Background / History
Phantylia became one of Nanook’s seven Lord Ravagers and inherited a portion of the authority and memories of his first Emanator, who disappeared after traveling beyond Qlipoth’s Wall. Those memories preserved knowledge of Voracity, the terrifying Ancient Beast and Aeon beyond the wall 27 71.
Before infiltrating the Luofu, she had destroyed more than one hundred star systems. Her preferred method was to undermine a civilization’s beliefs, trust, and hope until it collapsed internally, leaving little resistance for the Destruction Legion 27.
Luocha drew her to the Xianzhou Luofu, where her principal objective was obtaining a durable body through the Ambrosial Arbor. Although she served Destruction, she feared being destroyed herself. Destroying the Luofu was an opportunity she would accept, rather than the expedition’s essential goal 27.
Appearance
Phantylia appears in three distinct forms during the Luofu crisis: Tingyun’s Foxian guise, her own spirit-flame form, and a physical body fashioned from the Ambrosial Arbor 27 68 71.
- Tingyun disguise: A fair-skinned Foxian woman with a beautiful face, long legs, a full bust, and a long tail 27.
- Heliobus form: A flame with a blue exterior and yellow core, seen seated upon a lotus at the Mystic Root 68.
- Noble Body: A voluptuous physical form revealed as her lotus throne rises. She returns to her Heliobus form after Jiang Yao captures her 68 71.
- Cooking form: Reshapes herself into a configuration resembling the character 山 while applying heat to ingredients 73.
Personality
Phantylia enjoys destruction for its own sake; the narration explicitly rejects a tragic justification for her cruelty. She takes particular pleasure in civilizations crumbling from within and regards the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus as disposable tools. Direct fighting conflicts with her preferred approach of remaining hidden and manipulating others 27 68.
Her arrogance coexists with a strong survival instinct. She recognizes Jing Yuan’s bait but believes she can exploit it, then repeatedly reassures herself that Jiang Yao cannot be an Aeon even after his presence terrifies her. Her new Noble Body briefly restores her confidence, but not enough to persuade her to stand and fight 56 68.
Under Jiang Yao’s control, she becomes outwardly flattering and obedient while privately resentful. Her cooperation is driven by fear of being eaten, not repentance. She remains willing to intimidate weaker subordinates and sacrifice the Borisin for her own safety 71 74 123.
Abilities & Skills
Psychological Warfare
Phantylia specializes in destroying the social and spiritual foundations of civilizations rather than relying primarily on military force 27.
- Encourages religious conflict, mistrust, despair, and the collapse of shared beliefs 27.
- Uses infiltrators, traitors, and local factions to prepare a world for the Destruction Legion 27.
- Plans to turn Jiang Yao into a Voidranger while retaining enough consciousness for him to suffer deprivation 30 61.
- Her attempt against Jiang Yao fails, and attacking his ingredients provokes the retaliation that ends her independence 64 71.
Shapeshifting and Infiltration
As a Heliobus, Phantylia can change form and convincingly impersonate others 27 74.
- Infiltrates the Sky-Faring Commission as Tingyun and receives assignments from Yukong without initially exposing herself 27 28.
- Is ordered to adopt a Long-Life Envoy’s form to infiltrate a Borisin Beast Ship 74.
- Successfully infiltrates and subdues the Borisin, later using restricted access and a warded room to reinforce her authority 122 123.
Heliobi are described as feeding on emotions and possessing hosts to manipulate their feelings. Jiang Yao considers whether this could let Phantylia alter hormones and improve meat, but this specific mechanism is presented as his hypothesis 90.
Destruction-Based Ingredient Refinement
Jiang Yao discovers that Phantylia’s Destruction power can break down and reconstruct ingredients’ flavors while strengthening their resulting effects 74.
- Remakes unpleasant tastes, making otherwise undesirable ingredients useful to Jiang Yao 74.
- Directly refines Hoolay’s meat before returning beneath the wok to supply heat 98.
- Makes the Borisin valuable to Jiang Yao as a potential continuing food supply, despite their initially unappealing taste 74 90.
Heat Control
Phantylia learns to use her spirit-flame form as a cooking heat source under Jiang Yao’s direction 71 72.
- Maintains and adjusts heat for Buddha Jumps Over the Wall and later dishes 72 73 125.
- Applies different temperatures to specific portions of the Prickly Rose Mushroom 73.
- Initially struggles with demands for temperature accuracy to four decimal places, but becomes increasingly reliable as an assistant 73 125.
- Cannot confidently claim that her heat could melt the substance flowing from Nanook’s body; she stresses the difference between an Emanator and an Aeon 72.
Noble Body and Lotus Attacks
Her Ambrosial Arbor body combines her existing power with the regenerative properties of Abundance 68 69.
- Summons golden lotus thrones containing life-breath power to attack Jing Yuan and the Astral Express crew 68.
- Rains spirit flames and black lotus platforms indiscriminately over the Luofu to obstruct pursuit 69.
- Expects the Arbor’s regeneration to restore her from wounds given sufficient time 69.
- Remains unable to escape Jiang Yao, whose Unreachable Shore prevents her from leaving his internal space without permission 70.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Palm-leaf fan — An enormous fan used to withstand the Lightning-Lord’s attack and continue her apparent escape from the Luofu 69.
Relationships
- Nanook — Original patron. Phantylia serves as one of his Lord Ravagers but fears Destruction; once captured, she considers helping Jiang Yao kill him the safest course for herself 27 72.
- Jiang Yao — Initially an inconvenient escort assignment and intended victim; later her captor and master. He keeps her alive for her cooking and ingredient-refining abilities, while repeatedly threatening to eat her 28 61 71 74.
- Tingyun — The Foxian whose identity she assumes. The real Tingyun remains missing after the crisis; the provided account does not establish her fate 27 77 87.
- Yukong — Tingyun’s superior, whose assignments inadvertently place Phantylia beside Jiang Yao 27 28.
- Dan Shu — Leader of the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus and Phantylia’s contact for coordinating unrest around the Ambrosial Arbor 56.
- Jing Yuan — Opposing general. She attempts to exploit his plans and later escapes his pursuit, leaving him unaware that Jiang Yao has already swallowed her 56 69.
- Borisin — Subordinates she conquers and manages under Jiang Yao’s livestock-rearing plan, alternating punishment with rewards to make them stronger and healthier 122 123.
- Hoolay — A captive Borisin used as a recurring source of meat. Phantylia assists in refining and cooking his flesh 98 122 123.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Luofu Infiltration
A one-day delay in the Astral Express’s arrival gives Phantylia time to infiltrate the Sky-Faring Commission as Tingyun. She has already contacted the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus and positioned a Stellaron for the Ambrosial Arbor’s revival. Yukong then assigns her to guide Jiang Yao on an ingredient-shopping trip 27.
Jiang Yao’s insistence on visiting Aurum Alley and eating at Delicious Supreme delays her preparations. Although he recognizes her identity upon their meeting, he continues addressing her as Tingyun 28 29 82.
She subsequently considers sabotaging Himeko’s orbital weapon coordinates, but Jing Yuan’s insistence on supervising frustrates the opportunity. Instead, she coordinates with Dan Shu to seize the Arbor amid the unrest 53 56.
Failed Ambush and Noble Body
When Jing Yuan assigns “Tingyun” to protect Jiang Yao on his return to the Express, Phantylia sees an opportunity to capture him. Her attempt to turn him into a Voidranger fails; her attack damages his prized ingredients and triggers his fury 61 64.
She flees toward the Abyssal Reach and hastily releases the Destruction Legion’s agents to cause chaos. At the Mystic Root, she decides to create her Noble Body before departing because removing the Arbor prematurely would diminish its benefits 67 68.
Apparent Escape and Capture
Rather than fight Jing Yuan’s group, Phantylia flees with the Arbor, using indiscriminate attacks to obstruct pursuit. She survives the Lightning-Lord’s strike and believes she has escaped into space 69.
In reality, Jiang Yao has swallowed her. The apparently empty cosmos is inside him, and her efforts to flee are defeated by Unreachable Shore. Back at Cloudford, inherited memories allow her to identify him as Voracity; she begs for her life and offers to supply ingredients 69 70 71.
Forced Cooking Service
Jiang Yao makes Phantylia provide heat for Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, then discovers her ability to reconstruct flavors. Her usefulness secures her a continuing role as his unwilling assistant 72 73 74.
She later tries to put distance between herself and Jiang Yao, while insisting to herself that she is not attempting escape. He retrieves her with a tongue-like appendage and puts her to work refining and cooking Hoolay’s meat 96 98.
Borisin Management and Later Meals
By the Express’s departure from the Luofu, Jiang Yao has assigned Phantylia to raise captive Borisin. She successfully infiltrates their Beast Ship, subdues its occupants, and implements his program of punishment, rewards, and strengthening 105 122.
Jiang Yao praises her results and takes her to Asta’s private ship near Penacony to assist with another meal. She recognizes that his cooking benefits her own strength, though she still fears becoming food herself. Her improving coordination allows her to support the preparation of three dishes at once 123 125.
