Background / History

Esdeath has believed since childhood that the weak should obey the strong. As an Imperial general and wielder of the Demon’s Extract, she earns a reputation as the Empire’s strongest warrior; Lin Luo directly assesses her strength as greater than Budo’s 21 22.

After returning from the front lines, she enters the palace by throwing frozen guards inside and challenges Lin Luo, the man who killed Budo. They agree that the loser will belong to the winner. Her broken saber, enormous falling ice mass, and Ice Cavalry army cannot overcome him; his lightning destroys the cavalry, and she accepts defeat 20 21 22.

Esdeath willingly becomes his lifelong servant and undergoes Devil reincarnation with a Rook piece. His supernatural identity does not deter her: she respects his victory and welcomes the opportunity to become stronger. Her submission also ends the hopes of Imperial officials who expected her return to overturn his rule 22 23.

Esdeath actively seeks dangerous opponents and becomes excited rather than discouraged when someone overpowers her. She takes combat seriously even against Lin Luo, whom she already considers her ideal man. Weak enemies bore her, while skilled opponents such as Vali and Schurahat earn her admiration 21 512 590.

Her loyalty to Lin Luo combines respect for strength, affection, and a desire for further growth. She openly flirts with him and competes for his attention, but obeys his orders to hold back—even when confronted with tempting opponents such as the King of Danger Beasts or White Yaksha 22 24 27 621.

Despite her bloodlust, she is not indiscriminately destructive. She refuses to kill Bang once he stops fighting because it would provide no enjoyment, chooses infiltration when destroying a building might let enemies escape, and ultimately spares Vali because he is an ally.
