Rank 30 10 The First Trial grants ten ranks of soul power and an external soul bone. Teachers incorrectly assume he was born with rank-30 innate soul power.

Third soul ring: 100,000 years; rank 50 142 144 145 Completes the Third Trial through the continental tournament championship. Receives the Heaven-Equal Crown; support boosts rise to 50%.
Fourth soul ring; rank 60 160 162 178 Completes the Slaughter City stage and obtains Divine Slaughter’s Domain and the Dragon-Slaying Sword. The fourth ring is later documented at 200,000 years, with the first three rings also strengthened.
Eye perception: “vastness” realm 173 After twenty months with the Silver Dragon King, gains immense spiritual power with assistance drawn from the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm. Unlocks long-distance sight, minute-detail perception, and eye-based attacks.
Fifth soul ring: 400,000 years; rank 70 191 197 Completes the Fifth Trial by taking the papacy. Earlier rings each gain 30,000 years, producing ages of 100,000, 130,000, 150,000, and 230,000 years.
Sixth soul ring: 600,000 years; rank 80 217 234 Sixth Trial rewards add 50,000 years to each previous ring. His dragon manifestation reaches 1,860 meters; lightning control and four soul bones strengthen his defenses.
Seventh soul ring: 900,000 years; rank 90 249 250 Completing the Seventh Trial adds 100,000 years to every previous ring, grants a left arm bone, and unlocks darkness control rather than a conventional Martial Soul Avatar.
Eighth soul ring; rank 95 256 Completes the Eighth Trial by abolishing the continent’s feudal social system. Receives a God-Given Soul Ring and Soul Bone and gains light-attribute control.
Rank 98 256 Advances through ten years of cultivation after the Eighth Trial; his martial soul undergoes three successive transformations.
Dragon God inheritance; ten million-year rings 262 Completes the inheritance after a month-long gathering of divine energy. All ten rings become million-year rings, his soul bones evolve into the Dragon God Set, and he gains wood control.
Supreme God; eleven soul rings 272 Displays nine divine halos and eleven rings in the Divine Realm.
Five fused soul rings 289 Combines his rings into five groups: six elements; lightning; space; creation and destruction; and light and darkness. His divine power is above level 100.
Power of Time 317 318 Discovers a thirteenth fundamental attribute within the combined divine energies. With strength lent by the Divine Realm’s living beings, defeats Tang San’s World-Extinguishing Light.
  • Soul-power rank and ring-based title are not interchangeable for Su Chen. At rank 30 he remains a one-ring Soul Master; later he is explicitly described as a six-ring, rank-80 Soul Emperor 22 217.
  • His ring ages continue to grow through trial rewards. Obtaining additional rings is not his only source of improvement 178 197 234 250.

Background / History

Su Chen spent his previous life largely at home, playing games, watching short videos, and reading news and fanfiction. By the beginning of the story, he has lived in the Douluo Plane for six years. His familiarity with Douluo’s storyline gives him knowledge of future alliances, divine inheritances, and threats, but he has no system to guide his cultivation 1 10 12.

His mother died in childbirth. His father, a Soul Grandmaster and bounty hunter who hunted soul beasts for nobles, was killed during a mission. The property his father left behind kept Su Chen financially secure. Holy Soul Village’s residents affectionately called him “young chief” and expected him to become their future village chief even if he could not become a Soul Master 1.

Appearance

  • Early appearance: Black hair, black eyes, bronze skin, a lean, healthy build, and a sharply defined jaw 25.
  • Divine marking: A coiled golden dragon emblem between his brows, associated with his trials and the Dragon God’s Heart 8 186.
  • Mask: Wears a mask during the friendship tournament to cultivate mystery; it conceals his eyes and forehead while leaving his lower face exposed 22 25 106.
  • Enhanced eyes: After his stay with the Silver Dragon King, his eyes carry a faint, unusually profound fluctuation of spiritual power 173.
  • Divine attire: His evolved soul bones become the Dragon God Set, described as imperial robes of heaven and earth 262.

Personality

Su Chen is confident, inventive, and willing to challenge established assumptions. Rather than wait for conventional soul skills, he experiments with elemental control and develops techniques inspired by games and television from his previous life. His interests in blacksmithing and medicine likewise depart from the subjects other Soul Masters consider prestigious 16 23 24 35.

His strategic intelligence can be ruthless. He exploits opponents’ emotional vulnerabilities, uses hostages to obtain techniques and soul bones, and takes advantage of narrowly worded agreements. Against Tang Hao and Tang San, his desire for retaliation follows Tang Hao’s attempt to kill him and Bishop Zhang’s death while protecting him 94 96 110.

His treatment of allies is markedly different. He distributes rare herbs and soul bones according to compatibility, supports his companions’ advancement, and takes responsibility for their safety. With Xiao Xingyue, he rejects the idea that being purchased makes her a plaything and gives her a path to cultivation and leadership 102 105 106 116 144.

Su Chen combines social reform with political calculation. He seeks an end to continental warfare and feudal privilege, while also recognizing how personal relationships, manufacturing agreements, and public victories can strengthen his rule. His willingness to endanger divine beasts through scorched-earth warfare shows the tension between his protective ideals and his military pragmatism 228 232 237 303.

Abilities & Skills

Five-Clawed Golden Dragon

  • A higher-quality martial soul than the Golden Sacred Dragon with which it is initially confused 7.
  • Its five claws mark exceptional standing among dragons. Gu Yue tells Su Chen that he need not bow even to herself or the Supreme Gods 18.
  • Its awakening produces nine-colored radiance across Northtown Province and directly leads to divine selection 3.
  • Its manifested size increases with his ring development, reaching 1,010 meters after the Fifth Trial and 1,860 meters after the Sixth 197 234.

Elemental Control and Self-Created Soul Skills

  • Earth: His first ring grants control over earth rather than a single fixed attack. Applications include Earth-Rising Thorn, an earthen dragon’s mud projectile, rock enlargement, underground movement, entrapment, and reshaping a cliff into stairs 16 24 168 210.
  • Wind: Provides speed amplification and techniques such as Wind Release: Rasenshuriken. The completed Rasenshuriken consumes all his soul power in one attack 79 178 189.
  • Fire: Can burn through a giant spider’s web and turn a ten-li area into a sea of fire 166 289.
  • Metal: His fourth ring allows him to form golden swords from nearby metal and redirect metal objects across a battlefield, countering Chen Xin’s mass sword attack 197.
  • Lightning: Lightning Release: Kirin draws on storm-cloud lightning and kills the level-96 Tang Yan before his self-detonation can succeed 236.
  • Darkness: Dark Release: Black Hole swallows an incoming attack from Bibi Dong 250.
  • Light: Gains light-attribute control through the Eighth Trial’s rewards 256.
  • Wood: After becoming the Dragon God, conjures a wooden wall; his leaking divine power also causes enormous trees to grow throughout Spirit City 262.
  • Space: Freezes a Second-Level Deity in place and destroys him with a spatial dragon 289.

Early earth techniques are crude: his first mud projectile travels only three meters. He initially assigns separate hand seals to different techniques to compensate for unrefined control 16 24.

Support Skills

  • Beast Blood Boiling: Increases allies’ strength and defense 178.
  • Wind Speed: Increases allies’ speed 178.
  • Their documented boosts rise with his soul-power rank: 40% at rank 40, 50% at rank 50, and 60% at rank 60 79 145 178.
  • Enemy suppression can reduce their net benefit. Tang Hao’s Divine Slaughter’s Domain reduces a 40% speed boost to an effective 20% 79.

Dragon God’s Heart and Dragon Might

  • The Dragon God’s Heart is connected to his eventual inheritance of the Dragon God’s divine seat 186 262.
  • Dragon Might slows opponents’ blood flow and suppresses their soul power and martial souls 186.
  • Its suppression doubles against beast-martial-soul users and dragon soul beasts 244.
  • Helps him weaken the Golden Iron Triangle’s Holy Dragon and overcome Rasenshuriken’s normal danger to its caster 178 189.

Martial Soul Fusion

  • His martial soul can form a fusion skill with any other martial soul. Its resonance is sensed by Qian Renxue, Hu Liena, Xie Yue, and Soul Masters throughout Spirit City 8.
  • Qian Renxue explains that fusion requires complete trust and harmony of heart, not compatibility alone 15.
  • Directs a record-setting ten-person fusion involving the Golden Generation, Bull Demon, Xiao Xingyue, and Chrysanthemum Douluo 213.
  • Their combined form is a nine-clawed golden dragon whose Dragon God Claw overwhelms the Clear Sky Sect’s Third Elder 213.

Physical Combat and Evasion

  • Divine refinement improves his strength, reflexes, memory, and perception; weighted training further develops his body even while his soul power remains capped 15 21 148.
  • Leaf Dragon: Spins at high speed to create a tornado through taijutsu, rather than a soul-bone skill 53.
  • Eight Gates: Opens the second gate against Zhao Wuji and the third, Life Gate, against Bibi Dong. The third gate is described as the final safe stage 61 190.
  • Front Lotus: Combines deception, an airborne kick, and red-ribbon restraints against Zhao Wuji 61.
  • Substitution Technique: Enables evasive repositioning, but its movement traces can reveal where he will reappear. Xiao Wu exploits this weakness after learning Grandmaster’s analysis 168.
  • Clone Technique: Uses a newly mastered clone to escape Tai Tan’s pressure test and fly beyond his reach 110.
  • Thousand Years of Death: An invasive close-range attack repeatedly used to humiliate Xiao Wu, contributing to their antagonistic relationship 168 169.

Spiritual Perception

  • Divine body refinement gives him unusually sharp awareness of concealed killing intent 148.
  • The Silver Dragon King helps raise his eye-based perception to the fourth, “vastness,” realm 173.
  • Can see across a thousand miles, distinguish extremely fine details, and emit attacking light from his eyes 173.

Divine Slaughter’s Domain

  • Obtains the domain through the Slaughter City stage of his trials 145 160 167.
  • Masters control of its killing intent after two months of practice, allowing him to play peaceful music without radiating a lethal aura 167.
  • By the battle with Chen Xin, its basic suppression reaches 20% 199.

Soul-Ring Fusion and Time

  • Discovers that wind can strengthen fire, then extends the principle into broader elemental fusion 289.
  • Combines earth, wind, fire, metal, water, and wood into one ring; light and darkness into another; and retains separate lightning, space, and creation-and-destruction rings 289.
  • Recognizes Time as a thirteenth fundamental attribute emerging from harmonized divine powers 317 318.
  • Time alone does not defeat Tang San’s final attack; Su Chen also requires the strength willingly contributed by the Divine Realm’s living beings 318.

Craftsmanship, Music, and Strategy

  • Studies with blacksmiths and physicians and selects Golden Hammer Douluo’s lost forging manuscripts over armor or conventional skill manuals 23 35.
  • Acquires genuine Tang Sect cultivation techniques and hidden-weapon designs from Tang San, then teaches several techniques to Xiao Xingyue 100 106.
  • Plays the flute and teaches Qian Renxue music, cooking, battlefield strategy, and palace-intrigue tactics 15 21.
  • Uses terrain, harassment, staged retreats, fire, and flooding to offset a much larger divine army 303.
  • His withdrawals also buy time for Xiao Xingyue to arrive as the new Goddess of Life—the campaign’s concealed strategic objective 306.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Myriad Dragon Cloak — External soul bone earned through the First Trial. Enables flight and enhances attributes, speed, and resistances; withstands Zhao Wuji’s punch and later develops a flame-like pattern 10 61 142.
  • Heaven-Equal Crown — Hundred-thousand-year head soul bone awarded through the Third Trial. Activation increases soul power and all-attribute resistance by 20% 144 145.
  • Torso and right leg bones — By the Tang Yan duel, the torso, head, and external bones each provide 20% boosts, while the right leg bone provides 10%. Together, the four increase elemental affinity, soul power, and attribute resistance by 70% 234.
  • Dragon God Set — Divine equipment formed when his soul bones evolve during the Dragon God inheritance 262.
  • Dragon-Slaying Sword — Super Divine Artifact weighing 810,000 jin. Severs the Golden Iron Triangle’s Holy Dragon claw; its connection to Su Chen prevents others from wielding it while he lives 162 178 245.
  • Gravity Equipment — Weighted training gear worn daily except when bathing. Weighs 200 jin during his early academy training and also provides physical protection 21 35 70.
  • Purple Pope Token — Given by Bibi Dong; authorizes him to command a force of up to ten thousand 34.
  • Bibi Dong’s research notebook — Records her findings on Soul Master cultivation and soul beasts 34.
  • Golden Hammer Douluo’s manuscripts — Preserve lost forging methods from the Blacksmith Association’s founder and the continent’s first divine smith 35.
  • Ring Soul Tool — Stores items including immortal herbs and Life Ancient Tree leaves 102 282.
  • Heart of Goodness — The Goddess of Kindness’s Super Divine Artifact protects him from the God of Evil. Su Chen cannot wield it himself and relies on its emitted power 282.
  • Life Ancient Tree leaves — More than a hundred leaves gifted by the Goddess of Life. Divine power expands a leaf into a defensive shield, though a sufficiently strong destruction attack can break it 282.

Relationships

  • Bibi Dong — Teacher and political mentor. Su Chen eventually fights her for the papacy, but remains concerned for her survival. She refuses to kill him to complete her Rakshasa trial and blesses his relationship with Qian Renxue 30 34 189 249.
  • Qian Renxue — Childhood companion and later romantic partner. Their bond develops through shared food, music, and strategic lessons; he recognizes her Xue Qinghe disguise and supports her despite her palace killings 15 21 98 99 249.
  • Hu Liena — Fellow disciple of Bibi Dong, teammate, and Slaughter City companion. Initially treats him as someone to surpass; later harbors love for him and kisses him in connection with her Ninth Trial of Lust 150 160 257.
  • Zhang Ping — Sworn sister, not a blood relative. Her grandfather dies saving Su Chen, prompting him to become her sworn brother and care for her. She develops romantic feelings that she has not disclosed to him 96 277.
  • Xiao Xingyue — Direct disciple and prospective successor. He purchases her for 110,000 Gold Soul Coins, treats her as a person rather than property, and provides herbs, techniques, and a soul bone. Her unrequited love remains concealed in the finale 105 106 116 318.
  • Gu Yue / Gu Yuena — Silver Dragon King, divine guide, and major ally. Prevents his absorption of an unsuitable beast ring, strengthens his spiritual power, and supports his possible role in restoring beasts’ access to godhood 18 173 175.
  • Tang San — Fellow Holy Soul Village transmigrator and principal enemy. Su Chen exposes his twin martial souls, coerces him into surrendering Tang Sect secrets, disrupts his resource network, and ultimately defeats his attempt to destroy the Divine Realm 33 94 100 228 318.
  • Tang Hao — Enemy whose attack on Su Chen leads to Bishop Zhang’s death. Su Chen retaliates by using Ah Yin as leverage to obtain limbs and soul bones 79 96.
  • Xiao Wu — Antagonistic acquaintance whose resentment is complicated by gratitude and concern. Su Chen humiliates her in combat but later spares her and advocates coexistence; she eventually allows his group to escape and lends him power against Tang San 168 169 300 317.
  • Chrysanthemum Douluo — Escort, protector, and later pledged supporter. Su Chen secures his loyalty after discovering that he deliberately spared Yu Xiaogang under Bibi Dong’s orders 16 35 184.
  • Ghost Douluo — One of the elders assigned to protect him and accompany his soul-ring expeditions 16 17 162.
  • Yan, Xie Yue, Xu Yu, and Li Kai — Golden Generation teammates. They recognize his leadership and receive resources chosen to match their martial souls and combat roles 87 102 116 144 162.
  • Bull Demon — Ally and subordinate who assists with the Ah Yin operation and collection of Tai Tan’s wager. Expresses remorse and loyalty through drinking and practical support 85 98 110.
  • Su Yuntao and Director Yang — Early supporters. Su Yuntao recruits him; Director Yang protects him and arranges his elite accommodation. Su Chen later shields Su Yuntao from blame for failing to report Tang San 5 9 10 33.

Notable Quotes

“Don't underestimate those blacksmiths. Even the most useless person can accomplish great things when put in the right place!” 111

“Teacher, let's fight. In this battle, I'm fighting not only for myself, but also for my companions and the future of all Spirit Hall.” 186

“Is that all?” 234

Trivia

  • His techniques draw explicitly on entertainment from his previous life: Leaf Dragon is identified as Naruto-world taijutsu, while Sun Chuantao’s returning blade reminds him of Xiao Qiao’s skill in Honor of Kings 23 53.
  • His account of soul-beast conservation is practical as well as ethical: unrestricted hunting would eventually deprive humans of both soul beasts and soul rings 169.
  • The finale links his and Tang San’s transmigration to a circular structure of time and ancient Huaxia mythology. Xiao Xingyue’s proposed imperial title, Donghuang Taiyi, prompts him to recognize that connection 318.
