Ch. 121Selling an umbrella

Plot points and events

  • In Chengdu, Shi Feiyang tries to sell his Iron Umbrella, boasting that it can repel weapons, fire, water, and evil spirits. Passersby cannot lift it, and a crowd gathers to hear him explain why he cannot open it.
  • Sword Immortal Ling Hun sees Shi Feiyang entertaining the crowd and decides to take the umbrella, believing Shi is abusing mortals’ inability to handle an immortal treasure.
  • Ling Hun demands to buy it. Shi says the price is “your life,” explaining that the umbrella can save Ling Hun from an impending tribulation. Ling Hun dismisses the warning and tries to seize it by force.
  • Shi breaks Ling Hun’s sealing spell and flies into the sky. Ling Hun pursues him, attacking with his flying sword and thunder, but the umbrella blocks and disperses both.
  • Shi urges Ling Hun to heed the danger, then leaves. Ling Hun traps the area with his Five Elements Flag Gates, but Shi vanishes from the formation. Unable to find or recapture him, Ling Hun withdraws the gates and wonders how he escaped.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Feiyang appears playful and theatrical while selling the umbrella, but proves capable and composed in combat. He has come specifically to warn Ling Hun and appears to know that danger is near. He resists force without seeking to harm Ling Hun, then leaves when his warning is rejected.
  • Ling Hun is proud, quick to judge, and convinced that Shi is a cheeky junior. His irritation escalates into an attempted seizure and a full magical assault. Despite his confidence and powerful techniques, he is surprised by Shi’s skill and unable to contain him.
  • Their exchange shifts from a public dispute over a supposed sale to a battle between two powerful immortals. Shi tries to offer help; Ling Hun interprets his words as mockery and responds with aggression.

Significant themes

  • Pride versus humility: Ling Hun’s certainty prevents him from listening to a potentially life-saving warning.
  • Appearances and misjudgment: Shi’s comic sales pitch conceals both the umbrella’s true power and his serious purpose.
  • Power and restraint: Shi demonstrates superior defensive skill but does not retaliate in kind; Ling Hun’s forceful approach only deepens the conflict.
  • Fate and warning: Shi’s claim that Ling Hun’s tribulation is near introduces an unresolved threat that Ling Hun may be too proud to face.

Ch. 122Ling Hun

Chapter summary

  • Ling Hun’s estrangement from Ling Xuehong: Ling Hun has long disliked his brother-in-law, Bai Guyi. Years ago, he objected to Bai marrying his younger sister, but accepted her choice. The two men later argued repeatedly and nearly fought, so Ling Hun stopped seeing the couple.
  • Ling Xuehong’s impending death: Through divination, Ling Hun learns that his sister is about to die amid a demonic attack at Kaiyuan Temple. Master Youtan explains that her teacher, Nun Fentuo, foresaw this fate: Ling Xuehong is meant to undergo corpse-release ascension—allowing her body to be destroyed so her spirit can be reborn and progress spiritually. Though Ling Hun disagrees, he initially turns back, believing he must accept her chosen path.
  • Ling Hun’s growing turmoil: Ling Hun is already unsettled by his own coming tribulation and by a mysterious young umbrella seller he met in Chengdu. Unable to interpret his divination, he suspects the youth intends him harm. He prepares layered traps and magical defenses at his cave, convinced he can capture the stranger.
  • His resolve to see his sister: While waiting, Ling Hun hears an illusory cry from Ling Xuehong and remembers raising her after their parents died. Their shared childhood and years of roaming the martial world overcome his resolve to stay away. He sends out his primordial spirit to reach Kaiyuan Temple, planning to see her once before returning.
  • Bai Guyi seeks revenge: Ling Xuehong has already burned to ash in a massive demonic assault. Bai Guyi and Cui Wugu fought alongside Emei Sword Immortals but could not stop the attackers. Master Youtan eventually drives off the demons and sends Ling Xuehong’s spirit toward reincarnation. Grief-stricken, Bai blames Ling Hun for not being present to save his sister and goes to his cave to take revenge. He easily breaks through Ling Hun’s defenses, aided by his skill and intimate familiarity with Ling Hun’s methods.

Character developments and interactions

  • Ling Hun shifts from resentment and deliberate emotional distance to grief and renewed attachment. He understands the Buddhist reasoning behind his sister’s fate but cannot accept it emotionally. His confidence in his traps and judgment also highlights how his agitation is clouding his instincts.
  • Ling Xuehong is portrayed as fiercely independent: she chose Buddhist practice and Bai Guyi despite Ling Hun’s objections. Her death follows a spiritual course she and her teacher accepted, rather than a fate her brother can control.
  • Bai Guyi moves from a contentious brother-in-law to a bereaved husband consumed by anger. He sees Ling Hun’s absence as a betrayal of family duty.
  • Cui Wugu and Master Youtan help defend Kaiyuan Temple; afterward, Youtan carries out the spiritual instructions concerning Ling Xuehong.
  • The central interaction is the unresolved conflict between Ling Hun’s protective, familial love and Ling Xuehong’s independence, compounded by Bai Guyi’s belief that love required Ling Hun to intervene.

Significant themes

  • Family bonds versus personal choice: Ling Hun’s love for his sister conflicts with her right to choose her own path.
  • Different spiritual understandings of death: Buddhist selflessness and reincarnation contrast with Bai Guyi’s Daoist view that life’s affairs should be handled in the present.
  • Grief, guilt, and blame: Bai’s loss turns a long-standing family feud into an immediate threat.
  • Self-delusion and impending danger: Ling Hun’s troubled divination and misplaced confidence suggest that his fears—and his departure from the cave—may leave him vulnerable.

Ch. 123The mortal shell

Key plot points and events

  • Bai Guyi visits Ling Hun’s cave while Ling Hun’s spirit is away from his body. Believing Ling Hun is still there, Bai Guyi mutilates the body to prevent it from being restored, then flees east.
  • Shi Feiyang reveals that he had foreseen Ling Hun’s danger. He concealed the real cave and created a convincing illusion with a false body fashioned from a Great Pearl, tricking Bai Guyi into thinking he had destroyed Ling Hun’s body.
  • Cui Wugu discovers the deception and confirms that Ling Hun’s real body remains unharmed. She summons him back before he can confront Bai Guyi.
  • Ling Hun returns in a fury and attacks Shi Feiyang, but Cui Wugu intervenes and explains what happened. Ling Hun returns his spirit to his body, regains his composure, and thanks Shi Feiyang for saving his life.

Character developments and interactions

  • Ling Hun initially reacts with suspicion and rage, even briefly fearing his wife has betrayed him. His cultivation helps him master that suspicion; once he learns the truth, he recognizes Shi Feiyang’s kindness and apologizes through a formal show of gratitude.
  • Cui Wugu remains clear-headed amid the confusion. She investigates the apparent crime, recognizes Shi Feiyang’s intervention, protects him from Ling Hun’s attack, and brings the couple to an understanding.
  • Shi Feiyang acts discreetly to protect Ling Hun, using illusion and misdirection rather than direct confrontation. He calmly explains his actions and accepts the couple’s thanks.
  • Bai Guyi’s attack stems from accumulated resentment and a desire to destroy Ling Hun’s mortal shell. Afterward, he regrets the likely consequences and escapes rather than risk a fight.

Significant themes

  • Appearances and deception: Shi Feiyang’s illusion makes a false cave and body seem real, while Ling Hun’s anger initially makes him misread his wife’s actions.
  • Restraint and discernment: Cui Wugu’s investigation and Ling Hun’s effort to control suspicion prevent a misunderstanding from becoming a tragedy.
  • Gratitude and misjudgment: Ling Hun first treats his rescuer as an enemy, then acknowledges the life-saving deed once the facts are clear.
  • The importance of the body: Preserving Ling Hun’s mortal shell spares him the ordeal of finding another body or being reincarnated.

Ch. 124Azure Mirage Dragon (Bonus chapter in thanks to Alliance Leader Little Eagle)

Key plot points

  • Shi Feiyang explains how his Azure Mirage Bottle’s dragon-core illusion, refined with his understanding of the Seventy-Two Earthly Transformations, let him deceive Ling Hun and Bai Guyi. Their anxiety over Ling Xuehong’s fate also left them vulnerable.
  • Ling Hun apologizes for mistaking Shi’s rescue for hostility. The two men and Cui Wugu then spend months exchanging knowledge of magic, cultivation, and swordsmanship.
  • Deng Bagu returns with Xiong Manniang, Yuan Hua, Lin Han, and Yuan Hua’s two apes. She reports that she found Patriarch Lü’s hidden Hanxu Immortal Mansion, recovered its books, swords, and pills, and moved Zhu Zaiyu and his family there to cultivate.
  • Shi Feiyang bids farewell to Ling Hun and Cui Wugu and takes his disciples to Mangcang Mountain. They build cabins and practice in the forest; Shi tells Deng Bagu to wait before refining the Snow Soul Pearl.
  • After several months, Lin Han spots a young woman slowly ascending toward the Lingkong Heavenly Realm. Deng Bagu explains that the newly freed primordial spirit is weak and unprotected. Concerned, Lin Han asks Shi Feiyang to help her.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Feiyang shows both mastery and restraint: he explains the illusion without boasting, guides his disciples, and refuses to reveal the future location of a scripture Ling Hun is destined to find.
  • Ling Hun recognizes his error, apologizes sincerely, and comes to regard Shi as an unusually valuable teacher and fellow Daoist. Ling Hun and Cui Wugu are also astonished that the famously proud Deng Bagu has become Shi’s disciple, and that Xiong Manniang’s life has diverged from its expected course.
  • Deng Bagu proves capable and dependable by carrying out Shi’s complex instructions and gathering the younger disciples. Her history as a feared demon-cult figure contrasts with her respectful conduct as Shi’s student.
  • Lin Han displays compassion and eagerness to help by pleading for the vulnerable ascending woman.
  • The long exchange between Shi and the older couple is mutually enriching: their breadth of practical knowledge complements Shi’s deeper understanding of the Three Sovereigns’ righteous path.

Significant themes

  • Illusion and emotional vulnerability: Even powerful cultivators can be deceived when personal concerns cloud their judgment.
  • Fate and destiny: Xiong Manniang’s unexpected presence suggests that Shi’s influence is changing established destinies; Ling Hun’s future scripture must still be found naturally rather than forced.
  • Mentorship and the Dao: Knowledge flows in both directions, while Shi teaches that cultivation depends on the heart and can continue wherever one is.
  • Compassion and responsibility: Lin Han’s concern for an exposed soul points toward the chapter’s closing question of whether the group will intervene.

Ch. 125The Harmonious Bliss Lotus's Tragedy

Key plot points and events

  • Li Jingxu, an immensely powerful immortal who has delayed his ascension because of his attachments to the world, once gave Lu Min a cultivation method and a sword without formally accepting him as a disciple.
  • Lu Rongbo was conceived through a bizarre accident involving the Harmonious Bliss Lotus and a spiritual rock. Her father, Lu Min, mistakenly believed she had been seduced by Yang Li and nearly killed her. A talisman left by Li Jingxu saved her. After learning the truth, Lu Min left to reincarnate, and Rongbo continued cultivating alone.
  • Rongbo later gave birth to Shi Sheng and, fifteen years after his birth, reached the moment of her ascension. Shi Feiyang arranged for Lin Han to guard her, intending to take Shi Sheng as a disciple and settle related karmic obligations.
  • As Rongbo’s primordial spirit rose, Third Phoenix and Jinxu Nu of the South Sea’s Purple Cloud Palace attacked, hoping to seize her for labor refining the Divine Sand Passage. Lin Han intercepted their sword, but Third Phoenix’s Demon Sand threatened to overwhelm him and Rongbo.
  • Shi Feiyang had anticipated trouble and sent Yuan Hua with the Primordial Umbrella. Yuan Hua blocked the Demon Sand, protecting Rongbo. Recognizing him as the formidable Iron Umbrella Daoist, the attackers prepared their own weapons and treasures.

Character developments

  • Lu Rongbo is revealed as a resilient cultivator who survived family disgrace and years of solitary practice to reach ascension. At the crucial moment, she must rely on others because she cannot defend herself without endangering her spiritual ascent.
  • Lin Han acts with courage and integrity, protecting Rongbo despite being outmatched. His panic when the Demon Sand approaches shows how deeply he feels responsible for her safety.
  • Shi Feiyang shows strategic foresight: he arranged protection in advance and has a larger ambition to gather capable disciples and establish a sect.
  • Yuan Hua demonstrates the speed and confidence behind his reputation, using the Primordial Umbrella to turn the tide.
  • Third Phoenix and Jinxu Nu are introduced as coercive, aggressive figures who attack a vulnerable ascendant; the sight of Yuan Hua immediately makes them wary.

Significant themes

  • Attachment and ascension: Li Jingxu’s lingering bonds prevent his own ascent, while Rongbo’s ability to ascend depends on avoiding even a momentary renewed attachment to the world.
  • Compassion versus exploitation: Lin Han and Shi Feiyang protect Rongbo, while the Purple Cloud Palace pair seek to use her for their own work.
  • Fate, karma, and intervention: Li Jingxu’s earlier preparations save Rongbo, and Shi Feiyang’s plans connect Shi Sheng’s future discipleship to unresolved karma.
  • Vulnerability at moments of transformation: Rongbo is at her spiritual peak yet physically unable to defend herself, making the intervention of others decisive.

Character interactions

  • Lin Han respectfully reassures Rongbo, and her response shows growing trust in him.
  • Third Phoenix dismisses Lin Han as a “brat,” then attacks despite his intervention; Lin Han challenges her motives and fights to protect Rongbo.
  • When Lin Han cannot hold back the Demon Sand, he calls for Yuan Hua. Yuan Hua’s arrival protects Rongbo and forces the attackers to reassess the confrontation.

Ch. 126Shi Sheng

Key plot points and events

  • The chapter recounts Jinxu Nu’s history: once a merfolk spirit, he was sealed in a jar by Iron Umbrella Daoist after interrupting the Daoist’s attempt to catch the Nine-Headed Divine Ao. First Phoenix later rescued him, and they studied the Heavenly Book together. Jinxu Nu eventually transformed into a beautiful youth through cultivation.
  • Jinxu Nu and Iron Umbrella Daoist clashed again over the years, leaving Jinxu Nu and Third Phoenix deeply afraid of the Daoist and his umbrella.
  • In the present battle, Third Phoenix attacks Yuan Hua, who wields the Iron Umbrella. Jinxu Nu uses the Taiyi Purifying Fan, whose concealed wind can devastate demons, but Yuan Hua withstands it through his cultivation and the umbrella.
  • Deng Bagu, Xiong Manniang, and Lin Han engage Jinxu Nu and Third Phoenix. The latter’s Demon Fire and Demon Thunder overwhelm the less experienced Xiong Manniang and Lin Han, forcing them to retreat; Lin Han is repeatedly struck and driven into the mountains.
  • Shi Sheng, who had been told by his mother Lu Rongbo to remain in his cave, sees her endangered and rushes out to help. Jinxu Nu’s panicked counterattack wounds him and sends him falling, but Shi Feiyang’s two apes catch him. Shi Feiyang also seizes Jinxu Nu’s three weapons.
  • Mistaking Shi Feiyang for Iron Umbrella Daoist, Jinxu Nu and Third Phoenix try to flee. Jinxu Nu unleashes the fan again, but Shi Feiyang counters with the Nine Heavens Primordial Yang Ruler, then closes in and takes the fan. Disarmed, Jinxu Nu drops to his knees and begs for mercy.

Character developments and interactions

  • Jinxu Nu is revealed as powerful but psychologically dominated by his past persecution. His terror of Iron Umbrella Daoist makes him erratic and reckless, even though he has formidable cultivation and treasures.
  • Shi Sheng breaks his mother’s strict instruction for the first time, acting from love and alarm when he sees her in danger. His courage exceeds his abilities, and he is rescued by Shi Feiyang.
  • Shi Feiyang deliberately lets his new disciples face danger to train them, while intervening when Shi Sheng’s life is at stake. He ultimately defeats Jinxu Nu without killing him and questions his excessive fear.
  • Yuan Hua demonstrates how far his cultivation has progressed: rather than flee from a demon-refining wind he once would have feared, he uses the Iron Umbrella and his training to withstand it.
  • Third Phoenix fights fiercely alongside Jinxu Nu, while Lu Rongbo is protected by Yuan Hua’s umbrella. The disciples’ uneven skill becomes clear in their struggle against the pair.

Significant themes

  • Fear versus capability: Jinxu Nu’s terror undermines his strength, while Yuan Hua’s training allows him to confront a danger that once would have made him flee.
  • Training through adversity: Shi Feiyang uses a real battle to test his disciples, though he draws a line when Shi Sheng faces mortal danger.
  • Love and disobedience: Shi Sheng’s concern for his mother overrides her protective command.
  • The power of cultivation and treasured weapons: The battle emphasizes how spiritual discipline, magical artifacts, and sound judgment can shift the balance of a fight.

Ch. 127Jinxu Nu

Key plot points and events

  • Shi Feiyang reveals that Iron Umbrella Daoist is dead and the umbrella he carries was taken from someone else. He returns Jinxu Nu’s confiscated weapons, while warning him that his softheartedness and poor self-discipline may bring him further tribulations.
  • Jinxu Nu, impressed by Shi Feiyang’s power and bearing, asks for guidance. He then persuades Third Phoenix to withdraw her attacks and apologize, explaining that they have mistaken Shi Feiyang’s group for Iron Umbrella Daoist and his followers.
  • Shi Feiyang turns his attention to Lu Rongbo’s ascension. Using the Nine Heavens Primordial Yang Ruler, he surrounds her with purple qi and three golden flowers, protecting her as she rises safely into the Lingkong Immortal Realm.
  • Shi Sheng is near death from a wound inflicted by Jinxu Nu’s Bolo Knife, a demonic treasure whose poison is normally curable only by the distant Millennium Bitter Spring. Shi Feiyang treats him with a pill and the ruler’s golden flowers, drawing out the poisonous blood and saving him.
  • Shi Feiyang sends Lin Han and Deng Bagu to carry Shi Sheng and collect Lu Rongbo’s belongings from Dark Frost Cave. Jinxu Nu and Third Phoenix invite him to visit their South Sea home, the Purple Cloud Palace.

Character developments

  • Shi Feiyang demonstrates overwhelming skill, generosity, and composure. He offers Jinxu Nu moral counsel, ensures Lu Rongbo’s safe ascension, and heals Shi Sheng with ease.
  • Jinxu Nu shifts from a trembling opponent to a deferential student seeking instruction. He shows genuine remorse over Shi Sheng’s injury and hopes to earn Shi Feiyang’s favor.
  • Third Phoenix moves from desperate aggression to relief and respect once she learns the fight began through mistaken identities. She joins Jinxu Nu in honoring Shi Feiyang.
  • Lu Rongbo ascends successfully, deeply grateful for Shi Feiyang’s protection.
  • Shi Sheng, distraught at his mother’s departure and weakened by his wound, is rescued before the poison can kill him.

Significant themes

  • Self-discipline and inner obstacles: Shi Feiyang cautions that external treasures cannot overcome Jinxu Nu’s inner failings.
  • Mentorship and humility: The Purple Cloud Palace cultivators’ lack of guidance leaves them adrift, making them eager to learn from a true master.
  • Power used benevolently: Shi Feiyang’s immense ability is expressed through protection, healing, and instruction rather than domination.
  • Misunderstanding and reconciliation: A mistaken identity turns a confrontation into an opportunity for respect and renewed connection.

Character interactions

Shi Feiyang advises Jinxu Nu and returns his weapons; Jinxu Nu then brokers peace with Third Phoenix. Shi Feiyang protects Lu Rongbo during her farewell ascent, while Shi Sheng watches and grieves. Afterward, Shi Feiyang saves Shi Sheng, easing Jinxu Nu’s guilt and deepening his admiration. Third Phoenix and Jinxu Nu end by inviting Shi Feiyang to the Purple Cloud Palace.

Ch. 128Purple Cloud Palace

Plot points and events

  • Purple Cloud Palace’s history is recounted: built by the Heavenly One Golden Mother, later given to Elder Longbrow, and eventually inhabited by Huizhu and the three Phoenix sisters. Their past-life connection to the palace helped them recover its treasures and scriptures.
  • The sisters’ inheritance is incomplete. The Purple Palace Manual flew away, while the Earthly Palace Golden Canon revealed itself only partly to most of them. Their other major text, the Heavenly Demon Secret Manual, contains powerful but dangerous spells.
  • First Phoenix has hoped for a true master to guide them. When Jinxu Nu and Third Phoenix return with Shi Feiyang, whose abilities both praise, she welcomes him and his disciples into the palace.
  • Shi Feiyang has come to obtain selected things, not seize the palace. He plans to undergo his coming tribulation in the safer Bright Realm, and avoids taking the palace because doing so would bring needless karmic entanglements. He has also unknowingly helped avert earlier events that would have drawn the palace into conflict.
  • At a lavish banquet, the palace hosts ask Shi Feiyang for guidance. He answers their cultivation questions, especially identifying flaws in Jinxu Nu’s and Third Phoenix’s practices.
  • Shi Feiyang warns Third Phoenix that her selfish, uncompassionate temperament prevents her from mastering certain demonic arts. He urges self-reflection and warns that failure to change could leave her unable to progress and in grave danger at her coming tribulation.
  • The hosts realize the five-hundred-year tribulation is near: 450 years have passed, and their divinations predict dreadful fates for five of the six, with Huizhu the exception.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Feiyang shows strength without aggression, choosing diplomacy over conquest. His patient, practical instruction earns the hosts’ respect.
  • First Phoenix moves from cautious hope to confidence in Shi Feiyang and treats him as a respected elder.
  • Jinxu Nu, long troubled by the dangers in his unorthodox training, is deeply moved by Shi Feiyang’s clear, compassionate guidance and responds with tears and repeated kowtows.
  • Third Phoenix initially resists criticism, then recognizes that Shi Feiyang has exposed the personal flaw behind her stalled cultivation. His warning makes her confront both her temperament and her future danger.
  • Er Feng remains easygoing, with little interest in questioning Shi Feiyang; she enjoys the banquet.
  • Huizhu also receives answers to her questions, while the gathered hosts’ anxiety rises when Shi Feiyang mentions the approaching tribulation.

Significant themes

  • Guidance and self-knowledge: Technical skill alone cannot overcome flaws of character; cultivation requires understanding oneself and others.
  • Compassion and empathy: Third Phoenix’s inability to share others’ feelings directly limits her spiritual abilities.
  • Karma and restraint: Shi Feiyang avoids taking the palace because possession would bring obligations and consequences that outweigh its value.
  • The danger of incomplete or crooked teachings: The palace’s powerful manuals offer potential, but without proper guidance they can carry hidden risks.
  • Fate and impending trial: The approaching tribulation casts uncertainty over the hosts’ future and makes Shi Feiyang’s counsel especially urgent.

Ch. 129Loyal Hound

Key events

  • Shi Feiyang observes his disciples and the six women of Purple Cloud Palace. His older disciples focus on cultivation, while the younger ones—especially Lin Han and Shi Sheng—learn quickly even as they play.
  • Jinxu Nu visits Shi Feiyang regularly for instruction, bringing gifts and behaving with deep humility. When Shi Feiyang offers to teach him how to survive the Final Kalpa in exchange for his Taiyi Purifying Fan, Jinxu Nu offers it without hesitation.
  • Moved by Jinxu Nu’s trust, Shi Feiyang instead accepts him as a disciple and promises to help him survive the coming tribulation. He tells Jinxu Nu to stop calling himself a “lowly beast” and to carry himself with dignity.
  • Though devoted to Shi Feiyang, Jinxu Nu still hopes to save First Phoenix from the demonic path she is pursuing. He leaves Purple Cloud Palace to study demon-subduing arts, believing he can return and rescue her when her calamity arrives.
  • Shi Feiyang introduces Jinxu Nu to his other disciples and overhauls his cultivation methods and treasure-refining techniques. Jinxu Nu makes rapid progress.
  • Er Feng asks to join Shi Feiyang, but admits she cannot leave the palace or her sisters, so the possibility comes to nothing.
  • Third Phoenix and Shao Dongxiu, having heard of Shi Feiyang’s guidance, seek his help. He explains that Third Phoenix’s demonic methods conflict with her demon-subduing Radiant Jade Ruler, impairing her and risking spiritual harm. He offers to trade her a demonic treasure—the Crow-Venom Thorn—for it.

Character developments and interactions

  • Jinxu Nu moves from abject dependence toward the self-respect Shi Feiyang urges him to develop. His loyalty shifts to a new master, but his concern for First Phoenix remains.
  • Shi Feiyang shows both authority and compassion: he refuses to exploit Jinxu Nu’s willingness to surrender his greatest treasure, accepts him instead, and carefully improves his disciple’s cultivation.
  • First Phoenix supports Jinxu Nu’s new discipleship and celebrates him, though she is somewhat envious. Er Feng loves her husband and wants to follow him, but her attachment to her home and sisters holds her back.
  • Third Phoenix and Dongxiu, previously hostile toward Jinxu Nu, are pleased when he leaves. Later, Third Phoenix’s reliance on an ill-suited treasure brings her into a new exchange with Shi Feiyang.

Significant themes

  • Loyalty and gratitude: Jinxu Nu’s lifelong devotion grows from kindness received, first from his former master and later from First Phoenix and Shi Feiyang.
  • Self-worth and discipleship: Shi Feiyang treats Jinxu Nu’s self-abasement as a flaw and teaches him that loyalty need not mean humiliation.
  • Leaving comfort for growth: Jinxu Nu is willing to abandon the palace for a chance to advance and eventually save First Phoenix; Er Feng’s inability to leave highlights the pull of familiar bonds.
  • Compatibility in cultivation: The Radiant Jade Ruler demonstrates that a powerful treasure can be dangerous when its nature conflicts with its wielder’s path.

Ch. 130Zhoutian Divine Talisman

Plot points and events

  • Third Phoenix exchanges the Radiant Jade Ruler for Shi Feiyang’s Crow-Venom Thorn. Although the Ruler is inherently the superior treasure, the Thorn suits her demonic cultivation and proves devastating in practice: it flies at her will, burns, burrows into targets, and carries poison and curses. She quickly masters it and damages Shao Dongxiu’s sword during a test.
  • Seeing the Thorn’s effectiveness, Shao Dongxiu trades her Dragon Sparrow Ring for a refined Immortal Sword that suits her far better. Shi Feiyang then gives the Ring to Xiong Manniang, teaching her how to refine it properly and hoping it will protect her from future dangers.
  • First Phoenix, concerned about her approaching five-hundred-year tribulation, asks Shi Feiyang for guidance. He warns that the Heavenly Demon Secret Manual has fostered inner demons and encouraged a cycle of violence and growing enemies. He advises her to destroy it, stop making enemies, and remain within the palace for fifty years.
  • First Phoenix cannot bear to abandon either the manual or her palace. As an alternative, Shi Feiyang spends one hundred days making her a Zhoutian Divine Talisman. It strengthens and steadies her, and creates a protective barrier against demons. Shi Feiyang stresses that it cannot save her if she continues acting recklessly.
  • First Phoenix offers Shi Feiyang and his companions anything in the palace as thanks. Shi Sheng asks for a talisman too, but Shi Feiyang explains that the innocent child does not need one; he plans to teach him the way of the Three Sovereigns instead.

Character developments and interactions

  • Third Phoenix is delighted by a treasure that matches her abilities, valuing practical usefulness over the Radiant Jade Ruler’s greater inherent power. She keeps the Thorn’s nature and techniques secret.
  • Shao Dongxiu moves from regretting her weak, poorly used Ring to eagerly accepting a sword better suited to her. Her exchange with Shi Feiyang is swift, and her public display of the sword wins admiration.
  • Xiong Manniang receives her first significant magical treasure from Shi Feiyang, who considers both her safety and the protection her ties to Luo Ziyan may afford.
  • First Phoenix seeks a way to survive her tribulation but resists the sacrifices Shi Feiyang recommends. She accepts the talisman, yet her safety still depends on whether she can restrain herself and change course.
  • Shi Feiyang acts as mentor and arbiter, matching treasures to their users while warning that magical protection cannot replace self-discipline. His exchange with First Phoenix also contrasts her fear of enemies with his argument that her own choices helped create them.

Significant themes

  • A treasure’s worth depends on its wielder: superior artifacts may be useless to someone who cannot use them or whose cultivation does not suit them.
  • Choices create consequences: demonic practice and aggression draw inner and outer threats into a self-reinforcing cycle.
  • Protection is not a substitute for discipline: the talisman can ward off demons, but cannot overcome continued recklessness.
  • Self-reliance and spiritual cultivation: Shi Feiyang distinguishes true mastery over demons from dependence on protective objects, especially in his advice to Shi Sheng.

Ch. 131Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain

Key plot points and events

  • Shi Feiyang asks Chufeng for the Heavenly One True Water and its refining method. She gives him all that remains, though she warns that refining even a small amount requires immense effort. He also takes several ancient spiritual herbs, which he transplants into the Heavenly Book Jade Casket.
  • After staying at Purple Cloud Palace until the winter solstice, Shi Feiyang leads his disciples south to Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain. He explains the mountain’s three defenses and chooses a rare opening that appears at midnight on the winter solstice.
  • The group passes the barriers in sequence: Shi Feiyang parts the outer magnetic mist with the Nine Heavens Primordial Yang Ruler, opens the aurora-fire wall with the Dongling Zither, and crosses the inner chaos essence using two cores that he secretly reveals he has refined.
  • Inside, they discover a vast, perpetually illuminated realm of fragrant seas, crystalline shores, jade-like mountains, and abundant spiritual treasures. Shi Feiyang declares that they will claim the entire mountain as their domain—not merely build a secluded residence there.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chufeng shows trust and generosity by handing over the True Water and urging Shi Feiyang to take more treasures. He accepts only what he wants.
  • Shi Feiyang displays extensive knowledge, careful planning, and command of powerful techniques as he guides his disciples safely through the barriers. His ambitions expand into a vision of founding a nation and transmitting a governing Way.
  • Deng Bagu remains observant and notices that Shi Feiyang has refined two inner cores, a striking and unexplained revelation.
  • Lin Han, Shi Sheng, and the other disciples are awed by the perilous passage and the realm’s beauty. Their excited questions meet Shi Feiyang’s bold declaration that the whole domain will belong to them.

Significant themes

  • Trust and stewardship: Chufeng gives freely, while Shi Feiyang takes only what he can use and places the herbs in the disciples’ care.
  • Knowledge and preparation: Understanding the mountain’s cycles and barriers makes a seemingly impossible journey passable.
  • Cultivation as governance: Shi Feiyang rejects secluded cultivation and reliance on gods in favor of the Three Sovereigns’ ideal: self-cultivation and governing are one.
  • Recovering the Way’s roots: The chapter argues that later traditions have lost or distorted their origins, and that understanding the past is essential to shaping the present.
  • Ambition and founding: Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain becomes the setting for Shi Feiyang’s plan to establish a Nation of Ten Thousand Demons and become a sage king and teacher.

Ch. 132A Dragon's Roar over the Azure Sea

Key plot points and events

  • Shi Feiyang reaches Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain, a spirit-rich realm divided between Evernight City on the eastern continent and a beast-dominated western continent. The Ten-Thousand-Year Cold Xian rules the latter after manipulating rival demons into destroying one another.
  • Shi Feiyang chooses a scenic coastal bay as a base for himself and his disciples. While most quickly establish caves and refine treasures, Lin Han and Shi Sheng slowly carve out a home by hand, turning the work into a playful project.
  • Shi Feiyang releases several demons who have spent years inside Yu’s Cauldron. To prove that he was once a dragon, he transforms from human into a huge, winged black dragon. His former attendants rejoice, while the three Azure Flood Dragons are intimidated.
  • After chastising the demons for neglecting their cultivation, Shi Feiyang explains that human and dragon are not fundamentally different. He challenges Jinxu Nu to stop seeing himself as inferior.
  • Knowing the Cold Xian is watching, Shi Feiyang roars a challenge toward its stronghold. He then orders his followers back to their training and prepares defenses, planning a group attack once their treasures are ready. The Cold Xian’s nine incarnations make a thorough defeat difficult.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Feiyang reveals the scale of his power and the unusual connection between his human and dragon forms. He acts both as an awe-inspiring leader and a demanding teacher, encouraging discipline and self-respect.
  • Jinxu Nu accepts Shi Feiyang’s lesson that his transformed state does not make him lesser, resolving to correct his self-deprecating outlook.
  • Red Snake and Black Tortoise are delighted to see their dragon king again; Divine Gun and Carved Crane, initially skeptical, quickly pay homage after witnessing his transformation.
  • The Azure Flood Dragons comically mistake Shi Feiyang for a demon and then nervously retract their words when confronted.
  • Lin Han and Shi Sheng show contrasting but compatible temperaments: Lin treats the difficult excavation as self-discipline, while Shi Sheng enjoys it and directs the cave’s whimsical carvings. Shi Sheng’s childlike curiosity about Shi Feiyang’s horns and whiskers adds warmth to the scene.

Significant themes

  • Identity beyond outward form: Shi Feiyang’s human and dragon bodies are presented as different expressions of the same being.
  • Self-respect as a path to strength: Shi Feiyang argues that self-belittlement becomes an obstacle to cultivation and flourishing.
  • Discipline and responsibility: He warns that his followers cannot rely on him if they neglect their training.
  • Preparation and cooperation: Rather than attack the powerful Cold Xian recklessly, Shi Feiyang prepares his group and defenses for a coordinated hunt.

Ch. 133The Ten-Thousand-Year Cold Xian

  • Shi Feiyang defeats the Ancient Poison Dragon: A nearly ten-thousand-year-old poison dragon attacks Shi Feiyang, hoping to seize his inner cores and use their power against the Ten-Thousand-Year Cold Xian. Shi Feiyang’s cores overwhelm the dragon’s storm and lightning, draw in his Purple Lightning Dragon Pearl, and seal it. A Divine Fire Inner Core then blasts the dragon into the sea. The brief fight impresses Shi Sheng, who asks to learn how to become a dragon; Shi Feiyang says he may be the only one of his disciples capable of it and urges everyone to keep cultivating for a future battle.
  • Shi Feiyang’s larger plan: He recognizes that many powerful demons nearby could become useful followers. Rather than kill them, he intends to subdue the promising ones and eventually gather them together after he finishes refining four treasures from the Lesser Purity Immortal Mansion.
  • The defeated dragon seeks allies: The dragon, Long Meng, goes to Wu Longzi, a venomous Primordial Oddity, and asks for help recovering his pearl and taking revenge. Wu Longzi argues that their greater danger is the Cold Xian, who has already defeated their former alliance and devoured several of its members. He proposes using Shi Feiyang and the Cold Xian against each other.
  • Wu Longzi’s scheme: Wu Longzi plans to approach the Cold Xian and exploit her predatory mating habits. He claims he can implant millions of offspring inside her, drain her life-bound qi, and ultimately make her his puppet. To protect themselves from her poison, he and Long Meng plan to take medicinal parts from the Heavenly Abode Jade Lotus growing beside her palace. Long Meng agrees, driven by fear and his need to reclaim his pearl.
  • The Cold Xian’s introduction: The pair arrive at her palace while she is consuming nine male victims after draining their vital essence. She is depicted as a grotesque, immensely powerful creature whose appetite and cruelty make Wu Longzi’s plan especially dangerous.
Character developments and interactions: Shi Feiyang demonstrates overwhelming power and strategic restraint, treating the dragon’s attack as a minor interruption while thinking ahead to ruling the demons. Long Meng shifts from aggression to desperation and accepts a perilous alliance. Wu Longzi emerges as cunning and ruthless, persuading Long Meng through a plan that is as ambitious as it is horrifying. Shi Sheng’s admiration for his master offers a brief, lighter contrast to the chapter’s violence.
Significant themes: Power can turn enemies into potential followers; survival encourages alliances built on self-interest; and schemes to control a stronger predator may expose their creators to even greater danger. The chapter also contrasts disciplined cultivation and strategy with the Cold Xian’s brutal, consuming nature.

Ch. 134A Sword Planted at the Mouth of Three Rivers

Plot and key events

  • The Cold Xian tries for eight days and nights to drain the primordial yang of Long Meng and Wu Longzi, but both demons resist. She releases them, intending to harvest their essence later and eventually eat Long Meng first, since he has lost his dragon pearl.
  • Long Meng and Wu Longzi tell her about the newly arrived Black Dragon, Shi Feiyang. Using a Heavenly Palace Treasure Mirror, the Cold Xian spies on his group, but primordial purple qi shields the caves.
  • Underwater, she spots Divine Gun and becomes fixated on his powerful, vigorous body. She enters his Niwan Palace as a spirit and tries to seize control of him, threatening to extract his primordial spirit and devour his body.
  • Divine Gun resists by binding his qi and blood to his primordial spirit, drawing on what he learned from Yu the Great’s seal and Shi Feiyang’s instruction. He tells his companions to seek help.
  • Red Snake and Black Tortoise, meanwhile, argue with Divine Gun over whose cave should occupy the central position. Red Snake ultimately leaves to summon Shi Feiyang, while Black Tortoise stays behind.

Character developments and interactions

  • The Cold Xian is revealed as a predatory, calculating demon who prizes her victims according to their usefulness. Her interest shifts from Long Meng to Divine Gun once she sees his strength.
  • Divine Gun is powerful but recognizes the vast gap between himself and the Cold Xian. Rather than surrender, he relies on discipline and hard-won knowledge to endure her assault.
  • Red Snake is sharp-tongued and confident, openly challenging Divine Gun despite his greater age and cultivation. Their quarrel exposes competing ideas of status: Divine Gun claims closeness as Shi Feiyang’s disciple, while Red Snake emphasizes loyalty and service to their king.
  • Black Tortoise acts as a cautious observer, noticing the strange green tint in the water and helping identify the danger.
  • Long Meng and Wu Longzi remain wary captives, resisting the Cold Xian even while giving her information about Shi Feiyang’s party.

Significant themes

  • Predation and resistance: The Cold Xian treats others as sources of essence, but Divine Gun’s resistance prevents her from easily taking what she wants.
  • Hierarchy and loyalty: The dispute over the cave positions shows tension between rank, age, discipleship, and faithful service.
  • Knowledge as survival: Divine Gun’s past experience and Shi Feiyang’s teaching give him a means to withstand a foe with far greater power.
  • A threat closing in: The Cold Xian’s surveillance and attack reveal that Shi Feiyang’s companions are already in danger, setting up a confrontation.

Ch. 135The Heavenly Heart Ring

Key plot points and events

  • Lin Han uses Yu’s Cauldron to pull Divine Gun, possessed by one of Cold Xian’s avatars, from the seabed and brings him to Shi Feiyang.
  • Shi Feiyang traps Cold Xian’s primordial spirit with the newly refined Heavenly Heart Ring, a treasure designed to subdue spirits and demons. He treats Divine Gun and the other poisoned companions, though the poison will take time to clear.
  • Cold Xian remains unaware that her avatar has been captured. At her stronghold, she continues draining Wu Longzi and Long Meng for vital essence, then summons and consumes six other victims.
  • Wu Longzi and Long Meng suspect something went wrong when Cold Xian’s avatar failed to return. Cold Xian orders them to locate the elusive Black Dragon and find a way past the purple vapor shielding the caves.
  • Unable to confront Cold Xian or flee safely, the two demons discuss seeking an alliance with the Black Dragon. Long Meng resents him for taking his Dragon Pearl, while Wu Longzi blames Long Meng for provoking him.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Feiyang demonstrates foresight and control: he anticipated the threat, prepared the Heavenly Heart Ring, captures Cold Xian’s spirit, and cares for the poisoned survivors.
  • Lin Han acts decisively on his master’s instructions, rescuing Divine Gun with the cauldron.
  • Cold Xian remains cruel and domineering, exploiting and consuming others. Her confidence is shaken by the unexplained failure of her avatar and her inability to see into Shi Feiyang’s caves.
  • Wu Longzi and Long Meng are weakened and trapped under Cold Xian’s control. Their conversation reveals fear, mutual blame, and a possible shift toward cooperation with their former enemy.
  • The victims’ interactions with Cold Xian are entirely coercive; Wu Longzi and Long Meng endure her demands while trying to preserve their remaining strength.

Significant themes

  • Preparedness versus overconfidence: Shi Feiyang’s specialized treasure defeats Cold Xian’s avatar, while Cold Xian’s certainty in her own power leaves her unable to explain the setback.
  • Coercion and exploitation: Cold Xian treats other beings as sources of energy and food, turning power into a means of domination.
  • Rivalry giving way to necessity: Wu Longzi and Long Meng consider joining forces with the Black Dragon despite their grievances.
  • Protection and recovery: Shi Feiyang’s response contrasts with Cold Xian’s predation, emphasizing care for allies and patient restoration.

Ch. 136Luring Out the Monster

Plot points and events

  • Wu Longzi and Long Meng debate seeking Shi Feiyang’s protection. They visit the Black Dragon King, who agrees to consider them only if they prove their loyalty by luring two of the Cold Xian’s Primordial Spirit incarnations to him.
  • Wu Longzi secretly intends to play both sides. He and Long Meng plan to provoke the Cold Xian and Black Dragon into fighting, then kill and consume both weakened rivals. They also hope to destroy Qian Kang’s family and seize Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain.
  • The Cold Xian confirms through her Heavenly Palace Treasure Mirror that the Black Dragon is real. Wu Longzi falsely explains that the dragon’s elixir qi is shielding his followers from her poison, persuading her to attack.
  • The Cold Xian gathers more than a hundred humans and demons under her control, selecting a group to accompany her. She sends Wu Longzi and Long Meng ahead to destroy the Black Dragon’s mountain home and force him out.
  • The demons hesitate, but, threatened by the Cold Xian, they attack the two outer peaks. Their blasts devastate both mountains. When ordered to strike the central peak, they comply, and Shi Feiyang emerges as a massive black dragon, scattering their attacks with water-and-fire elixir qi.
  • Wu Longzi and Long Meng retreat and announce that the Black Dragon has appeared. The Cold Xian arrives in four identical, seductive manifestations, ready to confront him.

Character developments and interactions

  • Wu Longzi is revealed as a calculating opportunist: he feigns loyalty to each side while trying to arrange their mutual destruction. Though initially impressed by the Black Dragon, he later doubts his strength.
  • Long Meng is more fearful and less inventive than Wu Longzi. He follows his companion’s plans, but the prospect of gaining immense power revives his hopes.
  • Shi Feiyang shows restraint until his home is attacked; then he emerges in dragon form and decisively repels the assault.
  • The Cold Xian is confident and predatory, treating her poisoned captives as food and underestimating both the Black Dragon and Wu Longzi. Her control over her victims mixes coercion with enchantment and desire.
  • The demons’ double-dealing puts them in danger from both sides. Their attack also serves as a warning to Shi Feiyang’s followers, who are ready to fight the Cold Xian but wait in vain for her to appear.

Significant themes

  • Self-interest and betrayal: Wu Longzi and Long Meng seek advantage rather than genuine allegiance, while the Cold Xian manipulates her followers for her own purposes.
  • Power and misjudgment: Both Wu Longzi and the Cold Xian underestimate Shi Feiyang, setting the stage for a potentially dangerous confrontation.
  • Coercion and corrupted desire: The Cold Xian’s poison and beauty blur the line between willing devotion and enslavement.
  • Escalating conflict: Deception and intimidation push the rivals toward open battle, even as the demons attempt to profit from the chaos.

Ch. 137Green Mist, Purple Qi

Key plot points and events

  • Cold Xian confronts Shi Feiyang’s Black Dragon form with four of her nine avatars, unleashing overwhelming water-and-fire magic. Her power far exceeds that of any cultivator he has encountered, and he can only just hold her off.
  • Having tested her strength, Shi Feiyang retreats toward his mountain, protected by a mysterious purple qi that keeps her poisonous mist at bay. Cold Xian tries to flood the cave and destroy the mountain, but the purple qi protects both.
  • Cold Xian sends all four avatars into the cave to break through the barrier. Shi Feiyang reveals that the apparent cave is a trap: the avatars have entered Yu’s Cauldron, where he seals them in and subjects them to its thunderclouds and Nine Heavens Tribulation Thunder.
  • Shi Feiyang explains that he deliberately feigned weakness and used illusions and spatial spells to lure Cold Xian inside. His aim was to capture her avatars before they could escape and cause future trouble.
  • With four more avatars cut off, Cold Xian’s true body panics but fears risking her remaining four. She summons Wu Longzi and the others back instead.
  • The other demons and Taoists, confused by the restored peaks and unwilling to investigate, eagerly accept the summons and leave.

Character developments

  • Shi Feiyang proves far more capable than his apparent magical strength suggests. He relies on patience, deception, and strategic use of rare treasures rather than trying to overpower Cold Xian directly.
  • Cold Xian shifts from confidence and predatory excitement to frustration, desperation, and fear. Despite her immense power, she cannot overcome Shi Feiyang’s protections and is cautious once several of her avatars vanish.
  • Wu Longzi and the assembled followers show confusion and reluctance. None is willing to risk exploring the mysterious scene.

Significant themes

  • Strategy over raw power: Shi Feiyang wins by exploiting Cold Xian’s impatience and luring her into a prepared trap.
  • Deception and appearances: Illusions make destroyed peaks appear restored, while the supposed cave is actually Yu’s Cauldron.
  • Limits of magical strength: Cold Xian’s enormous power is checked by specialized protections and treasures.
  • Fear and self-preservation: Cold Xian and the assembled group both hesitate to face an uncertain danger.

Character interactions

  • Cold Xian and Shi Feiyang engage in a contest of force and will: she presses her poison and elixir qi against his defenses, while he deliberately invites her deeper into the trap.
  • Once captured, Cold Xian’s avatars try to escape the cauldron’s thunder, while Shi Feiyang closes the trap and reveals his plan.
  • Cold Xian’s messengers recall Wu Longzi and the others; their relief at being summoned away outweighs their curiosity about what happened.

Ch. 138Two Difficulties

Key plot points and events

  • After losing four primordial spirits to Shi Feiyang, the Ten-Thousand-Year Cold Xian retreats into gluttony and cruelty, feeding on captives while avoiding further confrontation with the black dragon.
  • Shi Feiyang’s side enjoys a period of calm. He spends about a hundred days refining powerful treasures, adapting several from the Three Pure Ones’ tradition so their original owners cannot easily reclaim or use them.
  • Jiang Dachuan arrives seeking refuge. His life has taken him from shipwreck and near-death escapes to service under the Purple Cloud Palace’s disciples, then captivity under Gang Chen, from whom he escaped with a magical pestle and a tablet tied to his spirit.
  • The Cold Xian later captured and repeatedly drained Jiang. Although her influence leaves him both magically controlled and perversely drawn to her conjured women, he fears that once his primordial yang is exhausted she will eat him.
  • Shi Feiyang gives Jiang an elixir to suppress the Cold Xian’s poisonous influence and orders Jinxu Nu to conceal Jiang’s primordial spirit. He also asks Jiang to document the defenses and inhabitants of the Cold Xian’s territory.
  • Using Jiang’s information to improve his divinations, Shi Feiyang prepares to seize the Bright Realm. He plans to kill the Cold Xian in one coordinated strike, preventing any of her four remaining primordial spirits from escaping while preserving the valuable immortal palace and its surroundings.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Feiyang is methodical and strategic: he alters captured treasures, protects Jiang, and gathers intelligence before acting. His ambition extends beyond defeating the Cold Xian to taking full control of her domain.
  • The Cold Xian has become more fearful and vicious after her defeat. Her four remaining primordial spirits—especially her near-immortal original—make her dangerous even while she keeps to herself.
  • Jiang Dachuan is a resourceful survivor, skilled at adapting, bargaining, and escaping danger. He arrives wary of Shi Feiyang but accepts his protection and agrees to provide intelligence.
  • Jinxu Nu helps bridge the encounter, having spotted Jiang and brought him to Shi Feiyang. He supports Shi’s plan and assists in sheltering the newcomer.
  • Their interaction highlights Shi Feiyang’s cautious leadership: he does not simply trust Jiang, but protects him and turns his knowledge into a strategic advantage.

Significant themes

  • Survival through adaptability: Jiang repeatedly escapes death through quick thinking and practical ingenuity.
  • Power and preparation: Shi Feiyang’s success depends not just on strength, but on refining tools, gathering intelligence, and coordinating his disciples.
  • The danger of incomplete victory: The Cold Xian’s surviving spirits could restore her power if even one escapes, making containment as important as defeating her.
  • Restraint and preservation: Shi Feiyang’s plan must balance eliminating a threat with avoiding damage to the ancient immortal landscape he hopes to claim.

Ch. 139Three Battles with Cold Xian

Key plot points and events

  • Shi Feiyang sends Jiang Dachuan back to Cold Xian with a pill and a Zhoutian Divine Talisman, promising he will escape safely. The pill contains poison from an ancient Immortal’s Couch.
  • Cold Xian eagerly draws Jiang in, but after he activates the talisman, it carries him away. The poison takes effect, leaving her physical body unconscious.
  • Cold Xian ejects four lucid primordial-spirit manifestations from her poisoned body and blames Black Dragon for the scheme.
  • Shi Feiyang confronts her and offers her a chance to surrender and eventually reform. She refuses and attacks, beginning a fierce battle between her elixir qi and his Three Suns One Qi Sword and Nine Heavens Primordial Yang Ruler.
  • Shi Sheng and Lin Han enter through the earth, evade the sealed ground, and use their swords to carve up Cold Xian’s unconscious body. When her spirits attack them, Shi Sheng pulls them both safely underground.
  • Shi Feiyang escalates the fight with the Dongling Zither and its Guanghan Formation-Breaking Melody, which overwhelms nearby spirit creatures and shakes Cold Xian’s spirits.
  • Realizing she is losing and that her body and lair are no longer safe, Cold Xian forces open the purple-qi barrier and flees in four directions as streaks of green light.

Character developments and interactions

  • Jiang Dachuan acts despite his fear, returning to Cold Xian and enduring her assault long enough to activate his escape talisman. His survival depends on Shi Feiyang’s preparation.
  • Shi Feiyang shows both strategic cunning and confidence: he uses Jiang as bait to poison Cold Xian, offers her a path to redemption, then fights decisively when she attacks.
  • Cold Xian shifts from predatory control to desperation. Poisoned and deprived of her body, she becomes wary of Shi Feiyang’s power and ultimately chooses flight over continued combat.
  • Shi Sheng and Lin Han work closely as a pair, entering together, attacking Cold Xian’s body, and escaping her counterattack through Shi Sheng’s earth-travel ability.
  • Jinxu Nu reassures and urges Jiang to obey Shi Feiyang, reinforcing the group’s trust in their leader.

Significant themes

  • Strategy over brute force: Shi Feiyang defeats Cold Xian through preparation, poison, talismans, and coordinated allies rather than relying on a single attack.
  • Power and vulnerability: Cold Xian’s formidable magic cannot protect her from an unexpected poison or the loss of her physical body.
  • Trust and cooperation: Jiang follows a dangerous plan, while Shi Sheng and Lin Han’s teamwork helps exploit Cold Xian’s weakness.
  • Reform versus evil: Shi Feiyang offers Cold Xian a chance to abandon her destructive nature, but she rejects it and continues fighting.

Ch. 140Heaven-and-Earth Purifying Ring

Key events

  • Cold Xian’s four Primordial Spirits flee in different directions after her body is lost. Three are intercepted:
    • Jinxu Nu traps one in the fierce wind of the Taiyi Purifying Fan, then captures it with the Heavenly Heart Ring.
    • Deng Bagu uses the Snow Soul Pearl and Myriad Forms Jade Radiance Ruler to shrink, freeze, and seal another Primordial Spirit inside the ruler.
    • Yuan Hua deploys the Heaven-and-Earth Purifying Ring. Its three rings overwhelm Cold Xian, divide her three souls among them, and seal them.
  • Cold Xian’s strongest, principal Primordial Spirit escapes southwest and dives into the earth’s axis, where she hopes to evade capture.
  • Xiong Manniang waits below with Yu’s Cauldron. When Cold Xian approaches, Manniang pins her with the cauldron’s red beams and uses the Dragon Sparrow Ring to restrain her.
  • Cold Xian’s immense power nearly breaks through. Manniang spends her vital essence, blood, and lifespan to keep the treasures working.
  • Shi Feiyang watches rather than intervening, intending to test and strengthen his disciple. When Manniang is near collapse and Cold Xian is close to escaping, he finally plucks his zither strings. The chapter ends as the deadly music begins.

Character developments and interactions

  • Jinxu Nu, Deng Bagu, and Yuan Hua each demonstrate skill and resolve by using powerful treasures to capture a fragment of Cold Xian. Yuan Hua is especially shaken by the Three Powers Purifying Ring’s terrifying might and reflects that it could have been used against him.
  • Xiong Manniang is portrayed as diligent but insecure about being the weakest of Shi Feiyang’s six direct disciples. Entrusted with the crucial escape route, she confronts Cold Xian despite the risk to her life, showing courage and determination.
  • Shi Feiyang acts as a demanding teacher: he deliberately lets Manniang struggle so she can be tempered, but intervenes when she is about to be overcome.
  • Cold Xian’s flight turns into a series of confrontations with Shi Feiyang’s disciples, whose coordinated efforts and specialized treasures progressively corner her.

Significant themes

  • Training through hardship: Shi Feiyang treats danger as a means of developing his disciples’ ability.
  • Courage and self-sacrifice: Manniang’s willingness to spend her life force underscores her commitment to her duty.
  • Power and restraint: Cold Xian’s vast cultivation is formidable, but carefully matched treasures and teamwork can contain it.
  • Responsibility and fear of failure: Manniang’s anxiety about her standing among her peers drives her to work harder and take the perilous assignment seriously.
