization members and protect his escape: Poliwrath defeats Steelix, Ampharos attacks the fleeing men, Togekiss breaks Solrock’s barrier, and Swampert shields Pidgeot from psychic attacks.
  • Zhang and the muscular man trade threats over Moltres, then shift into a pursuit after Zhang’s sudden retreat.
  • The new pursuer’s Solrock and Lunatone attempt to stop Pidgeot, while Zhang’s prepared defense foils them.

Significant themes

  • Persistence and preparation: Capturing Moltres takes repeated attempts, while Zhang’s planned escape depends on anticipating the pursuit.
  • Cunning over force: Zhang avoids a potentially costly confrontation by disguising his intentions and fleeing.
  • Power and ruthlessness: The struggle for Moltres escalates into betrayal, lethal violence, and a continuing chase.

Ch. 406Battling the Muscleman

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Cheng stops fleeing and waits on the plains for the R Organization muscleman, deciding to eliminate the threat rather than let him pursue them later.
  • When the muscleman demands Moltres, Zhang Cheng launches a surprise attack: Poliwrath and Swampert target Solrock, while Pidgeot traps Fearow in a Hurricane.
  • Solrock’s hastily formed Protect is broken by the combined Hydro Pump and Mud Bomb; Hydro Pump then badly damages it. Pidgeot’s Hurricane pins Fearow and injures it, but Lunatone’s Psyshock disrupts Pidgeot’s control and allows Fearow to escape.
  • Zhang orders his Pokémon to concentrate on Solrock. The muscleman responds by having all three of his Pokémon attack Pidgeot, hoping to trade Solrock for Zhang’s strongest advantage. Solrock is knocked out, but Pidgeot is badly hurt by Psychic attacks and Fearow’s Drill Peck.
  • Zhang has Pidgeot use Roost while Poliwrath and Swampert drive Fearow off with a combined Waterfall. Fearow is left critically weakened, so the muscleman recalls it to preserve its ability to fly. Pidgeot begins recovering.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang is decisive and tactical: he chooses the timing and battlefield, focuses attacks to defeat Solrock, and quickly shifts to protecting Pidgeot when it is in danger.
  • The muscleman proves aggressive and resourceful, adapting to Zhang’s strategy and accepting Solrock’s loss to try to bring down Pidgeot. He ultimately retreats Fearow rather than risk losing it.
  • Zhang’s Pokémon coordinate closely under pressure. Poliwrath and Swampert combine attacks against both Solrock and Fearow, while Pidgeot alternates between offense and recovery.

Significant themes

  • Tactical coordination: Focused attacks and teamwork give Zhang an early advantage, while the muscleman’s counterattack shows the risks of divided attention.
  • Persistence and sacrifice: Both Trainers press their Pokémon hard, with the muscleman willing to lose Solrock in exchange for a chance to defeat Pidgeot.
  • Care amid combat: Zhang balances aggression with protecting his injured Pokémon, using Roost and support from his other partners to keep Pidgeot in the fight.

Ch. 407Diancie's Pleas

Plot and events

  • A hostile Team Rocket (“R Organization”) Trainer sends out his remaining Pokémon. Zhang Cheng answers with his own team and Mega Evolves Diancie.
  • The opponent Mega Evolves Houndoom. Zhang Cheng’s Ampharos paralyzes it, allowing Poliwrath and Swampert to land powerful, super-effective attacks.
  • Crobat attempts a sneak attack on Zhang Cheng, but Togekiss intercepts it with Protect. Enraged, Zhang Cheng orders Mega Diancie to use Light of Ruin.
  • The attack overwhelms all four of the opponent’s Pokémon. Its remaining force also strikes the Trainer, who disappears. Zhang Cheng dismisses his claim that the League will protect him, arguing that it does not protect members of the R Organization.
  • Afterward, Zhang Cheng recalls most of his Pokémon and prepares to fly back to Modu with Pidgeot. Diancie asks to remain Mega Evolved because it thinks it looks prettier. Zhang Cheng agrees, with the condition that Diancie revert if its stamina runs low.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng is decisive and ruthless in battle, prioritizing Mega Houndoom as the main threat and responding to Crobat’s ambush with lethal force. Afterward, he is gentle and affectionate with Diancie.
  • Diancie shows both confidence in its Mega form and a playful, childlike attachment to Zhang Cheng, calling him “Daddy.” Zhang Cheng indulges it while warning it about the physical cost of staying Mega Evolved.
  • The battle highlights the teamwork between Zhang Cheng’s Pokémon: Ampharos creates an opening, Poliwrath and Swampert exploit it, and Togekiss protects Zhang Cheng.

Significant themes

  • Teamwork and tactics: Coordinated moves overcome a powerful opponent.
  • Loyalty and protection: The Pokémon protect Zhang Cheng and support one another.
  • Power and its costs: Mega Evolution offers strength and a form Diancie prefers, but consumes stamina.
  • Justice and violence: Zhang Cheng rejects the idea that criminal affiliation merits League protection, and his response to the ambush is extreme.

Ch. 408Return to Modu

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Cheng returns to Modu with Mega Diancie and leaves his injured Pokémon—including Moltres—at the Pokémon Center for treatment.
  • When Diancie complains of hunger, Zhang Cheng takes her shopping. She rejects Pokéblocks in favor of snacks, and he gives in to her pleading.
  • At the Center, staff escort Zhang Cheng to meet Director Fang Lin, who asks him to help Modu’s Pokémon Center pass its annual League assessment.
  • The Center has failed twice already, and a third failure would cost Fang his position. Zhang agrees to help for a fixed payment of 50 million Pokémon Coins, rejecting Fang’s offer of half his future income.
  • The assessment is one week away. Zhang accepts, confident that he is the only suitable young Trainer available in Modu.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng is practical and self-assured: he cares for his injured Pokémon, indulges Diancie, and negotiates firmly with Fang rather than accepting an uncertain reward.
  • Mega Diancie is playful and persuasive, openly insisting on the snacks she wants and charming Zhang into buying them.
  • Fang Lin is anxious about losing his lucrative post but quickly agrees to Zhang’s price when he realizes he has few alternatives.
  • The Pokémon Center staff treat Zhang respectfully, and its doctor handles Moltres’s injuries without probing into how he was hurt.

Significant themes

  • Loyalty and care: Zhang prioritizes his Pokémon’s treatment and looks after Diancie’s needs.
  • Money and leverage: Zhang recognizes Fang’s desperation and uses his scarcity as a bargaining advantage.
  • High-stakes competition: Modu’s assessment is unusually difficult because the city’s Center serves a large Trainer population and earns substantial revenue.

Ch. 409Moltres Takes the Field

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Cheng replaces Pidgeot with Moltres, valuing her strength, Flying- and Fire-type moves, and usefulness as transportation.
  • He buys Technical Machines for her, then spends several days training her at Modu’s largest training facility and introducing her to his other Pokémon.
  • Moltres quickly learns a broad set of moves. Zhang Cheng checks her status: she is Level 73, has S-grade potential, holds Charcoal, and has the Flame Body ability.
  • To test her strength and build their coordination, Zhang Cheng challenges a Champion-level Trainer, Du Ling, to a six-on-six battle.
  • Zhang sends out Moltres; Du Ling chooses Arcanine. Du Ling is astonished that Zhang has caught another rare Pokémon. The chapter ends before the battle begins.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng takes responsibility for training Moltres and prepares her carefully before seeking a serious battle. He is surprised to learn how widely he is recognized as the year’s National Intercollegiate League champion.
  • Moltres appears increasingly comfortable with Zhang, responding calmly when he welcomes her as his Pokémon. She is aloof toward most of his team but warmly greets Diancie, another Legendary or Mythical Pokémon.
  • Du Ling is cordial and eager to battle Zhang, but openly shocked by Moltres’s presence. His reaction hints at the rarity of the Pokémon Zhang has assembled.

Significant themes

  • Trust and partnership: Moltres’s growing friendliness and Zhang’s hands-on training mark the beginning of their partnership.
  • Preparation and testing: Zhang builds Moltres’s move set and seeks a battle to turn training into practical experience.
  • Rarity, status, and ambition: Zhang’s Legendary and Mythical Pokémon distinguish him from other Trainers and impress even an experienced Champion-level opponent.

Ch. 410Victory in the first battle

Key plot points

  • Du Ling’s Arcanine opens the battle with Extreme Speed, but Zhang Cheng’s Moltres blocks it with Protect.
  • Moltres counters with Brave Bird. Arcanine’s Fire Blast does little because Moltres is both resistant to Fire-type attacks and accustomed to the volcanic heat of Mt. Pyre.
  • Brave Bird sends Arcanine flying and leaves it flinching. Moltres then lands a critical Air Slash, reducing Arcanine to dangerously low health.
  • Arcanine fires Hyper Beam, but Moltres evades with Fly and dives back down to defeat it.
  • Du Ling recalls Arcanine, acknowledges Moltres’s strength, and sends out Golduck, a Water-type Pokémon. Zhang Cheng uses his Detection System to inspect Golduck’s abilities and moves.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng demonstrates quick, effective battle judgment: he protects Moltres from the opening strike, presses its advantage, and uses Fly to evade Hyper Beam.
  • Moltres shows confidence and overwhelming power, responding aggressively after its first battle begins and fighting with extra spirit after Zhang praises it.
  • Du Ling adapts once he realizes Fire attacks cannot trouble Moltres; after Arcanine’s defeat, he chooses Golduck to counter it.
  • The trainers’ exchange is respectful: Du Ling openly admires Moltres, while Zhang explains why Arcanine struggled.

Significant themes

  • Adaptation and strategy: Choosing the right attack—and recognizing when a type matchup is unfavorable—shapes the battle.
  • Experience and natural advantage: Moltres’s legendary power, Fire resistance, and experience in a volcanic environment outweigh Arcanine’s impressive statistics.
  • Trust between trainer and Pokémon: Zhang’s commands and praise encourage Moltres, while both trainers respond to changing circumstances.

Ch. 411A Battle Against a Type Disadvantage

Plot points and events

  • Zhang Cheng keeps Moltres in the battle despite Golduck’s Water-type advantage, using the match to build Moltres’s experience against difficult opponents.
  • Moltres creates Sunny Day, weakening Golduck’s Water attacks and boosting Fire-type moves. Golduck’s Surf still hits, but does less damage than it otherwise would.
  • Zhang Cheng’s real plan is to use the sunlight to fire Solar Beam without its usual charge. The super-effective blast breaks through Golduck’s Protect and leaves it badly hurt.
  • Du Ling stays composed and has Golduck use Hypnosis, putting Moltres to sleep. He then chooses Calm Mind to strengthen Golduck before attacking.
  • Moltres wakes sooner than expected, demonstrating the resilience of a Legendary Pokémon. As Golduck prepares Hydro Pump, Moltres gathers energy faster and fires another Solar Beam. The chapter ends with the attack aimed at Golduck.

Character development and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng shows strategic foresight: he accepts the type disadvantage, combines Sunny Day with Solar Beam, and reacts quickly when Moltres wakes.
  • Du Ling proves to be a disciplined Trainer, capitalizing on Moltres’s moment of vulnerability without rushing into an attack.
  • Moltres is injured and briefly incapacitated, but its quick recovery and ability to act rapidly under sunlight highlight its strength and determination.
  • Golduck follows Du Ling’s commands with practiced coordination, shifting from attack to defense, then to status infliction and preparation.

Significant themes

  • Strategy can counter type disadvantage: weather, move choice, and timing let Zhang Cheng challenge Golduck’s natural advantage.
  • Composure and adaptability matter: both Trainers respond to changing conditions, and neither assumes an early advantage guarantees victory.
  • Partnership and experience: the Trainers’ quick coordination with their Pokémon reflects trust built through repeated battles.

Ch. 412Girafarig

Plot points and events

  • Golduck’s Hydro Pump clashes with Moltres’s Solar Beam, and the resulting explosion badly injures both Pokémon.
  • Their Trainers order simultaneous finishing attacks: Golduck uses Psyshock, while Moltres uses Air Slash. Both attacks land, and Golduck and Moltres are knocked out together.
  • Zhang Cheng sends out Poliwrath; Du Ling answers with Girafarig, whose battle data Zhang Cheng examines. She is a level-72, A-potential Normal/Psychic Pokémon with a wide move pool and the Sap Sipper ability.
  • Du Ling opens with Reflect to reduce damage from Poliwrath’s physical attacks. Zhang Cheng still orders Dynamic Punch, using its confusion effect as well as its damage.
  • Girafarig is confused, and Zhang Cheng follows up with Hydro Pump. Du Ling tells her to stay clearheaded and counter with Psychic Fangs; the chapter ends before the attacks’ outcome is shown.

Character developments

  • Zhang Cheng recognizes Moltres’s exceptional strength: under capable direction, a Legendary Pokémon can defeat two opponents before falling.
  • He shows tactical flexibility by using Dynamic Punch’s confusion effect to disrupt Girafarig, then switching to a special attack rather than relying on weakened physical blows.
  • Du Ling demonstrates familiarity with Poliwrath, prepares defensively with Reflect, and quickly identifies Zhang Cheng’s strategy.

Significant themes

  • Tactics over raw power: Move effects, type matchups, and defensive setup shape the fight as much as strength.
  • Trust between Trainer and Pokémon: Poliwrath follows Zhang Cheng’s unconventional command without hesitation.
  • Battlefield momentum: In the earlier exchange, both Pokémon are near defeat, so acting first can determine the result.

Character interactions

  • Zhang Cheng and Du Ling read the battle closely and issue nearly simultaneous commands in the Golduck–Moltres exchange.
  • They recall their defeated Pokémon with mutual respect.
  • Their contest continues through tactical counters: Du Ling uses Reflect against Poliwrath, Zhang Cheng exploits Dynamic Punch’s confusion effect, and Du Ling responds with Psychic Fangs.

Ch. 413A battle between starter Pokémon

Chapter summary

  • Girafarig’s Psychic Fangs and Poliwrath’s Hydro Pump both landed. The Hydro Pump, following an earlier Dynamic Punch, left Girafarig below half health; Psychic Fangs also badly hurt Poliwrath.
  • Zhang Cheng had Poliwrath use Rain Dance to strengthen its Water-type attacks. Du Ling tried to stop the weather change with Girafarig’s Thunderbolt, but Girafarig’s confusion made the attack backfire and cost it more health.
  • With Girafarig weakened and unable to overcome its confusion, Poliwrath used a rain-boosted Hydro Cannon. Girafarig could not follow Du Ling’s order to use Protect and was knocked out. Du Ling recalled it and praised Poliwrath; Zhang Cheng credited the Pokémon’s long history as his trusted partner.
  • Du Ling then sent out his own longtime partner, Seismitoad, revealing it as his starter. Zhang Cheng scanned it and found it to be a powerful Level 73 Pokémon with Swift Swim, an ability that boosts speed in rain.
  • Rain gave both Pokémon a speed advantage, while Poliwrath’s resistance to Water-type moves was its main defensive edge. Du Ling opened the new matchup with Seismitoad’s Hydro Pump, which was boosted by the rain despite being resisted by Poliwrath.

Character and relationship developments

Zhang Cheng shows confidence in his battle plan, using weather and Poliwrath’s strength to secure the win. His pride in Poliwrath reflects their long partnership. Du Ling accepts Girafarig’s defeat with respect, then raises the stakes by sending in another carefully trained longtime companion.

Themes and interactions

The battle emphasizes how status conditions, weather, and move choice can decide a fight as much as raw strength. Confusion undermines Du Ling’s commands at a crucial moment, while Rain Dance shifts the conditions for both trainers. The mutual respect between Zhang Cheng and Du Ling remains evident even as they compete.

Ch. 414Poliwrath vs. Seismitoad

Plot points and events

  • Seismitoad opens with Hydro Pump, and Zhang Cheng has Poliwrath answer with the same move. The attacks are evenly matched, but Poliwrath takes less damage thanks to its type advantage.
  • Du Ling switches tactics, using Supersonic to prompt Poliwrath to Protect, then follows with Toxic while Protect is unavailable.
  • Zhang Cheng chooses to attack rather than defend. Poliwrath pushes through the poison with Waterfall, badly damaging Seismitoad, though it becomes badly poisoned.
  • Poliwrath’s Hydro Cannon shatters Seismitoad’s Protect barrier and leaves Seismitoad near defeat. While Poliwrath is briefly unable to move after the attack, Seismitoad lands Venoshock, which hits harder because Poliwrath is poisoned.
  • As poison continues draining Poliwrath’s health, Zhang Cheng orders another Waterfall in an attempt to finish Seismitoad. The chapter ends as Poliwrath gathers water energy to attack; the outcome is not yet shown.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng relies on Poliwrath’s type advantage and an aggressive, move-for-move strategy, accepting poison damage to press for a quick victory.
  • Du Ling reads Zhang Cheng’s approach and responds with a deliberate setup: bait Protect, land Toxic, then exploit the poison with Venoshock and defensive stalling.
  • Poliwrath shows enthusiasm for head-on combat and grows more determined under pressure, continuing to fight despite worsening poison.
  • Seismitoad is pushed hard by Poliwrath’s attacks but follows Du Ling’s tactical instructions to survive and exploit its opponent’s vulnerability.

Significant themes

  • Adaptation and counterplay: Both Trainers anticipate and answer each other’s tactics.
  • Risk versus defense: Zhang Cheng trades safety for pressure, while Du Ling seeks to buy time and let poison do its work.
  • Resilience under pressure: Poliwrath’s fighting spirit intensifies even as it is weakened.

Ch. 415Mega Mawile

Plot points and events

  • Du Ling’s Seismitoad tries to defend against Poliwrath’s Waterfall, but Poliwrath breaks through its barrier and knocks it out.
  • Toxic poison then drains Poliwrath’s remaining strength, so it also faints. The exchange leaves Zhang Cheng with four battle-ready Pokémon and Du Ling with two.
  • Du Ling remarks on how quickly Zhang Cheng has advanced from Junior Champion to one of the strongest Champion-level Trainers. Zhang credits both hard work and fortunate opportunities.
  • The battle continues. Du Ling sends out Mawile, and Zhang chooses Ampharos.
  • Zhang recognizes that Mawile will likely Mega Evolve. Du Ling confirms this immediately, using an Evolution Crystal to begin her transformation.

Character developments

  • Zhang Cheng is confident and eager to keep battling, treating the match as a chance to gain experience. He also shows respect for Du Ling’s skill and acknowledges the role of luck alongside effort.
  • Du Ling is surprised by Zhang’s rapid progress. Their conversation prompts him to reflect that effort matters, while some outcomes depend on fate.
  • Poliwrath fights with desperate determination, breaking through Seismitoad’s defense before succumbing to Toxic.
  • Mawile enters the battle as Du Ling’s next major threat, set up to exploit her Mega Evolution.

Character interactions

  • Zhang praises Poliwrath’s performance as both Pokémon are recalled.
  • Du Ling compliments Zhang’s growth, and Zhang responds by discussing hard work and opportunity.
  • The Trainers agree to continue the battle, each looking forward to facing the other’s next Pokémon.

Significant themes

  • Hard work and fortune: Zhang and Du Ling recognize that improvement comes from effort, but also from circumstances beyond a Trainer’s control.
  • Growth through competition: Zhang values the battle as a way to develop his experience and skill.
  • Strategic strengths and weaknesses: Mawile’s ordinary stats are modest, but Mega Evolution grants her Huge Power, dramatically amplifying her physical attacks. Her high attack and defenses are offset by low speed and HP, making her a specialized opponent.

Ch. 416Mawile showed its might

Plot points and events

  • Zhang Cheng Mega Evolves Ampharos into Mega Ampharos to face Du Ling’s Mega Mawile, despite the added Dragon typing making it vulnerable to Fairy attacks.
  • Mega Ampharos’s powerful Thunder overwhelms Mega Mawile’s Iron Head in their opening clash, though the damage is limited.
  • Du Ling switches to the type advantage: Mega Mawile’s Play Rough breaks through Mega Ampharos’s Protect and cuts its HP to roughly two-fifths.
  • Zhang Cheng responds with Zap Cannon. Du Ling orders Mega Mawile to use Play Rough again, and Mawile prepares to trade hits directly, aiming to knock Ampharos out in one blow.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng and Mega Ampharos face the unfavorable matchup without hesitation. After Protect fails, Zhang shifts to an aggressive strategy.
  • Du Ling shows confidence in Mega Mawile and encourages it not to fear Zap Cannon.
  • Du Ling’s history with Mawile reveals his loyalty: he kept the once-weak Pokémon and gambled his only Evolution Crystal on it. Mega Evolution made Mawile his strongest fighter.
  • The battle highlights the Trainers’ contrasting tactics: Zhang relies on Mega Ampharos’s immense Special Attack, while Du Ling exploits Mega Mawile’s Huge Power and Fairy-type advantage.

Significant themes

  • Risk and commitment: Du Ling’s gamble on an overlooked Pokémon paid off.
  • Trust between Trainer and Pokémon: Du Ling’s faith strengthens Mawile’s resolve.
  • Power versus type advantage: Ampharos wins the opening exchange, but Mawile’s super-effective attack nearly turns the fight at once.
  • Offense under pressure: Both Trainers commit to forceful attacks, setting up a potentially decisive exchange.

Ch. 417A battle of attrition

Plot points and events

  • Mega Mawile’s Play Rough defeats Mega Ampharos, while Ampharos’s Zap Cannon leaves Mawile badly damaged and paralyzed.
  • Zhang Cheng recalls Ampharos and sends out Swampert, aiming to exploit Mawile’s weakness to Ground-type attacks.
  • Du Ling has Mega Mawile use Swords Dance to raise its already formidable physical attack.
  • Zhang Cheng orders Swampert to repeatedly use Mud Shot, steadily wearing Mawile down. Mawile retaliates with a Swords Dance-boosted Iron Tail, reducing Swampert to about one-fifth of its HP.
  • Zhang keeps Swampert attacking. When Du Ling orders Play Rough to finish it off, Mawile’s earlier paralysis activates, interrupting the attack and leaving the outcome unresolved.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng remains composed and committed to a gradual damage-trading strategy, relying on his Pokémon advantage and Mawile’s lack of recovery moves.
  • Du Ling responds to the unfavorable matchup by boosting Mawile’s power and trying to end the fight quickly.
  • Ampharos’s final attack has a lasting effect: its paralysis continues to hinder Mawile even after Ampharos is defeated.
  • Swampert shows stubborn resolve, continuing its Mud Shot barrage despite taking severe damage.

Significant themes

  • Attrition versus raw power: Zhang’s steady, repeated attacks challenge Mawile’s overwhelming strength.
  • Lingering consequences: Ampharos’s paralysis shapes the next stage of the battle.
  • Persistence and strategy: Swampert’s endurance and Zhang’s patience keep the fight alive despite the damage.

Ch. 418Slaking slacked off

Key plot points and events

  • Mega Mawile’s repeated Mud Shot attacks reduce it to critical HP, but its paralysis wears off. Du Ling orders Metal Claw, and Mega Mawile finishes the already injured Swampert. Zhang Cheng recalls Swampert, whose damage has left Mawile close to defeat.
  • Zhang sends out Kingdra rather than Diancie, since both are vulnerable to Steel attacks and Diancie is especially at risk from Mawile’s immense Physical Attack.
  • Kingdra’s Surf is stopped by Mega Mawile’s Protect. Zhang follows with Water Spout; Du Ling responds with Play Rough. The attacks collide and explode, damaging both Pokémon. Mega Mawile is knocked out, while Kingdra loses about a third of its HP.
  • Du Ling recalls Mawile and reveals his final Pokémon: Slaking. Zhang uses his Detection System to inspect it, learning that Slaking is a powerful Level 73 Pokémon with the Ability Truant, which makes it rest after acting. Its Focus Lens improves the accuracy of moves when it acts slowly.

Character developments

  • Zhang Cheng makes a cautious matchup decision by choosing Kingdra over Diancie, then presses his advantage with Water-type attacks after Du Ling opts to defend.
  • Du Ling shows confidence in Mawile and strong trust in their teamwork, but ultimately saves his final Pokémon—a formidable Slaking—for the decisive stage.
  • Mawile fights through its earlier paralysis and lands the finishing blow on Swampert, but is worn down and defeated in the exchange with Kingdra.
  • Swampert falls after contributing substantial damage to Mawile, while Kingdra enters the next phase injured but still able to battle.

Significant themes

  • Tactical risk and type matchups: Zhang weighs Kingdra’s and Diancie’s vulnerabilities against Mawile’s dangerous Steel attacks.
  • Power balanced by limitations: Slaking’s exceptional strength is tempered by Truant, which creates opportunities for opponents between its actions.
  • Persistence and teamwork: Mawile’s recovery from paralysis and its coordination with Du Ling allow it to defeat Swampert despite its own weakened condition.

Character interactions

  • Zhang and Du Ling trade attacks through their Pokémon: Zhang targets Mawile with Kingdra’s Water moves, while Du Ling alternates between protecting Mawile and having it counter with Play Rough.
  • Du Ling praises Mawile after its defeat and recalls it, then warns Zhang that Slaking is his trump card, raising the stakes for the next clash.

Ch. 419Slaking's Formidable Strength

Key plot points and events

  • Du Ling sends out his Slaking, equipped with a Focus Lens to help ensure its attacks land—a crucial advantage because its Truant Ability forces it to rest after every move.
  • Du Ling opens with Amnesia, raising Slaking’s Special Defense to shore up its main weakness.
  • Zhang Cheng has Kingdra use Water Spout twice. The attacks deal substantial damage, but Slaking’s enormous HP leaves it with roughly two-thirds remaining.
  • Once Slaking finishes resting, Du Ling orders Giga Impact. Slaking smashes through Kingdra’s Protect barrier and launches it across the battlefield, reducing its HP to less than a tenth.
  • Slaking immediately rests again, giving Zhang Cheng an opening. He orders Kingdra to use Outrage for one final attack.

Character developments

  • Du Ling demonstrates careful, strategic training: Slaking’s moves and item are chosen to compensate for its weaknesses and make the most of its immense power.
  • Zhang Cheng adapts after witnessing Slaking’s devastating Giga Impact. Rather than continuing to defend, he chooses to attack during Slaking’s forced rest.
  • Kingdra shows fierce determination. Even badly injured, it refuses to give up and responds to Slaking’s blow with renewed fighting spirit.

Character interactions

  • Du Ling directs Slaking’s measured strategy, using its resting turns to prepare for powerful attacks.
  • Zhang Cheng calls on Kingdra to keep attacking, then shifts tactics after seeing that Slaking’s strength makes defense ineffective.
  • Kingdra follows Zhang Cheng’s commands despite its injuries, while Slaking remains calm between moves, resting as its Ability requires.

Significant themes

  • Strength balanced by limitations: Slaking’s extraordinary power is offset by Truant, so its Trainer must plan around its forced pauses.
  • Preparation and adaptation: Du Ling optimizes Slaking’s build, while Zhang Cheng changes his approach in response to what he learns.
  • Resilience: Kingdra’s determination to fight on highlights courage in the face of overwhelming power.

Ch. 420Diancie vs. Slaking

Key plot points and events

  • Kingdra uses its volatile Dragon-type energy for a powerful Outrage, cutting Slaking’s HP below half. Its attempted follow-up goes wild, however, and Slaking lands Feint Attack while Kingdra is overwhelmed by the energy backlash. Kingdra faints.
  • Zhang Cheng sends out Diancie, his final Pokémon, against Du Ling’s Slaking.
  • Slaking uses Slack Off to recover to over ninety percent HP. Zhang recognizes Slaking’s strength but targets its Truant Ability and uses Toxic while Slaking is resting.
  • Zhang then orders Diamond Storm. It damages Slaking and is intended to give Diancie a chance to raise her Physical Defense, while Toxic threatens to punish Slaking for prolonging the fight. The chapter ends before the battle’s outcome is clear.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Cheng remains confident in Diancie despite Kingdra’s defeat. He quickly shifts from trying to deal damage to using a calculated defensive strategy.
  • Du Ling is eager to test Diancie and plays cautiously, healing Slaking before attacking.
  • Kingdra shows experience suppressing its unstable energy, but its weakened condition makes it unable to control a second Outrage.
  • Slaking is powerful and remarkably resilient, yet its tendency to rest becomes a liability once poisoned. It endures the toxin rather than responding with an attack.

Significant themes

  • Strength versus vulnerability: Slaking’s impressive power and recovery are offset by Truant and its vulnerability to prolonged poison damage.
  • Adaptation and strategy: Zhang changes tactics to exploit Slaking’s habits instead of relying on direct strength.
  • Risk and control: Kingdra’s volatile energy can deliver devastating power, but when control fails, it becomes dangerous to Kingdra itself.
