| First Appearance | Discussed in Chapter 2; Leatherback physically appears in Chapter 5 2 5 |
Power Progression
Humanity classifies Kaiju by size, strength, and toxicity. The scale initially extends from Category I to Category IV; higher categories indicate greater danger, not an individual creature's cultivation level 25.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Category IV | 3 5 25 | Virus and Leatherback launch separate attacks on Sydney and Sitka. Category IV is initially the highest category humanity has encountered. |
| Category IV mass deployment | 37 | Otachi, a second Leatherback, and Raijin emerge together in an unprecedented triple assault, escalating the threat through simultaneous deployment. |
| Category V | 42 43 48 | Poison Woman appears alongside Category IV Abomination. Category V specimens have substantially stronger bodies and deadlier toxicity than lower-category Kaiju. |
| Category VI — Super Kaiju | 48 49 | The Precursors' emergency weapon combines Kaiju through factory technology. Activated and controlled by Yochi, it is larger and stronger than the version he remembers from the original timeline. |
Biology
Cloning and Hive Mind
- Shared DNA: Kaiju recovered from different years have identical DNA, identifying them as cloned weapons rather than naturally occurring monsters 25.
- Central control: Their individual behavior varies, but they share a hive mind governed by a Precursor-created biological brain 17.
- Genetic directives: Leatherback continues its attack despite instinctively recognizing Natsuki as dangerous because its mission is embedded in its genes 8.
- Recorded experiences: The Precursors can retrieve information about what a Kaiju experienced even after its death, although access to that information is restricted by rank 17.
Toxic Blood
- Kaiju blood is blue, highly toxic, and corrosive. Acidic substances released into the air can irreversibly damage human bodies 8 25.
- Explosive attacks can disperse the blood across surrounding land. The first Kaiju's destruction leaves the area within a hundred-mile radius of San Francisco a lifeless wasteland 3.
- Raleigh advises killing Leatherback at sea, explaining that seawater can neutralize its acidity and reduce pollution 9.
- Their toxicity makes killing them safely a separate problem from defeating them; this is a major reason humanity relies on Jaegers rather than conventional weapons 3 8.
Size, Density, and Secondary Brains
- Raleigh describes Kaiju as over sixty meters tall, with some Category III specimens reaching ninety meters 2.
- Their size conceals comparatively low mass: the ninety-meter-plus example discussed weighs only 2,700 tonnes, while the fifty-two-meter Natsuki weighs 42,000 tonnes 2.
- Natsuki notices that Leatherback's footprints do not match the weight he expects from a creature over eighty meters tall 6.
- Kaiju possess secondary brains. The specimen examined by Hermann is larger than half an adult human, while the Super Kaiju has three secondary brains 29 49.
- Newton successfully Drifts with a Kaiju brain to uncover the enemy's ambush preparations, but returns injured and badly shaken 44.
Breach Compatibility
- The Breach transports objects carrying Kaiju DNA. Humanity therefore needs a Kaiju body to take a Jaeger and nuclear bomb through it 25.
- Shaolin Rogue and Eureka Striker ultimately cross using the nearly dead Abomination 46.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Destruction
- Kaiju destroy coastal settlements through their enormous bodies, powerful limbs, claws, jaws, and specialized anatomy 5 38 43.
- Leatherback breaks Sitka's unfinished Wall of Life with two punches; Raijin tears an arm from Cherno Alpha during an ambush 5 38.
- Abomination's armored hide resists Eureka Striker's attacks, requiring Natsuki's intervention to inflict decisive damage 45.
- Their durability remains far below Natsuki's full strength: even Category V specimens are cut apart by his light discs 48.
Electromagnetic Pulse
- Leatherback emits an EMP from an organ on its back, disabling nearby machinery, including Stacker's helicopter 5 6.
- A second Leatherback attempts the same attack during the naval battle, but Natsuki interrupts it 41.
- Multiple Leatherbacks disable both invading Jaegers inside the Precursor colony before Eureka Striker can complete its nuclear attack 46.
- The EMP targets technology rather than directly killing nearby people. Leatherback mistakenly treats Natsuki's giant form as another machine 5 9.
Flight and Corrosive Attacks
- Otachi can fly and attempts to attack Crimson Typhoon with corrosive acid and a bladed tail 38.
- Its mouth splits into three sections before it prepares to spit acid at the Jaeger's cockpit 38.
- The colony's army also contains winged Kaiju that swarm the disabled Jaegers in midair 46.
Fusion
- Precursor biotechnology can fuse powerful Kaiju into a larger combined weapon 49.
- The resulting Category VI Super Kaiju survives severe organ damage and Eureka Striker's nuclear explosion, but is ultimately destroyed by Natsuki's Specium Ray 49 50.
Known Kaiju
| Kaiju | Category | Distinguishing traits and documented encounters |
|---|---|---|
| Trespasser | Not specified | First invader, attacking San Francisco in 2013. Killed with a nuclear bomb; its skeleton later becomes a landmark beside a makeshift marketplace 2 40. |
| Knifehead | Category II in the 2016 Tokyo account | Kills Mako's parents and Stacker's copilot before Stacker defeats it. A later Knifehead is killed by Raleigh in Alaska; a mechanically modified version subsequently attacks Shatterdome under Lyman's remote control and falls to Gipsy Danger 28 40 42 43. |
| Virus | IV | Breaches Sydney's Wall of Life and is defeated by Eureka Striker 19 25. |
| Leatherback | IV | Gorilla-like build, six green eyes, a humped back, and an EMP organ. Natsuki kills the Sitka specimen and destroys its corpse; a second specimen dies alongside Raijin to the mechanical Ultra Slash 5 9 41. |
| Otachi | IV | Flying, acid-spitting Kaiju with a bladed tail. Natsuki destroys its skull with Shaolin Rogue's punch, then later burns its remaining body with a thermite round 38 43. |
| Raijin | IV | Ambushes Cherno Alpha and tears off an arm. Natsuki swings it by the tail and kills it alongside Leatherback with an energy-edged mechanical disc 38 41. |
| Abomination | IV | Bull-like head, gray-green armor, and two pairs of arms. Badly wounded by Shaolin Rogue and carried through the Breach as the mission's biological pass 43 45 46. |
| Poison Woman | V | Dark-green, demon-and-hammerhead-shark appearance with three spiked tails; stands over a hundred meters tall. One specimen confronts the Jaegers at sea, while a colony specimen is bisected by Natsuki's light disc 43 45 48. |
| Super Kaiju / Combined Kaiju | VI | Nearly two hundred meters tall, covered in weapon-like spikes, with two upward tusks and three secondary brains. Controlled by Yochi and destroyed by Natsuki 49 50. |
Background / History
Origin and Invasion
The Precursors claim to have targeted Earth two hundred million years earlier, when its environment was unsuitable for them. By 2025, they consider humanity's environmental changes sufficient for colonization and intend to exterminate humans along with all other terrestrial life 17.
The first recorded modern incursion occurs in 2013, when Trespasser emerges from the Pacific and devastates San Francisco. Humanity kills it with a nuclear bomb, but its toxic blood compounds the devastation. Dozens of incursions follow over the next twelve years, shrinking habitable territory and driving the development of the Jaeger Program 2 3 6.
Accelerating Attacks
By 2025, attacks have accelerated from yearly intervals to monthly intervals and then to roughly seven-day intervals. Hermann predicts that deployment will eventually become continuous, but the simultaneous Sydney and Sitka attacks already exceed his model 25.
The unexpected Sitka attack is deliberately arranged by transmigrators among the Precursors to kill Raleigh and Stacker while humanity is distracted by Sydney. Natsuki's intervention defeats Leatherback and forces the invaders to reconsider their strategy. Their subsequent offensive includes a triple Category IV assault followed by Abomination and Category V Poison Woman 7 17 37 42 43.
Battle in the Precursor Colony
Newton's Kaiju Drift reveals that the Precursors know about humanity's nuclear plan and have prepared an army on the far side of the Breach. When Shaolin Rogue and Eureka Striker enter the colony, Leatherback EMPs disable them and a Kaiju swarm closes in. Natsuki transforms and destroys successive waves with physical attacks, light discs, and the Specium Ray 44 46 47 48.
Yochi activates the Category VI Super Kaiju as a final countermeasure. After being overwhelmed, he uses Eureka Striker as a hostage, but the Hansens detonate its bomb and eject. Natsuki protects the pilots and destroys the surviving Super Kaiju; Yochi survives separately beneath the rubble 49 50.
Remains and Human Use
- Research material: Shatterdome stores Kaiju tissue and secondary brains for biological investigation 12 29.
- Breach access: Kaiju bodies provide the DNA needed for human machines to cross the passage 25 46.
- Settlement landmarks: After flesh is removed and blood toxins neutralized, abandoned skeletons become gathering places for displaced people 40.
- Trespasser's remains: Its San Francisco skeleton stands near a marketplace despite lingering nuclear radiation. Zachary Lyman conceals a facility beneath the area 40.
