Background / History
Investiture Calamity
After the Demon Race’s defeat, Nuwa withdrew beyond the Thirty-Three Heavens and rarely involved herself in worldly affairs. She initially regarded the Investiture Calamity as unrelated to her interests and scorned Tongtian for renouncing his Sage Dao Fruit 9 15 32.
King Zhou’s temple worship drew her attention when the Kongtong Seal and Yin Shang’s fortune dragon reacted to interference. Although the calamity obscured divination, Nuwa recognized that a Sage had acted. Yuanshi later acknowledged responsibility for the earlier offense when seeking her cooperation 14 15 34.
Nuwa initially refused to attack Yin Shang: it had not offended her, and intervention would create unjustified hostility with Tongtian. She eventually demanded that Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti help her obtain the Eastern Emperor Bell before the calamity, securing their promise through a Great Dao oath backed by half the fortune of their two teachings 34 35.
She then ordered the Three Demons of Xuanyuan Tomb to undermine Yin Shang. Tongtian detected their approach and sent Yu Hua to kill them before they could possess Daji. Nuwa attacked Yu Hua with the Red Embroidered Ball, but Tongtian protected him with the Eastern Emperor Bell and forced her to withdraw 35 36.
Her subsequent appeal to Hongjun failed to secure either Tongtian’s removal from the investiture or the weakening of Yin Shang. She left the strategic discussions because the bell mattered more to her than the war’s outcome. Later, promises of Human Dao fortune and fear of Tongtian’s growing superiority persuaded her to rejoin the opposing alliance, though Tongtian eventually frightened her away 37 38 81 113.
Nuwa accepted Tongtian’s final system of competitive Heavenly Court appointments while remaining detached from the settlement. His announcement that he had retrieved Xihe from the River of Time unsettled her by recalling her failure to protect the Demon Race during its catastrophe; she departed without confronting him 116 117.
Hidden Strength and the Holy Lands
When Tongtian proposed filling the Human and Earthly Daos’ Sage positions, Nuwa revealed her seventh-heaven cultivation. She subsequently reached the eighth heaven and received the Reincarnation God-Slaying Scripture. During this period, she showed greater warmth toward Tongtian and acknowledged that his conduct during the Investiture Calamity had changed her opinion of him 326 327 331.
That cooperation collapsed when Hongjun attacked Tongtian. Tongtian wounded Nuwa and took her hostage, prompting Hongjun to reveal that both of them came from the Primordial Chaos Holy Land and had been trapped inside the Primordial World by Pangu 338.
After arriving in the Shiva Holy Land, Tongtian kept Nuwa captive as insurance against Hongjun. She helped conceal their origins by posing as a wandering cultivator and presenting Tongtian as her disciple. Her knowledge of local factions helped sustain the disguise, and she later served as an elder of the Holy Land Interception Sect 341 342 532.
When Ye Qing destroyed the sect’s protective array and killed Chi Jiao and Li Jiao, Nuwa threatened him despite being bound and vastly weaker. Her invocation of Venerable Burning Flame and Venerable Brahma frightened him into retreating. When Holy Mother Feihong arrived, Nuwa denied recognizing either Feihong or Ye Qing 426 436.
During Tongtian’s absence, Nuwa left with an old acquaintance whom he believed to be Hongjun. She later appeared with Hongjun and Kunlun at Bai Zeyu’s husband-selection tournament, where Commander Huoyun’s deference exposed her high standing. The group negotiated permission to return to the Primordial Chaos Holy Land, and their avatars finally arrived there 532 793 811 813 816.
Back home, Nuwa turned Tongtian’s promise of five places in the Primordial World into a proposed contest among the Four Great Sacred Lands. She later took first place in the Myriad Worlds Arena, ahead of Kunlun, and received Fenyan’s order to wait for an opportunity to kill the figure suspected of being connected to Pangu and Luohu 816 876 894.
Nuwa and Kunlun attempted to save a wounded Hongjun at Heavenly Venerable Mountain. When his betrayal became apparent, she condemned him. Hongjun retaliated by alleging that Fenyan had killed both Pangu and Nuwa’s birth mother; she defended her father, but the accusation shook her 904 906.
Tongtian’s Disciple and Humanity’s Creator
In the later Primordial-era storyline, Tongtian summoned the newly advanced Daluo Golden Immortal Nuwa and accepted her as his disciple. He gave her a complete Primordial Chaos cultivation art and created a palace containing a miniature world for her practice 999 1000 1001.
Nuwa began creating unusual creatures, initially with little intelligence or cultivation ability. Recognizing her affinity for Creation and the Soul, Tongtian encouraged her to develop both. She eventually returned to the Primordial World for inspiration, studying wandering souls and making bodies that could restore them to living existence 1011 1012 1015.
After reaching the Primordial Origin Realm, Nuwa persuaded Shen Ni to rescue two Qilin elders whose simultaneous breakthroughs were interfering with one another. Although she considered their crisis self-inflicted, she judged that their future strength could help defend the world against outside threats 1022 1023.
Nuwa briefly joined the Demon Heavenly Court to repay the karmic debt associated with the Demon Race’s fortune. She immediately withdrew, transferring her share of fortune without accepting lasting duties. Di Jun and Taiyi abandoned a plan to exploit Fuxi after recognizing that it could provoke her into destroying the court 1050 1051.
Guided by her enduring mission to create humanity, Nuwa produced one million innate humans in eighty-one days, each born with Heavenly Immortal strength. She stayed with them for a thousand years before allowing their civilization to develop independently 1074 1075.
Her protection remained selective. She secretly rescued humans from a Demon Race Quasi-Saint and supplied defensive formations for their Ancestral Land, but rejected moving humanity into the Beast Emperor Palace. When Guiche deliberately slaughtered humans to provoke her, she annihilated his body and soul in a single move 1080 1082 1139 1140.
Nuwa subsequently settled among humanity and promised a century of cultivation guidance. She supplied techniques and patiently answered questions while insisting that humans obtain their own resources. Teaching humanity also deepened her understanding of Creation, leading to her middle-stage Primordial Origin breakthrough 1154 1155 1156 1168 1170.
She also accepted Daoist Yunfeng as a disciple. After surviving her destruction tribulation, she entered seclusion to consolidate her gains, hoping to become strong enough to help Tongtian. She later emerged as Duobao approached her cave abode and new tribulation clouds gathered; no further completed advancement is shown in the supplied material 1169 1172 1173 1174.
Appearance
- True form: Serpent-bodied, as identified through Di Jun’s divination 1028.
- Beauty: Already exceptionally beautiful; three transformations of her flesh and bones further enhance her appearance during the Shiva Holy Land storyline 375 376.
- Youthful presentation: In the later Primordial-era storyline, she blushes when she mistakenly interprets Tongtian’s interest as romantic 1000 1001.
Personality
Nuwa is proud, independent, and difficult to recruit through empty promises. She weighs karmic debts and political risks carefully, initially refusing to harm an unoffending Yin Shang. Her independence also appears in her momentary membership of the Demon Heavenly Court: she repays what she owes without allowing its leaders to impose further obligations 34 35 1050 1051.
Her temper can be fierce. The early narration explicitly characterizes her as petty, while her humiliation during the temple incident provokes a public outburst. In the Shiva Holy Land, grief for slain friends drives her to challenge Ye Qing despite the overwhelming difference in their strength 15 426.
The later Nuwa is playful and initially reluctant to endure prolonged seclusion, but becomes disciplined and ambitious. She enjoys creation more than conventional cultivation and wants to prove herself worthy of Tongtian’s confidence 1001 1015 1020 1173.
Her compassion is tempered by a strong belief in self-reliance. She refuses to kill beings for research, helps the Qilin Clan despite its faults, and protects humanity without sheltering it from every hardship. She also judges human progress primarily by cultivation strength, showing displeasure when its leaders emphasize civilization rather than their ability to survive 1012 1023 1082 1156 1157.
