|---|---|---|
| Soul-Severing Realm | 38 | Breaks through while meditating on the roof above Su Ying, simultaneously with her advancement to the Spirit Tranquility Stage. Her circulating energy benefits his cultivation; dragon and phoenix manifestations appear around him. |
Background / History
Feng Moyuan was adopted by guardians with cruel intentions. His exceptional talent soon made him too powerful for them to bully. The Demon Realm’s elders later continued tormenting him through deliberately excessive, trivial paperwork, but his advancement left them even less capable of challenging him 43 46.
He spent a thousand years in secluded cultivation seeking the Soul-Severing Realm. Su Ying’s intrusion disrupted that attempt and cost him cultivation. Awakening earlier than the original plot prescribed, he overheard her mental conversation with her system and discovered that his world was a book—and that he was a supporting character rather than its male lead 2 23 38.
Appearance
Feng Moyuan is described by the system as the most handsome man in the novel. His appearance captivates even the Cultivation Sect disciples confronting his invading forces 10 29.
- Violet eyes — retained in his Chu Yu disguise, prompting Su Ying and Xiao Muchen to notice a possible connection 4 29.
- Ink-black hair and pale, smooth skin — features he admires when examining himself in a bronze mirror 3 23.
- Scarlet robes — his usual clothing in his true form; he also wears a dark purple robe during the Flame Mountain journey 7 23 48.
- Chu Yu disguise — a handsome, apparently innocent cultivator who looks seventeen or eighteen 4.
- Husky voice — initially hoarse because he has not spoken for over a thousand years 2 7.
Personality
Feng Moyuan is intensely proud of his beauty and power. He regards being assigned a supporting role as an insult, rejects the predicted sacrifice of his empire for Ling Xian, and considers no woman worthy of his appearance 2 3 10 29.
He is vindictive, coercive, and quick to threaten violence. He confines Su Ying, uses her fear to secure obedience, and seriously injures her while helping complete a system quest. His amusement often takes a petty form: making her repeat greetings, worsening her hair, or deliberately frightening her 32 33 34 35 36.
His growing attachment to Su Ying mixes attraction, jealousy, and possessiveness with protective actions. He resents her apparent preference for Xiao Muchen, yet returns her Spatial Ring, attempts to cook for her, and rebukes Black Shadow for knocking her unconscious 38 39 41 44.
Despite his treatment of captives and subordinates, he takes threats to the Demon Realm’s inhabitants seriously. He condemns the elders for allowing spirit beasts to displace ordinary people and personally undertakes the expedition against them 43 46.
Abilities & Skills
Hearing Su Ying’s Thoughts
Feng Moyuan can hear both Su Ying’s internal thoughts and her system’s replies, even when she never speaks aloud 2.
- Learns about the novel, its assigned roles, and Su Ying’s missions through their conversations 2 10.
- Recognizes that her attempt to shield Xiao Muchen is mission-driven rather than a genuine expression of devotion 30.
- Overhears escape plans and uses the information to retain control over her 38 44.
- Su Ying remains unaware that he can hear her private exchanges 47.
Magical Disguise
He transforms into Chu Yu, posing as a young disciple from the Lower Realm and concealing his identity as the Demon Realm’s ruler 4 7.
- Maintains a timid, obedient manner while staying with Su Ying and entering Xiao Muchen’s discipleship 7 10.
- Repeatedly resumes the disguise after conducting secret meetings in his true form 27.
- His unchanged violet eyes become a clue to his identity 29.
Sleeping Curse and Sedative Resistance
Feng Moyuan uses a Sleeping Curse to leave Su Ying unaware of his nighttime activities 7 27.
- The curse also disables her system; he realizes this after it reports crashing overnight 7.
- Resists Su Ying’s soporific powder and pretends to be unconscious to observe her intentions 27.
Step-Separation Curse
This curse forces Su Ying to follow his movements and pulls her toward him when he moves too far away 46 49 50.
- Functions repeatedly rather than ending after one activation 49.
- Can be removed by Feng Moyuan or overcome with cultivation surpassing his own 49.
- Becomes dangerous in combat: his attack on the giant Zhitu drags Su Ying into the battle and exposes her to its strike 50.
Combat and Barrier Magic
His magic includes powerful palm strikes, sword combat, flight, concealment, and restrictive barriers 2 30 38 46.
- Uses black palm force to knock down multiple Cultivation Sect disciples and wounds Xiao Muchen during their duel 30.
- Creates a barrier around the inn to prevent Su Ying from escaping, then effortlessly breaks it with the Dragon Roar Sword when departing 46 48.
- Follows Su Ying invisibly and marks her with powder before she dons an Invisibility Cloak 38 39.
- Uses rain and water spells alongside Bai Mang to extinguish the ordinary Zhitu’s flames after Su Ying identifies their weakness 50.
Spiritual Roots and Cultivation
Feng Moyuan states that he consumes Spiritual Roots rather than human flesh. He initially considers absorbing Su Ying’s root to recover lost cultivation and potentially advance further 5 7.
- As Chu Yu, produces a level-ten Spiritual Root test result, which he privately considers unimpressive 10.
- Rejects the predicted consumption of Ling Xian’s root because he considers its grade too low 23.
- Benefits from Su Ying’s cultivation during his breakthrough; afterward, he notices daily gains and suspects her presence is helping him advance 38 48.
Alchemy
While posing as an inexperienced novice, Chu Yu refines five sixth-tier Miasma-Breaking Pills under Su Ying’s guidance 25.
- Defeats Ping Qingyun’s three fourth-tier Concentration Pills in their alchemy contest 25.
- Follows Su Ying’s gradual addition of ingredients despite initially intending to place them all in the furnace at once 25.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dragon Roar Sword — a spirit-bearing sword that emits a dragon’s roar; used in combat, intimidation, flight, and breaking barriers 30 35 44 48.
- Long whip — pulls Su Ying out of the Cultivation Sect crowd and into his arms during the invasion 30.
- Short Flute — produces eerie, soul-enthralling notes and summons a subordinate 7.
- Phoenix Feathers — fired at Bai Mang and Black Shadow when they interrupt his rooftop surveillance 37.
- Truth Pill — makes Su Ying recognize him as her master and answer questions for two hours; she remembers nothing of the interrogation afterward 23.
- Bronze mirror — used to examine and admire his appearance after his thousand-year seclusion 3.
Relationships
- Su Ying — Initially an intruder whose Spiritual Root might compensate for his lost cultivation. Her thoughts, lotus fragrance, cooking, and cultivation draw his interest. He abducts and confines her, but increasingly treats her as someone personally important; she still does not know he is Chu Yu 2 5 30 32 38 44 47.
- Ling Xian — His intended love interest in the original novel, but not in the altered events. He keeps her as a maid after Black Shadow abducts her by mistake, then explicitly forbids her from approaching him 23 30 31 37.
- Xiao Muchen — Rival cultivator and leader of the disciples he attacks; also his unwitting master while he poses as Chu Yu. Feng Moyuan’s jealousy intensifies when he believes Su Ying prefers Xiao Muchen 10 30 36 38.
- Black Shadow — Loyal but meddlesome subordinate who repeatedly misreads his interest in Su Ying and Ling Xian. Feng Moyuan punishes his interference and promises further punishment for mistreating Su Ying 30 33 44.
- Bai Mang — One of his nine protectors; handles official summons, reports on the spirit beasts, and recognizes Su Ying’s unusual standing more readily than Black Shadow 33 34 44 46.
- Demon Realm elders — Former tormentors whose authority is undermined by his strength. He forces them to take responsibility for the memorials before leaving to confront the spirit beasts 43 46.
