Background / History
Lingnai was the eldest daughter of a Hyuga Main Family household. Her father intended her to inherit his branch of the family, and the clan had already chosen a marriage partner for her 1 2 65.
Before Konoha’s founding, she was attacked while traveling to pay respects to the dead. Mu happened to pass by and rescued her. She became attached to him and repeatedly slipped away to visit him among the Uchiha; Konoha’s establishment made those visits easier by giving Main Family members greater freedom of movement 1.
When she noticed Mu leaving Konoha, she spontaneously chose to accompany him after dismissing her guards. Her departure abandoned the clan’s planned marriage and provoked a confrontation between the Hyuga and Uchiha, which Hashirama stopped 1 2.
Appearance
- Black hair: Wears it pinned up after marriage 54.
- Unmarked forehead: Has no Caged Bird Seal, even after the elders attempt to punish her departure 44 46.
- Clothing: Sets aside her girlish attire after marriage; later appears in ordinary housewife’s clothes before changing for a mission 54 72.
- Transformation feature: Sprouts wings from her back when using Chōmei’s power to fly 44.
Personality
Lingnai is openly devoted to Mu. She describes his presence as a source of confidence regardless of what she is doing. Her admiration extends to his teaching: as a Main Family member familiar with the Hyuga’s treatment of people as tools, she strongly responds to his insistence that shinobi should be treated as people 4 6.
Her loyalty does not prevent confrontation. She initially wants a monogamous relationship, resents Mu’s involvement with Keiko, and warns him against bringing home another woman. She eventually forgives him after he accepts responsibility and accommodates her anger, later accepting Keiko as part of their shared life 20 35.
Toward the Hyuga elders, Lingnai is defiant and willing to use both her own strength and Mu’s reputation to protect her independence. Toward Rei, she is remorseful and tender, acknowledging the suffering caused by her departure and securing her former guard’s release 44.
As a mother, she is protective but demanding. Meeting the adult Naoki from the future reveals her strict expectations; she later acknowledges that she helped place pressure on him to fulfill Mu’s ambitions. She also values restraint, telling Mu that someone who can control their power is truly strong 65 66 101.
Abilities & Skills
Byakugan
Lingnai’s Byakugan provides surveillance, chakra observation, and combat perception. Chōmei’s chakra later extends her sight far beyond that of other Hyuga 12 75.
- Blind-spot-free vision: Detects spies within her range and notices attackers attempting to leave the battlefield 12 75.
- Reconnaissance: Tracks the forces assembling against Mu’s new nation and reports their movements 8.
- Chakra analysis: Recognizes Moryo-enhanced attackers through chakra resembling that of his puppets; also notices changes in Mu’s chakra when he enters Sage Mode 75 81.
- Early workload limit: Constant surveillance leaves her exhausted before the nation acquires a proper protective barrier 12 13.
Chōmei’s Chakra and Partial Tailed Beast Transformation
Her strength comes from a cooperative relationship with Chōmei rather than from sealing him inside her. She is explicitly not a jinchūriki 20 41 75.
- Receives enormous chakra reserves and access to Chōmei’s abilities 20 41.
- Uses partial transformation to gain flight and conduct precision aerial attacks with her Byakugan 27.
- Fires Tailed Beast Bombs capable of destroying large numbers of Terracotta Warrior puppets 75.
- Uses chakra pressure to immobilize the Hyuga Grand Elder 44.
- Limits: Cannot perform Complete Tailed Beast Transformation; repeated bomb attacks expend her own chakra as well 20 75.
Gentle Fist and Vacuum Palm
Lingnai combines Hyuga taijutsu with tailed-beast chakra and experience gained from fighting Mu 41 44 75.
- Chakra-flow disruption: Immobilizes Moryo-enhanced enemies by cutting off the chakra flow inside their bodies 75.
- Empowered palm strikes: Chōmei’s chakra greatly increases the force of her close-range attacks 75.
- Aerial Vacuum Palm: Uses a high-speed dive to strengthen her attack, overpowering the Clan Leader’s opposing Vacuum Palm 44.
- Countering Rotation: Breaks through the Grand Elder’s defense using knowledge Mu taught her during their sparring 44.
- Instruction: Trains Rei while Mu teaches Konoha’s shinobi 46.
Concealment and Chakra Misdirection
Lingnai can vanish from ordinary sight while presenting several figures with apparently identical chakra to Byakugan users 41 44.
- Prevents a Konoha guard from locating her real body, then approaches through his one-degree blind spot 41.
- Reuses the technique against the Main Family elders before breaking through Rotation 44.
Caged Bird Seal Control
As a Main Family member, Lingnai knows how to control the Caged Bird Seal. This makes Branch Family shinobi unsuitable for the mission to retrieve her, since she can affect members beyond her own family branch 2.
- Tells a Branch Family guard that she will not use the seal against him 41.
- Secures the clan leadership’s promise not to activate Rei’s seal; its removal is not documented 44.
Recruitment and Administration
- Explains the nation’s salary and construction-work arrangements to newly recruited shinobi, including higher earnings for those with Earth Release 9.
- Guides Konoha visitors through the developing nation and explains the Academy’s focus on basic techniques and chakra control 6.
- Assists Keiko when Mu leaves the nation, concentrating on sensory work and related duties 103.

- Uchiha Kyu — Mu and Keiko’s daughter. Lingnai helps care for and supervise her alongside Naoki; the future Kyu teasingly calls her “Mom Number One” 66 82.

- Hyuga Tenka — Clan member who accepts that she will not return and later warns the Hyuga that they cannot defeat her aerial abilities 6 38.
- Hashirama Senju — Former Hokage and battlefield ally. She directs him to the exhausted defenders during the Moryo crisis, then accompanies him toward Mu’s battle 76.
- Uchiha Madara — Chosen teacher for the family’s children. Lingnai remains cautious about his influence and objects to discussing fights at home 58.
- Yufeng and Yucheng — Mu’s disciples and her teammates against Moryo’s puppet army 74 75.
