| Access to Tobirama’s Water Release techniques | 183 | Mito gives her a scroll of the Second Hokage’s Water Release techniques, encouraging her to adapt them into Ice Release. This is an instructional opportunity rather than immediate mastery. |
| Rotation proficiency | 213 | Uses Rotation to shield Yui from falling debris during Danzo’s ambush. |
| Nine-Tails jinchūriki and chakra access | 223 229 231 233 | Proceeds with the transfer, confronts the Nine-Tails in the sealing space, and later reports that it willingly lets her use its chakra. Demonstrates chakra arms and a small Tailed Beast Bomb. |
| Tailed-beast-supported elemental attacks | 233 242 | Uses an Ice Wall, the Second Hokage’s improved Water Dragon Bullet, and Ice Mist with greatly increased chakra resources. Her Water Release surpasses an ordinary jōnin’s output, though this does not establish superiority over the Third Raikage. |

| Invisibility-assisted flight | 342 | Activates invisibility and Flying Ninjutsu while escaping the tower; transports Orochimaru by rope. |
| Nine-tailed chakra manifestation | 354 | Grief and fury produce a dark-red chakra manifestation with nine tails and a head-sized Tailed Beast Bomb. Kazama Ya intercepts her before the bomb strikes him. |
Background / History
Fabricated Hyuga identity
Nai is initially presented as a Main Family orphan whose parents have died. Unlike Yui, she retains her privileged status and is taught to control the Caged Bird Seal. Feng regards her as the clan’s greatest genius in a century and considers her a potential successor if he has no children of his own 1 6.
Her family history is later exposed as a fabrication. Feng found her as an orphan with promising chakra talent, supplied her name, status, and supposed parents, and used her as a vessel for Byakugan-fusion research. The eyes she believed were hers had belonged to his younger sister, who died in childhood 24.
Her eventual development of Ice Release does not settle her biological ancestry. Yoru Yuki invokes the shared ability to suggest that she could be recognized as a lost Yuki Clan descendant, but Nai rejects his appeal, and no independent confirmation follows 182.
Friendship with Yui
During Yui’s branding ceremony, an elder orders Nai to activate Yui’s Caged Bird Seal. Frightened and unwilling to hurt her, Nai tries to minimize the pain. Yui recognizes her restraint and exaggerates her suffering so Nai can ease the seal without drawing the elders’ disapproval 1.
Nai later approaches Yui to apologize. Learning that Yui’s screams were an act relieves her, and the two become friends. Nai identifies Yui’s refusal to accept her fate and shares her own ambition: abolishing the Main Family–Branch Family division 3.
Their friendship quickly becomes a training partnership. Nai gives Yui an old Hyuga Chakra Method manual and teaches her Gentle Fist despite the restrictions imposed on branch-family girls. She subsequently petitions Feng to let Yui attend the Academy, securing an assessment that leads to Yui’s admission 4 6 8.
Academy years and graduation
Nai and Yui study and train together for six years. Although both are capable of graduating earlier, Nai refuses to leave without Yui, who remains enrolled to postpone her compulsory return to the branch family. They graduate together in Konoha Year 26 17.
After graduation, Nai returns to teach basic stances to Feng’s sons, Hiashi and Hizashi. Seeing Hizashi’s Caged Bird Seal renews her determination to become stronger and eradicate the seal 18 20.
Betrayal and captivity
Feng prevents Nai from joining a village squad by claiming that she is terminally ill. He secures the Hokage’s agreement to keep both girls within the clan by offering five branch-family sensory ninja for ANBU service 19.
Ikuko then escorts Nai to Feng under the pretext that he needs her help. Nai agrees without suspecting a trap. Sano injects her with a blue substance, and Feng orders her placed in nutrient solution for the next stage of his Byakugan experiment. Her last conscious thoughts are of Yui 21.
When Nai awakens, her eyes have been removed. Feng explains her fabricated identity and his use of her as an experimental vessel. The betrayal destroys her faith in reforming the clan and briefly makes her fear that Yui, too, was part of his deception 24.
Reassured that Yui is real, Nai protests Feng’s intention to use her friend to continue the clan’s bloodline. Her defiance provokes him into ordering Sano to throw her into the crystal sphere’s “white water,” which converts matter into nutrients. Nai experiences intense itching upon entering the liquid. Her survival is later confirmed when Yui finds her in the laboratory 25 58 59.
Concealment of her disappearance
Yui searches Nai’s usual locations and asks Hiruzen whether she has left on a mission. Although an ANBU report has exposed Feng’s experiments, Hiruzen withholds the truth, fearing that Yui would confront the clan head. He falsely tells her that Nai may be away for months 25 26.
Ikuko later contradicts this account by claiming that Nai remains in the clan teaching the heirs. Her earlier remark that Nai no longer needs looking after, followed by her evasiveness, convinces Yui that something has happened. Finding Nai remains one of Yui’s priorities as she escapes confinement and reaches Shikkotsu Forest 30 33 36.
A year after Nai’s disappearance, Yui secretly returns to the Hyuga compound. Nai’s formerly tidy room is dilapidated, dusty, and covered in cobwebs; only a ninja-tool pouch remains in a drawer. Hiashi and Hizashi confirm that they have not seen her for a year and recall Ikuko taking her away during a Gentle Fist lesson. Their account directs Yui’s suspicions back toward Feng 53 55.
Rescue and rogue-ninja designation
Yui finds Nai in the laboratory, where Ikuko seals her back inside the crystal sphere. Rather than concentrate solely on defeating Ikuko, Yui destroys the sphere with Water Release, flooding the laboratory and releasing Nai. Ikuko interrupts Yui’s attempt to reach her, and Yui subsequently kills Ikuko while declaring that she will settle Nai’s grievances 58 59.
During the confrontation with Feng, Yui recognizes his eyes as Nai’s former pair. After his death, she retrieves them from his corpse. Nai’s vital signs stabilize, but Shobue warns that she remains seriously injured and may have suffered mental damage 63 68.
Hyuga Taku sees Yui fleeing with Shobue and suspects that Shobue is Nai. Despite not positively identifying the second woman, he issues a wanted order accusing Yui and Nai of assassinating Feng and stealing his Byakugan. The two are initially designated A-rank rogue ninja, then listed as S-rank. Public notices accuse them of killing Feng, stealing two pairs of Byakugan, and defecting, even though Nai is unconscious during the aftermath 68 69 71 72.
Prolonged unconsciousness and awakening
Katsuyu heals Nai’s body, but severe mental damage prevents her from waking. Shobue proposes that Shikkotsu Forest’s mind-focused Sage Mode may offer a way to reach her. Yui commits to learning it for even a chance of saving Nai 71.
Years later, Nai remains on an Ice Bed in a cave. Tsunade visits her after hearing Yui’s account of Feng’s abuse and the concealment of her disappearance; witnessing Nai’s condition convinces Tsunade that Yui’s account of the abuse is true 118.
Yui eventually learns that Shobue’s healing senjutsu, rather than the forest’s offensive senjutsu, is the relevant means of awakening Nai. Her training progresses toward the final step of the “blue slug” branch associated with Nai’s recovery 125.
Inside Nai’s mental world, Yui encounters a ruined Hyuga compound and Nai repeatedly stabbing a mental representation of Feng’s dead body. Blindfolded, grief-stricken, and calling for Yui, Nai initially mistakes the visitor for Feng’s accomplice and attacks her. She controls the space sufficiently to drain Yui’s chakra 127.
Nai explains that she cannot recreate Yui in this world despite remembering her more vividly than anyone else. After their affectionate, intimate reunion, she promises to follow Yui outside. Unwilling to remain alone after Yui disappears, Nai breaks the space apart and awakens 128 129.
Physically weak and blind, Nai collapses into Yui’s arms. Learning that Feng and Ikuko are dead, she resents losing the opportunity to avenge herself but thanks Yui for doing so. She rejects her former eyes as “filthy” and chooses Ikuko’s Byakugan instead. Its initially blurred vision gradually clears, allowing her to see Yui’s changed appearance 129 130.
Ice Release and the Land of Whirlpools
Nai’s desire to catch up to Yui leads her to experiment with combining wind chakra and Water Release. The resulting cold causes her to lose consciousness, but Yui identifies the effect as Ice Release. Nai reproduces an ice shard after waking, confirming that she can continue using the ability 139.
In the Land of Hot Water, Nai and Yui meet Uesugi Yuri, a child previously captured by cultists. After learning that Yuri comes from the threatened Land of Whirlpools, they agree to take her home. Nai objects to Yui carrying Yuri while burdened by a cursed seal and transports the girl herself using Flying Ninjutsu 170 171 172.
Nai helps defend Uzushiogakure against Kirigakure invaders. Her freezing techniques defeat multiple enemies, though wide-area Flash Freeze badly drains her chakra. Yoru Yuki attempts to exploit their shared Ice Release by offering clan recognition, then attacks with a concealed poisoned needle. Nai detects the trick with her Byakugan and kills him 181 182.
Mito rewards Nai’s assistance with a scroll of Water Release techniques created by the Second Hokage. She encourages Nai to use the techniques as a foundation for developing her Ice Release 183.
Pursuit of the Nine-Tails’ power
Nai secretly follows Mito and Kushina with Xiao You, suspecting that Kushina may be a candidate for the next Nine-Tails jinchūriki. Mito later recognizes Nai’s intention to obtain the beast and protect the Land of Whirlpools in exchange 193 202 203.
Her pursuit of power also carries a concealed motive: she wants to destroy the Hyuga Clan in revenge for her treatment. When the transfer is ready, Kushina’s injured parents draw Yui away. Nai urges Yui to help them and proceeds with the transfer accompanied by Xiao You 223.
In the sealing space, Yui asks the Nine-Tails to willingly let Nai use its power. The beast’s insults provoke Nai into attempting to subdue it herself with a chakra-intensive freezing technique, rejecting Yui’s help despite the drain on her reserves 229.
After spending a full day in the sealing space, Nai awakens and demonstrates her new power to Yui on a deserted beach. She states that the Nine-Tails willingly lets her use its chakra and that she can control it freely. Yui checks for the influence of its hatred and finds Nai’s mind apparently unaffected during this demonstration 231.
Danzo’s ambush and pursuit
When Danzo ambushes Yui, Nai uses Rotation to protect her from debris and attacks Danzo with Ice Release. She offers to fight him herself but accepts Yui’s decision to face him for combat experience 213.
Nai pursues Danzo when he flees. Besides acting on Yui’s desire to kill him, she suspects that his knowledge of the enhanced Byakugan indicates a connection to Feng. Her ice wounds slow him, and an ice needle forces him to amputate an arm to prevent the cold from spreading. A smoke-producing sphere blocks her Byakugan and allows him to escape 216 217.
Nai kills the attackers left behind to delay her. When Yui reaches her, she expresses disappointment that Danzo survived 217.
Defense against the invading forces
After gaining Nine-Tails chakra, Nai dominates an attacking force on the beach. Chakra claws kill several enemies, an Ice Wall blocks Wind Release, and an enormous Water Dragon Bullet counters the attackers’ combined assault. Ice Mist freezes soaked lower-ranked ninja while the surviving jōnin attempt to defend themselves with Fire Release 233.
Nai watches the remaining enemies turn on one another, then kills the surviving jōnin after Yui returns with intelligence that the Third Raikage is personally involved. This news tempers her confidence: she recognizes that the power she can borrow remains weaker than the actual Nine-Tails 234 235.
Yui proposes a preemptive attack supported by infiltration and intelligence gathering. Nai accepts the plan and goes to a deserted beach to improve her control of Nine-Tails chakra. She later joins Yui, Sakumo, and Orochimaru in intercepting another enemy force, contributing powerful Water Release while Sakumo devastates the attackers 236 240 242.
Cooperation with the Uchiha and the Jashin Cult raid
At a hot spring, Fugaku and Shinichi Uchiha mistake Nai and Yui for cultists and attack them. Nai defeats Shinichi roughly but follows Yui’s instruction not to kill either boy. Iwasui recognizes the women as S-rank rogue ninja and negotiates rather than attempting to defeat them 264 265.
The women join the Uchiha operation against the Jashin Cult in exchange for access to information about the Evil God. Nai uses Visual Tracking to help locate a passage, protects an unconscious Yui with Ice Mist and swordsmanship, and kills the Fourth Priest 268 272 275.
During the battle with the cult leader, Nai blocks his scythe and later pins his remaining arm. He scratches her ankle and ingests her blood, activating a ritual technique. Nai initially treats the wound as insignificant, but Yui recognizes the danger and pulls her behind herself 277 278.
Nai also uses Shadow Clones during the operation, though cultists manage to take Mikoto hostage while the clones are present. After the mission, Uchiha Su offers friendship on behalf of the Uchiha. Nai steps forward and shakes his hand before Yui can, formalizing the relationship in front of the assembled ninja 281 284.
Ruins expedition and Kazama Ya
Nai accompanies Yui and Orochimaru on an expedition connected to a map of ruins within the Land of Hot Water’s Daimyo Castle. After being separated from Yui, she searches the ruin with Orochimaru for roughly a month. A genjutsu in a circular pool misleads them into following an apparent trace of Yui and traps them in coffins 286 310.
Later, Nai angrily attacks Orochimaru after believing he has used the women for his own purposes. She stops when Yui confirms that he had warned of danger and promised compensation, but remains hostile 337.
The absence of the Nine-Tails from Nai’s sealing space helps confirm that the group is experiencing a genjutsu or consciousness-based space, even though she can still produce its chakra there. She refuses to disclose the women’s secret to Orochimaru and urges him to focus on their shared escape 338 341.
Nai, Yui, and their companions flee a dangerous tower using invisibility and flight. Nai carries Orochimaru by rope, while their movement attracts a swarm of Red Ants 342.
While waiting for Yui, Nai uncovers a corpse identical to herself beneath the desert sand. Her Byakugan reveals intact chakra pathways but no remaining life force. The body appears genuine rather than an ordinary clone, then cracks, turns grayish white, and disintegrates into powder. Its identity and origin remain unexplained in the available account 345.
Rescue effort and battle with Kazama Ya
Big Bear’s premonition that Yui is in mortal danger prompts Nai to use Visual Tracking to determine her direction. Because Big Bear lacks usable chakra, Nai lends him hers to help attempt Reverse Summoning through his contract with Yui 352.
Kazama Ya appears in a physical form with white skin, horns, and Byakugan, briefly making Nai mistake him for Yui. When he claims to have killed Yui, Nai attacks in fury. He effortlessly destroys her ice attacks, provoking her into a dark-red Nine-Tails chakra manifestation with nine tails and a large Tailed Beast Bomb. Despite her rapid Body Flicker approach, he strikes her abdomen and sends her flying before the attack lands 353 354.
Big Bear catches Nai and conceals her from the Red Ants. She later takes hope from his assurance that Yui is still alive. When Yui is summoned back unconscious, Nai immediately scans her with the Byakugan and checks her condition 357 358 362.
Nai subsequently recounts Kazama’s transformation and departure to Yui. She credits the Red Ant swarm with making it possible to prevail and explains that Kazama used the gourd to leave the sealing space. She hands the gourd to Yui, whose reaction connects Kazama’s appearance to the Ōtsutsuki 363.
Mirror and continuing exploration
Nai later gives Yui a mirror, assuring her that it no longer needs chakra to sustain it. In exchange, Yui temporarily entrusts her with a foreleg taken from a giant spider in another space, warning that it is extraordinarily sharp 391.
During subsequent events, Nai is shown holding a mirror while considering an idea. Its sudden increase in weight interrupts her thoughts and causes her to inspect its surface; the provided passage does not establish the cause 399.
Appearance
Nai is half a head shorter than Yui at six and nearly 160 centimeters tall by graduation 7 17.
- White Byakugan eyes — originally transplanted from Feng’s deceased sister; removed during his later experiment 24.
- Replacement Byakugan — chooses Ikuko’s eye after awakening. Later descriptions explicitly identify her as having only one Byakugan 129 130 265.
- Dark-blue forehead protector band — chosen after passing the graduation exam 17.
- Tall, slender adult figure — described alongside Yui when they arrive to join the Uchiha mission 268.
- Nine-Tails chakra manifestation — orange-red chakra arms and a cloak-like manifestation appear after she gains its power; during her furious attack on Kazama, the chakra darkens to red and forms nine tails 231 354.
Personality
Nai rejects the clan hierarchy despite benefiting from Main Family status. At six, she already argues that family divisions should not determine friendship and hopes to unite the Hyuga as one family. She recognizes Yui’s defiance through observation and notices her chakra practice without being told 3.
Her generosity is practical: she shares training knowledge, supplies Yui with ninja tools, advocates for her education, and offers financial help upon learning that Yui cannot afford new clothes. She treats sincerity as the foundation of friendship rather than something that must first be earned 4 6 9 16.
Nai’s attachment to Yui includes unfamiliar tenderness and embarrassment. Yui’s embrace unsettles her, direct eye contact makes her avert her gaze, and praise makes her blush. These early scenes suggest emerging affection without yet establishing a declared romantic relationship 7 9 18.
Her trust in clan leadership makes her vulnerable to Feng’s trap, but captivity does not erase her loyalty. Even after losing her eyes and learning that her identity was invented, she challenges his plans for Yui 21 24 25.
The betrayal profoundly changes her outlook. Her unconscious mental world expresses violent hatred of the Hyuga and overwhelming grief over Yui’s absence. After awakening, she remains angry that others have already killed her tormentors; later, she secretly seeks the Nine-Tails’ power with the intention of wiping out the clan 127 129 223.
Her bond with Yui becomes openly intimate and remains central to her decisions. She chooses to leave her mental world because it is empty without Yui, seeks strength to stop depending on her, and repeatedly intervenes to protect her. She can also be teasing and playfully intimidating in their private interactions 129 139 206 213.
Toward enemies, Nai becomes markedly ruthless. She enjoys pursuing Danzo, watches invading ninja kill one another with amusement, and must be instructed to spare the young Uchiha who attack her. Nevertheless, she follows Yui’s requests for restraint and continues cooperating with allies 216 234 264 265.
Her confidence grows with Nine-Tails chakra, but she can recognize its limits. News of the Third Raikage alarms her, and she accepts the need for further training and a coordinated strategy. Threats to Yui can still overwhelm this caution, as Kazama’s claim of killing her triggers a grief-driven attack despite Big Bear’s attempts to calm her 235 236 354.
Abilities & Skills
Byakugan
Nai possesses an unusually early-awakened Byakugan, but her original eyes are ultimately revealed to be transplants rather than proof of her claimed ancestry 6 24.
- Uses its penetrating vision to check that Yui is safe while confronting a concealed observer 15 16.
- Loses access to it when Feng removes her eyes 24.
- Regains sight through Ikuko’s replacement Byakugan after awakening; its initially blurred vision clears 129 130.
- Sees enemies and their techniques within the mist during the defense of Uzushiogakure 180 181.
- Detects Yoru Yuki’s concealed poisoned-needle attack in time to avoid it 182.
- Byakugan: Visual Tracking: reveals footprint trails, allowing her to direct Yui toward a secret passage and later determine the direction of Yui’s travel 272 352.
- Examines the bodily structure and chakra pathways of the corpse resembling her, and checks an unconscious Yui’s physical condition 345 362.
- Cannot see through the special smoke Danzo uses to escape her pursuit 217.
The enhanced eyes Feng takes from Nai later remain separate from her replacement eye. Yui recovers them and identifies Feng’s creations as pseudo-Tenseigan; Nai is not shown using their Byakugan Beam or Byakugan Storm 68 129 206 215.
Gentle Fist
Nai begins as Yui’s instructor and later trains alongside her 4 17.
- Teaches basic stances and taijutsu through demonstrations and nightly practice 4 5.
- Initially lacks the experience to teach advanced techniques 5.
- Acquires some mastery of Eight Trigrams Palm during the Academy years 17.
- Coaches Hiashi and Hizashi in the foundational posture needed for Gentle Fist 20.
- Rotation: uses the technique to shield Yui from falling debris during Danzo’s attack 213.
Ninjutsu
Nai knows Body Flicker before Academy enrollment and later gains a broader repertoire 3 17.
- Body Flicker Technique: teaches Yui to form a one-handed seal and use chakra to activate the body’s cells for rapid movement. Later uses it to approach Kazama Ya with a Tailed Beast Bomb 15 354.
- Shadow Clone Technique: develops some mastery through shared training with Yui; later deploys three clones during the Jashin Cult operation 17 281.
- Transformation, Clone, and Substitution: performs all three smoothly during graduation 17.
- Water and wind affinities: confirmed by chakra paper and later developed into elemental techniques and Ice Release 15 139 172 233.
- Flying Ninjutsu: learns from Yui, uses wind-supported flight, and can carry another person. Strong winds within the cult’s headquarters increase the technique’s chakra consumption 171 172 271.
- Invisibility: activates invisibility while escaping the tower with Yui and Orochimaru; the provided account does not independently explain its mechanism 342.
- Chakra transfer: lends chakra to Big Bear to support an attempted Reverse Summoning of Yui 352.
Yui offers to study the Strength of a Hundred Technique with Nai, but the offer alone does not establish that Nai masters it. Likewise, Nai’s request to learn Shape Concealment does not confirm later proficiency 139 236.
Water Release
Mito supplies Nai with a scroll of the Second Hokage’s Water Release techniques, intended both to expand her repertoire and to support Ice Release development 183.
- Water Dragon Bullet: uses Tobirama’s improved version, which requires fewer hand seals and produces greater power. Drawing water from the sea and supported by Nine-Tails chakra, she creates an enormous dragon to counter a blazing whirlwind 233.
- Large-scale Water Release: clashes with an enemy technique at a cliff, creating a destructive surge that sweeps attackers away. An observer judges her output greater than that of an ordinary jōnin 242.
- Continues practicing Water Release alongside swordsmanship during later travels 267.
Ice Release
Nai develops Ice Release by combining wind and water chakra rather than discovering confirmed Yuki Clan ancestry. Her initial attempt causes dangerous internal cold and unconsciousness; Yui uses Fire Release chakra to suppress the ice before Nai later reproduces it safely 139.
- Ice shard creation: forms a small, irregular shard after recovering from the first episode 139.
- Ice needles: can form a transparent needle in her mouth and spit it with little warning. A successful hit freezes an enemy, while cold entering wounds can slow movement and spread through an affected limb 181 216 217.
- Ice Release: Flash-freeze Ice Spikes: raises enormous spikes from the ground to attack groups of enemies 181 217.
- Ice Release: Flash Freeze: freezes rushing water and the attackers behind it over a wide area; before acquiring tailed-beast chakra, this leaves her badly depleted 182.
- Ice Wall: creates a strong defensive barrier capable of blocking coordinated Wind Release attacks 233.
- Ice Mist: freezes wet opponents or slows groups of cultists, enabling follow-up attacks and protection of Yui 233 275.
- Large ice spikes: attacks Kazama Ya with a massive spike, although he destroys it effortlessly 354.
Her original chakra reserves limit the most demanding freezing techniques. Nine-Tails chakra greatly expands the scale and frequency of her elemental attacks, but does not make them effective against every opponent 182 229 233 354.
Nine-Tails Power
Nai becomes a Nine-Tails jinchūriki after the arranged transfer in the Land of Whirlpools. Following a confrontation in the sealing space, she states that the beast willingly permits her to use its chakra 223 229 231 233.
- Chakra arms and claws: extends orange-red chakra limbs to strike water or seize and kill attackers 231 233.
- Chakra manifestation: produces a cloak-like aura; under intense fury, its color darkens and nine tails appear 231 354.
- Expanded chakra supply: supports overwhelming Water Release and Ice Release that her unaided reserves could not readily sustain 229 233.
- Tailed Beast Bomb: initially forms a fingernail-sized purple sphere, then later prepares a head-sized bomb during her battle with Kazama 231 354.
- Communication in the sealing space: attempts to contact the Nine-Tails internally. Its absence within the ruins’ genjutsu helps expose the nature of that environment, although she can still manifest its chakra there 338.
Yui initially finds Nai unaffected by the hatred associated with the chakra. Her later furious manifestation contains intensely negative emotions, but the context does not establish that the Nine-Tails has taken control of her 231 354.
Mental-World Control
