Personality

Black Shadow is loyal and deferential to Feng Moyuan, but frequently mistakes curiosity or unusual treatment for romantic interest. He interprets an investigation into two women as evidence of prospective consorts, then assumes an attack on the Cultivation Sect is a scheme to abduct them. His enthusiasm repeatedly leads him to act beyond his orders 7 15 23 30.

His treatment of Su Ying is blunt, dismissive, and sometimes violent. Even after her knowledge proves useful, he belittles her identification of the Zhitu and rejects her warning about a surviving beast. Nevertheless, Feng Moyuan considers him irritating rather than fundamentally bad, and the system states that Black Shadow never betrayed him in the original novel 43 44 49 50.

He enjoys gossip about his master but fears the consequences of overstepping. After being threatened or punished, he quickly apologizes and complies; following his mistreatment of Su Ying, he hopes meritorious service at Flame Mountain will offset his offense 33 37 44.

Investigations and Sect Attack

After Feng Moyuan orders investigations into Su Ying and Ling Xian, Black Shadow delivers the completed dossier and urges him to return to the Demon Realm’s neglected paperwork. Sensing a woman in Chu Yu’s room, he privately celebrates what he mistakenly believes is his master’s first sexual encounter 7 15.

He later prepares forces for the Cultivation Sect attack. When Feng Moyuan takes Su Ying away, Black Shadow reasons that she is the enemy and Ling Xian must therefore be the beloved. He knocks Ling Xian unconscious and abducts her, provoking Feng Moyuan’s fury upon their return 23 27 30.

Black Shadow admits his mistake and offers to return Ling Xian. Feng Moyuan instead has her made a maid. Black Shadow subsequently suggests moving Su Ying into the maids’ quarters, earning a palm strike and an explicit warning to stay out of his master’s affairs 31 33.

Su Ying’s Imprisonment

Following Su Ying’s failed escape, Black Shadow orders soldiers to confiscate her Spatial Ring. When she later collapses from deprivation, Feng Moyuan orders him to move her to the Slaughter Hall. A maid reports that Black Shadow struggled to obtain a meal for her 40.

He returns the ring on Feng Moyuan’s orders and reminds Su Ying to thank the Demon Venerable. Their hostility persists: when the aroma of hot pot tempts him, she refuses to share because he helped leave her hungry in the dungeon 41 42.

Flame Mountain Expedition

Ordered to bring Su Ying along, Black Shadow knocks her unconscious when she resists. Feng Moyuan immediately takes her from him, rebukes his rough handling, and postpones punishment until their return. Bai Mang points out that her survival and release from the dungeon should already have revealed her importance 43 44.

During the journey, Black Shadow continues antagonizing Su Ying. At the inn, he reports how often she touched Feng Moyuan during their flight; she excludes him from dinner, and Feng Moyuan orders him to wash the dishes without magic 45 46 47.

At Flame Mountain, he challenges Su Ying’s identification of the Zhitu but cannot offer another explanation. Sent forward to test the beasts, he provokes the flock and shields himself from its flames. After the ordinary Zhitu are defeated, he dismisses her warning that one remains—only for the giant original beast to emerge from the crater 49 50.
