Background / History
Guilliman was raised by King Konnor and Lady Yuton on Macragge. Konnor's assassination by political rivals and Yuton's continuing guidance shaped Guilliman's governing style, restraint, and sense of responsibility; his underlying anger and recklessness were disciplined into the demeanor of a rational monarch. 107 137 175
During the early war against the traitor Legions, Guilliman was found alive after being stripped of reason and enhanced by the Warp. He fought the Word Bearers with extreme savagery, personally shielding his sons and crushing Astartes in close combat before leading an Ultramarines counteroffensive. 32
As the conflict widened, he shifted from offense to the defense of Ultramar's Five Hundred Worlds, directing recruitment, gene-seed recovery, repairs, resupply, and force expansion. He also suspended the Nicaea Edict temporarily to permit psychic power against Warp-based enemies. 32 43
Guilliman later summoned scattered loyalist forces to Macragge, presenting himself as the eastern frontier's unifying leader in the Emperor's absence. His audiences won the support of representatives from several Legions despite suspicions that he sought an independent realm. 136 137 138
An Alpha Legion assassination attempt nearly killed him in his own palace. Guilliman fought ten infiltrators despite being wounded by toxin-laced Vengeance Rounds, then used the crisis to impose martial law and establish a contingency plan for Ultramar's survival should he die. 147 149 151
Lady Yuton pressed Guilliman to accept the burden of ruling the Second Empire, arguing that Macragge and the Five Hundred Worlds already required him as their emperor. Guilliman resisted the title, fearing it would validate accusations of ambition and betray his loyalty to the Emperor. 175 186
After the civil war, Guilliman arrived at Terra with more than 300,000 Ultramarines, over 50,000 scattered Astartes, 70,000 Raven Guard, and over 5,000 ships—too late for the decisive battle but with a force large enough to alarm even fellow loyalists. 667
He subsequently became the Imperium's de facto ruler after the High Lords' Council was reduced from a ruling institution to an executive body. Though he remains Imperial Regent, he views the position as an intolerable weight rather than a prize. 905 906 969
Appearance
Guilliman is a towering Primarch whose usual composed bearing can shift into an imposing regal presence. His formal wargear is cobalt blue and gold, often paired with a cloak, laurel wreath, or crimson cape. 38 136 780 821
- Exceeds four meters in height while fully armed. 780
- Has sharp, axe-carved facial features and sincere sapphire-blue eyes. 38
- Wears short golden hair; repeated strain as Imperial Regent left white strands at his temples. 749 794
- Commonly wears a laurel of victory. 38 821
- His ornate armor bears gilded decorations and, on campaign, can mount an advanced tactical combat-support system. 136 785
Personality
Guilliman is fundamentally rational, methodical, and capable of controlling his emotions with extraordinary discipline. He can process administrative work, receive visitors, and plan reforms simultaneously, giving many observers the impression that he is a living supercomputer. 107 749
His discipline does not mean he lacks emotion. Beneath his calm exterior lies profound anger, pride, grief, and a recurring desire to personally take the field; Lady Yuton and Loci are among the few people able to restrain or openly reprimand him. 49 166 794
He is an idealist with exceptional charisma, inspiring not merely genetic loyalty in his sons but a sense of spiritual resonance with his ambitions. He sincerely values humanity's survival over status, repeatedly insisting that rulership is responsibility rather than privilege. 64 136 790 905
Guilliman can become impulsive when emotionally invested, particularly when his family is threatened. He recognizes this weakness but still chooses to lead dangerous missions personally, most notably when seeking immortality technology for Lady Yuton. 794 906 907
Abilities & Skills
Primarch Physiology
Guilliman possesses the immense speed, strength, resilience, and reaction time of a Primarch.
- He can pulverize armored Astartes with his bare hands and use their bodies as improvised cover against bolter fire. 32
- His physical speed allows him to evade highly advanced sniper fire and strike with enough force to shatter an Ork warlord's face through its durability. 785 791
- He can survive wounds that would kill ordinary warriors, including psychic injuries, toxic Vengeance Rounds, and severe blunt-force punishment. 38 147 150 791
- Bolter rounds and specialized weapons can still injure him; he does not consider himself invulnerable. 32 147
Strategic Command and Multi-Threaded Thought
Guilliman's greatest strength is his ability to command and analyze on a vast scale.
- His mind can consider hundreds of independent problems simultaneously without interference, even while fighting for his life. 147
- He can manage administrative duties, conduct meetings, and develop military reforms at the same time. 107
- In battle, he can theoretically coordinate soldiers and armored units across dozens of sub-battlefields as a single force. 784
- He is regarded as one of the foremost military commanders among the Primarchs, with only the most accomplished of his brothers considered comparable. 754
Oratory and Political Leadership
Guilliman is a persuasive speaker who uses sincerity, shared purpose, and practical reasoning to unite divided groups.
- He won the recognition of Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, Raven Guard, Salamanders, White Scars, and Space Wolves gathered on Macragge. 136
- He defused Gantura's challenge to his loyalty by accounting for his actions in the Eastern Galaxy and reaffirming his commitment to the Imperium. 137 138
- He used the losses of the Ork war to persuade Sigismund and the Black Templars to reconsider Primaris upgrades. 793
- He can debate on philosophical and civilizational questions, dismantling the arguments of the Ork debater Grud. 790
Swordsmanship and Close Combat
Guilliman is an elite swordsman whose style emphasizes balance, precision, and directness over flamboyant technique.
- His swordsmanship is considered among the best of the Primarchs. 90
- His style is described as upright and balanced, reflecting both his education and his temperament. 90
- He combines mathematical prediction, dynamic vision, and rapid movement to evade stronger opponents and exploit openings. 790 791
- His multi-threaded thought can become a liability in duels requiring total concentration and instinctive focus. 790
Anti-Psychic Power
Guilliman awakened a unique psychic ability during his battle with Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka. He initially called it “anti-psychic power,” while Loci identified it as an exceptionally unusual form of psychic power. 791 794
- It can manifest through the Loyalty Short Sword as an enlarged psychic blade. 791 792
- It negates or weakens psychic powers, sorcerous curses, Warp-based tricks, and Waaagh! energy. 794 907
- The power damaged Ghazghkull's Waaagh!-dependent gravity hammer and suppressed the weapon's supernatural properties. 792
- It substantially weakened Loci's psychic lightning but did not completely prevent Guilliman from being struck. 794
- Guilliman considers it especially valuable against psychic enemies, though he continues to define himself by his actions rather than by Warp power. 794
Weapons & Wargear
- Loyalty Short Sword — Guilliman's primary blade; it can become a four-meter psychic lightsaber when empowered by his anti-psychic ability. 90 791 792
- Hand of Dominion — A power fist integrated with a boltgun. Its shells are powerful enough to destroy a Chimera APC, while its charged strikes employ a destructive Disintegration Field. 790 791
- Loci-forged power armor — Features a positioning and transmission system that allows Loci to monitor Guilliman's condition in real time. 96
- Authority-blessed armor — Loci's psychic blessing protected Guilliman's armor from Ghazghkull's Waaagh!-empowered phase claw. 791
- Combat-support system — An advanced armor interface that translates battlefield variables into tactical visual data and can assist less experienced warriors. 785
- Anti-Psionic Bolters — Specialized ammunition containing blackstone powder and Untouchable bone ash, intended to suppress Warp creatures such as Daemon Primarchs. 811
Relationships
- Lady Yuton — Adoptive mother, chief political adviser, and Guilliman's greatest emotional vulnerability; her influence can make even the Primarch accept precautions he initially rejects. 46 175 838
- King Konnor — Deceased adoptive father whose governance and leadership style Guilliman consciously emulates and improves upon. 137 175
- Loci — Guilliman's closest friend and trusted adviser. Guilliman named him Ultramar's contingency leader in the event of his death. 151 794
- Marius Gage — Ultramarines Chapter Master who reports on recruitment and logistics, commands alongside Guilliman, and safeguards him during crises. 43 667
- The Eternal Crusade — Guilliman's elite guard and most reliable battlefield shield; they repeatedly protect him despite overwhelming danger. 49 667 791
- Lion El'Jonson — Brother, ally, and occasional rival. Lion attacked Guilliman upon his late arrival at Terra, but both withheld their weapons and avoided fratricide. 667
- Corvus Corax — Brother and military ally who arrived with Guilliman's forces at Terra and later expressed reluctance at leaving Guilliman with the Empire's burden. 667 969
- Clone Guilliman — A younger clone created through Fabius Bile's technology. The two share concern for Lady Yuton but disagree over who should lead the expedition against the Cult. 907
