His early sect-building philosophy centered on accepting people rejected by conventional cultivation society. He took in Xiao Lingxi after protecting her from the Lingxiao Sect, offered Ye Qingyao cultivation despite her Mortal Body and lack of a Spirit Root, and gave Xiao Yan a body-refinement path despite his Heaven-Abandoned Body 8 14 16 18. As the Heavenly Dao Sect grew, Su Bai transformed it from an obscure mountain sect into a regional power. Su Bai is a handsome young man commonly seen in white robes. His calm, refined bearing often causes opponents to underestimate him before they discover the scale of his strength 11 724.

Personality

Su Bai is confident, pragmatic, and unusually protective of those who choose to follow him. He rejects the belief that talent, birth, or Spirit Roots should determine a person’s future, repeatedly giving cultivation opportunities to mortals, outcasts, and people discarded by stronger factions 14 18 956.

As a master, he balances generosity with discipline. He provides his disciples with techniques, weapons, homes, pills, and protection, but also criticizes their failures in battle and expects them to learn from mistakes 25 28 31. He treats the Heavenly Dao Sect as a home rather than a hierarchy built on fear.

Su Bai is ruthless toward enemies who attempt murder, oppression, or betrayal. He often turns their weapons, treasures, bodies, or formations into resources for the sect rather than wasting them 104 164 777. Despite this pragmatism, he distinguishes between entire races and individual wrongdoing, declaring that his Wooden Sword targets those who bring calamity rather than indiscriminately killing demons or humans 180.

His compassion is practical rather than indiscriminate. When helping a disabled beggar, he gives ten copper coins rather than a tael of silver, explaining that excessive money could attract danger to someone unable to defend himself. He similarly feeds the starving Su Ling’er porridge and a steamed bun rather than rich food that her weakened body cannot safely tolerate 11 431.

He insists on voluntary allegiance and participation. He refuses to force Zhuge Feng to follow him even when desperately needing a disciple, respects Nameless’s wish to work as a floor-sweeping menial disciple rather than an elder, and later allows more than five hundred billion disciples to decide for themselves whether to fight in Emperor Path Strife 3 60 1279.

Su Bai does not describe himself as a saint or savior. His willingness to intervene in humanity’s suffering rests on his own principles and his recognition that he remains a member of the Human Race regardless of his cultivation. He also acknowledges that strength is necessary to protect those principles in a world where enemies need not respect reason or righteousness 21 256.

Although confident against enemies, he sincerely respects those who sacrifice for others. He admires the Great Elder’s willingness to guard the border despite possessing the strength to live freely, and entrusts Wan Ying with the Eternal Immortal Tree because she previously died fighting for the Immortal Realm 647 1044.

Founding the Heavenly Dao Sect

Su Bai begins by recruiting people who lack status, resources, or conventional cultivation talent. His first major disciples—Zhuge Feng, Xiao Lingxi, Xiao Yan, and Ye Qingyao—establish the sect’s central ideal: no one is inherently useless if given a path and the resolve to walk it 3 8 14 18.

He encourages Xiao Yan to regard his determination as the foundation of a new path and promises that, by following the Heavenly Dao Sect, he can prove himself against Liu Yanran in three years 11.

Rise in Southern Ridge

After destroying the Jade Spirit Sect and resisting the Lingxiao Sect, Su Bai upgrades the Heavenly Dao Sect and develops its mission, point, and reputation systems. The sect becomes known for superior techniques, generous resources, and rapid cultivation progress 22 25 27.

The wealth seized from Gao Kepan includes the protection payments of nine factions, greatly increasing the sect’s resources. As the disciple population reaches 31,314, Su Bai advances to Ninth-Level Foundation Establishment and then enters Golden Core through Xiao Yan’s breakthrough 64.

His later defense against the Six-Kingdom Coalition demonstrates his supremacy in Southern Ridge. At Nascent Soul Eighth Level, he fights more than thirty Nascent Souls, kills them in succession, and directs his strongest attack against the Great Jin Emperor, the invasion’s mastermind 117 118 119 120.

Conflict with the Heavenly Palace

Su Bai’s defeat of Gao Kepan, Di Buyu, and multiple Heavenly Palace factions establishes the Heavenly Dao Sect as a threat to the existing order. He gains the Fire Qilin, defeats Di Buyu twice, and converts Di Buyu’s body into a Nascent Soul Battle Puppet after the assassination attempt 62 101 104.

The Heavenly Palace later targets Yan Xiao, his Second True Self, through the Artifact Sect and the Heaven-Severing Formation. Great Hammer Venerable’s professed wish to join the Heavenly Dao Sect conceals a Sect Favorability of -100, while the eventual ambush deploys eight Heavenly Venerables to maintain the formation and four Invincible Heavenly Venerables to attack 279 281.
