Background / History

Shen Hui is the son of Shen Qifei, the Shen family’s chairman, and his first wife, Jiang Lian. His father maintained an affair and had another son, Shen Lei, close to Shen Hui’s age. When the mistress brought Shen Lei to Jiang Lian and demanded legitimate status for him, Jiang Lian suffered a heart attack and died shortly afterward 11.

Shen Qifei subsequently attempted to bring the mistress and Shen Lei into the household. Shen Hui prevented this by threatening suicide and securing support from his mother’s relatives. His father and grandfather nevertheless continued to favor Shen Lei, leaving Shen Hui determined to retain his position because part of the family’s legacy belonged to his mother 11 26.

Fate in the Original Novel

In the original storyline, Shen Lei successfully framed Shen Hui at his grandfather’s seventieth-birthday banquet. He arranged for Shen Hui to be discovered in bed with Jiang Wenxue, Shen Lei’s girlfriend, destroying Shen Hui’s reputation and securing his own acceptance into the family 25.
