Background / History

Madara and Hashirama founded Konoha so children would no longer have to enter wars at four or five years old. Their partnership ended in estrangement: Madara left the village and asked his clansmen to accompany him, but none followed. His departure deprived the Uchiha of the strength they needed to challenge the Senju within Konoha 1 2 10.

His younger brother Izuna remained central to his decisions. Madara had taken Izuna’s wishes to heart when asking the clan to leave, and later spoke sorrowfully about gaining his eyes while losing his only younger brother. Mu’s assertion that power was not worth sacrificing loved ones prompted Madara to agree after a long silence 10 31.

Appearance

Madara conceals his identity as Nisen through an altered appearance. The disguise is inspired by Izuna, with enough changes to avoid using his brother’s exact face; the result strongly resembles Sasuke 52.

  • Weathered appearance: His travels leave him looking more worn, while his gaze becomes more resolute 28.
  • Hashirama-cell transplant: The cells are implanted in his chest and later incorporated into his disguise 31 98.
  • Recognizable to Hashirama: Hashirama sees through the disguise, partly because it uses his own cells. Tobirama does not recognize him 98.

Personality

Madara is proud, decisive, and eager to fight worthy opponents. He dismisses enemies he considers weak, but enjoys prolonged contests that let him test technique rather than simply overwhelm them. His three-day duel with Mu becomes a friendly rivalry in which his superior skill compensates for Mu’s greater raw power 69 108 110.

His pessimism comes from his concern with war and the cruelty he witnesses during his travels. Initially, he regards a world-encompassing genjutsu as the only credible route to peace. Nevertheless, he is not immovable: contradictions in the Stone Tablet, Mu’s questions, and a demonstration of ideal dreams repeatedly shake his confidence 10 28 30 52.

Children reveal a gentler side of him. Takeuchi, Xiaoyu, and Imai approach him without fear, awakening memories of his original wish to protect the next generation. He responds with patient, carefully adjusted training rather than demanding that they endure his full strength 33.

Madara recognizes his limitations as a leader. He praises Mu’s ability to develop a village, and the sight of Mu’s administrative workload convinces him that he is unsuited to being either a clan leader or Hokage. He prefers combat and personal training to paperwork 52 110 115.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Madara’s ocular power allows him to control tailed beasts with extraordinary efficiency 30 108.

  • Subdues the Nine-Tails with a single genjutsu and makes it his summoning beast and mount 30.
  • Overpowers the parallel world’s Two-Tails and extracts most of its chakra 108.
  • Uses the Sharingan to follow high-level combat and observe Kyu’s unusual time-based abilities 68.
  • Continues gaining ocular power after implanting Hashirama’s cells, while awaiting a further transformation of his eyes 31 53 58.

Izanagi

Madara survives his defeat by Hashirama through Izanagi, an Uchiha forbidden technique that turns an unfavorable reality into a favorable outcome 53.

  • Can be set to activate after a delay 53.
  • Can undo death, accounting for Madara’s survival after Konoha accepts that he has been killed 30 53.
  • Costs the use of one eye 53.

Susanoo

Madara uses Susanoo both as a weapon in direct combat and as armor for the Nine-Tails 30 69.

  • Battles Hashirama with the Nine-Tails clad in Susanoo 30.
  • Wields a Susanoo sword against Mu, matching greater force with superior sword technique 69.
  • Sustains a prolonged contest before switching to hand-to-hand combat and ninjutsu 69.

Wood Release

Hashirama’s cells grant Madara access to Wood Release. He demonstrates it to Mu shortly after his apparent death 31.

  • Develops its combat applications through repeated sparring with Mu over the following years 70.
  • Shows no apparent rejection of the transplanted cells 31.

Taijutsu and Swordsmanship

Madara’s battlefield experience makes him dangerous even against opponents with greater raw power 69.

  • Keeps his three-day duel with Mu balanced through superior combat technique 69.
  • Kicks Guy away after Guy opens the Seventh Gate, then urges him to show stronger taijutsu 106 107.
  • Sends Jiraiya flying after allowing him to enter Sage Mode 107.
  • Easily knocks aside the Fourth Raikage during the parallel-world chakra hunt 109.

Ninjutsu, Barriers, and Sensing

Madara knows ninjutsu of every chakra nature, although his overwhelming strength usually makes a smaller selection sufficient 69.

  • Creates a barrier around himself and Mu for a private conversation 103.
  • Detects the sensory barrier operating through Amegakure’s rain 110.
  • Notices a fluctuation in the Dragon Vein’s chakra during the parallel-world expedition 106.
  • Uses chakra pressure alone to drive Konoha’s ANBU to their knees 106.

Pursuit of Senjutsu and Six Paths Power

Madara seeks the Rinnegan and the power of the Sage of Six Paths after redirecting his attention away from the Eye of the Moon Plan 53 103.

  • Initially struggles to settle his mind enough to sense natural energy because of his fixation on the Rinnegan 113.
  • Studies senjutsu and the collected tailed-beast chakra in seclusion 115.
  • Advances unusually quickly toward Six Paths power because he is Indra’s reincarnation 127.
  • His own Rinnegan awakening and completed Six Paths attainment are not confirmed in the documented events 127.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Mu — Clansman, confidant, and sparring partner. Madara trusts him enough to accept a Flying Thunder God mark on his clothing and entrust him with what follows if the Rinnegan awakens only near his death 53.
  • Hashirama Senju — Childhood friend, fellow founder of Konoha, and former opponent. Hashirama preserves his apparent corpse and later protects his secret identity; Madara quietly mourns his eventual death 30 98 115.
  • Uchiha Izuna — Deceased younger brother. His loss shapes Madara’s grief, his relationship with his eyes, and the appearance chosen for Nisen 31 52.
  • Uchiha Kyu and Uchiha Naoki — Students and Mu’s children. Madara accepts responsibility for teaching them, later learns about their future, and reconnects with them after reflecting on his purpose 58 69 127.
  • Takeuchi, Xiaoyu, and Imai — Young villagers who hire him for chakra-control training. Their trust helps him recover the protective ideals behind Konoha’s founding 33.
  • Black Zetsu — Covert manipulator who tries to preserve Madara’s commitment to the Eye of the Moon. Madara eventually abandons the plan and grows suspicious of Zetsu’s role in the Uchiha–Senju conflict 29 38 103 113.
  • Keiko Uzumaki — Mu’s wife. She agrees to keep Madara’s survival secret and later encourages him to reconnect with his students 53 127.
  • Nagato — Rinnegan user encountered in the parallel world. Madara defeats his Six Paths of Pain and advises him against risking time travel to save Yahiko 112.
  • Obito / the Masked Man — His parallel-world counterpart’s proxy, operating under Madara’s name. Madara identifies him as an Uchiha but admits he does not know who he is 104 112.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Disputing Mu’s Path to Peace

After a month of traveling, Madara witnesses Mu’s strength and challenges his decision to leave Konoha. Mu proposes building a peaceful nation in reality; Madara instead invokes the Stone Tablet’s Eye of the Moon Plan. Each predicts that the other will eventually reconsider 10.

During a second visit, Mu compares the plan’s promised peace to Izanagi and questions its hidden costs. He encourages Madara to ask the tailed beasts about their origins. The Nine-Tails’ account deepens Madara’s doubts: the Sage separated the beasts, yet the tablet apparently instructs his successors to reunite them 28 30.

Apparent Death and Life as Nisen

Madara takes the Nine-Tails to Konoha and draws Hashirama into battle. Hashirama defeats and stabs him, then refuses Tobirama permission to study his body. The shinobi world accepts Madara’s death, while the Uchiha debate their diminished political prospects 30.

Having survived through Izanagi and implanted Hashirama’s cells, Madara accepts Mu’s invitation to visit the Hundred-Clan Shinobi Village under a new identity. As Nisen, he explores its academy and trains three children whose confidence contrasts sharply with his experiences in Konoha 31 32 33 53.

Choosing Strength over the Eye of the Moon

Black Zetsu approaches Madara through a ramen-shop disguise, using conversations about greed and conflict to reinforce his pessimism. Mu counters with a prison demonstration: inmates receive ideal dreams, illustrating how the Eye of the Moon could leave humanity trapped in illusions until death 38 52.

Mu then encourages Madara to pursue strength and the Rinnegan instead of endlessly agonizing over peace. Madara accepts, settles into village life, and agrees to teach Mu’s children. By the time he proposes exploring the future, he has completely abandoned the world-encompassing genjutsu plan 53 58 103.

His bond with the nation also deepens through combat. After a three-day duel with Mu and an encounter with the future versions of Kyu and Naoki, he resolves to help create the future they came from 69.

Parallel-World Expedition

Madara, Mu, and Black Zetsu travel through Rōran’s Dragon Vein and arrive in a parallel world at Konoha Year 67. There, the Hundred-Clan Shinobi Nation never existed. Madara learns of three great wars and the Uchiha massacre, including the part his counterpart’s arrangements played in the clan’s destruction 104.

The expedition gathers tailed-beast chakra and tests the era’s strongest fighters. Madara fights Guy and Jiraiya in Konoha, subdues the Two-Tails, and defeats all six Paths of Pain while investigating Nagato’s Rinnegan 107 108 112.

Satisfied with what he has learned about the Rinnegan, he returns with Mu through the Dragon Vein. Two years have passed in their home era. Madara considers the expedition successful and agrees to study senjutsu 113.

Seclusion and a New Understanding of War

Madara trains alone while Mu modernizes the nation. News of Hashirama’s death draws only a deep sigh from him. Although he later shows some interest in seeing the resurrected Hashirama confront the consequences of his policies, he initially avoids meeting him 115 117.

Eventually, Madara secretly listens as Mu explains war in terms of population, land, resources, and funding. He recognizes that Black Zetsu could exploit the Uchiha–Senju feud without having created every cause behind it. Rather than demand an answer from Hashirama, he leaves to spend time with Kyu and Naoki 127.

Trivia
