Academy years

Jiraiya entered Konoha’s Ninja Academy as a commoner child in Class A. His shabby clothes and loud claims that he would become the strongest ninja drew ridicule from clan-born classmates, but his confidence was backed by real combat experience gained through street fights. 2 3

During the Placement Assessment, he faced Hoshi. Jiraiya attempted to seize the initiative with a surprise charge, relying on speed that exceeded expectations for his large build, but Hoshi defeated him and stopped him from falling face-first onto the ground. Jiraiya accepted the loss without resentment and quickly became Hoshi’s friend. 2 3

He later formed a close circle with Hoshi and Hatake Sakumo, then joined them in befriending Orochimaru after Orochimaru earned entry into Class A. 7 22

Early shinobi career

Jiraiya’s physical strength and taijutsu made him formidable in direct combat, though Orochimaru repeatedly exploited his tendency to telegraph ninjutsu and leave openings while forming hand seals. His training eventually gave him techniques such as Leaf Hurricane and Lion Combo, making him particularly effective in coordinated fights. 36 37

War and disciples

During the Second Great Ninja War, Jiraiya fought alongside Konoha’s forces and became deeply troubled by the suffering inflicted on civilians. Meeting the war-orphaned Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato strengthened his belief that the world needed someone capable of changing it. 163 194
