Background / History
Tongtian originally belonged to the Three Pure Ones alongside his elder brothers, Taishang Laozi and Yuanshi. They cultivated together, entered Zixiao Palace together, founded their teachings, and became Sages. His Interception Sect welcomed beings whom other sects rejected, earning the loyalty of its diverse disciples 6 7.
The protagonist has occupied Tongtian’s identity for three months when the opening confrontation occurs. His knowledge of the expected Investiture story warns him of the sect’s destruction, disciples’ betrayals and conversion to the Western Teachings, and his own eventual confinement in Zixiao Palace after receiving a Saint-Slaying Pill. These are outcomes he intends to prevent, not events already suffered by the current Tongtian 2.
Appearance
- Posture: Stands ramrod straight, often with his hands clasped behind his back 1 2.
- Expression: Maintains an unreadable, expressionless face when confronting the Four Saints 2 3.
- Arrival display: Appears across a rainbow bridge amid auspicious radiance, immortal cranes, golden clouds, and immortal music 1.
- Cultivation aura: After adopting the Nine Revolutions Heavenly Art, radiates a heavy, mysterious chaos aura; his cave abode takes on the appearance of undivided primordial chaos 7.
Personality
Tongtian’s initial resistance is driven chiefly by self-preservation. Although he publicly defends the sect, he later acknowledges that fighting the Four Saints was originally about escaping his own destined end. Seeing his disciples’ willingness to die for him turns that resistance into a genuine sense of responsibility for their survival 8.
He combines defiance with calculated restraint. His first attack buys cultivation time, and he conceals his exhaustion afterward rather than exposing his vulnerability. He also submits to Hongjun’s summons because he recognizes that Hongjun remains stronger than him 4 6 9.
Unlike the original Tongtian, whose affection could leave him vulnerable to persuasion, the transmigrator refuses to let brotherhood override the sect’s interests. He is sharp-tongued toward Yuanshi and willing to employ confinement, lethal orders, and political purges. His protective loyalty therefore coexists with considerable ruthlessness 18 23 31 37 39.
Abilities & Skills
Nine Revolutions Heavenly Art
- A Great Dao-level cultivation art awarded by the Great Dao Choice System. Its stated ultimate potential is direct attainment of Great Dao Saint status without dependence on the Heavenly Dao 2.
- Enables Tongtian to reunite his Three Corpses and replace his former cultivation path 7.
- Works with Pangu’s essence blood to improve his foundation and deepen his understanding of the Great Way of Power and Primordial Unity 7.
- After renunciation, Tongtian believes he can withstand four Saints in a short battle. He considers prolonged combat more favorable beyond the heavens, where chaos power is abundant; he still acknowledges that Hongjun outmatches him 9.
Swordsmanship and the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation
- Uses the Qingping Sword to unleash vast sword shadows, rupture the void, and repel Jieyin and Zhunti in a single exchange 4 5.
- Deploys the Four Immortal-Slaying Swords to break the Pangu Banner’s sealed chaos realm and trap all four opponents 5.
- Infuses the formation with his remaining temporary chaos power, overwhelming their combined attack and gravely injuring Yuanshi 6.
- Later uses the formation as a barrier around the Heavenly Court, preventing Yuanshi from interrupting Yang Jian and Yang Chan’s meeting with the Jade Emperor 29 31.
- The formation ordinarily requires four Saints acting together to break; its opening victory is strengthened by the system’s temporary power 1 6.
Divine Sense, Divination, and Concealment
- Leaves strands of divine sense at strategically important locations to monitor future threats 19 35.
- Uses divination to learn how Duobao rallied the sect and to identify Kui Ox’s exceptional fortune 7 8.
- Hides Golden Ao Island within the void after the opening battle 6.
- Obscures heavenly workings to prevent the Chan Sect from detecting Yin Shiniang’s departure and arranging an ambush 48.
- Sends private voice transmissions to issue orders across distant locations 12 25 36.
Foreknowledge and Strategy
- Knows the expected Investiture sequence, including Duobao’s future defection, Nezha’s importance, and King Zhou’s dangerous visit to the Nuwa Temple 7 13 19.
- Targets the fighters Jiang Ziya would need rather than treating Jiang Ziya alone as the decisive threat 19.
- Revises his assumptions when changed circumstances produce different behavior, notably postponing judgment on Duobao 7.
- His knowledge is incomplete: he recognizes famous figures but does not know enough of the sect’s membership to readily choose a Punishment Hall leader 8.
Great Dao Choice System
- Offers choices between cooperating with Heaven’s established course and resisting it, with different rewards attached 2 13.
- Provides cultivation resources and treasures that make his independent path possible 2 13.
- Does not respond to every problem. Tongtian consequently treats his own cultivation as more reliable than waiting for further system rewards 11.
Instruction and Transformation
- Helps Kui Ox assume human form, freeing him from his former role as a mount 8 9.
- Imparts the Eight-Nine Arcane Art to Yang Jian and equips him for a future role as the sect’s god of war 29.
- Encourages Yang Jian to question inherited hatred through practical reasoning before arranging a direct conversation with his uncle 26 29.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Four Immortal-Slaying Swords — Slaughter treasures used to establish the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation. Their overwhelming offensive power does not make them suitable for anchoring the sect’s fortune 5 8.
- Qingping Sword — His companion treasure, formed from the Creation Green Lotus’s green leaf; a supreme-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure. Formerly used to protect the sect’s fortune, though inadequate for its size. Tongtian gives it to Duobao as a symbol of delegated authority 4 8 11.
- Eastern Emperor Bell — A top-tier Innate Supreme Treasure received from the system. Anchors the Interception Sect’s fortune and shields disciples from attacks by Yuanshi and Nuwa 13 23 35 36.
- Nine-Layer Soul-Locking Pagoda — A top-tier acquired Merit Supreme Treasure whose stated protection blocks soul-targeting methods, even from the Heavenly Dao. Entrusted to Wen Zhong for placement within King Zhou’s primordial spirit 13.
- Investiture of the Gods List and God-Beating Whip — Received from Hongjun after the List’s restoration, then passed to Wen Zhong to carry out the investiture 11 12.
- Pangu’s essence blood — Receives three drops initially and ten more later. The first three are fully refined; refinement of the later ten is underway in the supplied passages 2 7 13 15.
- Three-Pointed Double-Edged Spear — An Innate Spiritual Treasure obtained through Yang Jian’s advancement gift package and bestowed upon him 29.
Relationships
- Yuanshi — Second elder brother and principal rival. Attempts to force Tongtian’s disciples onto the List; Tongtian wounds him, severs their brotherhood, and repeatedly counters Chan Sect plans 1 6 23 31.
- Taishang Laozi — Eldest brother. Initially joins the coercion, but later regrets his partiality, withdraws the Human Sect from the conflict, and warns others against exploiting Tongtian’s apparent loss of power 6 10 11.
- Hongjun — Teacher and superior authority. Grants Tongtian investiture oversight but restricts his personal intervention; Tongtian conceals his new cultivation path from him 9 10 11.
- Jieyin and Zhunti — Rival Western sages who exploit the Three Pure Ones’ division. Their growing concern over Tongtian’s success leads them into an alliance with Yuanshi 1 32 33.
- Nuwa — Initially detached, later an opponent seeking the Eastern Emperor Bell. Tongtian defeats her attempt to destabilize Yin Shang and blocks her attack on Yu Hua 35 36.
- Daoist Duobao — Direct disciple and delegated sect administrator. Tongtian initially considers killing him over his foreknown betrayal, then reconsiders after witnessing his loyalty and entrusts him with the Qingping Sword 7 11.
- Golden Spirit, Wudang, and Turtle Spirit Holy Mothers — His other three direct disciples; share the sect’s concern for his safety and receive his reform instructions 7 8.
- Zhou Kui / Kui Ox — Former mount whom Tongtian transforms, names, and appoints head of the Punishment Hall 8 9.
- Wen Zhong — Trusted descendant disciple and Shang minister. Receives the investiture treasures and carries out Tongtian’s political and protective assignments 12 13 39.
- Wuyun Xian — Entrusted with recruiting and protecting Nezha; receives Tongtian’s support against the Chan Sect 19 23 24.
- Zhao Gongming and Sanxiao — Beloved disciples assigned to rescue Yang Jian and Yang Chan and obstruct Yu Ding Zhenren 25 26.
- Yang Jian and Yang Chan — Grand-disciples through Zhao Gongming. Tongtian shelters them, challenges their understanding of their family’s tragedy, and facilitates reconciliation with Haotian 26 29 30.
- Haotian / Jade Emperor — Political ally. Accepts Tongtian’s terms for cooperation between the Heavenly Court and Interception Sect 31 32.
- Shen Gongbao — Chan Sect recruiter whom Tongtian draws into Golden Ao Island and prevents from leaving, neutralizing his mission 18 19 33.
- Nezha — Recruited into the sect through Wuyun Xian. Tongtian monitors attempts to manipulate him and later welcomes him and Yin Shiniang onto Golden Ao Island 19 42 48.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Destroying the List and Repelling the Four Saints
- Rejects the Great Dao Choice System’s cooperative path and chooses resistance when Yuanshi, Laozi, Jieyin, and Zhunti demand his signature 1 2.
- Pretends to approach the List compliantly, then tears it apart with Pangu-derived power despite its Heavenly Dao protections 3.
- Uses the ensuing battle to intimidate his opponents and gain cultivation time rather than merely venting anger 4.
- Exhausts his temporary power in a decisive formation strike, conceals his weakened condition, and withdraws after declaring the break with his brothers 6.
Reforming the Interception Sect
- Orders unauthorized travelers back within ten years or face expulsion, while exempting disciples serving as Yin Shang officials 8.
- Establishes a Punishment Hall to curb wrongdoing committed under the sect’s name, which he identifies as a source of tribulation aura 8 9.
- Renounces his Sage Dao Fruit and argues before Hongjun that the sacrifice should satisfy the sect’s share of the calamity 9 10.
- Secures ten disciple exemptions and investiture oversight, though Hongjun still prohibits his direct participation 10 11.
- Seals Golden Ao Island: entry remains permitted, but departure requires his authorization. Duobao explains the sacrifice behind these restrictions and wins the disciples’ acceptance 11 12.
Protecting Shang and Redirecting Future Disciples
- Chooses to support King Zhou against Heaven’s ordained Xiqi victory, rejecting a reward of ten million years of cultivation for compliance 13.
- Sends Wen Zhong to protect King Zhou from mental manipulation before the Nuwa Temple visit 13.
- Confines Shen Gongbao before he can lure Interception disciples into the calamity 18 19.

- Prevents Yuanshi from retaliating against Wuyun Xian, securing Nezha’s place in the sect 23 24.
Rescuing Yang Jian and Building the Heavenly Court Alliance
- Detects Yu Ding’s manipulation of Yang Jian’s family crisis and commissions Zhao Gongming to rescue and recruit the surviving siblings 24 25.
- Takes them to the Heavenly Court while his sword formation keeps Yuanshi outside. Haotian’s explanation allows the siblings to reconcile with their uncle 29 30 31.
- Negotiates an alliance in which Interception disciples obey Heavenly Court laws and assignments while retaining freedom from the List and protection against unjust accusations 32.
- Swears a binding Heavenly Dao oath with Haotian. The resulting merit nearly clears the sect’s tribulation aura and raises its fortune slightly above the Chan Sect’s 32.

- Detects the Three Demons of Xuanyuan Tomb near Chaoge and sends Yu Hua to stop their infiltration through Daji. Shields him when Nuwa retaliates 35 36.

Safeguarding the Changed Nezha
- Watches Chentang Pass for attempts to use Li Jing and tribulation aura to reclaim Nezha for the Chan Sect 42.
- Obscures heavenly workings during Yin Shiniang’s departure, denying the Chan Sect an opportunity to ambush her party 48.
