Background / History

Relationship with Sarutobi and pursuit of the Uchiha

Orochimaru once regarded his teacher, Hiruzen Sarutobi, as a father. That attachment gradually became a desire to kill him; during the Konoha Crush, Orochimaru views death in battle as a fitting end for his aging mentor 15.

His pursuit of the Uchiha bloodline centers on acquiring Sasuke’s body through Living Corpse Reincarnation. Yi’s unusual eyes and space-time techniques also attract his interest, though Yi proves far harder to overpower 11.

Forest of Death bargain

Orochimaru enters the Chunin Exams disguised as a Grass ninja. He places a Cursed Seal on Sasuke and later detects Yi’s concealed surveillance, despite Yi using Kamui to hide 10 17.

When Yi demands that he spare the Third, Orochimaru attacks rather than immediately negotiate. After Yi evades his snakes and repeatedly destroys his replacement bodies, Orochimaru accepts a bargain: he may continue the Konoha Crush Plan, but Sarutobi must survive, and Yi will not prevent him from pursuing Sasuke. Yi also warns him about the Reaper Death Seal 11.

Konoha Crush and punishment

During the invasion, Orochimaru fights Sarutobi inside the Four Violet Flames Formation with the reanimated First and Second Hokage. Forewarned by Yi, he interrupts Sarutobi before the Reaper Death Seal can be completed 14.

He nevertheless attempts to kill his teacher with the Kusanagi Sword. Yi’s concealed Amaterasu seal activates on his hands, forcing him to abandon the burning body and retreat. Yi then pursues him outside Konoha, where Manda, Rashomon gates, and the reanimated Hokage fail to secure his escape 15.

Orochimaru attempts to summon Minato as a final trump card, but the coffin remains empty because Minato’s soul is held by the Reaper Death Seal. Yi subsequently severs both of Orochimaru’s hands and applies special chakra that prevents medical ninjutsu from restoring them 16.

Orochimaru believes this punishment is solely for breaking their bargain. Yi also intends the injury to limit his ability to experiment on Sasuke. Afterward, Yi replaces Itachi as Orochimaru’s most hated enemy 16 17.

Failed treatment and Hiruko’s ambush

Orochimaru seeks Tsunade to treat his injuries, but Yi blocks the attempt. Rather than risk another fight, he withdraws with Kabuto and orders his followers to bring Sasuke from Konoha 20.

After Sasuke fails to arrive in time, Orochimaru changes bodies. He retaliates against Yi by helping Hiruko complete the Chimera Technique early and directing him toward Yi’s Sharingan. His assistance includes capturing kekkei genkai users and supplying a body cultivated from the First’s cells 25 26.

Hiruko dies fighting Yi, but Kabuto retrieves experimental data and samples from the aftermath. Orochimaru later uses that combat data to refine the Chimera Technique he obtained from Hiruko 26 43.

Modified body and the Three-Tails

Over the following two to three years, Orochimaru’s soul remains stable after his body transfer, allowing extensive research. His modified body becomes promising enough that he temporarily places less importance on taking Sasuke’s body. He also develops a black-mist double with a complete consciousness, leaving it to pursue Sasuke while he and Kabuto prepare to capture the Three-Tails for an experiment 42.

At the Three-Tails’ lake, he mocks Yi’s closed eyes as evidence of Mangekyō-induced blindness. Yi instead identifies his transplanted Sharingan, Hashirama cells, and possession of Fugaku’s Mangekyō. Orochimaru’s confidence gives way to shock as Yi exposes those secrets 42.

He displays his perfected Chimera Technique in their ensuing battle, escalating from bone attacks to Sage Transformation, Wood Release, Susanoo, and an armored Eight Branches form. Yi ultimately destroys the combined serpent and Susanoo with Sage Art: True Several Thousand Hands 42 43.

Survival and Sasuke’s betrayal

Orochimaru survives because Twin Demon Attack allows him to carry a spare Chimera-modified body within himself; only one of his two bodies is destroyed. The defeat renews his desire for Sasuke’s body, but leaves him too weak to seize it 44.

Sasuke attacks the injured Orochimaru and then leaves to form Taka. Nagato subsequently reports to Akatsuki that Sasuke has killed Orochimaru 44 45.

Yi also recovers Fugaku’s eyes from Orochimaru. The eyes had been specially cultivated by Orochimaru; Yi modifies them further before giving them to Itachi 46 47.

Personality

Orochimaru approaches powerful bloodlines and unfamiliar techniques with openly possessive curiosity. Yi’s eyes, Flying Thunder God, and Kamui-like abilities fascinate him even after their first fight makes negotiation necessary 11.

His pride grows with his research successes. He boasts that he understands the Sharingan better than Yi, only to become unsettled when Yi identifies his modifications. In battle, repeated counters provoke anger and increasingly reckless escalation 42 43.

Despite that arrogance, he prepares contingencies. He preserves the reanimated Hokage after the invasion, creates a conscious double, and keeps a spare modified body concealed within himself. He also abandons his pursuit of Tsunade when confrontation with Yi would be futile 15 20 42 44.
