Background / History
Shisui’s departure and the chance for peace
At the Naka Shrine gathering, Itachi notices Shisui’s troubled expression after Yu secretly warns him about Danzo. Following Shisui’s escape from Root, the two meet outside Konoha. Shisui explains Danzo’s attempt to seize his eyes and asks Itachi to find the unidentified master whose warning saved him 24 27.
Before leaving to infiltrate Akatsuki, Shisui awakens Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan and entrusts him with a letter for Fugaku. Itachi promises to pursue the master as the clan’s remaining chance to avoid destruction 27.
Itachi delivers the letter and admits to Fugaku that Danzo has threatened Sasuke’s life to obtain his cooperation in exterminating the Uchiha. Without Shisui’s alternative, he believes he would have submitted. Fugaku instead proposes negotiations with Konoha, promises to calm the clan, and sends Itachi to deliver the proposal to Hiruzen 28.
Investigating Yu
Sasuke’s account of Yu learning basic ninjutsu immediately draws Itachi’s attention. After coaching Sasuke, Itachi attends the boys’ shuriken contest and examines Yu with his Sharingan. He identifies chakra reserves comparable to a jōnin’s and suspects the boy is concealing even more, but does not yet recognize him as Shisui’s mysterious master 28 29.
When Yu’s Great Fireball becomes an uncontrolled pillar of flame, Itachi recognizes that the boy has bypassed the safeguards of the Eight Gates. He directs Neji to strike Yu’s chakra points, then explains the incident to the crowd after Yu stops the technique 31.
That evening, Uchiha youths confront Itachi for watching the contest rather than attending to clan affairs. He defeats them and condemns their narrow attachment to clan identity and reputation. His distress activates his Mangekyō, revealing black bubbles of resentment that Sasuke cannot see 32.
The bubbles form a bat. Itachi’s kunai passes through it, and Amaterasu only disperses it briefly. After its sonic retaliation makes him hear the youths’ resentful thoughts, he deduces that someone is converting resentment into chakra constructs. He connects the technique to Shisui’s unseen benefactor 33.
During a later encounter, Itachi uses his Yin Release Crow Hunt Technique to synchronize briefly with a bat’s chakra. This reveals the caster’s general location in the Hyuga compound. He follows the moving source toward a private meeting 38.
Alliance with Yu
Itachi finds Yu in the woods east of Konoha and accepts that the child is the expert he had overlooked. He kneels and offers his life in exchange for the Uchiha’s protection, but Yu raises him and insists they discuss the crisis as equals 39.
Their discussion turns from individual enemies to structural reform. Itachi recognizes that withdrawing the Uchiha from the Military Police Force would merely transfer public resentment to other clans. Yu gives him a draft Konoha civil code defining offenses and sentencing standards for Fugaku to submit at the negotiations 39.
Yu then proposes that Itachi become Hokage by saving Konoha during a future crisis, predicted to occur within one to five years. Itachi reluctantly accepts this condition, along with keeping Yu’s identity and information secret—even from Fugaku—and helping him cook. He also warns that he would not accept Yu becoming another Danzo 40.
Yu’s vermilion pill allows Itachi to develop his Susanoo to its armored Crow Tengu form. The two reveal their Susanoo, exchange teasing remarks, and part on friendly terms. Itachi returns home confident that the Uchiha can be saved, but honors his promise not to identify Yu. He later accompanies Fugaku to the negotiations 41 42 50.
Appearance
- Hair: Wears his hair tied back, described as a ponytail and later as a braid 29 41.
- Clothing: Wears a thin black shirt while keeping watch on the Uchiha compound’s rooftop 38.
- Eyes: Uses both three-tomoe Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan; his active Mangekyō glows crimson during his nighttime vigil 27 32 38.
- Susanoo: Manifests a crimson upper-body avatar whose armored Crow Tengu form has glowing golden eyes 41.
Personality
Itachi is analytical and willing to revise his assumptions. He initially discounts Yu because the child does not match his image of an expert, then explicitly acknowledges how that preconception limited him. His investigation of the resentment bats combines observation, failed attacks, and chakra analysis rather than relying on a single explanation 33 38 39.
His desire to protect both Konoha and his family creates a severe conflict. He recognizes faults in the Uchiha as well as the village leadership, opposes a rebellion that would devastate both sides, and admits he might have accepted Danzo’s massacre proposal to preserve Sasuke. When offered another path, he is willing to humble himself and pursue reform 28 39.
Itachi is more comfortable protecting peace from the shadows than seeking public leadership. Nevertheless, he questions Yu’s methods and refuses to treat trust as permission for unchecked power. His reserve softens around Sasuke, Izumi, and eventually Yu, revealing affection, shyness, and a dry sense of humor 33 40 41.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Itachi uses his ocular abilities to assess chakra and perceive otherwise hidden constructs 29 32 33.
- Gauges Yu’s visible chakra reserves and reasons that his actual reserves may be greater 29.
- Sees resentment bubbles and bats through his Mangekyō, while Sasuke cannot perceive them 32 33.
- Uses the three-tomoe Sharingan during his confrontation with the Uchiha youths 32.
Amaterasu
Itachi casts Amaterasu from his right eye while pursuing a resentment bat 33.
- Ignites the bat with black flames, briefly breaking it into bubbles 33.
- Fails to destroy the construct permanently; it reforms and retaliates 33.
- The cast leaves his eye bloodshot and causes bleeding from its corner 33.
Susanoo
Itachi develops his newly awakened Susanoo by investing the pill’s temporary chakra surplus into lasting advancement 41.
- Progresses from a skeletal upper body to a fleshed-out form and then heavy Crow Tengu armor 41.
- Reaches the highest Susanoo stage described as attainable with an ordinary Mangekyō Sharingan 41.
- Manifests the Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade; also develops the Yasakani Magatama 41.
Shurikenjutsu and Fire Release
Itachi excels at collision-based throwing techniques and teaches Sasuke advanced combinations 29 30.
- Specializes in the Uchiha Style Wind-Chasing Shuriken Technique, redirecting projectiles through collisions 30.
- Prefers kunai to standard four-pointed shuriken for their weight and suitability for straight-line attacks 30.
- Teaches Sasuke Fire Release: Phoenix Flower Claw Crimson, combining flaming shuriken with precise Fire Release control 30.
- Recognizes the tactical value of Yu’s unconventional throws despite the crowd’s dismissive reaction 29.
Yin Release: Crow Hunt Technique
Itachi creates a black crow through Yin Release to investigate the resentment bats 38.
- Uses momentary chakra synchronization to trace a bat back toward its caster 38.
- Identifies the Hyuga compound as the caster’s general location, not an exact position 38.
- His crow is destroyed on contact because the bat’s technique operates at a higher level 38.
Tactical Analysis and Combat
Itachi combines rapid threat assessment with decisive action 31 32.
- Identifies Yu’s uncontrolled chakra expenditure and directs an emergency response 31.
- Defeats the three Uchiha youths confronting him in approximately ten seconds 32.
- Evades the watchers outside the Uchiha compound while pursuing the bats’ source 38.
- Recognizes that the pill’s temporary chakra boost is best spent unlocking a permanent Susanoo form 41.
Water Release and Cooking
- Can produce clean water with Water Release for rinsing rice during Konoha’s water shortage 33.
- Offers to make Sasuke’s favorite tomato fried rice to reassure him 33.
- Accepts Yu’s request for cooking assistance as one of the conditions of their alliance 40.

Notable Quotes
“People live by relying on their knowledge and perceptions, and are bound by them. That is what we call reality. But knowledge and perceptions are vague things. Reality might be nothing more than an illusion. Everyone lives within their own fixed beliefs.” 39

“Mr. Yu, what I'm about to say may be disrespectful, but I want to make it clear beforehand. If one day I truly become Hokage as you wish, I would not want you to become another Danzo...” 40
