Appearance

  • White hair: Described as a white-haired boy during his visit to the Toad Sage 27.
  • Youthful build: The rogue jōnin initially dismiss him and Tsunade as children before recognizing them as the Hokage’s students 43.
  • Height: At their reunion, Yui Hyuga is taller than him 27.
  • Travel attire: During his later encounter with Yui and Nai, he wears an orange-red coat and a forehead protector marked with the character for “oil.” Nai initially describes him as a scruffy old man before remembering the white-haired child she knew 165.

Personality

Jiraiya is boastful, competitive, and eager to demonstrate his strength. At the Academy, Orochimaru’s precise shuriken throwing provokes him into attempting a flashy stunt that misses every target. He later challenges Orochimaru to a duel and becomes frustrated when rain interrupts it. His enthusiasm persists after promotion, when he celebrates so loudly that Tsunade punches him to make him listen to Hiruzen 13 14 46.

His courage is accompanied by dangerous impulsiveness. During the S-rank mission, he initially wants to attack on the strength of his telescope reconnaissance. Learning about the enemy’s sensory barrier makes him realize that charging in could have killed the entire squad, yet he almost immediately attempts another premature advance. He acknowledges that this habit needs to change 40 41.

Despite frequent arguments with his teammates, Jiraiya cares deeply about them. He offers to accompany Orochimaru on a dangerous infiltration, is stunned by his injuries, and later offers to take him to the hospital. His lecherous behavior is also explicit: his intrusive stare angers Yui, prompting him to look away sheepishly and change the subject 27 28 42 44 46.

His later missions show that his impulsiveness remains unresolved. He hesitates to retreat when Ichirō is swallowed by the ground because they are close to obtaining important intelligence, forcing Dan Katō to pull him to safety. He also attempts to chase an invisible attacker until Orochimaru and Dan warn him that doing so would expose him to an ambush 95 98.

Jiraiya is sympathetic toward Yui despite her wanted status. He initially doubts that the former Academy student could have committed the crimes listed in Konoha’s notice and offers to clear her name if she is innocent. His confidence that Konoha can resolve her situation contrasts with her distrust of its leadership. Even while fighting her, he emphasizes that he does not want his friends injured 104 105 106.

His attachment to Dan is particularly visible after Yui abducts him. Jiraiya blames himself for failing to protect his companion and tearfully embraces him when he returns to Konoha. His habitual lewdness nevertheless persists: a remark about Yui’s body during their mission report irritates Hiruzen and helps bring the meeting to an end 116 117.

The Great Toad Sage’s second prophecy gives Jiraiya a broader purpose. He commits to traveling the Shinobi World because his future student is predicted to become its savior during a possible world-ending disaster. During his travels, he remains concerned about other threats, deciding to report a cult’s growing influence while continuing his search for the Child of Prophecy 132 165.

Abilities & Skills

Toad Summoning

Jiraiya uses the Summoning Technique to call toads associated with Mount Myōboku 27 41.

  • Sends a small orange-red toad to gather intelligence from an enemy camp 41.
  • Resummons the injured scout so Tsunade can treat it and the team can hear its report 41.
  • Returns from Mount Myōboku when a toad in Konoha summons him 27.
  • Admits that he does not know whether a Shadow Clone can be summoned; he believes a contract would probably be necessary 28.

Fire Release

Jiraiya’s Fire Release is powerful enough to threaten jōnin opponents, though their Water Release can counter it 43 44.

  • Great Flame Bullet: Expels a blazing fireball toward two opponents trapped in his swamp 44.
  • Fire Dragon Flame Bullet: Uses a stronger attack that is eventually countered by Water Dragon Bullet 44.
  • Opening ambush: His fire attack kills two rogue ninja and leaves another injured, whom he finishes with kunai 43.
  • Training: Credits Hiruzen with teaching him new Fire Release ninjutsu used during the mission 44.
  • Flame Bullet: Attacks Yui while Orochimaru uses Water Shockwave from another direction. Yui reflects both techniques with Eight Trigrams Palm: Rotation, forcing their casters to dodge and causing the attacks to destroy nearby houses 105.

Earth Release

Jiraiya combines defensive terrain manipulation with techniques that restrict enemy movement 41 43 44.

  • Earth-Style Wall: Raises a thick stone wall to block attacks from two jōnin 43.
  • Swamp of the Underworld: Traps opponents in a swamp, then catches them again after they struggle free 43 44.
  • Underground movement: Prepares to burrow underground during the infiltration planning, but Orochimaru stops him because their intelligence is still incomplete 41.
  • Battlefield control: Uses the swamp to hold enemies while attacking with Fire Release and coordinating Tsunade’s finishing strike 44.

Newly Learned Mode

Jiraiya possesses a recently learned mode whose name is not stated in the supplied passages 44 46.

  • Believes he can maintain it for no more than a minute 44.
  • Sits cross-legged and begins meditating before Tsunade interrupts his preparation 44.
  • Chooses teamwork with Tsunade instead of completing its activation 44.

Hair-Manipulation Ninjutsu

Jiraiya can lengthen and harden his white hair for both protection and attack 93 103 105.

  • Ninja Art: Needle Jizo: Extends his hair around Dan Katō’s entire body, leaving no gaps, while Dan’s spirit separates from it to attack enemy ninja 93.
  • Jiraiya’s Thousand-Pound Drop: Descends toward Yui as a white, hedgehog-like mass, preventing her from escaping an alley by jumping between its walls 103.
  • Wild Lion’s Mane Technique: Lengthens and hardens his hair to lash at Yui from behind. Her Byakugan allows her to anticipate and evade the attack 105.

Weapons and Reconnaissance

  • Kunai accuracy: Finishes an injured rogue ninja with kunai to the neck, contrasting with his unsuccessful Academy shuriken stunt 13 43.
  • Visual reconnaissance: Uses a Brass Telescope from a treetop to count six rogue ninja, but fails to detect the additional Kumogakure presence and sensory barrier 40 41.
  • Assessment of enemy affiliation: Questions Red Earth’s claim to be a Kumogakure ninja because of his unusually powerful Earth Release 95.
  • Combat observation: Reports that Yui moves exceptionally quickly even without the Body Flicker Technique 117.

Technique Knowledge and Access

  • Spirit Transformation Technique: Admires Dan Katō’s technique and wishes to learn it, but states that Hiruzen will not allow him to do so. He later identifies Dan as a possible source of instruction for training mental power 91 104.
  • Flying Thunder God Technique: Initially has not heard of the technique when Yui asks him to obtain it. He remembers her request and considers approaching Hiruzen; later, Hiruzen confirms that Jiraiya has asked him to prepare its scroll for a future student. There is no confirmation that Jiraiya has learned the technique himself 104 244.

Combat Limitations

Jiraiya and Orochimaru are outmatched by Yui in their Iron City confrontation. She catches their punches and throws both men away, evades his hair attack, and reflects their coordinated elemental ninjutsu. They consequently rely on distracting her while Dan prepares a technique targeting her mind 105.

The group also recognizes that they have little chance of defeating Ōnoki through a straightforward fight. When the Third Tsuchikage pursues them, Orochimaru advises escape, and Jiraiya warns the others to stop when a massive falling boulder blocks their route 111.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Brass Telescope — Used to observe the enemy camp in the Land of Grass 40.
  • Kunai — Used to finish an opponent during the opening ambush 43.
  • Shuriken — Uses them in Academy target practice; his unauthorized mass throw earns a safety reprimand and a one-credit deduction 13.
  • Sealing scrolls — Hands Tsunade four scrolls containing Kumogakure bodies to preserve as mission evidence 45.
  • “Oil” forehead protector — Worn during his travels; he checks it after Yui and Nai flee from him, puzzled by their reaction to his appearance 165.
  • Orange-red coat — Part of his attire during his search for the Child of Prophecy 165.
  • Flying Thunder God scroll, requested — Asks Hiruzen to prepare the Second Hokage’s technique for a future student. Hiruzen keeps the scroll to give him when he returns to Konoha; its delivery is not shown in the supplied passages 244.

Relationships

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and Hokage. Teaches him Fire Release, recognizes his mission success, approves his jōnin promotion, and assigns him to the Combat Mission Department 44 46 47. Refuses to let him learn the Spirit Transformation Technique. Later receives Jiraiya’s report about Yui and prepares the Flying Thunder God scroll at his request, hoping that a future student may be able to inherit the difficult technique 91 116 117 244.
  • Orochimaru — Academy rival and later teammate. Their arguments contrast Jiraiya’s impulsiveness with Orochimaru’s caution, but Jiraiya is deeply concerned when Orochimaru is injured 13 14 40 41 42 44. They continue working together in the Land of Iron, fighting Red Earth and coordinating against Yui. Jiraiya helps Orochimaru to his feet after she injures his hands, while Orochimaru restrains Jiraiya from pursuing an invisible enemy 95 98 105.
  • Tsunade — Classmate and teammate. Regularly rebukes his boasting, mediates disputes, heals his injured toad scout, and helps him defeat two rogue jōnin 13 40 41 44. Before leaving to travel the Shinobi World, Jiraiya seeks her out to say goodbye and explains the second prophecy. Her warning not to die encourages him 132.
  • Yui Hyuga — Former Academy classmate. Offers her ninjutsu guidance and answers her question about summoning, although his lecherous staring strains their reunion 27 28. Later pursues her as a Konoha fugitive while offering to help clear her name if she is innocent. He directs her toward Dan for mental-power training and remembers her request for the Flying Thunder God Technique. Their relationship deteriorates further when she abducts Dan, and she subsequently flees another encounter because she believes Jiraiya remains determined to bring her back to Konoha 104 105 106 112 165.
  • Toad Sage — Gives him a prophecy about a woman who will alter his destiny and tells him to return in five years for another prophecy 27. The later prophecy warns of upheaval and a possible world-ending disaster, identifying Jiraiya’s future student as the savior and prompting his journey 132.
  • Fukasaku — Arranges his return to Konoha. Jiraiya politely declines his invitation to stay for Shima’s bug meal 27.
  • Yamada Hideko — Academy instructor. Reprimands him for unsafe shuriken throwing and supervises his interrupted sparring match with Orochimaru 13 14.
  • Dan Katō — Mission companion and close friend. Jiraiya admires his Spirit Transformation Technique and protects his vacant body with Needle Jizo. Dan pulls him away from the collapsing ground during Ichirō’s interrogation and helps discourage a dangerous pursuit. Jiraiya feels responsible for Dan’s abduction and tearfully welcomes him back to Konoha 91 93 95 98 112 116.
  • Mifune — Samurai ally during the Land of Iron investigation. Jiraiya and his companions return the injured Mifune to Iron City, wait for him to recover so they can learn more about the enemy, and later seek out the hospital where he is being treated 101 103 108.
  • Nai Hyuga — Former Academy acquaintance. During a later encounter, she initially fails to recognize him, then remembers the white-haired boy from her childhood. She supports Yui’s decision to flee when told that he might take Yui back to Konoha 165.
  • Ōnoki — Enemy encountered while the group is taking Yui toward Konoha. The Third Tsuchikage demands that they hand her over as a thief, then pursues them; Jiraiya and the others recognize the danger posed by a Kage-level opponent 110 111 112.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Academy Rivalry

Jiraiya first appears among the notable children in Yui’s Academy class. His early scenes establish his rivalry with Orochimaru: he responds to Orochimaru’s successful target practice with his self-named “Shuriken All-Out Throwing Technique,” only to miss completely and draw laughter from the class. Their subsequent sparring match is cancelled by heavy rain before it begins 10 13 14.

Prophecy and Reunion with Yui

At Mount Myōboku, the Toad Sage foretells that a white-skinned woman with two horns and glowing blue eyes will bring a tremendous change to Jiraiya’s destiny. The sage also says that Jiraiya will return in five years to receive a new prophecy 27.

Upon returning to Konoha, Jiraiya briefly considers whether Yui fits the description, but dismisses the possibility because she lacks the horns and blue eyes. He keeps the prophecy private. The toad’s summoning of Jiraiya gives Yui an opportunity to memorize the technique’s hand seals, while his subsequent advice directs her attention toward summoning contracts 27 28.

S-Rank Mission in the Land of Grass

Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru undertake a mission to eliminate six rogue ninja as part of their qualification for jōnin. Their scouts reveal a larger threat: Kumogakure ninja are also present, and a sensory barrier surrounds the camp. Jiraiya’s injured toad warns that the barrier extends approximately 500 meters from its center 40 41.

After further reconnaissance, Orochimaru infiltrates alone to eliminate the barrier operator. Jiraiya and Tsunade attack the rogue ninja, splitting the surviving jōnin between them. Jiraiya holds two opponents with Earth Release and Fire Release until Tsunade helps finish them 42 43 44.

They then find Orochimaru gravely wounded. Once Tsunade stabilizes him, Jiraiya helps preserve the enemy bodies and accompanies the team back to Konoha. Hiruzen accepts their report and rewards all three with jōnin promotion and access to two A-rank techniques each 44 45 46.

Following their promotion, Jiraiya and Orochimaru are assigned to the Combat Mission Department, while Tsunade is assigned to Konoha Hospital. Jiraiya notices that Orochimaru has remained behind in Hiruzen’s office and returns to wait for him, with Tsunade reminding him that both men are invited to her home that evening 47.

Land of Iron Investigation

While traveling with Orochimaru and Dan Katō, Jiraiya becomes lost in a deserted town after the group forgets to bring a map. They pursue a masked woman in hopes of obtaining directions. When they find her in a shop, Jiraiya challenges her claim that she was not avoiding them, but eventually apologizes for their pursuit. She directs them to the shopkeeper before flying away when Dan continues questioning her. Orochimaru’s observations lead them to identify her as Yui, and the group resumes its intended journey to the Land of Iron 84 85 86.

During their investigation of a ninja-tool convoy, Jiraiya praises Dan’s newly learned Spirit Transformation Technique and expresses envy that Hiruzen will not let him learn it. In a subsequent battle, he uses Needle Jizo to protect Dan’s body while his spirit disrupts enemy ninja preparing a powerful Lightning Release attack 91 93.

The group attempts to question Ichirō about the ninja involved, but the interrogation is interrupted when the ground opens beneath him. Jiraiya lingers in hopes of preserving their chance to obtain information, and Dan pulls him to safety. Red Earth emerges in Ichirō’s place and claims to be from Kumogakure, a claim Jiraiya questions because of his Earth Release 95.

Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Dan, and Mifune defeat Red Earth, but an explosive kunai from an unseen attacker detonates against him and injures Orochimaru. Jiraiya spots the attacker before he disappears and tries to pursue, only to be stopped by his companions’ warnings about invisibility and ambush. They return to Iron City with the injured Mifune, where Jiraiya suspects the samurai are keeping them under surveillance but understands their caution 98 101.

Pursuit and Capture of Yui

In Iron City, Jiraiya joins Orochimaru and Dan in cornering Yui. He blocks an attempted escape from an alley with his Thousand-Pound Drop and then pursues her across the rooftops and streets 103 104.

During the chase, he asks whether the wanted notice accusing her of killing Hyuga Feng and Ikuko Hyuga and defecting from Konoha is true. Yui acknowledges killing Feng. When she asks about ninjutsu that can train mental power, Jiraiya suggests that Dan may know a suitable method. He offers to help her return to Konoha and clear her name if she is innocent, but she distrusts the village leadership and teasingly asks him to obtain the Second Hokage’s Flying Thunder God Technique 104.

The pursuit becomes a direct confrontation. Jiraiya attacks Yui from behind with Wild Lion’s Mane Technique, helps the injured Orochimaru, and agrees to occupy her while Dan prepares the Spirit Transformation Technique. Yui overpowers the two men in taijutsu and reflects their combined Fire and Water Release attacks, destroying nearby houses. She then abruptly surrenders as Dan’s spirit approaches 105.

Jiraiya welcomes her surrender and repeats his promise to help if she is innocent. Samurai investigating the damage escort the group to the General’s Residence, prompting his concern that they might be jailed. After examining Konoha’s wanted scroll and confirming Yui’s identity, the general releases them and decides to seek compensation from the Hokage instead. Jiraiya then asks where Mifune is recovering and leads the group to Iron City’s hospital 106 107 108.

Ōnoki’s Pursuit and Dan’s Abduction

After the group leaves Iron City, Ōnoki intercepts them within the Land of Fire’s border and demands that they surrender Yui, whom he identifies as a thief. Faced with the Third Tsuchikage, Jiraiya asks Orochimaru how they should proceed; Orochimaru concludes that escape is their only realistic option. During the pursuit, Jiraiya warns the group to stop before a massive boulder blocks their path 110 111.

During the confrontation, Dan’s separated spirit suddenly withdraws. Jiraiya realizes something has happened to him, and the group sees Yui flying away with his unconscious body. Jiraiya protests that Dan is their friend, but she takes him away 112.

Back in Konoha, Orochimaru reports the incident to Hiruzen, while Jiraiya feels guilty for failing to protect Dan. Hiruzen declares their ninja-tool mission complete and prepares to send ANBU to search for the missing man. Dan unexpectedly returns before that search proceeds, and Jiraiya embraces him in tears. The group then reports Yui’s abilities, including her overwhelming taijutsu and wind-powered flight. Jiraiya adds that she is exceptionally fast even without Body Flicker, though his lewd comments irritate Hiruzen 116 117.

Second Prophecy and Journey Through the Shinobi World

Jiraiya later receives the promised second prophecy from the Great Toad Sage. It warns that the Shinobi World faces great upheaval and a possible world-ending disaster, with Jiraiya’s future student destined to become its savior. He decides to travel the world and tells Tsunade that they may not see each other for many years. Her solemn warning not to die gives him encouragement as he departs 132.

During his travels, he approaches Yui and Nai while they are seeking a natural hot spring. Yui recognizes him and immediately flees with Nai, fearing that he will return them to Konoha as S-rank missing-nin. Jiraiya fails to recognize the reason for their flight and assumes that they have mistaken him for someone else. He calls after them using his self-proclaimed title, “Toad Sage of Mount Myōboku,” which only makes them run faster 165.

After losing sight of the women, Jiraiya realizes that they are heading toward a cultists’ hideout. He decides to report the cult’s expanding influence and continues searching for the Child of Prophecy rather than following them further 165.

Request for the Flying Thunder God Technique

Hiruzen later reveals that Jiraiya has asked him to prepare the Flying Thunder God Technique for a future student. The request follows Yui’s earlier challenge that he obtain the technique, but the later passage does not identify the intended student 104 244.

Hiruzen examines the scroll and recalls that even he failed to grasp the technique’s basics. He considers it dangerous for anyone without the necessary aptitude, but hopes Jiraiya may find a student capable of inheriting it. He keeps the scroll on his person to hand over when Jiraiya returns to Konoha 244.
