Background / History

Jing Yuan rose from an ordinary soldier to the Luofu’s general, having fought creatures such as Shataan Birds on the battlefield before encountering them as cooking ingredients. Jingliu was his master, and Yanqing later became his own disciple 54 87 90.

He has occupied the general’s seat for hundreds of years. The loss of old friends, age, and accumulated political burdens have left him deeply tired; before discovering Jiang Yao’s food, he suspects that another major incident could push him into a mara-struck state 49 76.

His concern for the Luofu extends beyond the immediate crisis to its future leadership. He wants Fu Xuan prepared to succeed him and believes Yanqing needs a harsh trial to overcome his inexperience. Tingyun’s disappearance and his doubts about other rising talents further sharpen his succession worries 88 90.

Personality

Jing Yuan favors composure, diplomacy, and calculated risks. He dismisses the Marshal Hua rumors as harmless jokes when speaking to Welt, remains unmoved by Phantylia’s insults, and accepts responsibility for failing to stop her apparent escape. His outward ease does not eliminate his caution: he personally supervises Jiang Yao’s proposed orbital strike and keeps sensitive information out of the official account of the crisis 47 53 68 76 90.

Jiang Yao’s food repeatedly breaks that composure. On discovering that Entwined Fate suppresses mara, he nearly orders Aurum Alley sealed before realizing the action would expose his discovery. Later, he abandons dignity to plead for more stew, partly because its strengthening effects offer reassurance against his formidable former master 50 87.

His affection for Jingliu conflicts with his obligations as general. He hopes she can find happiness, but considers that sympathy a betrayal of the soldiers harmed by her crimes. This conflict reinforces his belief that he should prepare Fu Xuan to take over 88.

Abilities & Skills

Lightning-Lord

Jing Yuan can summon the Thunder-Clapping, Lightning-Flashing, Demon-Subduing, Evil-Eradicating Heavenly Lord of the Divine Firmament’s Thunder Palace, commonly called the Lightning-Lord, to deliver a powerful attack 41 69.

  • High-power interception: He summons it to try to halt Phantylia’s retreat from the Luofu 69.
  • Demonstrated limit: Phantylia uses an enormous palm-leaf fan to withstand the attack and continue escaping 69.
  • Not his preferred opening move: He had intended to delay its deployment, but the difficulty of stopping Phantylia forces him to use it early 69.

Military Command and Strategy

Jing Yuan has the final say over the Luofu’s affairs, although his decisions can still bring accountability afterward 56.

  • Baiting hidden enemies: He publicly concentrates Cloud Knights in Aurum Alley to provoke the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus into revealing themselves 55 56.
  • Testing a hypothesis: He deliberately selects semi-retired soldiers at risk of becoming mara-struck to investigate the benefits of Jiang Yao’s food 56.
  • Coordinating defenses: During Phantylia’s retreat, he activates the Matrix of Prescience while starskiff pilots harass her 69.
  • Continuity of command: Before pursuing the threat at Scalegorge Waterscape, he appoints Fu Xuan acting general in case he does not return 66.
  • Information limits: His Aurum Alley plan initially fails to account for a Lord Ravager being behind the conspiracy; Fu Xuan’s later warning identifies the Destruction Legion’s involvement 56 67.

Diplomacy and Information Management

Jing Yuan treats cooperation, secrecy, and negotiated support as practical tools of leadership 90 101 102.

  • Recruiting allies: He offers to revoke Dan Heng’s exile in exchange for helping resolve the crisis 67.
  • Separating public and confidential reports: He prepares an official account of Phantylia’s escape and a more detailed report for Marshal Hua, withholding Jiang Yao’s unusual abilities from the public version 90.
  • Negotiating healing support: He allows Jiang Yao to set the terms for cooperation rather than presenting a fixed demand 101.
  • Planning continued contact: He proposes sending Alliance personnel aboard the Astral Express to maintain communication and offer mutual assistance 102.

Relationships

  • Jiang Yao — Guest, benefactor, and strategically important partner. Jing Yuan’s interest shifts from curiosity about an unusual chef to protecting someone whose food can alleviate—and potentially cure—mara-struck illness. He supports Jiang Yao with ingredients, funding, and arrangements for wider distribution 48 50 66 101 102 105.
  • Fu Xuan — Trusted Diviner and intended successor. He relies on her readings, entrusts her with acting command, and knows that her master’s fate remains a source of anguish. Their cooperation includes frequent teasing and disagreements over his decisions 41 48 53 66 88.
  • Jingliu — Former master. Her return alarms him because of her strength and mara-struck condition, while his hope for her happiness conflicts with his duty to those harmed by her crimes 87 88.
  • Yanqing — Disciple. Jing Yuan regards him as promising but too inexperienced and believes difficult trials are necessary to temper him 90.
  • Dan Heng — Exiled returnee turned ally. Jing Yuan personally detains him during the lockdown, then recruits his help and promises to lift the ban. At the Mystic Root, he explicitly trusts Dan Heng to watch his back 66 67 68 88.
  • Yukong — Senior official who carries additional administrative responsibilities during his absence. Jing Yuan tells her why Jiang Yao matters and orders her to gather his remaining snacks as strategic resources 78 87.
  • Marshal Hua — Superior authority to whom he submits confidential reports and sends samples of Jiang Yao’s food through trusted subordinates 90 105.
  • Astral Express crew — Honored guests and crisis allies. He asks for their help against the Luofu’s enemies, thanks them for their assistance, and later invites them to explore the ship 66 68 87.
  • Phantylia — Enemy responsible for the Luofu conspiracy. Her disguise as Tingyun defeats his attempt to protect Jiang Yao, and her apparent escape with the Ambrosial Arbor leaves him suspicious of her true objective 61 69 77 90.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Aurum Alley and the Discovery of Mara Relief

  • After experiencing Entwined Fate’s effects, Jing Yuan realizes that Jiang Yao’s cooking can suppress mara and immediately recognizes its importance to the Alliance 50.
  • He approves using Himeko’s Heavenfall Fire to roast a Shataan Bird, but insists on supervising the operation. This prevents Phantylia from exploiting the weapon’s coordinates as she had hoped 53.
  • His mass deployment of Cloud Knights serves both as a test of the food’s effects and an attempt to draw the hidden conspirators into the open 55 56.

Uprising and Phantylia’s Pursuit

  • As the uprising spreads across the Luofu, Jing Yuan prepares to pursue a powerful figure heading toward Scalegorge Waterscape. He leaves Fu Xuan in command and orders her to protect Jiang Yao above all else, revealing the food’s ability to alleviate mara 66.
  • He secures the Astral Express crew’s assistance and turns Dan Heng’s return into an opportunity for cooperation. Fu Xuan subsequently warns him that the Destruction Legion has infiltrated the Luofu 66 67.
  • At the Mystic Root, he finds Phantylia completing a body fashioned from the revived Ambrosial Arbor. He coordinates with Dan Heng and the crew, expecting a dangerous confrontation 68.
  • Phantylia instead flees while launching indiscriminate attacks. Jing Yuan pursues her and deploys the Luofu’s defenses and Lightning-Lord, but concludes that she has escaped with the Arbor. Unbeknownst to him, Jiang Yao has already swallowed her 69.
  • With few civilian casualties, he redirects his attention to the remaining enemies and accepts blame for the apparent loss of the Arbor 69 76.

Jiang Yao’s Reported Death and the Aftermath

  • Fu Xuan reveals that the “Tingyun” assigned to Jiang Yao was Phantylia in disguise and fears Jiang Yao has died. Jing Yuan blames himself for placing him in her hands and heads to Cloudford 77.
  • Before leaving, he explains Jiang Yao’s significance to Yukong and orders the collection of his remaining snacks for research 78.
  • He finds Jiang Yao alive and eating with the Astral Express crew. After apologizing for his shocked reaction, he accepts a serving of Buddha Jumps Over the Wall 83.
  • During the recovery, he renews his promise to lift Dan Heng’s ban and assigns Fu Xuan to guide the visitors. The assignment also serves his private hope of bringing her closer to Jiang Yao 88.
  • He prepares separate official and confidential reports, fearing that disclosure of Jiang Yao’s abilities would invite political pressure and hostile attention 90.

Healing Agreement and Departure

  • At the Seat of Divine Foresight, Jiang Yao explains that his cooking may cure mara rather than merely ease it. Jing Yuan offers cooperation and invites him to name his conditions 101.
  • The demands are modest by the officials’ expectations: money and supplies for the Express, edible ingredients from every Xianzhou ship, and restrictions on who receives the food. Jing Yuan agrees and raises the need for lasting supply and contact arrangements 102.
  • During the crew’s remaining stay, Jing Yuan and Fu Xuan supply ingredients in unlimited quantities and attend regular meals. Jing Yuan also sends food to Marshal Hua as direct evidence of its effects 105.
  • He and Fu Xuan reluctantly watch Jiang Yao depart for Penacony with the Express 105.

Revelation of Jiang Yao’s Identity

  • Marshal Hua later arrives on the Luofu with all seven Arbiter-Generals and demands a full account of Jiang Yao’s actions 129.
