Background / History
Lu Yangong is the eldest senior brother of Lu Yanzhen and Sun Yanbo. He joined the Heavenly Demon Sect more than a hundred years before Sun Yanbo, and the two had been fellow disciples for centuries. Their master entrusted Lu Yanzhen with the sect leadership, gave Sun Yanbo the Overlord Sword, and taught Lu Yangong his knowledge of formation crafting, artifact refining, and pill refining 46 47 48.
Although Lu Yangong became the sect’s foremost practitioner across those disciplines, he believed his broad studies had distracted him from cultivation. He acknowledged that he had willingly pursued too many arts, but resented being passed over for leadership and remaining subordinate to Lu Yanzhen 46 47.
A further grievance concerned the sect’s plan for him to fuse with the Spirit-Devouring Beast. Sustaining the creature would consume his cultivation and end his prospects of attaining the Dao, while leaving his technical knowledge useful to the sect. Lu Yangong regarded this as being reduced to an exploitable tool and used it to justify his betrayal; the supplied chapters do not show him undergoing that fusion 23 47.
Appearance
Lu Yangong resembles an ordinary elderly farmer, but his narrowed eyes carry a cold, piercing sharpness that makes his gaze difficult to meet 42.
- Hair: Silver 42.
- Clothing: Black robe 42.
- Distinguishing features: Weather-beaten face and coarse hands and feet 42.
Personality
Lu Yangong is proud of his seniority and expects obedience from junior disciples. When Lu Xuanqing hesitates to disclose sect secrets before outsiders, he treats her caution as disrespect. His contempt for mortals also leads him to dismiss Liu Xing’s apparent request for discipleship without investigating him further 43 44.
His resentment does not prevent careful planning. He conceals murderous intent, uses a false account of political events to pressure Lu Xuanqing, and turns an apparently unfavorable duel into a poisoning trap. Even after Sun Yanbo escapes, he hides both his satisfaction and the battle’s outcome from his companions 43 48 49.
Abilities & Skills
Nascent Soul Cultivation
- Flies and transforms into black rainbow light, reaching outer space almost immediately 45.
- Uses divine sense and secret voice transmission 45 46.
- Releases enough power in combat with Sun Yanbo to shake Connors Star’s skies; their battle takes place outside the atmosphere to avoid planetary destruction 45 48.
- Is weaker than Sun Yanbo in direct combat despite having cultivated for over a hundred years longer. Repeated head-on clashes impose a heavy spiritual-energy cost on him 48.
Formation Crafting
- Created the Golden Light Spirit-Locking Formation sealing the Spirit-Devouring Beast’s copper box 43.
- The formation conceals the box’s dense spiritual energy and releases a lethal attack if forcibly opened—one that even a Golden Core cultivator would struggle to withstand 16 23.
- His formation expertise is sufficient to make an uninjured retreat from Sun Yanbo possible, though he instead chooses to prolong their confrontation 48.
Artifact and Pill Refining
- Learned both disciplines from his master and is acknowledged as the Heavenly Demon Sect’s strongest multidisciplinary specialist 47.
- Reconstructed the legendary Heavenly Decline of the Five Signs from an ancient formula, producing only one dose despite committing all his resources to it 48.
Combat Deception
- Calculates the position and angle of each collision with Sun Yanbo to expose him to poison mist 48.
- Conceals the mist within prolonged combat, allowing Sun Yanbo to draw it into his body alongside spiritual energy 48.
- Fails to anticipate the Overlord Sword’s escape technique and cannot pursue Sun Yanbo at its extraordinary speed 49.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Heavenly Decline of the Five Signs — A colorless, odorless poison without detectable energy properties. It prevents cultivators from replenishing spiritual energy, leaving them to weaken and die as their reserves drain. Lu Yangong originally prepared his sole dose for Lu Yanzhen but uses it against Sun Yanbo 48 49.
- Spirit-Devouring Beast’s copper box — A containment vessel protected by his Golden Light Spirit-Locking Formation. Liu Xing breaks its formation core and releases the beast before Lu Yangong reaches Connors Star 16 43.
Relationships
- Lu Yanzhen — Junior brother and sect master. Lu Yangong resents his appointment, rejects his authority, and originally intends to poison him 46 47 48.
- Sun Yanbo — Junior brother turned adversary. As enforcement elder, Sun attempts to bring him back for judgment, then offers to spare him if he abandons the Lin-Bai alliance. Lu Yangong refuses and poisons him 46 47 48.
- Lu Xuanqing — Junior sect disciple who addresses him as granduncle or grandmaster-uncle. He pressures her for the Spirit-Devouring Beast’s whereabouts and considers killing her to obtain it 42 43.
- Bai Hengqiu — Ally who accompanies his search, escorts Lu Xuanqing aboard ship, and arranges the fleet’s departure 45 49.
- Liu Xing — Dismissed as an insignificant mortal. Unknown to Lu Yangong, Liu Xing hosts the Spirit-Devouring Beast and secretly observes his confrontation with Sun Yanbo 44 45 46.
- Lin Jingtian — Leader whose power Lu Yangong cites to justify supporting the restoration of the Purple Thorn Dynasty 46.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Search on Connors Star
- Investigates Lu Xuanqing’s failure to deliver the Spirit-Devouring Beast, traces her disappearance to Connors Star, and brings Bai Hengqiu as a precaution 45.
- Claims the Heavenly Demon Sect has allied with the Bai Family against the Lin Household and will relocate to the Ice Phoenix System. This conceals his actual support for the Lin-Bai bid for dominance 43 47.
- Accepts Lu Xuanqing’s staged rejection of Liu Xing and secures her agreement to leave with him, without discovering the beast’s host 44.
Confrontation with Sun Yanbo
- Plans to split the departing fleet into four groups to evade pursuit, but Sun Yanbo arrives before departure 45.
- Rejects reconciliation and initiates combat, using his hidden poison to overcome Sun Yanbo’s superior swordsmanship 47 48.
- Intends to seize the Overlord Sword after Sun’s death, but the sword’s concealed escape technique denies him that prize 49.
Departure
- Assumes Sun Yanbo will die from spiritual-energy depletion and orders the fleet to leave in batches, withholding the duel’s outcome from Bai Hengqiu and Lu Xuanqing 49.
- Does not realize Sun Yanbo secretly returns to Connors Star, where Liu Xing locates him through the Spirit-Devouring Beast 49 50.
