Background / History

Meeting Yui in Shikkotsu Forest

Yui encounters Katsuyu after an uncontracted Summoning Technique carries her through spatial turbulence into Shikkotsu Forest. Initially mistaking Katsuyu’s enormous body for a white mountain range, Yui recognizes her on approaching. Katsuyu accepts Yui’s explanation that she learned about her from an ancient scroll and becomes friendlier after recognizing her as a Konoha ninja 35.

Katsuyu warns that spatial turbulence can trap travelers for thousands of years. From Yui’s departure date, she estimates that one year has passed outside the rift. She identifies Yui as only the second human to reach Shikkotsu Forest in a thousand years, but angrily refuses to discuss the earlier visitor 35.

Eager to train a human senjutsu user after the Mount Myōboku toads’ boasting, Katsuyu offers Yui instruction. Yui prioritizes finding her missing friend in Konoha, agreeing to return for training afterward. Katsuyu explains that a summoning contract will allow her to arrange Yui’s return, although they must wait until her clone is summoned to Konoha 35 36.

Katsuyu heals Yui’s wounds and carries her into the forest’s interior. Her main body later meets Yui in a human transformation, welcomes Xiao You as a companion, and presents the Slug Summoning Contract. Yui signs her name in blood after Tsunade’s entry 36 37 38.

Attempting to Remove the Caged Bird Seal

When Yui proposes removing her Caged Bird Seal, Katsuyu recommends learning Shikkotsu Forest senjutsu first as a safer alternative. Yui rejects the years-long delay and instead plans to enter suspended animation, tricking the seal into recognizing her death 38 39.

Katsuyu initially refuses to participate. Concern that Yui will attempt the procedure alone ultimately persuades her to help, with a fifteen-second limit. Examining Yui’s eyes, she finds the seal intertwined with her brain and optic nerves and warns that preserving the Byakugan will be difficult 39.

After testing Acid Mist Healing as a revival method, Katsuyu monitors Yui’s deathlike state and protects her eyes. When the forehead seal begins fading, the seals attached to the eyes attempt to destroy the Byakugan. Katsuyu increases her healing output until it outpaces the damage 40 47.

The seal disappears temporarily but reforms after the procedure. Its new form is substantially weaker, though Yui’s Byakugan blind spot remains. Katsuyu believes it may no longer be able to damage Yui’s eyes, but firmly refuses another attempt because repeated suspended animation could kill her. Before Yui’s departure, she gives her a mysterious black scroll to read only when alone 48.

Arranging the Return to Konoha

Summoned by Tsunade in the Land of Grass, Katsuyu helps treat Orochimaru’s wounds and asks for a favor afterward. Once Tsunade returns to Konoha, Katsuyu requests chakra to bring Yui back from Shikkotsu Forest. Tsunade recognizes Yui as a former Academy classmate and agrees 45 47.

Tsunade later becomes too drunk to help. After ensuring she is safely in bed, Katsuyu accepts Mito Uzumaki’s offer of assistance. She asks Mito to supply chakra for summoning two individuals from Shikkotsu Forest, describing one as her friend and the other as a Konoha ninja 49 50.

Katsuyu estimates that the procedure may require as much chakra as summoning her main body. Her evasive explanation makes Mito suspect she is withholding something, but Mito agrees and prepares to draw on the Nine-Tails’ chakra 50.

Mito activates Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, and Katsuyu creates a summoning formation large enough to extend beyond the courtyard. The technique succeeds after consuming the Nine-Tails chakra Mito supplies and much of Mito’s own chakra, bringing Yui and Katsuyu’s human-form main body to Konoha 51.

The main body insists that Yui call her Shobue and introduces herself to Mito as a guest elder of Shikkotsu Forest, rather than admitting that she is Katsuyu. The small summoned slug supports this explanation, although Mito remains uncertain. Yui immediately leaves to search for Nai, while Mito goes to fetch the Third Hokage to welcome Shobue. After privately discussing Mito’s suspicions with her main body, the small slug merges back into her 51 52.

Shobue subsequently maintains the guest-elder explanation when speaking with Hiruzen Sarutobi. She claims that Katsuyu arranged for her to accompany Yui and that she intends to stay in Konoha for a while because life in the forest can become dull. Hiruzen accepts her account and offers to arrange lodging 54.

Rescuing Nai and Confronting Hyuga Feng

When Yui finds Nai with severe injuries and her eyes gouged out, she summons Katsuyu for help. The summoned Katsuyu cannot heal Nai completely, but can keep her alive. At Yui’s request, she takes Nai back to Shikkotsu Forest so that Yui and Shobue can seek a solution 60.

Shobue later fights Hyuga Feng to protect Yui. Her corrosive acid threatens him, while his attempts to throw her or injure her with Gentle Fist and increasingly powerful Eight Trigrams attacks fail. She explains that her mountain-scale true body and nonhuman chakra-point arrangement make his assumptions about her human appearance ineffective 65.

Feng escalates to the Byakugan Beam, whose energy Shobue recognizes as different from ordinary chakra and dangerous to her. She uses Slug Division to send a clone to move Yui out of its path, then raises a nature-energy shield. The sustained beam breaks through the shield and apparently dissolves Shobue into green particles, while her clone confirms that Yui is safe. Her later appearances establish that the attack did not kill her 65 115.

Teaching Shikkotsu Forest Senjutsu

After obtaining Dan Katō’s Spirit Transformation Technique and finding a possible means of strengthening her mental energy, Yui prioritizes Sage Mode training over her planned trip to the Land of Whirlpools. She summons Shobue and returns to Shikkotsu Forest with her help. Shobue warmly welcomes her, embraces her, removes her mask, and checks whether she has been injured 115.

Katsuyu also encourages Tsunade to attempt Shikkotsu Forest’s Sage Mode, invoking Jiraiya’s success with Mount Myōboku’s senjutsu. Tsunade complains that she was promised a meeting with Katsuyu’s main body rather than training, but the small slug asks her to persevere. At this stage, Yui reports that she has already trained for three years without mastering the basics 117 118.

When Yui first successfully enters Sage Mode, Shobue congratulates her and notices the small horns on her forehead. She explains that horns are not a normal feature of Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode and cannot say whether they will disappear. She advises Yui to delay awakening Nai until her senjutsu is more reliable and plans further instruction over the following months 124.

Shobue takes Yui to a temple and gives her a wooden box containing an offensive senjutsu technique whose writing is readable in Sage Mode. She admits that she cannot teach that particular technique, but clarifies that it is unnecessary for Nai’s awakening: the forest’s healing senjutsu is sufficient. Over the next year, Yui masters the forest’s white-slug and blue-slug techniques and extends her Sage Mode to twenty minutes 125.

Tsunade ultimately returns to Konoha without mastering Sage Mode, although she gains medical-ninjutsu knowledge during her stay. To protect Yui’s presence in the forest, she tells Hiruzen that Katsuyu supplied the insights into technique development that actually came from Yui 131.

Guiding Nai’s Awakening

Before Yui attempts to awaken Nai, Shobue explains that Nai’s continued sleep is deliberate and that Yui must enter her mind through a mental-healing technique infused with senjutsu chakra. Only someone close to Nai can safely reach her. Shobue surrounds the pair with green mist, warns that the outcome depends on Yui holding on, and leaves them undisturbed with Xiao You 126.

After Nai awakens, Yui introduces her to Shobue as the Slug Sage of Shikkotsu Forest. Shobue suggests that they return to her house before nightfall. She subsequently helps Yui and Nai leave the forest through summoning transport, with an outside Katsuyu body receiving them and returning once they have safely disembarked 131 133.

When Yui becomes unable to retain newly gathered senjutsu chakra, she urgently summons Katsuyu and asks to see Shobue. Katsuyu immediately returns to Shikkotsu Forest to arrange the transport, allowing Yui to seek her main body’s help 188.

Shobue later teaches Mind Link, an ability connecting the consciousnesses of an original and a Split Body, to Yui and her Split Body in Shikkotsu Forest. She explains that it is one of Katsuyu’s abilities and that she expects Yui to find it useful. During their first demonstrated connection, Shobue checks that Yui can perceive events through the Split Body’s eyes. Yui subsequently names that body Yuki Hyuga, recognizing her individual identity 267.

Appearance

  • Slug form: White body marked with blue patterns; the enormous form Yui first encounters resembles a smooth mountain range 35.
  • Main-body scale: Katsuyu states that her true main body is approximately five times larger than that mountain-sized form 36.
  • Surface texture: Despite Yui’s expectations, the clone carrying her has a smooth, soft head rather than a sticky one 36.
  • Human transformation: A tall, slender woman wearing an elaborate flower wreath and a magnificent pale blue-green kimono, with a huge green scroll strapped to her back 37.
  • Voice: Gentle and distinctly female, softening further when she recognizes Yui’s connection to Konoha 35.
  • Shobue identity: Retains an elegant, dignified kimono-clad human appearance when presenting herself in Konoha as a guest elder of Shikkotsu Forest 51.

Personality

Katsuyu is welcoming, compassionate, and protective. She heals Yui before their contract is signed, condemns the Hyuga Clan’s treatment of its Branch Family, and continues helping despite frustration with Yui’s dangerous decisions. Her refusal to repeat the seal-removal procedure places Yui’s survival above the possibility of a complete cure 36 39 48.

She also has a playful and competitive side. She teases Xiao You by revealing her slug form and becomes eager to recruit Yui after the toads boast about their own Sage Mode student. Although addressed as the Slug Sage, she dismisses the importance of titles and prefers that Xiao You simply call her Katsuyu 35 37.

Her clones address partners respectfully as “Lady Yui” and “Lady Tsunade.” With Yui, she is unusually talkative; with Mito, she is deferential but evasive about the full demands of her planned summoning 36 45 50.

As Shobue, she deliberately conceals her identity as Katsuyu’s main body, insists on the new name, and worries that Mito still suspects the truth. She finds conversations with her own divided bodies strange, although she says she has grown accustomed to them over the years 51 52.

Her confidence can become openly teasing in combat: she mocks Feng’s inability to move or injure her. Nevertheless, she becomes cautious when his Byakugan Beam threatens her and prioritizes removing Yui from danger over avoiding the attack herself 65.

Her bond with Yui becomes increasingly affectionate and familiar. She embraces her on her return, fusses over possible injuries, and combines playful teasing with serious guidance when Yui’s Sage Mode produces unexplained horns. She also catches Yui when she falters, although Yui conceals the true cause of her forehead pain 115 124.

Abilities & Skills

Healing and Medical Assessment

Katsuyu uses healing chakra both to treat injuries and to examine the body 36 39.

  • Heals Yui’s remaining wounds while carrying her through Shikkotsu Forest 36.
  • Determines Yui’s bone age and estimates that her chakra reserves are three or four times those of most people her age 36.
  • Examines the Caged Bird Seal’s connection to Yui’s brain and optic nerves 39.
  • Protects the Byakugan by healing faster than the seal can destroy its structure; this weakens rather than permanently removes the seal 47 48.
  • Assists Tsunade in treating Orochimaru by attaching small bodies to his wounds 45.
  • Keeps the severely injured Nai alive, although the summoned body cannot heal her completely 60.
  • Guides Yui in using senjutsu-infused mental healing to enter Nai’s mind and awaken her, emphasizing the importance of their close relationship 126.
  • Can provide vitality rather than merely repair injuries. Yui identifies Katsuyu and Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode as sources capable of replenishing vitality, unlike ordinary medical ninjutsu 224.

Acid Mist Healing

Acid Mist Healing is a senjutsu technique that stimulates cellular activity. Unlike Katsuyu’s gentler healing methods, its stimulation causes intense stinging and numbness 40.

  • Yui confirms that its stimulation can serve as the means to wake her from suspended animation 40.
  • Katsuyu explains that Yui could potentially learn it after mastering sage chakra 40.
  • Katsuyu cannot use Lightning Release, prompting her to test this technique as an alternative 40.

Body Division

Katsuyu can split smaller slug bodies from her larger forms 35 45.

  • Separates a body small enough to converse with Yui while she hovers nearby 35.
  • Divides into tiny bodies to cover Orochimaru’s wounds during treatment 45.
  • Maintains a clone outside Shikkotsu Forest whose presence in Konoha is necessary for her proposed reverse-summoning route 36.
  • Can merge a separated slug back into her human-transformed main body 52.
  • Uses Slug Division during Feng’s attack to send a clone to move Yui out of the Byakugan Beam’s path 65.

The Splitting Technique is later identified as one of Katsuyu’s innate senjutsu and part of the white-slug branch of Shikkotsu Forest’s teachings. As learned by Yui, it can regenerate cells to produce an independently conscious second body or disperse the user into countless cells to evade an attack before reassembling. Yui describes the resulting duplicate as another original body rather than an ordinary clone 125 146.

Transformation Technique

Katsuyu learned the Transformation Technique from ninja and uses it to meet Yui in human form 37.

  • Can selectively reveal her underlying form, turning an arm white and enlarged before separating a small slug from it 37.
  • Uses her human transformation to maintain the Shobue persona in Konoha, presenting herself as a guest elder rather than Katsuyu’s main body 51 54.

Senjutsu Instruction

Katsuyu offers to teach the senjutsu of Shikkotsu Forest 35 36.

  • Describes its method as gentler than those of Mount Myōboku and Ryūchi Cave and states that learners will not be assimilated 38.
  • Estimates training at two or three years for a talented learner, seven or eight years for a less talented one, or potentially more than a decade 38.
  • Proposes Shikkotsu Forest’s Sage Mode as a safer means of undoing Yui’s Caged Bird Seal 38.
  • Encourages Tsunade to attempt Sage Mode despite her reluctance, citing the achievements of her fellow contractor Jiraiya 117.
  • Recognizes that Yui’s horns are not a standard feature of Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode, but cannot explain whether they will disappear 124.
  • Teaches the forest’s two main branches: white slug, including the innate Splitting Technique and Toothpaste Acid, and blue slug, whose healing arts are central to awakening Nai 125.
  • Advises Yui to gain reliable control of senjutsu before attempting Nai’s awakening and supervises the eventual procedure 124 126.
  • Supplies a separate offensive technique in a wooden box but admits that she cannot teach it herself 125.

Summoning and Reverse Summoning

Katsuyu’s contracts allow her to cooperate with human summoners and arrange transport between Shikkotsu Forest and Konoha 36 38 47.

  • Confirms that Yui can contract with her despite already having another summoning partner 36.
  • Requires only a name written in blood to sign her summoning scroll 38.
  • Needs outside chakra when her summoned body lacks enough power to perform the transport 47 50.
  • Successfully summons Yui and her main body to Konoha using chakra supplied by Mito in Nine-Tails Chakra Mode 51.
  • Helps Yui return to Shikkotsu Forest to resume training 115.
  • Coordinates the transport of both Yui and Nai out of the forest, with an outside slug body receiving them 133.
  • Responds immediately when Yui urgently requests transport to consult Shobue about her inability to retain senjutsu chakra 188.

Corrosive Secretions and Limitations

  • The corrosive liquid in Shikkotsu Forest’s outer swamps is Katsuyu’s spit, placed there to keep the neighboring toads away. She admits she cannot beat them 35.
  • Tsunade considers Katsuyu unsuitable for reconnaissance because she moves slowly; Jiraiya emphasizes her value as a healer instead 41.
  • Shobue uses corrosive acid offensively against Hyuga Feng. He regards it as unusually dangerous and suspects that it may be a kekkei genkai, although this is his interpretation rather than a confirmed classification 65.
  • Toothpaste Acid is identified as one of Katsuyu’s two innate senjutsu and a white-slug technique that Yui later masters 125.

Physical Resilience and Nature-Energy Defense

In human form, Shobue retains physical properties tied to her immense slug body rather than those of an ordinary human. Feng cannot throw her, and his physical strikes and Gentle Fist sequences fail to injure her 65.

  • Her true body’s mountain-like scale makes her effectively immovable during Feng’s attacks 65.
  • Her chakra points are unlike a human’s, undermining the assumptions behind his Gentle Fist targeting 65.
  • Can erect a shield of nature energy 65.
  • Recognizes the Byakugan Beam as a threat whose power is not ordinary chakra. Its sustained attack corrodes and shatters her shield, demonstrating a limit to that defense 65.

Mind Link connects the consciousnesses of an original body and a Split Body. Shobue identifies it as one of Katsuyu’s abilities and teaches it to Yui and her Split Body 267.

  • Allows the original to perceive events through the Split Body’s senses in real time 267.
  • A one-way connection allows one side to perceive the other’s thoughts without consent 267.
  • If both sides learn the technique, either can block the connection 267.

Shape Concealment Instruction

The black scroll given to Yui contains Ninja Art: Shape Concealment Technique. Yui learns it after returning to Konoha 48 52.

  • Uses mental energy rather than chakra to alter appearance and conceal the user’s presence 52.
  • Is particularly useful against sensory abilities such as the Byakugan 52.
  • Enables Yui to travel through Konoha disguised as a black-haired, black-eyed young woman 52.

Equipment / Items

  • Slug Summoning Contract scroll — A huge green scroll carried on her back in human form. It contains the names of Tsunade, Hashirama Senju, and earlier deceased summoners; Yui adds her name after Tsunade’s 37 38.
  • Black scroll — A gift Katsuyu gives Yui, insisting that she keep it and read it only when alone. It is later revealed to contain the mental-energy-based Shape Concealment Technique 48 52.
  • Additional summoning scroll — Katsuyu tells Yui that another of her summoning scrolls is held by Konoha’s Senju Clan 185.
  • Wooden box containing offensive senjutsu — Given to Yui at a temple in Shikkotsu Forest. Its writing can be read in Sage Mode, but Shobue cannot teach the contained technique and says it is unnecessary for awakening Nai 125.

Relationships

  • Yui Hyuga — Summoning partner and senjutsu student. Katsuyu admires her resolve, helps weaken her Caged Bird Seal, and arranges her return to Konoha while resisting further life-threatening experiments. As Shobue, she becomes an affectionate mentor, guides her successful Sage Mode training, supports her attempt to awaken Nai, and teaches Mind Link to her and her Split Body 35 36 38 48 115 124 125 126 267.
  • Tsunade — Summoning partner and fellow healer. Katsuyu assists her treatment of Orochimaru, cares for her when drunk, and requests her chakra to retrieve Yui. She later encourages Tsunade’s unsuccessful Sage Mode training. Tsunade gains medical knowledge during her stay and uses Katsuyu’s name to conceal Yui’s contribution to her technique development when reporting to Hiruzen 45 47 49 117 131.
  • Xiao You — Welcomed as a companion. Katsuyu playfully reveals her slug form and asks Xiao You to address her by name rather than title. Xiao You later accompanies Shobue out of the cave while Yui begins Nai’s mental-healing procedure 37 126.
  • Hashirama Senju — Previous summoner whose name appears on Katsuyu’s contract scroll. Katsuyu states that all summoners preceding Tsunade have died. His contract does not establish that he learned Shikkotsu Forest senjutsu; Mito later identifies Yui as the first user of that senjutsu she has personally seen 37 185.
  • Mito Uzumaki — Respected helper who supplies Nine-Tails chakra and her own chakra to complete the summoning of Yui and Shobue. Katsuyu conceals her main body’s identity behind the guest-elder persona, leaving Mito suspicious but welcoming 49 50 51 52.
  • Nai Hyuga — Patient and later guest of Shikkotsu Forest. Katsuyu preserves her life after Yui finds her severely injured, takes her to the forest, and guides Yui in the senjutsu-based procedure that awakens her. Shobue welcomes Nai after her recovery and helps arrange her departure with Yui 60 126 131 133.
  • Yuki Hyuga — Yui’s independently conscious Split Body. Shobue teaches the consciousness-linking ability Mind Link to Yui and the Split Body, whom Yui subsequently names Yuki 267.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Receives Shobue as a visiting guest elder. She conceals her identity as Katsuyu’s main body, and he offers to arrange housing for her in Konoha 54.
  • Hyuga Feng — Opponent fought to protect Yui. His taijutsu fails against Shobue’s nonhuman body, but his Byakugan Beam overcomes her nature-energy shield 65.
  • Orochimaru — Patient treated jointly by Katsuyu and Tsunade after the Land of Grass mission 45.
  • Nawaki — Katsuyu offers to heal his facial injury after Tsunade kicks him; he declines 49.
  • Mount Myōboku’s toads — Rivals whose boasting motivates her search for a senjutsu student. She uses the forest’s corrosive outer swamps to keep them away 35.
