Background / History

Warring States Period and Konoha’s Founding

The Uchiha possess a chakra-training tradition described as having a thousand years of history. During the Warring States Period, they fought the Senju repeatedly, developing experienced fighters and practical knowledge such as swordsmanship and Soldier Pill production. Izuna, a Mangekyō Sharingan wielder and the clan’s young leader, died at Tobirama Senju’s hands 4 16 23 30.

Madara and Hashirama helped establish Konoha to end the fighting and spare children from entering war at four or five years old. The Uchiha were among the village’s founding clans, but their members later resented how little political authority that position brought them 2 30 39.

Madara and Mu’s Departures

When Madara left Konoha, none of his clansmen followed him. Mu departed separately, leaving a short note and taking Izuna’s sword. Because he had concealed his Mangekyō Sharingan, the clan initially regarded his departure as the loss of an ordinary three-tomoe user rather than a major military asset 1 2 10.

Hyuga Lingnai’s decision to accompany Mu brought the Uchiha into conflict with the Hyuga. Hashirama stopped their confrontation, and Tobirama assigned both clans a joint investigation. The Uchiha chose members of their moderate faction, hoping the mission would strengthen their integration into Konoha and the Hokage’s faction 2.

The investigating team discovered that Mu possessed chakra comparable to Hashirama and Madara. His Mangekyō genjutsu defeated all four visitors despite his warning them beforehand. News of his subsequent victory over a multinational attacking force left the clan proud of his power but troubled that another Mangekyō wielder had abandoned them 5 8 11.

Madara’s Attack and Political Resentment

Madara’s attack on Konoha bewildered the Uchiha, who could not understand why their former leader would destroy a village they had helped establish. After Hashirama apparently killed him, other clans began excluding the Uchiha, although Hashirama’s treatment of them remained unchanged 30.

A clan meeting exposed divisions over their future. Hardliners proposed waiting for Hashirama’s death before competing for power; more cautious members questioned whether anyone could oppose Tobirama. Some invoked Mu as a potential source of strength, while others doubted that he still considered them his clansmen 30.

Mu’s Return and the Clan’s Split

Mu returned to the clan grounds to repay an elderly Uchiha who had saved and cared for him and to collect the rest of Izuna’s belongings. Several clansmen accused him of betrayal, but he immobilized them using only his Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Setsuna subsequently challenged Mu’s sweeping condemnation of the clan, prompting him to reconsider his own prejudice 42 43.

Mu offered to train Kagami and other clansmen. With Tobirama’s approval and supervision, the teaching session expanded to include other Konoha clans. Mu used genjutsu to demonstrate chakra nature transformations and medical ninjutsu rather than keeping that knowledge within the Uchiha 43 45 46.

Mu later recruited fewer than fifty Uchiha, mostly poor or marginal members without awakened Sharingan, by offering wealth and better living conditions. They relocated to the Hundred-Clan Shinobi Nation through Flying Thunder God. Subsequent visits showed emigrants working in factories, running businesses, and pursuing acting careers while living dispersed throughout the nation rather than in a single clan compound 50 51 102 120.

Security Force and Continued Divisions

After becoming Hokage, Tobirama gave the Uchiha control of Konoha’s Security Force to address their resentment over exclusion from leadership. The appointment initially pleased them, but their disregard for villagers’ opinions threatened to worsen their public reputation 99.

Kagami later considered whether Konoha’s Uchiha could follow the emigrants’ example and integrate more fully into village society. By the time Hashirama discussed the issue with Mu, the clan had branded Kagami a traitor and ceased recognizing him as a member. His status as the Hokage’s student was the stated reason they had not killed him 120 127.

Organization and Culture

Leadership and Factions

  • Authority depends heavily on strength. Setsuna recognizes the clan’s complacency but cannot persuade its members to change because his power is insufficient to command their respect 39.
  • Moderates favor village integration. The clan deliberately selects moderate members for the joint mission to find Mu and Lingnai 2.
  • Hardliners prioritize political influence. Some propose waiting for Hashirama’s death before challenging Konoha’s distribution of power 30.
  • Madara retains symbolic authority. Setsuna’s generation continues to recognize him as their leader even after his apparent death 43.

Sharingan-Based Status

Awakening the Sharingan strongly influences a member’s standing. Mu’s concealed strength meant receiving little attention, glory, or training support from the clan. Ishii, a genin who had not awakened his eyes by age twenty-two, was called useless and discouraged from working as a shinobi because other members believed he would disgrace the Uchiha 5 51.

The clan provides welfare for members and support for elders, but this does not prevent marginalization. Ishii survived on welfare after leaving shinobi work; an elderly clansman accepted Mu’s money because relying on clan support left him uncomfortable 42 51.

Pride and Internal Criticism

  • Many members celebrate Madara and Mu’s achievements as proof of the clan’s superiority without making comparable efforts to improve themselves 39.
  • Some focus on awakening stronger eyes as the answer to their shortcomings 39 43.
  • Bloodline purity is highly valued in the early village era, and marriage outside one’s clan is uncommon. Mu’s relationships with Hyuga and Uzumaki women challenge those expectations 2 39 42.
  • Mu initially regards Sharingan-wielding clansmen as arrogant but finds ordinary Uchiha more approachable. Setsuna forces him to acknowledge that his judgment of the entire clan is itself arrogant 43.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

  • Awakens through emotional stimulation; Mu uses this as evidence that shinobi’s feelings are a source of strength rather than something to eliminate 6.
  • Observes movement and chakra flow, allowing users such as Mu to anticipate attacks 18.
  • Copies ninjutsu across all five basic elements, earning the name Copy Eye and giving the clan an unusually broad collection of techniques 46.
  • Does not awaken in every member, as demonstrated by Ishii’s lack of Sharingan at age twenty-two 51.

Genjutsu and Advanced Ocular Techniques

  • Sharingan genjutsu — Effectiveness depends on ocular power. Mu demonstrates that a sufficiently powerful three-tomoe user can trap other Uchiha who cannot release themselves 42 105.
  • Mangekyō Sharingan — Represents an immense increase over the Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Documented wielders include Madara, Izuna, Mu, and the future version of Kyu 5 11 66.
  • Susanoo — Used by advanced wielders including Mu, Madara, and future Kyu; its scale and strength vary considerably between users 3 69.
  • Izanagi — A forbidden Uchiha technique that rewrites reality at the cost of an eye. Madara uses it to survive his apparent death 53.
  • Limits — Mangekyō use can damage eyesight. Mu’s resistance to blindness comes from his transplanted Hashirama cells and later system rewards, not an ability shared by the clan 31 80 111.

Swordsmanship and Combat Experience

  • Uchiha swordsmanship relies on the Sharingan; Mu instead teaches copied Senju sword techniques to students who lack it 16.
  • Surviving Warring States-era three-tomoe users possess substantial battlefield experience. Kumogakure judges that capturing their eyes would require several squads, particularly when they operate with teammates 32.
  • Madara’s combat skill allows him to match Mu during a three-day duel despite Mu’s greater raw power 69.

Clan Knowledge

  • Chakra molding — Mu teaches adopted children using the Uchiha’s established method 4.
  • Ninjutsu collection — The Sharingan has enabled the clan to accumulate more conventional jutsu than other clans, excluding comparisons involving secret techniques and forbidden jutsu 46.
  • Soldier Pills — The clan knows how to produce them from its long experience of warfare against the Senju 23.

Notable Members

  • Madara Uchiha — Former clan leader and co-founder of Konoha. Leaves without followers, later survives his apparent death and settles in Mu’s nation under the identity “Nisen” 10 32 53.
  • Izuna Uchiha — Madara’s younger brother and a Mangekyō wielder killed by Tobirama. His sword and other equipment remain in clan storage until Mu takes them 1 30 31 43.
  • Uchiha Setsuna — Acting clan leader; criticizes both the clan’s complacency and Mu’s prejudice against it 39 43.
  • Uchiha Mu — Founder of the Hundred-Clan Shinobi Nation. Rejects the clan’s narrow loyalty expectations but later trains members and offers disadvantaged Uchiha a new home 42 43 50.
  • En Uchiha — Moderate member of the team sent to investigate Mu. Restrains an unnecessary confrontation and observes Mu’s Academy 5 6.
  • Kagami Uchiha — Optimistic young shinobi and Tobirama’s student. Studies the emigrants’ lives and is later rejected by the clan as a traitor 43 120 127.
  • Uchiha Ishii — Earth-nature genin without an awakened Sharingan; emigrates in search of income and dignity 51.
  • Uchiha Miyuki — Two-tomoe user who becomes a successful actress in Mu’s nation, earning much of her income through advertising 102.
  • Uchiha Kyu — Mu and Keiko Uzumaki’s daughter. Her visiting future self possesses Mangekyō Sharingan, time-related ocular abilities, and Susanoo; her younger self has not yet awakened Sharingan by Chapter 115 58 66 68 69 115.
  • Uchiha Naoki — Mu and Hyuga Lingnai’s son. Inherits the Byakugan; his visiting future self also uses Wood Release and Sage Mode 58 66 69.

Relationships

  • Senju Clan — Longstanding wartime rivals who become fellow founders of Konoha. Madara later recognizes that competition for land and resources helped sustain their feud independently of Black Zetsu’s manipulation 39 127.
  • Hashirama Senju — Protects Konoha’s unity and continues treating the Uchiha as before after Madara’s attack, although other clans begin excluding them 2 30.
  • Tobirama Senju — Retains prejudice against the Uchiha but pursues their village integration through joint missions and eventually grants them the Security Force 2 99.
  • Hyuga Clan — Rivalry centers on bloodline pride and claims of superiority. Lingnai’s departure with Mu intensifies the dispute, while his later strength makes the Hyuga view the marriage as a useful connection 2 5 11.
  • Hundred-Clan Shinobi Nation — Offers emigrants employment and dignity outside the clan hierarchy. Dispersed settlement encourages national rather than clan identification 50 51 120.
  • Iwagakure — Fears the emergence of another Madara or Mu. Ōnoki proposes encouraging a future Uchiha massacre after Mu’s death, and eliminating the clan becomes a stated objective 79 80.
  • Kumogakure — Attempts to acquire and transplant Sharingan, but abandons their use after incompatibility and chakra exhaustion reduce recipients’ combat effectiveness 32 80.

Parallel-Timeline Counterpart

  • In the parallel world reached through the Dragon Vein, the Hundred-Clan Shinobi Nation never existed, and the Uchiha have been massacred by Konoha Year 67 104.
  • Mu and Madara visit the abandoned compound on Konoha’s outskirts. Mu notes the clan’s isolation, while Madara learns that his counterpart’s arrangements contributed to its destruction 104 105.
  • Mu and Madara leave Danzō alive so that the Uchiha of that era can take revenge themselves 106.
  • Itachi publicly states that the clan is gone but privately suspects some members escaped. He has no record of Mu and investigates whether the visiting Uchiha threaten Konoha 110 111.
