Power Progression
The following are documented advancements of individual demon beasts and tamed spirit beasts.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-stage second tier — Little Qing | 381 | Advances rapidly with her Nether Void bloodline and Lin Changheng’s generous supply of elixirs and resources; encounters little difficulty with the bottleneck. |
| Late third tier — Wood-Armored Dragon Lizard | 457 | Recently completes its breakthrough but remains injured and weakened. Its body grows larger, its defenses strengthen, and the tree-like growth on its back matures. |
| Late third-tier peak — Two-Headed Demon Wolf | 486 | Breaks through after consuming a human Core Formation cultivator’s true core. Its companions prioritize feeding cores to the wolf and sand serpent. |
| Late third-tier peak — Giant Sand Serpent | 492 | Reaches the same rank as the other three desert demons; the group subsequently leaves the desert together. |
| Late third tier — Little Qing | 541 | Confirmed at this stage before accompanying Lin to Luminous Jade Immortal City. |
| Mid third tier — Xiao Hei | 541 | Grows enormously in size and strength, apparently benefiting from the earth-breath soil in Lin’s blessed land. |
| Late third-tier peak — Little Qing | 601 | Explicitly identified at this rank while guarding the surviving Jade-Mist Leopard leaders. |
| Fourth tier / Transformation Demon King — Little Qing | 606 607 | Uses a premium Demon-Shedding Transformation Pill and survives heavenly lightning. Her demon core stabilizes, her body takes human form, and she adopts the title True Lord Sacred Tiger. |
Classification and Origins
Demon Beasts and Spirit Beasts
| Category | Defining characteristics |
|---|---|
| Demon beasts | Usually wild and ferocious. They sustain themselves and grow by consuming the essence of the sun and moon, flesh, and blood 51. |
| Spirit beasts | Relatively gentle beasts that can be tamed to assist cultivation or combat. Their roles include guardians, mounts, companions, and battle pets 51. |
| Boundary between them | There is no impassable distinction: intelligent demon-beast cubs can be raised into spirit beasts. Neither category inherently has a higher cultivation ceiling 51 220. |
- Some ordinary wild beasts become demon beasts after encountering a spiritual influence of heaven and earth 68.
- An ordinary whale that awakened intelligence received Demon-Transformation Pills from Lin, helping it become a demon beast 543.
- Mountain and marsh spirits, including the Lantern Grass Spirit and Red-Eyed Fire Ogre, are sometimes called demon beasts but are not conventional animal-derived beasts. Their formation depends on unusual circumstances and cannot be reliably reproduced 68 284.
- Terms such as primordial ancient species, heaven-and-earth true spirit, and Savage Wastes variant describe distinct characteristics or origins; they are not interchangeable names for all demon beasts 284.
Bloodlines and Potential
A beast’s inherited bloodline influences its cultivation speed and potential, although its apparent limits can sometimes be surpassed 52.
| Bloodline / Category | Documented significance |
|---|---|
| Mundane tainted | One of the initial bloodline grades explained at the Spirit Fox Beast Pavilion. Lin completes transformations for five varieties 52 408. |
| Turbid baleful | Possessed by beasts such as the Black-Spined Vulture and Explosive Flame Azure Lion; their bloodlines carry elemental affinities and several selectable innate talents 239 301. |
| Mystic spirit | Much rarer than the initial grades. Lin actively seeks beasts of this bloodline for their greater potential 52 76. |
| Nether Void | Includes Thick-Earth Berserk Bears and the Azure Sky White Tiger. Little Qing’s rapid cultivation demonstrates the advantages of this bloodline 279 345 381. |
| Blazing Origin | A powerful bloodline associated with the Wind-Piercing Beast and considered a likely minimum for a true flood dragon 487 545 561. |
| Divine-Origin | Difficult to find in the mortal world; Lin considers suitable Blazing Origin beasts easier to obtain 602. |
| True spirits | Stand at the pinnacle of known demon-beast ranks. Ancient accounts attribute extraordinary world-altering powers to them 437. |
- A mutation does not necessarily produce a new species. The Origin Cauldron’s identification of Little Qing as an Azure Sky White Tiger, rather than a Blue-Furred Tiger, leads Lin to recognize her as a different species—not merely a mutated Blue-Furred Tiger 345.
- Mutations can be beneficial. The Poisonfire Flood Dragon is a rare positive mutation, despite initially being expelled by the pureblood-favoring Evil Dragon Palace 586.
- Exceptional blood does not guarantee that a beast can use it: Feng spends a century unsuccessfully attempting to refine a drop of true-spirit essence blood 562.
Cultivation and Transformation
Tier Characteristics
| Tier | Documented characteristics |
|---|---|
| First tier | Essence blood remains dispersed and must be manually separated into portions 279. |
| Second tier | Beasts develop basic intelligence and normally avoid obvious danger. Even wingless species can fly using demon power, although their flight is not necessarily fast 216 283. |
| Third tier | Beasts possess demon cores and can travel swiftly through the air. Humanlike traits become increasingly apparent toward the late stage, although ordinary partial transformation generally does not exceed thirty percent 283 331. |
| Fourth tier / Transformation | Surviving the transformation lightning tribulation allows a beast to acquire a largely human body while retaining its beast-form strength. Intelligence increases greatly, and the transformed being can be called a demon cultivator or Demon King 331 579 607. |
- The appearance of a transformed human body depends on species; demon beasts cannot freely choose its beauty or ugliness 331.
- Human speech can appear before full transformation. Feng speaks at late third-tier peak, but Lin has encountered very few third-tier beasts capable of doing so 562.
- Transformation remains dangerous despite preparation: Little Qing suffers severe injuries and releases uncontrolled demon power during her breakthrough 606 607.
Demon Core Quality
| Demon core | Human counterpart | Properties |
|---|---|---|
| Turbid core | False core | A “dead core” whose quality cannot be improved. A third-tier beast with only a turbid core cannot advance to the middle stage 331 579. |
| Pure core | True core | Also a dead core whose quality cannot be improved. Xiao Hei and Big Gray both form pure cores 579. |
| Heavenly core | Golden core | A “living core” that can be improved and offers an open path forward 579. |
Abilities and Skills
Physical Strength and Durability
- Many demon beasts possess powerful physiques, thick hides, and considerable vitality. Earth-aspected beasts are particularly noted for strength and toughness 279 493.
- The Wood-Armored Dragon Lizard remains combat-capable after an attack that Lin believes would have crippled or killed a human late-Core-Formation cultivator. Its bulk, however, makes it less agile than a human opponent 458.
- Physical defenses are not universal protection: Lin exploits shell seams against a giant scorpion and the core–soul junction behind the neck of Mystic Fire Rhinoceroses 362 502.
Innate Talents and Demonic Arts
Abilities vary by species and bloodline rather than following a single universal skill set.
| Species | Documented talents / abilities |
|---|---|
| Mountain-Moving Ape | Mighty Strength enhances force; Rock Armor forms protective stone armor and can reflect some spells; Quaking Howl combines sound and demon power to fracture the ground and injure internal organs. Mountain-Melting is recorded as a poorly understood cultivation method involving consuming mountains 105. |
| Flame-Tailed Golden Mouse | Limb Hardening, Flame-Tail Wave, and Spirit-Sense Tracking; possesses metal and fire attributes 78. |
| Black-Spined Vulture | Pouncing Strike, Insight, and Rending Feathers; naturally metal-aspected 239. |
| Explosive Flame Azure Lion | Flame Manipulation, Explosive Flame, and Tremor Roar 301. |
| Dark Underworld Demon Wolf | Golden Shadow provides an explosive burst of speed and two golden shadow doubles 462. |
| Giant-Tusked Elephant Demon | Earth Connection anchors it to the ground, draws strength from the earth, and greatly increases strength and defense while its feet remain grounded 493. |
| Ancient Gloomwood Snake | Its Thousand-Poison Spirit Erosion talent grants toxin resistance and the ability to store and release poison when refined by Lin 482. |
| Soulweaving Demon Butterfly | Possesses an exceptional talent touching on the possibility of resurrection, beyond the bounds of ordinary demon-beast abilities 437. |
Perception, Movement, and Intelligence
- Some beasts possess keen spiritual perception and specialize in ambushing cultivators, including attacks from behind a traveling group 386.
- Third-tier beasts can be cunning opponents rather than simple predators. Their aerial movement can exceed that of ordinary Core Formation cultivators who lack specialized escape arts 283 386.
- Beasts can organize coordinated hunts: the four desert demons use soul-controlled corpse puppets as bait, share human flesh, and allocate cores to help weaker members advance 486.
Ecology and Behavior
Habitat and Territoriality
- Most beasts in the Savage Wastes are demon beasts. Individual beasts strongly defend their territories against outsiders 51 279 327.
- Cultivation resources influence where powerful beasts settle. Lin expects a third-tier Golden-Armored Thunder Ape to live deeper in the wastes, where suitable spiritual land is more available 283.
- Long-term exposure to demon power can contaminate nearby spirit veins. The Wood-Armored Dragon Lizard’s cave contains a wood vein approximately thirty percent tainted by demon power—usable by the Demon Race but hazardous to human cultivation without purification 458.
- Humans have cleared many land-dwelling demon beasts from the Inner Sea, while Outer Sea islands still support populations. Tiger demons are considered nearly extinct in the Azure Abyss Sea 541 606.
Kinship and Social Bonds
Demon beasts can display family attachment and loyalty rather than acting solely from aggression. The Blue-Furred Male Tiger reacts with worry and fury when it discovers its cubs missing, while the Ancient Gloomwood Snake condemns Lin for killing its kin 219 482.
Feng’s devotion to Yu Susu and the Green Jade Gate motivates him to offer his most precious treasure in exchange for help with her cultivation. Among Lin’s tamed beasts, Xiao Hei and Big Gray maintain a healthy rivalry and share opportunities for advancement 562 619.
Beast Tides
- A normal beast tide begins when overcrowding in the Savage Wastes prompts high-stage beasts to drive lower-stage populations toward human territory, reducing excess numbers and expanding their range 208.
- Usual warning signs include migrations, rising low-tier populations, and intensifying territorial conflict over months or years 208.
- Ordinary tides retreat after sufficient losses, leaving ruined settlements and corpses behind 212.
- Battles between powerful beasts can also trigger tides, as demonstrated by the clash between a Golden-Armored Thunder Ape and a Crimson-Winged Fire Elephant 331.
- Flying above a tide is dangerous: Mo Zhaoli reports that many Foundation Establishment cultivators died after attracting flocks of flying demon beasts 216 217.
Materials and Cultivation Uses
| Material | Uses |
|---|---|
| Hide and scales | Talisman materials, footwear, and protective armor. Exceptional flood-dragon hide can be refined into high-quality inner armor 51 54 407. |
| Blood and essence blood | Pill refining and Lin’s Origin Cauldron Spirit-Seizing Transformation 51 84. |
| Demon cores | Medicinal ingredients, beast-advancement resources, and components sought for Five Elements Beast-Origin Powder 329 383 493. |
| Flesh | Hunting bait and food for spirit beasts; powerful beast meat becomes a cultivation resource for Lin’s companions 327 433 492. |
| Horns, claws, bones, and armor | Valuable harvested materials. Lin offers flood-dragon claws for an Ancient Treasure replica and salvages the Wood-Armored Dragon Lizard’s armor and bones 407 458. |
| Special organs | Species-specific medicinal resources, such as the Earthfire Nether Serpent’s fire-essence-rich gallbladder 329. |
Essence Blood Yield
These are the ordinary collection and Spirit Seizure ratios described in the text.
| Beast tier / stage | Essence blood characteristics | Spirit Seizure progress |
|---|---|---|
| First tier | Dispersed blood, manually separated into portions 279. | Two portions yield one point 279. |
| Early second tier | Normally condenses four concentrated drops; one drop counts as one portion 279. | One point per drop 279. |
| Mid second tier | Normally five drops after the minor-stage breakthrough 279. | One point per drop 279. |
| Late second tier | Normally six drops 279. | One point per drop 279. |
| Third tier | Contains more essence blood than lower-tier beasts 600. | Two points per drop 600. |
- Minor-stage breakthroughs increase the ordinary number of condensed drops, but a qualitative change in essence blood occurs only upon entering a new major tier 279.
- Lin can select an innate talent through Spirit Seizure and refine it for his own use. Completed transformations can grant ancestral demonic arts or divine-ability true intent 179 239 279.
- Demonic arts provide immediate bloodline-based power with limits tied to their source; divine abilities have potential that grows with cultivation 280.
Taming and Advancement
Control and Communication
- Raising intelligent cubs is a viable route to obtaining spirit beasts. Lin considers using the Dust-Forgetting Pill to erase newborn tiger cubs’ memories before taming them 219 220.
- A Beast-Taming Plaque allows divine-sense communication, commands, and monitoring of a beast’s condition 470.
- Mature wild demon beasts cannot be bound by the same contracts as young beasts or spirit beasts. Capturing them for repeated blood collection carries risks of rebellion or suicide 408.
- Lin later uses the Spirit-Sealing Life Spring Demonic Art to control other demon beasts 545.
Advancement Resources
- Beast-feeding pills — The Fan Family possesses an earth-type formula designed to accelerate an Earth Dragon Beast’s growth 185.
- Five Elements Beast-Origin Powder — Can help spirit beasts break through to the third tier 468.
- Demon-Shedding Transformation Pill — Lin prepares premium pills for Little Qing’s fourth-tier transformation 606.
- Ancestral Blood Spirit-Summoning Pills — Stimulate dormant bloodline potential and may cause mutations; failed awakening can cause severe or fatal injuries 607.
- Flood Dragon Pearl — An origin relic refined from a dead flood dragon’s body, excluding its essence blood and core. Xiao Hei chooses it as a potentially superior bloodline-transformation path and is instructed to absorb its power slowly 607 608.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Arc | Demon-beast involvement |
|---|---|
| Desolate Ruins Market | Introduces the distinction between demon beasts and spirit beasts, bloodline grades, the essence-blood trade, and the Liu Family’s beast-related business 51 52 76. |
| Azure Rosy Clouds Temple beast tide | An unusually sudden horde overwhelms frontier bridgeheads, resource sites, and market wards. Its later territorial consolidation produces unconfirmed rumors of a directing great demon or a secret agreement with the Temple 208 209 212. |
| Savage Wastes hunts | Demon-beast hunting supplies Lin with bloodlines, cores, and materials. Coordinated hunting with Mo Zhaoli enables transformations such as Earth Control and Illusion 279 280. |
| Yan Kingdom Secret Realm | Ancient beasts, organized desert predators, and the imprisoned Truefire Flood Dragon make the realm both a hunting ground and a major danger. The dragon’s essence blood gives Lin access to Dragonkin Breath and Dragon Breath true intent 480 486 492. |
| Little Qing’s transformation | Her successful fourth-tier breakthrough gives Lin another Nascent Soul-level fighting force and publicly raises his reputation 606 607. |
| Outer Sea war | Demon Kings fight human forces and sometimes violate the pact protecting lower-ranked combatants. Lin kills Sacred Plume, while Little Qing defeats the wounded Darkscale Demon King 613 614. |
| Flood-dragon hunt and retaliation | The slain Single-Horned Flood Dragon provides a replacement body for Old Jiao. Its death triggers pursuit through bloodline-linked heavenly-secrets tracking, which Lin counters with Candle Gaze 622 623. |
