Background / History

Primordial Era

Before attaining the Dao, Chi Guanguan witnessed the battle in which the Profound Ancestor was killed. She was then at Perfected Great Unity and could follow only the broad outline of the confrontation. Her later account distinguishes what she observed from what she merely suspects, including whether the Ancestor possessed two Dao fruits 729.

She subsequently attained the Dao in the Primordial Era. She describes herself as that era’s foremost Formation Dao grandmaster and greatest beauty. Jiguang Shixin’s recollections also place Dust-Treading Cosmos True Lord above him in the Primordial Era’s Formation Dao hierarchy, though the two were only nodding acquaintances 501 558 582.

Residence in Zhang Yuan’s Dao Domain

Chi first appears to Zhang Yuan as a blurry figure, immediately recognizing the unusual composition of his Great Cavern Yin-Spectacle Immortal Domain. Her Daoist title and true name appear directly in his mind. When he privately questions her name, she strikes him on the head and rebukes his thoughts 500.

She claims his Immortal Palace as her territory and asks him to bring in her “bed”: a stone coffin beneath the Five Elements Formation Disc. Moving both into the Dao Domain gives Zhang access to the Five Elements Heaven-Sealing Formation, while allowing Chi’s divine sense to enter the coffin’s preserved female form 501.

The formation conceals her karma and also anchors her within the domain, preventing Zhang and Xiao Yuanjun from simply expelling her. Chi says this anchoring was an unintended benefit rather than her original purpose. Their dispute eventually becomes a negotiated arrangement: she offers inheritances and Secret Arts in exchange for permission to install her divine statue in the Immortal Palace 539 540 542.

Cooperation and Growing Trust

Chi proposes having Zhang create a temporary True Lord Dharma Body for her. He initially refuses because of the expense, the danger of empowering her, and his opposition to using human lives as ingredients. She explains that her method requires Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures instead, and offers access to supplies in her former Cave Abode once they return to the Azure Sky Dust-Stained Realm 531 542.

During the Great Heng conflict, she removes the Empress’s hidden Secret Art from Zhang’s Ji Earth and strips Immortal Lord Duoning Jianzhu’s restrictions from the Northern banner. The latter intervention leaves her visibly weakened. Zhang responds by offering resources to help her recover 590 593.

When the Great Heng Emperor threatens Zhang’s Sea of Consciousness, Zhang finally permits Chi to enter it. She immediately annihilates the Emperor’s primordial spirit, captures his remaining Divine Lord power, and installs her Immortal Palace inside Zhang’s consciousness 604 605.

Crimson Firmament Rosy Radiance Realm

Chi’s Great Encompassing Divine Sense dissipates while transporting Zhang away, but she subsequently reappears beside him in the Crimson Firmament Rosy Radiance Realm. The supplied account does not explain the mechanism of her return 850 851.

With Zhang’s Dao Domain lost and his former cultivation unavailable, she encourages him to develop the Qi Sea Unity Path before recovering the domain. She supplies the Mist-Sea Layered Tower Heaven-Splitting Scripture, chosen to suit the realm’s abundant mist and cloud qi, and later intervenes in his Nascent Soul formation 896 900 901 910.

When Zhang needs outside assistance against ancient powers, Chi uses a karmic connection to her true body to visit the Southern Heaven Realm. Unable to find Tan Chencheng, she secures Tan Yaozheng’s agreement to help, returns in less than a breath, and stands guard during Zhang’s Purple Mansion breakthrough 946 947.

Appearance

Chi’s full-sized manifestation resembles a tall female immortal with a slender waist, long dark hair, and cream-white skin. She stands almost level with Zhang Yuan and wears an immaculate Feather Garment and crown 501.

  • Hair: Long and black, spread through the coffin like clouds of ink 501.
  • Face: Delicately straight nose, long eyebrows, and lips retaining a faint smile while her preserved form lies asleep 501.
  • Eyes: Glossy black eyes are noted during her conversations with Zhang 701.
  • Footwear: Cloud-Treading Shoes 501.
  • Miniature form: Often sits, stands, or reclines on Zhang’s left shoulder, swinging her legs or resting beneath a small blanket made from magical power 850 921 947.
  • Divine-sense form: Can appear sufficiently lifelike that Zhang perceives her skin and fragrance as though she were physically present 921.

Personality

Chi is proud of her beauty, ancient accomplishments, and cultivation status. She readily accepts praise, objects to being called old, and frequently refers to herself as “this immortal.” Insults to her appearance or age provoke indignation, but flattery and pastries often restore her mood quickly 501 529 558 582 729.

Her teasing commonly turns ordinary interactions into supposed romantic entanglements. She mistakes Zhang’s encounters with Carefree True Person and Jiguang Shixin for intimacy, despite his repeated objections. Her technical insight does not make her equally adept at political scheming: she cannot follow the conspiratorial reasoning behind Zhang and Jiguang’s succession bargain 509 531 581 583.

She particularly resents Zhang’s distrust and envies his unquestioning bond with Xiao Yuanjun. Although she sometimes demands deference before helping him, she rejects the assumption that every favor must be a transaction. Her concern becomes increasingly explicit through cultivation guidance, protection, and offers to stand guard 592 593 741 947.

Her apparent innocence does not prevent decisive violence. She destroys the Great Heng Emperor’s primordial spirit without hesitation, prompting Zhang to reconsider how harmless she really is 605.

Abilities & Skills

Formation Dao

  • Claims to be the foremost Formation Dao grandmaster of the Primordial Era; Jiguang’s recollection supports her superior standing in that era 501 582.
  • Uses the Five Elements Heaven-Sealing Formation to conceal her karma and remain anchored inside Zhang’s Dao Domain 539 540.
  • Explains that this particular formation operates only within the Dao Domain 541.
  • Promises to teach Zhang the Primordial Era’s greatest formation arts, but admits in Chapter 701 that she has not yet taught him 701.

Divine Sense and Incarnation Creation

  • Reads Zhang’s unspoken thoughts, including doubts about her identity, age, and intentions 500 529 851.
  • Manipulates the Dao Domain’s imagos to create divine statues 541.
  • Forms a miniature incarnation from Zhang’s Earth of the Fifth imago; its essence belongs to him rather than her true form, leaving it without a karmic link that the Sun-Moon Arcane Radiance can target 558.
  • The miniature incarnation can move only within half a foot of Zhang, but lets her speak to him even when he blocks her messages 559.

Great Encompassing Dao Status

  • Draws on Unimpeded Foot to restore her accompanying divine sense’s True Lord-level Dao Status 590 592.
  • Possesses enough power to destroy Zhang’s Dao Domain, though Zhang realizes she has never exercised that ability against it 590.
  • Cannot safely fashion a True Lord-level magical body under the existing restrictions: the Sun-Moon Arcane Radiance could pierce the domain and annihilate her divine sense 590.

Secret Arts and Treasure Restrictions

  • Identifies the Great Heng Empress’s technique on Qin Tianyi as a primordial-spirit Secret Art capable of destroying his spirit and Sea of Consciousness, rather than straightforward mind control 588.
  • Extracts and effortlessly destroys the related Secret Art hidden in Zhang’s Ji Earth imago 590.
  • Removes Duoning Jianzhu’s ownership restrictions from the Northern Black-Devouring Nether Capital Banner, making it available for Zhang to refine; doing so visibly weakens her 593.
  • Annihilates the Great Heng Emperor’s invading primordial spirit and captures the Divine Lord power left behind 604 605.

Cultivation Guidance

Subject Contribution
Dao Domain development Helps Zhang integrate Ji Earth and Gui Water, with the latter completing elemental circulation and enabling his Late Heavenly Being breakthrough 592 616.
Heavenly Being Perfection Advises placing Yi Wood and Jia Wood in the seas to avoid incompatible metal-aligned grasses; supplies a Jianmu sapling model 799.
Cultivation-path compatibility Says the Qi Sea Unity and Gang Sha paths were incompatible even in the Primordial Era; suspects Spirit Transformation was later inserted into the hierarchy by a powerful being 559.
Qi Sea Unity method Rejects the Azure Firmament Vast Sea Art when its required sea qi is unavailable, then supplies the Mist-Sea Layered Tower Heaven-Splitting Scripture and offers to adjust it if modern conditions impede cultivation 897 900 901.
Nascent Soul formation Secretly forces Zhang’s nascent soul to resemble her, overriding other influences. She claims the result grants same-realm nascent-soul suppression and one hundred times their magical power 910.
Chaos Platform Explains its recognition of Zhang’s Purple Mansion, warns that its chaos qi could destroy him, and suggests his Dao Domain may fit another grotto 949.

Magical-Power Control and Auxiliary Arts

  • Creates an exquisitely detailed physical cultivation book from negligible wisps of Zhang’s magical power. His assessment is that her control could produce several times the spell strength from identical reserves 900 901.
  • Claims knowledge of pill cauldrons, puppetry, talismans, and other auxiliary arts, placing herself roughly among the Primordial Era’s top ten in those fields 791.
  • Offers to help Zhang learn Great Immortal Arts despite his limited aptitude 741.
  • Knowledge limit: Cannot supply a suitable spell for early Outer Dao Foundation Establishment. The lowest-level spells she acquired from that tradition require Tribulation Transcendence, because she learned them after becoming Great Encompassing 853.

Karmic Communication and Travel

  • Has Zhang perform Southern Dipper steps and invoke her True Lord, Origin Lady, and Emperor Lord titles to establish karma with her true body 946 947.
  • Draws a “mystery” through that connection, allowing her accompanying divine sense to visit the Southern Heaven Realm 947.
  • Returns from the journey in less than a breath after obtaining Tan Yaozheng’s promise of assistance 947.

Equipment / Items

  • Stone coffin — Her “bed,” linked to the Five Elements Formation Disc; contains the preserved female form used for her mystery incarnation 501.
  • Five Elements Formation Disc — Brought into Zhang’s Dao Domain with the coffin; enables the Heaven-Sealing Formation that conceals and anchors her 501 539 540.
  • Feather Garment, crown, and Cloud-Treading Shoes — Worn by her full-sized immortal form 501.
  • Immortal Palace — Initially occupies and decorates Zhang’s palace in an old-fashioned Primordial style; later establishes one in his Sea of Consciousness 501 538 605.
  • Divine statue — Gains permission to install her own statue in the palace in exchange for inheritances and Secret Arts 542.
  • Divine-power lamp — Converts the captured Great Heng Founder’s power into palace décor, preserving it for possible future use 605.
  • Former Cave Abode — Said to contain Dharma Body materials and other treasures. She does not know its present location but expects to sense it upon returning to the Azure Sky Dust-Stained Realm 542.

Relationships

  • Zhang Yuan — Host, travelling companion, and cultivation pupil in practice rather than an explicitly established formal discipleship. Their relationship develops from reluctant accommodation and suspicion into increasingly familiar cooperation; he ultimately entrusts her with defending his Sea of Consciousness 501 590 604 947.
  • Xiao Yuanjun — Rival whose influence over Zhang she envies. Their early struggle over the Dao Domain gives way to practical cooperation, and Chi later says Xiao has entrusted Zhang to her care 541 542 559 592 807.
  • Ao Xiu — Recognizes her as the East Sea Dragon Lord’s daughter. Their domestic disputes include stolen pastries, but Chi promises her a place in a future sanctuary and tries to enlist her in protecting Zhang from Jiguang 517 558 691 730.
  • True Lord Jiguang Shixin / Ye Xiangning — Ancient nodding acquaintance, not a close friend. Chi repeatedly teases Zhang about him, later opposes his attempts to extract favors from Zhang, and unsuccessfully intervenes during his retaliation 531 582 730 807.
  • Tan Yaozheng — Contacts the true Great Heng Founder on Zhang’s behalf and obtains her agreement to provide assistance 947.
  • Xie Jingxin — Observes her movements while Zhang cultivates and calls her a “Little Sword Fool,” judging her awkward outside swordsmanship 990.
