History

Uchiha Coup and Protection Agreement

As the Uchiha coup approached, Itachi was already entangled with Konoha’s leadership and the masked figure known to him as Madara. Yi found him absent from the clan’s decisive meeting and suspected the clansmen had excluded him out of distrust. Itachi intercepted Yi afterward, attacking with short blades and genjutsu 3.

Yi proposed cooperation centered on Sasuke’s safety. Itachi initially responded with hostility, but agreed to a second meeting seven days later. There, he tested Yi with fire-wrapped shuriken and Tsukuyomi. Yi’s Flying Thunder God and ability to break the illusion convinced him that this unknown Uchiha could protect Sasuke—provided he disclosed his identity 3.

Discovering that his prospective ally was a child around Sasuke’s age stunned Itachi. Nevertheless, he accepted Yi’s promise to protect Sasuke for five years, until graduation, and later informed him that the massacre would occur in three days. Itachi subsequently left Konoha 4 11.

Dispute over Orochimaru

After Orochimaru’s invasion, Itachi confronted Yi near Konoha over Sasuke’s Cursed Seal. He rejected Yi’s casual description of Orochimaru as a suitable teacher, pointing out that the man wanted their clan’s kekkei genkai 17.

Yi argued that Orochimaru’s body-transfer restrictions would give Sasuke three years of safety and promised that his ocular techniques could locate and retrieve Sasuke immediately. Itachi accepted the demonstration of Yi’s speed but remained worried. Their discussion also introduced the Totsuka Blade as a possible means of removing Orochimaru’s consciousness from Sasuke; Itachi had not yet obtained it 17.

After leaving with Kisame, Itachi warned his partner to avoid provoking Yi, explicitly calling him dangerous 18.

Akatsuki and the Battle with Sasuke

Itachi continued operating alongside Kisame. The two brought the captured Four-Tails jinchūriki to an Akatsuki gathering and participated in its chakra-extraction operation. When Nagato reported that Sasuke had killed Orochimaru and was pursuing him, Itachi remained silent, even as Deidara offered to kill Sasuke 45.

Yi understood the approaching confrontation as Itachi’s planned sacrifice to pass his eyes to Sasuke. By the time Yi reached the battlefield, both brothers lay amid the wreckage. Yi removed Itachi’s eyes and gave them to Obito, instructing him to pass them to Sasuke in fulfillment of Itachi’s wish 45 46.

Survival and the Moon Palace

Itachi survived the battle, and Yi brought him to the Moon Palace. Upon waking, his immediate concern was whether Yi had harmed Sasuke. Yi instead offered him work guarding the palace gates and revealed that Orochimaru had stolen Fugaku’s secretly awakened Mangekyō Sharingan 46.

Itachi chose his father’s recovered eyes and pledged to use Shisui’s eyes to protect Konoha. After seeing the Moon Palace’s peaceful, prosperous community, he decided to stay and offered to guard its gates without pay 47.

Personality

Itachi’s overriding concern is Sasuke’s safety. Merely mentioning Sasuke during their first confrontation provokes an immediate attack, while their later negotiations hinge on whether Yi has both the strength and trustworthiness to protect him. He is willing to entrust that responsibility to someone else, but never treats it casually 3 4.

His usual composure is paired with caution and sharp judgment. He quickly understands how the Totsuka Blade might counter Orochimaru’s body transfer and recognizes Yi’s growing danger well before Kisame does. Despite accepting Yi as an ally, he continues demanding explanations when Sasuke is exposed to risk 17 18.

After his rescue, Itachi shows little interest in Yi’s offer to reveal further secrets once he knows Sasuke is unharmed. His decision to remain at the Moon Palace reflects his attraction to its peaceful life, without abandoning his commitment to Konoha 46 47.
