Background

Tsunade was born at the Land of Fire Daimyo’s estate, where her mother had lived after marrying the Daimyo’s second son. Because Tobirama had no heir, Hashirama had aged, and Tsunade showed exceptional ninja talent, she was brought to the Senju Clan Compound and raised as the clan’s heir. 86

As Hashirama’s remaining direct descendant, Tsunade became the centerpiece of Mito’s long-term plan to preserve and eventually restore the Senju Clan. Mito dispersed much of the clan among Konoha’s civilians while investing in Tsunade’s survival, strength, allies, and eventual political succession. 16
