| First Appearance | Chapter 1 1 |
Background / History
Xiao Muchen teaches disciples of the Cultivation Sect. His responsibility for Ling Xian originates with his own master, who received a bowl of water during his travels and felt obliged to repay the favor. The old man brought Ling Xian to the sect and assigned Xiao Muchen to teach her. Xiao Muchen instructs her carefully despite considering her slow-witted and insufficiently hardworking 11.
When the Sect Leader and the sect’s capable elders enter secluded cultivation, Xiao Muchen is left managing its affairs. He also gives discourses at the Dao Hall beneath Lotus Peak, guiding disciples in their understanding of the Dao 21 28.
Appearance
Xiao Muchen is repeatedly described as handsome, ethereal, and untouched by worldly dust, with the bearing of an immortal 1 10 13.
- Aloof expression: His face is usually impassive, reinforcing his cool, distant presence 8 11.
- Commanding voice: His speech is cool and clear; during his confrontation with Feng Moyuan, it carries oppressive force 1 29.
- Reputation for beauty: Su Ying calls him the most handsome man in the Cultivation World. Sect disciples likewise regard him as their sect’s most handsome man before seeing Feng Moyuan 21 29.
Personality
Xiao Muchen maintains a restrained, authoritative manner. He restores order during disciple testing, directs new disciples to select senior guides, and discourages unnecessary disputes. His rare gentleness toward Su Ying follows a reprimand of Ping Qingyun for making a fuss over a trivial matter 10 11.
He is skeptical of emotional performances. He doubts Ling Xian’s vow to work harder because of her previous lack of effort, while Su Ying’s repeated declarations of devotion irritate him. Her exaggerated offer to cook for him every day drives him away despite his genuine interest in the food 11 14.
His desire for peace can outweigh his responsibility to a disciple. After neutralizing Su Ying’s poisoning, he deliberately leaves her other injuries untreated so that she will not immediately resume pursuing him. Nevertheless, he later returns to check on her recovery 19 21.
During the Demon Realm’s attack, his distrust becomes openly hostile. Suspecting Su Ying of collusion, he interprets her failed attempt to protect him as interference, shoves her aside, and demands to know her relationship with Feng Moyuan 29 30.
Abilities & Skills
Cultivation
- Feng Moyuan considers Xiao Muchen powerful enough to enter his secluded-cultivation barrier; Su Ying, at that point, possesses less than half Xiao Muchen’s cultivation 32.
- The system describes him as a genius whose protagonist advantage can allow him to advance automatically without cultivating. No specific realm or completed advancement is documented in the provided chapters 38.
Swordsmanship and Combat
- Wields the Azure Edge Sword when confronting Feng Moyuan 29.
- Uses palm force and fights Feng Moyuan directly during the sect invasion 30.
- Their duel endangers surrounding disciples; Feng Moyuan’s redirected sword strike wounds Xiao Muchen’s left hand 30.
Healing
- Treats Ling Xian after Su Ying injures her during sparring 1.
- Diagnoses Su Ying’s exposure to Mist Beast miasma and neutralizes the poison 19 21.
- Predicts that she will wake in two hours and recommends two days of bed rest, but does not fully heal her accompanying injuries 19.
Cultivation Instruction and Techniques
- Teaches spells and the Dao, and organizes senior-disciple guidance for new recruits 11 28.
- Uses Sword Flight 11.
- Has practiced grain avoidance and abstained from the pleasures of food for hundreds of years 14.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Azure Edge Sword — Drawn against Feng Moyuan during the attack on Clearwind Hall 29.
- Master’s token — Su Ying claims she was carrying his token when she accidentally entered Feng Moyuan’s barrier; this is her explanation, not an established account of how she breached it 32.
Relationships
- Su Ying — His disciple and, in the original character’s role, an obsessive admirer. The mission-driven Su Ying only performs that devotion and explicitly says she does not like him. She also recalls that he killed her in four previous mission attempts 8 16 23.
- Ling Xian — His disciple and intended romantic partner in the original novel. Early in the current attempt, the system says he has only a little affection for her, while Xiao Muchen privately doubts her diligence 10 11.
- Ping Qingyun — His eldest disciple. Xiao Muchen reprimands him for unfairly escalating a dispute with Su Ying; Ping Qingyun also loves Ling Xian and recognizes that he cannot compete with his master 11 22.
- Chu Yu / Feng Moyuan — Accepts the disguised Demon Venerable as a disciple after his level-ten Spiritual Root result. During the invasion, Feng Moyuan’s violet eyes remind him of Chu Yu, but he does not confirm their shared identity 10 29.
- Xiao Muchen’s master — Passes responsibility for Ling Xian’s education to him after deciding to repay a favor 11.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Missions and Disciple Selection
- Intervenes when Su Ying attempts to cripple Ling Xian during sparring, preventing destruction of her Spiritual Root. The incident deepens the leads’ feelings in the original plot 1.
- Ends Su Ying’s punishment at Sit-and-Forget Mountain and excuses her late arrival at disciple selection 8.
- Accepts Chu Yu among the new disciples and establishes their senior-disciple mentoring arrangements 10 11.
Su Ying’s Injury and Recovery
- Treats Su Ying after the Unbounded Forest expedition and entrusts her care to Chu Yu 19.
- Shows disappointment when Chu Yu reveals that Ling Xian’s reckless entry into the miasma caused Su Ying’s injury 19.
- Returns to find Su Ying already recovered and cooking. He denies responsibility for her unexpectedly rapid recovery, contradicting the system’s assumption that he healed her 21.
Demon Realm Invasion
- Leads the disciples toward Clearwind Hall after learning that demons have breached the sect’s gates 29.
- Suspects Su Ying because of her fascination with Feng Moyuan and reports that she entered his barrier without a magical artifact 29.
- Duels Feng Moyuan, suffers a hand wound, and accuses Su Ying of being connected to the Demon Realm. Feng Moyuan subsequently abducts her, while Black Shadow separately takes Ling Xian 30.
Intended Original-Novel Trajectory
These events are described as the original novel’s plot, rather than confirmed developments in the altered storyline:
- Ling Xian’s abduction makes Xiao Muchen recognize his feelings for her and leave the mountain to search for her 23.
- Su Ying accompanies him but destroys clues and misleads him to prevent Ling Xian’s return 23.
- Before her planned wedding to Feng Moyuan, Ling Xian realizes she loves Xiao Muchen, contacts him, and is taken away by him 23.
- The system predicts that Xiao Muchen and Feng Moyuan will eventually kill Su Ying together 4.
